IChat continually logs me in and out when I try to open it

When I try to open iChat, the application continually logs me in and out in rapid succession and then an error message appears saying that I have tried to log in too many times in a short period of time and cannot log on. Why can I not open my iChat and how do I fix this problem?
My friends have told me that AOL instant messenger shows that I am logged on but I cannot even open my iChat. It even says I am logged on when my computer is turned off. I am totally confused and don't understand why this is happening. Please help!
Thanks.
