IChat defaults to audio

I'm using iSight with OS 10.4.3 on a G5 iMac and iChat. Every other day or so I find that my buddy list shows for me only the audio symbol, not the video camera. The solution is to unplug the iSight and plug it back in -- then it works fine for a day or two, but eventually reverts again to audio. Does anyone have a longer term solution to this?

... I have too many FireWire peripherals to plug them all into the 2 ports on the iMac ...Based on that info, you should consider Possible hardware or software conflicts. iSight can be picky about how and with what it shares your Mac's Firewire connections.

  • IChat video an audio buttons greyed out & contact list busted.

    Hi folks...
I hope someone can help me. I just tried using my IChat again today and noticed that I can not make video or audio calls at all. Both buttons are completely
greyed out and disabled. Then again they sometimes reactivate and suddenly start working... why the sporadic randomness? Simple text chat is fine but video and audio buttons are dead.
Also I have non active and UNAUTHORISED contacts on my list that I just can not get rid of no matter what. I select the names.. go to EDIT/DELETE, they are removed only to re-appear a few seconds later in my list.
I noticed too that I do not have a com.apple.ichat.plist on my machine at all.. is this normal?
    Thank you for your time..
    Chris

    Hi,
The first thing that strikes me is that this is a Jabber account.
You cannot Video to Non iChat sources.
That means not to GoogleTalk Buddies that are logged in via a web Browser or PC users logged in with the App called GoogleTalk or any other Jabber app on Mac or PC.
iChat Video with Jabber IDs is iChat to iChat only.
Also check the View Menu > Show Statuses
You can turn Off Show Video Status and your own Video icon will show but all your Buddies will display Audio Only icons
Turn that off as well and you get a Buddy List like yours  (no green icons for Buddies).
This will effect AIM and Jabber Buddy Lists alike as well as the Bonjour one if you have it active.
    Deleting Buddies
It should be a question of Highlighting them and using the backspace key and confirming the delete message that pops up.
Or using the Remove option in the Video menu.
However there are a couple of quirks that have to be looked into.
    1) Any log in to the same Buddy list either on the same computer is a different App or on a different computer.
    2) Any web Login that may be active.
2a) Active might be a site that has a delayed "Keep Me Logged in" option if you don't specifically Log out.
Both Google and AIM have default periods of two weeks which is then kept "alive" if you keep logging in a web browser or using an App on a phone.
As there is constant communication between the app and the servers the Buddy list is constantly and instantly updated as buddies come on Line or change Status or go Off line.
Another Login will keep telling the server that "this is my Buddy List" and replace names you are trying to remove.
Make sure you are logged out of any other login, iPhone app, Web Browser on phone or Mac or another computer.

  • IChat will not audio/video connect after first attempt

Hi all, this is my first time at posting on any discussion site so please excuses my ignorance, and thank you in advance for any help you see fit to give me.
I have had a good look through all the posts here and a good search through the web to find help as well as a 3 hour call to Apple! Still no luck yet, please help!! I come across similar problems but this seem to be a bit different?
I am trying to connect to my family using iChat 4.0. The set up at my end is the same as my family. We both purchased at the same time in December new 24"iMac's 2.8GHz running Leopard 10.5.1. The imacs are connected via ethernet cable to new Apple Airport extremes, the new style ones. in turn the extremes are connected to new M3 X-modems then to our broadband internet connection wall sockets. We both use Zen internet as our ISP. We both have .mac full accounts
We have both used ichat before on our old iMacs/router set up using 10.4 and ichat 3 without any problems, that was via the same ISP and at the same locations.
We have connected to each other using Text without problems and have connected via video chat the first time we used the new set up and also some of the times when we make changes to some settings some where within the ichat or prefs settings, but only the once then it stops working. But it stops there. Most of the time we cannot connect at all apart from text. We have tried many things at both ends on the connection using all the leads I have found in these posts as well as the things Apple told me to do, but no luck.
So far I have tried it with the Leopard firewall off (allowing all incoming connections) and also on with iChat listed as one of the apps. (this was done after the update to 10.5.1 as this update was out before we purchased the macs so it was install from day one once we started up) I have turn off the .mac encryption at both ends and on. I have set the Quicktime stream speed to the '1.5Mbps T1/ Setting' and also set the iChat Bandwidth limit to 1Mbps as well as none and other speeds. Plus other changes on the Airport extreme as instructed by Apple all of which failed and I ended up back with the original setting (after losing all internet access at one point!).
When we try and connect via anything other than text, it starts off by trying to connect then after about 15 secs or so we both get a message at each end of the connection saying.......
+There was a communication error during your iChat.+

I may have left out some vital information, and if so sorry but just ask and I'll fill it in if it can help solve the problem for us.
If anyone can help with this matter than many thanks in advance.

    Hi Ralph,
Thanks for the links. I have had a look at the ADSL Nation web site, and yes I did set my modem up as they state, the DNS server was removed.
Thinking back to when I had just the modem connected straight to the computer without the Airport (as per you suggestion) and iChat worked including the video, it would make me think that the problem lays with the Airport? But by the sounds of your last post the Airport does not have settings to be able to change DoS or SPI or it does not make any difference anyway/ or it Automatic?? Is that what you mean?
I have noticed on other posts people talking about having a list of ports open for iChat. As on your web site as well. However I think your web site is looking towards iChat3, I think? I'm think that iChat 4 is different when it comes to port opening??. Is this something I have to set up on the Airport and if so how? The list of ports go something like this, that I've seen.....
    5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298 TCP and 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 UDP
I just saw this in a new post.( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1331562&tstart=0 )
Are they ports on the Airport or iMac? I was thinking that by adding the iChat to the list on the Firewall that all the ports that need to be open would be opened by Leopard? Or do I need to do this manually as well on the Airport? Does Bonjour have anything to do with this? Is that something I need to look into.
Thanks for the on going help with this one, it seems to be a strange one!

  • The big iChat problems. Audio/Video (now completely broken in 10.7.3), the "not-authorized" problem

So, I am running iChat on OS X Lion 10.7.3 on an early-2011 MBP 13'' . These problems have been here for a while, though (I got my comp with 10.7.0). I have AIM/GMail/Yahoo connected..
One problem is the issue of non-authorized people. There is a list of "not authorized" people that I have to scroll past in my "offline" section of iChat buddies before I actually get to the real offline contacts. Big note here: All these people have the address (something)@aol.com. These contacts have come up as a result of my gmail connection. You see, a few months ago Gmail and AIM did this chat unification process where @aol.com contacts can be just added into Gmail for chatting. These @aol.com copies come up asking for an invite when the REAL AIM address person talks to me. The invites leave once I press decline, but then they stay on my list as not authorized. If I delete these "not-authorized" copies, the invites will come up again and the cycle will repeat. It is a nuisance considering how much of these false contacts are on my list.
Second problem is video/audio chat in general. This issue really applies on AIM/Yahoo—there is nothing for Gmail because people usually use the web interface which simply doesn't work with iChat video/audio. If the people used Google talk, the issue written below would probably come up.
See, what happens is that…(now in 10.7.3), video/audio chat is simply broken, simple as that. My contacts always tell me that an error has occurred when trying to accept my video chat invite. It simply doesn't work. They are using AIM desktop in most cases. When it DID used to work (to a very limited extent, I'll say; it was hit or miss earlier pre 10.7.3, now it's just miss), it was just video but NO audio. They could see/hear me, I could only see them. When I did audio chats, they hear me, I..don't hear them (so audio chats were pointless). The only case where this problem doesn't happen is where it's Mac to Mac, iChat to iChat. VERY limited in use of audio/video chat, if you ask me.

    Hi,
If AIM contacts have been added to your Google Buddy List then I would login to Google and remove them from there  (the iGoogle or GoogleMail web pages will show the Chat option)
Whilst they are still in the List then the Authorization request will probably be resent (In this case it is probably being generated by the method Google are using to add the AIM names as iChat only sends it once).
Google/Jabber Video chats is only iChat to iChat and so is Yahoo with iChat 6.
The Yahoo App streams Video which People can be allowed to see and Audio is added in as an Audio Chat.
The connection Process is not the same and iChat/AIM
Jabber and Google use Jingle to Connect (in fact Google's version is not that compatible with other Jabber apps).
This means iChat to the Standalone PC app  or any Web Browser using the Google Video Plug-in (PC or Mac) or to any Jabber app that is using a Google ID (or a Jabber ID) will not work.
On the iChat to AIM on a PC.
This has always been a bit of a hit and miss affair.
Some people have no trouble but other spend ages trying to set things up and never find the solution.
This is the Original Users Tip  (up to about AIM5.9)
A "replacement" for that tip that has not made it across yet.
I have yet to try Video to the Web Login version that is now on offer.
However I would limit the Bandwidth in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (possibly try 200kbps for 1-1 chats) as you will not know the interent speed available to the Buddy if they are using the web login.
    Comparisons
When you compare iChat actual functions to what you would like it to do it can appear to be limited.
On the basis that you would want your IM app to be able to have Buddies from other services listed in a Buddy list (combined) or Lists which apps do you know of can do that and Video to some of them ?
Adium and ProteusX can both have Buddies from the major Services ina  Buddy List but don't do Audio or Video.
Yahoo and MSN both allow the other's Buddies in the list but I am not sure about Video or Audio chats
They cannot connect to Jabber or AIM buddies even for text chats.
Jabber does depend on the server you use and whether that does Transports for you to have text chats with other services.
    Instructions for iChat.
Mercury IM is a JAVA version of MSN and still has not got to Audio and Video
    Similar for aMSN
    Gizmo5 and YakforFree both died...
Skype is Cross Platform  but is only 1-1 in Video chat.  (cost extra for 3 and 4 way chats)
Yahoo had dropped support for their Mac version now iChat has the Yahoo option  (you can still download it  - IT being the beta it has been for  years).

  • Ichat theater - no audio ?

today i watched a movie using ichat theater.
it is .avi and works on my laptop and it worked on the app, too.
but when it started, i unplugged my headphones, and the audio stopped.
then i closed it, and shared the file again. this time, the audio didn't work at all.
i re-lauched our AV conversation and shaered the file once more. i plugged in my headphones. audio, then no audio.
i tried a third time, keeping the headphones in and it worked fine.
    why was this happening?
also, the other person and i could hear each other talk through all of this and the video quality was good as well as audio (when it did work).
and i just now did some software updates, but are there ones for ichat that going to apple>software updates won't bring up?

    Hi,
My Headphones have a 3.5mm jack that cuts the Audio Line Out circuit when the jack is inserted.
Do you have a 3.5mm headset or are we talking about a USB connection ?
If USB it will show up in System Preferences > Sound > Output as a separate item and also in iChat in the Video Section.
If you are then "changing" outputs you need to change the choice in both places.
The other possible is that it is a protection factor as you insert or remove the Headphones if a 3.5mm jack

  • IChat video and audio not working (yep, me too). Help? Help!? etc. :)

I'm not here to start a rant about Apple or iChat AV. Before 10.4.4, my mate and I had some great chats on iChat AV. He had a cam attached to his Mac and I could see the video absolutely fine. We used to do audio chat, too. It worked fine.
Now we're both on 10.4.4 and I've got a built-in iSight on my new iMac. Obviously, I want to try out some 2-way video now. It won't work for me, though.
We can text chat, we can send files. We can't use audio chat anymore and neither can we use video. It's the old 'did not respond' problem.
Nothing has changed in my setup, connection-wise. I've got a healthy broadband connection which is connected to a BT Voyager 250 modem. Connected to this, via ethernet, is my Airport Express.
I've tried eliminating the Airport Express from the setup, but it makes no difference in this case.
I don't really know a lot about port forwarding and telnet sessions, so... be gentle. Hopefully someone here can help get it working.
    Many thanks,
    B

  • Imovie defaults to audio fade-in.

When I split a clip, detach audio to play over previous clip as a lead-in to the clip iMovie defaults to "fade in" on the clip. Deselecting the fade-in box is ineffective. Is there something i can do about this?

First you need to enable the Advanced Tools in the Preferences, go to the iMovie menu > Preferences > Check Show Advanced Tools:
Try turning on the 'Waveform' button in the upper part of the iMovie window:
It sits right next to the zoom slider underneath the Project Browser in iMovie '11. And in this screenshot above it's colored in light blue when it is turned on, just click on it to toggle it on and off. Once it's turned on you'll see the audio waveform underneath your video clip like this:
In the blue area near the upper left and right corners are two little pointy 'handles' that designate how the 'fade in' and fade out rates occur. Drag the handle from the left corner towards the middle of the wave form. That will fade in the audio as the video clip is playing. But to have it 'fade in' underneath the video clip requires one more step and that requires the Precision Editor. <CTRL> + click on the video clip and choose Precision Editor.
In the lower half of the iMovie app window you'll see a timeline with the transition point between your black background and the video clip. Turn on the Audio waveform tool in this Editing window as well. In the video clip section drag the little audio offset bar in the 'waveform area' below the video clip to the left:
The amount you drag it to the left determines how quickly the audio starts while playing underneath the preceding black background you have placed on the timeline. So drag it as far as you would like. I don't know how well this will work if you have a 'cross-dissolve' transition placed between the black background and the video clip. This may not work for you if you are also using the cross dissolve to fade the video as well.

  • IChat Screen Share Audio

    Hello,
Does any know how to turn off the audio portion of a screen share in iChat?
    Thanks!
    ebrind

I've received a similar error message. Try reducing the Bandwidth limit in iChat preferences. If it is set to "none" then I suspect you are experiencing the same phenomena as I have experienced. This occurs when multiple users are running under a mixture of broadband technologies and efficiencies. e.g. DSL vs. Cable. Satellite broadband can be worse.
We theorize that your/our Cable broadband bandwidth is so fast that the sync'ing or handshaking between the machines is outrunning one or all of your participants. This situation would occur when you or one of your participants is running broadband under DSL and the other(s) are running under Cable broadband. So if you're running at a 15Mbps download stream and a 2Mbps upload stream and one of your friends is running on DSL usually 768/368Kbps then there is a broadband mis-match. You'll "time-out" on the sync'ing and handshaking hence the error "you did not respond"!
Try resetting your Bandwidth Limit in iChat Preferences/Video to 1Mbps, and restart iChat. If that doesn't work reset to 500Kbps/restart etc. until it works.
Plz post if this resolves the problem.

  • Ichat video and audio freeze

Im running a brand new macbook pro my friend has a brand new macbook basic. Ichat works fine, video and audio work fine but after about 5 minutes they freeze, "connection error". Screen sharing freezes as well but I don't get the error message. Regular text chat is the only one that works. What's the deal?

  • IChat Screen Sharing:  Audio works but video is a white screen.

I am having a problem using iChat screen sharing with a specific computer.  We are both running OS 10.7.4.   I have a Mac Book Pro (fall 2011) and he has a iMac one to two years old.  We have tried contacting apple support but no luck yet.  We tried setting up a test user to see if the problem was user specific but encountered the same problem.  Again, video and text chat work fine.  He can share my screen with no issues.  Only when I ask to share his screen do I get a blank white screen.  Audio works and I can manipulate his curser but all I have is a white screen.  I have tried changing the resolution on his iMac but this has not helped.  Also we are both using Google Talk as the chat server.

    Hi,
Historically iChat Updates came in OS updates.
Not every OS update had an iChat update but that was the way they were delivered.
Only twice during the lifetime of iChat 3 have there ever been standalone Updates outside of this.
Most Updates are now through the App Store but Software Update can still be used (I have mine set on Daily despite Apple's Updates normally coming on Tuesdays)
One person stated he thought there had been a change with OS 10.8.1 saying the Build number of Messages had changed.
In my experience it has not and when Apple do update something the build Number and Version number change.
It is widely know that Apple send Developers and others advance copies of the OS to try out.
Those people sign NDAs (Non Disclosure Agreements) so you will not see any discussion of any up and coming stuff on this site.

  • IChat Error (Video, Audio, and Screen Sharing)

I received a Black Macbook for Christmas, and have not had any problems with it until today. Yesterday I installed 2GB of Kingston RAM that I ordered online from Newegg, and today I cannot do anything in iChat besides chat. Whenever I attempt to start an audio chat, video chat, or screen sharing, I recieve an error.
"There was a communication error during your chat."
"______ cancelled the connection. You can send details about this problem to Apple to help improve future versions of iChat"
I've tried it with 3 different people and it gives me the same error.
Last week I was video chatting and screen sharing fine with the same people.
I don't see how it would affect it but is there any chance it was caused by the RAM? Other than that I have had no problems at all. :\
    Thanks in advance. ^_^

    I fixed the problem. ^_^
If anyone else has this problem, it might be caused by internet sharing. I had internet sharing setup with my 360, as soon as I cut that off it worked fine.

  • IChat issue - no Audio

    Hi,
Is there anyone here that had an issue with their new Intel-based iMacs wherein the video is fine but there's no audio being heard by the other end? - I can hear the other person but he can't hear me.
We both have an AIM account and the only application I have opened was iChat. Speakers and mic levels during Video Preview were fine on both sides. Thanks.

iMac Dual Core Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Have you installed any third-party plugins for use with iChat? The below might be worth a shot!
    from KB doc 300832
Some audio applications may change your computer's audio settings to a sample rate that is too high for other applications to use. In this situation, system alert sounds still work, and does iTunes, but other applications may have no sound (audio output). This document applies to Mac OS X 10.3 or later and applications that use QuickTime 6 or later for audio, such as Safari and Quicktime Player.
    Solution
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

  • IChat unable to audio only chat to AIM pc user

Hi. I have never been able to audio only chat to AIM pc (Vista) user. Every time it starts to connect, say "connecting" then fails and said user declined invitation. Which I know she has not, this also happens with another friend of mine (Win XP). Does anyone know a fix for this? Are there any special settings, mac or pc end? Thanks.

AIM on a PC is now at version 6.8
This version is actually still in beta as well.
the Support Pages at AIM only list that AIM 6.5 (the previous version) does not Video chat to iChat.
AIM 6.1 did but is no longer downloadable.
AIM 5.9 is still downloadable for XP users (it does not work in Vista)
Trillian Pro is an option as it has worked since AIM 5.9 (it's a PC App)
Also try Mebeam. This uses Flash in a Web Browser and can create Video Chat rooms for just you and your Buddy.

  • Lync Web App default Prompt Audio Join

Is it Is there a way to force Web App to ask all users how they want to join audio? (Lync, dialin, Call me)
At the moment i'm having to have the user connect then go to settings set prompt me, then disconnect and reconnect seems a bit long winded.

This a huge weakness in an otherwise superb product!  I have successfully convinced my management that we should cancel WebEx in favor of Lync for all but our Training and Event uses.  However, there's no way I can ask even the friendliest of customers
to go through all the steps to enable this
    very basic capability:
Log in for the first time
Don't forget to click the "Remember Me" box!  (duh)
You will be dumped into the first meeting using your computer's audio.
NOTE: You will be muted, but your whole office will hear the rest of us talking until you complete steps 4 through 7.
    Click "Options"
    Click "Phones"
Make a selection on what you prefer for the future or prompt each time <--- this should be the default!!!!
    Exit meeting
    Close browser
    Click the join link again
Now you can use your phone
This is utterly unacceptable.  I realize Microsoft would like everyone on the planet to own a USB headset but that is simply not the case (yet) and to foist this default behavior on unsuspecting business contacts is just not an option.  We will
be sticking with WebEx until this can be addressed.
Very disappointed - and not looking forward to the conversation I'll have with my boss on Monday.

  • Default Chapters Audio

I have a project created in iDVD but on one of the chapters page I lost the default audio. I did a search for the audio clip to drag it back in but no luck on finding it. Is there a way to get back to the default audio for the themes or do I have to start the project over?

I'm not currently on my own startup volume and searching this iDvd forum for the correct info I need is hampered without my own bookmarks.... But I did find this:
