IChat connection dropped intermittently

Hi all,
Every now and then my iChat connection is suddenly dropped—it just disconnects me and reconnects me without any error message or other indication of what's wrong. The strange thing is, while I see myself as being offline for only a handful of seconds, the person I'm chatting with typically informs me that I'd been offline for five or ten minutes. Thus, I can't be sure if I'm really still online during a lull in the conversation; sometimes I'll send myself a message and get no reply, so I log off and back on and it works again.
I've tried using Adium to see if this is just an iChat problem. Whereas the connection usually gets dropped on a fairly regular basis with iChat (every half hour or so), I maintained a constant connection for 4.5 hours recently with Adium, but earlier today Adium dropped me after about 20 minutes.
I've already configured these programs and my wireless router to connect using port 443. I'm using a DI-624 wireless router and a Motorola cable modem provided by Charter. I've been using all the same hardware for much longer than I've been experiencing this problem, though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Alan,
Does the D-Link DL-624 for UPnP active ?
This device has suspect UPnP and should not use it.

  • IChat Connection Made - Intermittent Audio Static

    Hello,
With Ralph Jone's help, finally got my iChat working properly. I had a couple of successful chats with Ralph, but when I try to have a chat with my Aunt in France, we can connect, see and hear and then all of a sudden, the audio turns into horrific static. This will continue for a few moments, but then clear up, then occur again. Very annoying.
I have a G4 Quicksilver running 10.4.10 (hoping for a new computer and Leopard). I have a Linksys router and access port combo. I have Comcast Highspeed. I have no idea what type of connection my aunt has. She is in France. She is on a PC with the latest version of AIM and running XP, I believe. I have double checked that my Quicktime prefs, sound prefs, microphone prefs are all correct. The webcam is a Labtec Webcam Pro using iChatUSBCam and Macam. I just installed Powerboost as well. When I do the appleu tests, they are all fine, but I will test again and let them run longer to see if trouble reoccurs.
My aunt is almost 80 and not terribly computer literate, so a simple solution would be helpful!!
    Thanks
    Jennifer

    Hi,
    Several things.
Which version of AIM is she using ?
Also can one of you try a head set ?
If you do and the static continues that it may be that you Aunt needs to turn her speakers away from the Mic and possibly turn them down.
If hearing is a problem for her getting a head set maybe the way to go.
In System Preferences > Sound > Input tab is the volume of your outgoing audio (despite it being labelled as the System Input level)
dropping that just slightly may help.
If she turns out to have AIM 5.9 we may be able to get her to adjust the Video quality which will have an impact on the Audio as well.

  • Network connectivity drops intermittently

I've got some really weird behavior with my home file server that started early yesterday. It first presented itself with irssi being super slow (occasionally not responded) and I kept getting server disconnects. I poked around journalctl and found this:

Which looks a little strange but didn't explain the irssi behavior. On a whim I turned up the front fan on the server as I had seen a couple alerts about the disk temp hitting 40C, within a few minutes munin spewed a bunch of alerts, primarily OK alerts around disk latency which is a little strange. That said, I keep getting alerts about eth0 errors being unknown/a high number.
This morning I looked at munin and there are huge gaps in the charts, 1-2 hours which is really strange. Looking in the munin logs I see errors about connecting to the tcp port. Anyone know what's going on? I've got munin configured to use CGI for the graph generation.
While I was typing this I lost network connectivity to the server (ssh/http) for 5-10 minutes, after I got back in I saw the systemd messages above. Scrolling through my buffer I see the following error appeared regularly yesterday:

Comcast technician said my Technicolor brand modem I rent from them is the problem. He said that most VPN problems show up due to that brand is not configured correctly for that application.  He did suggest that any other brand they offer seems to work ok.  Mine is a technicolor wih voice modem too.   I have to go to my local Comcast office and see what model modems they have available at the time since they cannot be disturbed by a local phone call.     I dont know if I may trade in my brand new Technicolor for another failing modem or just suffer the ever-failing connection.  The connection does always reconnect by slows my work sometimes creating too many distractions that lead to not remeining focused on the task at hand........especially when a client needs have to wait until reconnection.     I plan to call the Technicolor manufacturer first  to see if they have a fix first.  Cannot assume anyone at Comcast has done the research.

  • Any definite answers to intermittent connection drops?

I've been having this problem off and on for several months- I've read lots of posts here with a wide range of different fix suggestions. Any help from somebody whose successfully troubleshot this?
My Gear: Broadband Cable Modem -to- Airport Extreme (802.11n) via ethernet.
Airport -to- iMac, a Windows laptop, and iPhone via WiFi.
My problem: All 3 clients have the same issue: The connection drops every 8 seconds. I'm connected to my network, all bars black- then I get dumped, "looking for networks" for a second or two, then it re-connects. This happens every 8 seconds like clockwork. Internet connection, e-mail, iDisk- everything affected.
    What I know:
    1. It is not the modem. Connected directly to the modem with ethernet, everything is fine.
    2. Restarting airport does not help.
    3. I don't think it's interference. The very first time I connected my Wi-Fi, I had this problem. I moved a cordless phone to the other side of the room, and the problem went away...for a few weeks. Then it came back. I did all the usual stuff, restarts, etc. nothing helped for a few days. Then suddenly the problem spontaneously went away. Been okay for about a month or so- now it's back with a vengeance.
    I haven't changed service providers...BUT:
When I recently re- setup the airport while ethernet connected, Airport Utility told me that the modem did not have a valid IP address. I haven't changed anything. Modem is still the same.
How do I change the IP address? Can I do this manually? Would this cause signal drops every 8 seconds?
Judging by the posts on here- this seems to be a common problem. However, I haven't seen any common solutions. Help

    3. I don't think it's interference"
I do. Every eight seconds" provides a strong hint that you are dealing with something like an RF radar sweep, or a nearby wireless security system that sends out a scanning signal about every eight seconds. A guy in the neighborhood with a ham radio that is misbehaving is a possibility as well.
I can't tell you how to actually locate the source of interference, but even if that were possible, whether it could be eliminated is another question.
I just spent a few days trying to help a friend who moved into a new apartment complex where it seems like everyone there is affected by intermittent drops on their wireless networks. When I got up on the roof, I noticed that the complex just happens to be located on a higher elevation area directly between two visible microwave transmission towers. That could also be a possibility in your case.

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent connection drops on Apple LAN (TimeCapsule   AirPorts)

Hi all, I have built out a wireless network for an office space. The network consists of a TimeCapsule acting as a router w/ dhcp and 3 Apple AirPorts acting as access points to the TC. I have gotten reports from users that there has been random connection drops (symptom: wireless internet stops working breaking AirPlay, etc.). Is there a way to review router logs to see what happened? Are there any proactive tools I can install to monitor connection drops?
I have Logmein Central and can make one of the computers a Logmein Pro client but the alerting on that is very weak, looking for something more. Please help!

  • Internet Connection Drop Outs when remote administ...

I did not want to trouble anyone here if I thought it unnecessary but now I feel that I do need some assistance so this warrants opening a new thread.
BT Infinity Option 2 customer with BT HH 4 and its separate modem - not hacked so cannot read any useful information or login to see what is going on and both BT and the manufacturer long ago removed the open source code of the modem.
I am quite confident now that these disconnections happen when a remote server/attacker attempts to gain access to my network. These can be from China, Iran and other places too. Sometimes Ministry of Defence? I don't know why I get these connection attempts and most of the time I see BT HH 4 does block these so why I get disconnected I have no idea?
I made a post in an old thread before opening this thread and said it was due to firmware upgrade but I misread the date! It was not updated since the 8th of May I think. These disconnections have been happening only this past 4-7 days with the most 4 days with intensity greater than the 3 before. I am not 100% certain it is caused by the remote administration that is blocked.
What happens when this takes place is the BT servers are then unreachable sometimes and I cannot regain a connection for up to 3 hours at a time, usually it is 5-10 mins max though. Without looking at my event log, any ideas?
I want to get different gear now and never wanted to use BT equipment anyway because I want greater control and options to configure. I would like to go with DD-WRT or OpenWRT Router with Integrated VDSL v2 modem. Anyone here that may suggest one that supports either of these open firmwares? Not so much the concern to prevent any security holes or backdoors but just as much if not more for versatility and configuration and just having control over my network. being able to do upgrades when I want and not when my ISP decides needs doing. And before you say BT do not have backdoors then why would they admit they can remote login to devices and storage contents with their pwerline adapters even. I remember reading a news article quoting BT as admiting this. Anyway, that is not my main concern here, as much as privacy and security is not a crime it is rather rare online. First I need to get to the root cause of this.
BT HH 4 is not reporting any DDOS attacks and even if it were I would not expect to experience any disconnection. I used to get tons of floods from DDOS attacks years ago when using Netgear routers and never exeprienced any downtime, but that was with another ISP. I don't detect any malware or anything like that and rarely download anything on this machine, I know web browsing can infect a system but I don't think that is it.
I want to go back to how I used to do things. Any help with this is appreciated. I will need to get my router login details because I was never given those when I singed up with BT Infinity Option 2. I don't even know what my BT email is but do believe there is a way to recover that under my account. **In the past we have had intermittent connection drops and loss of sync but this is not the same right now.
    Edit:
** Just to clarify that was before we upgraded to BT Infinity Opt 2. This is the first time any probs with this service since upgrade and that must be about 6 months or more now.

When running BT HH diagnostic it printed out that the username for login had changed and needed resetting or for me to enter my own in that I was NOT given! Anyway, when going to select manual reset it had not changed from default at all so I think this is just some default BT diagnostic that is false. I realise that other BT customers are affected by this with the BT HH5 but mine is HH4...my posting probably isn't as clear right now as I have not slept as much past few nights trying to figure this out. This is happening at different times of the day but more often during early hours.
So I am getting these WGET TLS error(s)
How do I enter in log excerpt from BT HH? Forums says my post exceeds 20K chars...

  • My internet connection drops

    hello there!
ive been having this problem for a little over 3 weeks now. i have an ethernet dsl type internet connection with a cable and not wifi. ive NEVER had this problem with my ibook on this same internet cable but ive had my imac intel core2duo for about 3 months now and 3 weeks ago the internet connection would drop every now and again, like 5times a week and i noticed the only way to get the connection up again is to restart the compter. once i do that, the internet is back! so weird! however, the connect just dropped twice in the last 40 mins and ive restarted my computer twice to get connection back. why is this and how can i fix this problem?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

users that have internet connection drops, slow speeds and intermittent connections while wireless, then your problem might be slightly different then other users in this thread.
for Wireless intermittent and slow, you should try changing the wireless signal.  you can do that in the router.   open a browser, and go to http://192.168.1.1,  user name is admin.  and the password is most likely the serial number found on the service tag of your VZ router unless you changed it.
Once you login succesfully, go to the top and hit wireless, then on the left basic security.   then go to option 3 which is channel
1, 6 and 11 and are the only channels you should try.
So it will likely be set to auto, change it to 11 and put the check for keep settings even after reboot (Directly under the channel) and then hit apply.,
after you hit apply,  test your connection out, if you notice a difference, leave it like that until the problem happens again, and if it happens again, go back into the router, and try channel 6,     test it out.  and then finally 1 if the first two don't work.
Also take a look at page 2 of Actiontec's Wireless PDF File.  It gives you some idea's with regards to position and orientation of where the router sits and how it can best be positioned for maximum coverage.

  • Connection drops dead during session (OS 10.5.6 problem?)

I am chatting without trouble for quite a long time now, till now. During sessions the connection drops dead after a minute or 3. Buddy freezes in the chatwindow and his/her little cam in the chatlist gets gray. Problem repeats itself with several buddy's. Typing a message to the buddy results in an AOL server time-out message. Restarting I-Chat brings the buddy to life again, connection is made swiftly and after a miute or 2-3 the line drops dead again. The only thing recently changed on my system is the software update to 10.5.6. Could it be a bug in this update? Any other experiences regarding 10.5.6 and I-Chat?
    Kind regards, Julius

Only if you have Perian (1.1.3)
    Downdgrading Perian only fixes Perian.
Defcom says Use Quicktime at 1.5Mbps. I would concur.
He also says try the port at 443. (I would go as far as saying try it with and Without th SSL Login as well
I would also consider deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restarting iChat.
I would also consider Rebooting the Modem to clear any odd ports being held onto.

  • Wifi gets dropped intermittently when Mac logs on to WLAN

    Hi everyone,
Our home network is PC-based, with a Win XP PC physically connected with an Ethernet cable to a Philips modem/router and a PC and Mac laptop using wireless connections.
When only the two PCs are on, the connection is spotless, but as soon as I turn on the Mac, the connection begins dropping intermittently, even if Airport shows all four bars. Even the desktop connection becomes spotty despite the physical connection. It only happens when the Mac's on and (trying to) connect to the wlan. When a second PC laptop logs onto the network, no problems either.
When the connection works, it works very well - then nothing for a few seconds to a few minutes - I keep hitting refresh and the connection just starts working again.
I've tried changing the wifi channel, turning off IPv6, MAC filtering, turning the router on and off, entering DHCP manually... nothing seems to work.
It doesn't seem to be related to the general Leopard WiFi problem reported by a lot of other users because the connection on my MacBook is fine when I use it elsewhere or connect to the Internet via Bluetooth with my mobile phone. This only happens at home so I figure it HAS to be a configuration problem somewhere!
I also have the same connection problem when I physically connect the Mac to the router - full signal, but no working connection!
What am I doing wrong? Is there some setting on the Mac or the modem/router that isn't set up right (I'm guessing there is.) I'm a new Mac user and it's a bit frustrating to have this problem (and that's putting it lightly!)
    Thanks for any help!

Guess this doesn't inspire anyone. No ideas? Or leads?
I'm pretty good at following instructions, but I don't have any formal IT knowledge so I really must be doing something wrong and it's very frustrating.
Somehow the Mac seems to be disrupting bandwidth because all machines are affected! But I just can't figure out why or how to fix it.

Just got a MacBook, when connecting to iChat using AIM account for video conferences after few seconds, the video freezes and I get an Connection Error message. Thanks

    Hi Fredericlang,
In that case the Failed Video Chat window would have read "Data not received for 10 secs"
The ports listed here are correct.
That leaves whether your computer is at 192.168.1.101 ?
You can see this is System Preferences > Network > (Connection method in second drop down) > TCP/IP tab
The IP looks like one issued from a Linksys Device.
Did you use Port Forwarding to open the ports ?
Is that pointing to 192.168.1.101 ?

I've changed my preferences on iChat to have no bandwith limit and I went through system preferences to change the streaming on Quicktime to 1.5. I even had the person I was trying to connect with do the same thing.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi CodLBi,
The Quicktime Streaming drop down has various speeds.
Most of these get converted into the numbers indicated.
    56k for dial-up is obviously 56
384k for cable or DSL is 384 and so on with
    1.5Mbps being 1500
Automatic and LAN/Intranet are not numbers directly so return odd figures.
Automatic is known to be a 0 (zero)
It is not so match is not there but that it is a number iChat can not use.
iChat needs the number to be at least 100 (k) to be able to Video chat 1-1
If you quit iChat and then run this line in Terminal
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
You can see the figure ichat Sees.
    QUit iChat
    Quit Termninal

  • IChat Connection Alert - Internet Works Fine!

I've searched high and low for a solution to this problem!
    I'm running Mac OS X v. 10.4.8.
Anyways, my problem is that each time I try to logon to iChat it drops the connection after about 15 seconds of 'Connecting...' and gives me this message:
"The connection could not be completed, because it timed out."
My internet works perfectly fine! Absolutely no problems whatsoever.
I changed my port number to 443, and still no luck.
Please help! Any advice will be much appreciated!
I've made an appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow, but I really would prefer to cancel it if at all possible.
    Thanks!

SO the questions are the same as you have not told us anything
    Hi,
Are you also connected by Ethernet ?
If Leopard turn Off Internet Sharing.
If Leopard or Tiger and you have Parallels then make sure it gets it's own IP

  • IChat Server dropping virtual domain.

    Hello everyone,
I have a fresh 10.6.2 server install with newly configured OD and DNS.
The server hostname is server.mydomain.com and has a verified ptr record.
    I also have a CNAME of ichat.mydomain.com to server.mydomain.com
In iChat server I have added the ichat.mydomain.com to the list and it all works for a while but then after a reboot it removes itself and users can not longer connect. If I add it back again it will run as if it never was removed.
    Anyone?
    Many thanks,
    David Lee

I wanted to post an update here with my findings so far. Over the last 24 hours my iChat virtual host domains haven't been deleted and it may be related to the following.
Like many others, I had been getting the dreaded AppleYukon2 chip reset "bug" (AppleYukon2: 00000001,00000000 sk98nif - deadmanCheck - nothing received, resetting chip) showing up in my kernel.log. It appears this AppleYukon2 issue is related to network inactivity, albeit triggered by only a couple minutes of inactivity.
As a test to eliminate network inactivity, and therefore the AppleYukon2 chip resetting issue, I started pinging the router on my network every minute. I did this with "ping -i 60 router_name" from Terminal. This has been successful in stopping the AppleYukon2 chip reset.
You can read more about the AppleYukon2 issue here and here.
Now on to its relation to the iChat dropping virtual hosts from the list. I noticed many times when the AppleYukon2 issue was popping up, that in my system.log I would see jabberd detecting a network change and reloading its configuration files.
    Apr 2 08:56:31 srv1 configd[31]: network configuration changed.

It seems during these times, but not always, iChat would drop the virtual domains from the list. Also (and I'm going from memory here) it seems that it dropped domains while I was in the middle of using the server and network. But I can't be positive on that.
My server hasn't removed the domains since sometime yesterday before I started pinging my router, whereas before it would remove things multiple times per day. Hopefully this (lame) workaround will turn out to be a temp fix.
Can anyone else test this to see if it helps their situation?

  • RE1000 Connection dropped and SSID visible

Hi to all, I've two big problem with the extender in object, the first one is the wifi connection dropped, tested with 2 mac and 2 iphone, this is very boring because every 2-3 the devices are offline. The second problem is that I can't hide the SSID while with my router I can. What should I do?
    Some specs.
    Router: Linksys/Cisco X2000
    wifi: mode = mixed
    channel amp = Auto (20 o 40 MHz)
    channel = standard
    SSID tranmission = hide
    protection mode = WPA2 Personal
    firmware v = 2.0.01
    Extender: RE1000
    Automatic configuration DHCP
    Wifi = manual
    firmware v = 1.0.02

To resolve intermittent wireless connection, you need to perform the following:
    i. Reducing Wireless Interference
ii. Customizing Wireless Settings of the ADSL Gateway
iii. Checking the Placement of the ADSL gateway
Here is the link for solving the problem if the connection is dropping: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=95fb621ead264dda8c438f655f710630_4261.xml&pid=80&r...
Second, there is no such feature in RE1000 which can disable the broadcast of the SSID.

  • BT Wi-Fi connection drops and cannot be closed

I use BT Wi-Fi on a monthly subscription - 500 minutes for £6 a month, plus 12p a minute for any extra minutes.
Occasionally my connection drops, and I have to reconnect and login again, which I can do OK.
But when I check later how many minutes I used, via my online subscription info, it's clear that I end up with two connections running in parallel. The connection which dropped carries on as active in the background somewhere until it is eventually auto-disconnected (after 15 or 20 minutes ?) due to inactivity. So I lose those minutes each time this happens.
There is no way to close the dropped connection. Even if I log out of my new 2nd connection, it only closes that one, not the dropped one which I can't access.
Today this happened when I was at the end of my monthly allowance, so because I couldn't close the connection I've now gone around 30 minutes over my allowance, which will cost me £3.60.
Please can we have a way of closing all connections on a BT Wi-Fi account, to deal with this issue.
And a refund would be good, as I had no way of preventing my account going into the 12p a minute rate.
