IChat Crashing after Upgrad to Tiger from Panther

I have recently upgraded from Panther to Tiger (10.4.4) Now when I iChat with friends, either my iChat or theirs will die. I have read some of the other posts regarding the iChat crashes and have run the iChat -7 logging command. Here is the terminal output from the crash. I would love to get any feedback on what the causes could be. I see a segmentation fault at the end, but I assume the problem occurs prior to that.
Thanks!

  • Upgrade to Tiger from panther

Can anyone help me? We have upgraded our software from Panther to Tiger and now can not log into the main account, therefore can not access any applications or email. The machine has two partitions if that has anything to do with it.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello boing:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Partitioning an internal HD on a Mac is, IMHO, both a waste of time and potential trouble. Answer, yes it could be related. However, you did not say how you upgraded or what you used to upgrade (full retail version).
I assume you do not have a bootable backup of your previous system ( avery good procedure before any updates).
If you can provide more details, someone here may be able to help.
    Barry

  • Upgrade to Tiger from Panther questions

I checked some of the old (2007) questions that are similar to mine, but they don't exactly address my questions, because of the upgrade separation of the systems in question. So I'm entering a new question that might hopefully save me some trouble.
I haven't been using my Powerbook G4 very much, lately, but I do use it occasionally for light video editing and more especially for slideshows. I like making slideshows on iMovie beter than other application I have on my other computers.
I keep reading the upgrade methodology... supposedly using the Snowleopard boxed set. The hype makes it sound as if it's capable of upgrading an Inel or PPC equipped Mac. That just sounds too good to be true, so here I am to ask for some experience based advice to make this potential change a little easier. Which disks should I purchase to make this upgrade as easy as possible?
Should I upgrade my RAM? Would an upgrade to more than the existing 512 meg be advised, or is it pretty mandatory? I am always fighting byte-bulge, as it is, so would an upgrade to a HDD larger than the existing 80 gigs be worth the extra money? Any particular size/brand to consider more than others?
My present complaint is an inability to do anything at all with the iTunes store, as most of you probably know. This wasn't so bad prior to adding Win7 machines to my network... but they seem to have completely shut out the Mac... and a Win XP machine, to boot. It's just a hassle to swap fairly large files with thumb drives.
Any upgrade advice and methods for upgrading from Panther to Tiger would be much appreciated.

Sorry, no G4 or any PPC Mac is going to be able to use Snow Leopard/10.6.x
10.5.8 is the most your G4 can use, & yes, max out the RAM.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/leopardassist/
BTW, 10.3.x is Panther, 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard & not PPC compatible.

  • IPhoto problem after upgrading to Leopard from Panther

I successfully (more or less) upgraded my 867 MHz G4 to Leopard from Panther earlier in the week. Now I find that every time I try to open iPhoto I get the message 'The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly.'
I have repaired permissions, restarted the computer and run Software Update- all to no avail. Any suggestions from anyone?
    Anne

Well thanks TD for your instant and helpful reply - looks as if I can't do anything except spend some more money for iLife as my iPhoto is version 2.0.1!!

  • Upgrading to tiger from panther

I have 2 G4 ppc one has tiger installed with the origianl disk includes Xcode version10.4,6 2Z691-5811-A I installed the disk int the Panther system and the disk just kept ejecting. since then i have learned you can't do it that way. How can you remove the panther program to upgrade to tiger???? inlayman terms.
    thanks jackjumper

    Welcome To  Discussions jackjumper!
If the Mac G4 meets the Tiger System Requirements, as Roger Wilmut1 posted, you must purchase a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD.
The discs must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
There is also a version available on CDs, at FastMac, for $179.99.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Upgrading to tiger from panther--please help me out!!!

I have a 17" imac, running on Mac OS X 10.3.9. I bought the new ipod nano, which needs Tiger at least. I went to the Apple Store, and they told me to buy Tiger online, since the Apple store doesn't carry it anymore.
So I searched ebay and Amazon and was dismayed that it was still so expensive. The Apple store customer service guy told me it would be cheap. Well, I kept my eyes peeled for a while, and finally found it available from allmac.com through Amazon for $75. It listed the system requirements, which I met.
I got it in the mail yesterday, and was shocked to see "CPU Drop in DVD" and "not to be sold separately" on the DVD. I put it in the disc drive, and it immediately was spit out. This happened repeatedly. I checked on discussion boards about this problem and found that perhaps my superdrive needed to be updated. I tried this, and it didn't need it after all.
So, today I tried inserting the disc again. Magically my computer recognized the disc. Then I opened the disc from Finder and clicked the "install" icon. A screen popped up telling me to restart my computer, which I did. The restart took a lot longer than normal, and I noticed that there was a completely gray screen that lingered for around a minute or two. Then the "finder" icon popped up in the middle of the screen, and it continued to restart as normal. No installation procedure ever appeared.
Then I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong, so I went to my Apple Store and talked to one of their technical support guys, and he told me that the DVD I bought should not have been sold, but it should still upgrade my computer just fine.
Well, I went home, tried it countless more times, all with the same result.
I'm getting really frustrated. I don't want to be out $75, and I'd really like to start using my iPod. I run long distances, and it's the only thing that keeps me going sometimes. My old iPod no longer holds charge for more than 20 minutes (even with a 10 hr battery expansion pack I purchased), which is what got me into this mess to begin with.
IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME IN ANY WAY, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!!

    Awoz,
Not sure what kind of iPod you have, but what about trying to fix the battery instead of going through all this? Some third-party services are able to put in a fresh battery for probably less than the $75 you paid for Tiger.
You could return the Nano if you're still in the return period, or sell it on eBay, or keep it just in case. Amazon will probably let you return the DVD once you explain they weren't allowed to sell it. I've returned CD and DVD disks before, so it is possible.
Tiger is great, but you don't know what other problems you may run into once you have it installed. May be easier in the long run to fix your old iPod and keep what you have, since it appears you're happy with it and it does what you need.
    Just a thought. Good luck...

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

  • Installing Office 2004 after upgrade to Tiger

I am upgrading to Tiger from Panther and do not want to lose Office for Mac. I have the 2004 version which I have upgraded in Panther up to 11.3.8. I will have to install the standard Office 2004 for Mac from the CD. Can Tiger accept this early version so that I can upgrade by downloading improved versions?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Just be sure to Repair Permissions before & after any upgrade/install/updates.
The usual reason why updates/installs/upgrades fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.

5 crashes after upgrade to ios my address book immediately and I can not access emails, because the password is wrong and when I go to mail settings crashes the application immediately from

Same issue also. Occurring both on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 after upgrading to ios 5
By the way, Mattban and Sancasslano, are either of you also experiencing any of the following issues:
    * Problems with Contacts either crashing or listing no names
    * Problems with turning iCloud on or off for application under Settings->iCloud... On both mine I just get a pop up saying that iCloud is being turned off but Contacts then just locks up.
    * General problems when trying to synch applications on the iPad or iPhone over iCloud?
I am wondering if all these issues are in someway related to and whether it is worth trying to turn off iCloud somehow, though I cannot work out how this can be done once set up.

  • Lost messages after upgrade to Tiger

After upgrading to Tiger I seem to have lost the messages in my main Inbox that were sent to my main email address. All the other mailboxes where I filtered mail to seem intact.
I backed up data to a separate firewire drive before I installed the new OS, including the Mail folder in Library... I can see the other mailboxes, but have not been able to locate the main Inbox or find and import the mail that is missing. Did Panther store it somewhere else??
I've looked at your support topics, but I'm still baffled.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problems:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account’s Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you’re not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Curve crashes after upgrade to OS 4.5.0.81

Curve crashes after upgrade to OS 4.5.0.81
Ever since I upgraded to the T-Mobile handheld OS 4.5.0.81, my Curve crashes several times a day down to a black screen. I can't power back up on battery -- I have to plug in to an AC source, then power back up.
Hourglass remains on for quite some time to boot up, then I get a message about verifying security settings.
Curve usually crashes when I'm on a call, although now it seems to be happening when I'm using any of the phone setting menus.
I've already tried 1) freeing up memory on the SIM card by deleting pictures 2) doing a clean install of the handheld software using Desktop Manager.
It's still crashing. My BlackBerry is two months out of warranty (of course!). T-Mobile says I have to buy a new phone. I think it's a software issue (I've used the phone with no problems between 3/1/2008 and 4/4/2009).
    Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Below there is an excerpt from page to link I provided above:
What If I Want To Downgrade?
Forum member 'bfrye' made a good guide: Here is a quick install guide to your blackberry. This should easily cover reinstallation of OS and reverting back to previous OS version as well.
    1. Download the version of OS you want to install from your carrier's website.
    2. Extract or install the files from the previous step. They will automatically install into the correct location. This location will be C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files. Under this directory you will see directories with the model number of your device (if you installed the correct files) followed by a version number. Under these directories will be a host of .alx and .cod files. Do not modify or delete these files. They are needed to install the new OS.
    3. Assume the BlackBerry Handheld Manager is installed, when you plug your device in, a popup will appear and ask if you want to upgrade your device. Choose upgrade and follow the steps given by the Application Loader. If you have any 3rd party applications you would like to keep, locate and select them at this time to avoid having to reload them after the new OS is installed.
    4. This will also be the time the apploader will ask if you want to erase all data and reload or backup and restore the data on your device. Choose your preference and continue.
    5. Typically a complete OS reload with backup and restore can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on the amount of data on your device to restore.
    6. The apploader will inform you when the process is complete. After this, the device will automatically reset itself (sometime this will take longer than a normal reboot) and once completed and on, your device will be upgraded and ready to go.
Now if you wish to downgrade your device to a previous version, many of the above steps will apply.
First, you will have to remove the newer OS from your PC. Do this by going to add/remove programs in the control panel and removing the software for the new BB OS. Make sure desktop manager is not running when you do this. After complete, restart the Desktop Manager.
When you plug in your device, if everything went well, the Desktop Manager should tell you that your PC has an older version of desktop tools than is installed on the device. It will give you an option to keep the version on your BlackBerry or downgrade to the version on your PC. You will want to select downgrade and let apploader do the work.
Should this method fail, you will have to download the file javaloader.exe from the internet. Place it in a common directory (I usually put mine in the Loader Files directory for easy access. From the directory you have javaloader.exe installed in type "javaloader -usb wipe". This will completely erase all data and applications from your devie. Now navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader and delete the file vendor.xml. Now plug in your device and install the new OS from scratch. Open apploader and select the USB port as your connection. It will then bring to you to the main apploader screen and all the OS packages will be listed with status as Install.
If you have question beyond the scope of this document please feel free to post them. However I suggest reading and rereading these steps to ensure you have tried the most basic and tried steps to load or reload your OS. Have fun and enjoy!
Have you done all steps described ?

    Hi Payal,
Did this happen while running the UCCX backup?
    If yes, I see a defect CSCtn93085-
    Symptom:
During a backup of UCCX, the LDAP Monitor Service is temporarily stopped.  This is normal behavior,
but a severity 2 alarm is being generated in the SysLog.  The alarm makes it appear that the service
    stopped unexpectedly or crashed.
    Workaround:
Ignore alarms regarding the LDAP Monitor Service that appear during the timeframe of a UCCX backup.
    Thanks,
    Anand

I went to the Adobe website and had them check to see if it was working and it shows I have FlashPlayer 10.3.181.36. The page that shows  which version of flash player goes with Windows XP states that I should have 10.3.181.34 (This is what I thought I had before I updated, I was having the same problems). When I went into my computer to see what version I have, it shows 11.5.9.620 Activex and both Flash Player and Flash Player Object is listed as 10.3.181.34. My firewall for Windows is set to medium. I also am running Norton Internet Security. It takes anywhere from 3-6minutes for some of my games to load, and I have to refresh at least 3-4 times in order to play. When I do start to play it freezes frequently and I use escape to free it up. This has been going on for a month. I have no idea what to do. • Upgrade to Tiger from 10.3.8

Hi, I tried to upgrade to Tiger from 10.3.8 and after it showed everything was ok a message came up and said errors occured try again. Do I need to be at 10.3.9 to upgrade to Tiger or doesanyone have a suggestion. I don't want to go to 10.3.9 because I'm runnig PT 6.9 and it's not compatable with 10.3.9. I dont want to do a clean install only an upgrade. Thanks

I hope you understand that if PT does not work with 10.3.9, it will not work with Tiger.
Often when you get the message that errors have occured, it's because you need to repair your hard drive and permissions before trying to upgrade. Try the following:
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now try the upgrade to Tiger.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • AW crashes after upgrade to OSX

AW crashes after upgrading to OS10.4.4.
I have never, in many years, had it fail to open prior to this.
I don't know if this is a coincident or not, but it will not open at all.
It begins the process then stops and gives this message:
.... The application Appleworks quit unexpectedly.
I restarted the system a couple of times but that did not help.
I believe it fails during font installation.
Maybe a font is incompatible with the new OS. ...but which one??
    Harold

After updating AppleWorks 6 or OS X, it is necessary to delete the AppleWorks preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more information.
Even though it does appear that you may have a corrupt font, do the preference thing first. It is likely that the font was added with the system upgrade or you have a duplicate font. First, look for a font named Bauhaus 93. This font is installed by versions of Microsoft Office before Office 2004. The Bauhaus 93 with Office 2004 is not corrupt. If you don't find Bauhaus 93, before going through the trial & error of locating a corrupt font, use FontBook to check for duplicate fonts.
The trial & error method of corrupt font isolation involves moving all of the fonts from the various font folders to another folder (the Desktop is a good place) & then moving a few back at a time & trying to launch AppleWorks. When it crashes you will know the culprit is in the last bunch.
