IChat & Direcway Satellite Internet?

Hey all.. My sister (unfortunately) has satellite internet by way of Direcway. We've had very limited success with video & audio connectivity. The system has pretty serious latency between request and result, and I'm wondering if perhaps this would cause the chat requests to fail (we both get the obligatory "did not respond" message). I've had her open up the ports as suggested in a number of posts here, we've knocked our bandwidth limits to their lowest settings as well but to no avail. I have no problem connecting with others from my machines, and I'm on a full T1.
Has anyone used, with success, iChat AV's audio & video features with satellite internet?
thanks in advance,
-greg-

Hi Greg,
I would move in the Other direction.
Set the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming speed to match her max download.
Set iChat > Preferences > Video section Banwidth Limit to none.
Unfortunately Satelite for this is pants.
Things to try involve trying to beat the latency between starting a chat and full speed of the uplink.
Try a iTune Store sample as a download to fool the system into thinking it is going to run at full tilt.
Also try sending a file from her end first to you to get the uplink speed as high as it cn be before the chat starts.
Or updating her web pages if she has any.

  • IChatAV3 and Satellite Internet

Since I live in the swamps and Bellsouth only has dialup, I have subscribe to WildBlue Satellite Internet. My downlink is 1Mbps and uplink is 200Kbps. The downlink works pretty good but my problem is with the uplink. Various testing indicators say I am really doing about 168 Kbps uplink. And that is about what I really should expect.
The problem is, iChat sees the uplink as less than 50Kbps and therefore you know what that means. I have been through the FAQs and tried to ensure the speeds, ports, firewalls, setups, etc. I have my streaming speed set to my downlink of 1Mbps. The WildBlue technicians tell me that satellite delays is what the problem could be. And also that it is an iChat software problem.
    Help!!

    Hi LA Sculler,
This is normally down to the latency of the modem.
They are often set so that the data rate is slower when the use is low and it speeds up as you put through or request more data.
iChat requires that the speed is there from the moment you start up iChat as it takes a reading from the Quicktime setting.
It is often difficult if not impossible to fool the modem (such as listening a sample of a iTunes store file) to get the modem to tell iChat that the connection speed is fast enough.

  • Satellite internet users cannot connect to Flash based online multiplayer games

    Hello,
I have found that Satellite internet users are unable to
connect to the game Club Penguin because of the recent security
fixes that have been added to the flash player over the last 6
months or so. Club Penguin used to require at least Flash Player 7
to run, at this time satellite users could connect.
They recently upgraded their system to require Flash player 9
or higher, since this update no satellite users can connect if they
have the newest versions of Flash. If they revert back to the Flash
Player 9r47 they can then connect to the game. Of coarse this opens
the computer up to the exploits that have been fixed.
Anyone have any idea of how to notify Adobe of this issue? Or
possibly another way to make it work with the newest versions of
    Flash Player?

Does this problem with your Internet satellite happen only with this game? You might want to contact your Internet provider as I'm sure they will be able to work with Adobe in fixing the problem.

  • Has anyone else a large amount of bandwidth being used when running the new iOS 7? I have satellite internet with a fixed gigabyte allowance a month.

I am seeing bandwidth spikes when using the new iOS 7. I have satellite internet so I have a monthly gigabyte allowance. When the ipad is in sleep mode or just doing casual browsing it is fine. But for example, last night I put the ipad in airplane mode and this morning when I took it out and it reconnected to my router it immediately sucked up ~300mbs of bandwidth. I know for the majority of people this no big deal but when you are on a fixed amount a month this becomes costly! Is there anyone else noticing this, and what appears to be happening? I never had this problem with ios6.
    Thanks!

  • Can we get satellite internet on ipod 4th generation?

can we get satellite internet on ipod 4th generation?

    What happens when you try?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Clean Access and satellite internet

We have NAC 4.1.6 enabled for our IPSec VPN client users, and have at least one user coming in from a HughesNet satellite Internet connection. When he connects via HughesNet, the VPN connection works fine but the NAC agent will not run and check his machine. However, when he uses any other type of Internet connection (including a Verizon aircard), NAC works properly.
Has anyone experienced this, and is there a fix or workaround? He's running the 4.1.6 Windows agent. Thanks.

Try connecting the console directly to the router which is connected to the internet and check if it works. If it works then you will only have to change the MTU size on the ASA. Another option will be to have the console connect directly to the internet bypassing the CCA.

  • ITunes and Satellite Internet daily limit don't mix!! Help....

I have satellite internet which has a daily download cap. I can download unlimited mbps from 2AM to 7AM. ITunes music/videos use up a lot of mbps when I buy music. I am looking for a program that I can use that will manage the itunes music downloads during 2am-7am only so that I can still buy music, but don't have to go over my limit. Does anyone know of such a program?? Or any other ideas I could try that would help me to stay within my limits?

Set your iTunes to not "automatically download" your purchases. Then you can engage the downloads during a time that costs less.
Ultimately, it may not be as straight forward, but if you do engage a download, and it's poor timing, you can pause it and resume when ready. This might be annoying if you purchase several items and EACH has to be paused, but it will accomplish what you wish.
    Another alternative is this:
    Use playlists and "Gift" yourself.
I have done this in the past to accomplish a single-click-buy for multiple random items I want to get in one step.
    1) Create a playlist from iTunes store items: Just drag items to a created playlist.
    2) GIFT the playlist to yourself.
    3) Redeem the playlist of items when downloading is cheap.
    I hope something here helps.

  • EA3500 and Satellite Internet

I used the CD to set up my new EA3500 with my Wild Blue Satellite internet modem.
An IPhone or IPad can connect and work like a charm, remaining rock solid at all times.  Windows 7 on the other hand, will work and then lose connection to the internet.  The PC appears to remain connected to the EA3500, but the connection between the EA3500 and modem appear to be lost.  I can click on the bar Icon at the bottom and it shows everything to be fine.  I click on disconnect and then wait a few seconds and click on connect again and it works for a few minutes before having to do it again.
When I look at the router properties the CD set it up for DHCP.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Larry

Thanks very much for the response.
Yes I am trying to use the laptop wireless and if I can get it to work reliably, will set up another laptop on the wireless.  I will take your suggested router settings and see what I can do with them.  I have cables to the laptop locations that I have not even tried to connect to the EA3500.  Worst case, I may try that if I can't get the wireless to work.
To be clear, when the laptop loses connection in the network diagram it shows the connection broken between the router and modem, while it shows the connection from router to laptop to still be solid.
BTW, I must be using the classic firmware because I have not changed anything.
    Thanks again.

  • Location Services with satellite internet connection

I have a 5th generation iPod Touch. I connect to internet at home through wifi router connected to satellite internet modem and dish (Hughes). My location services always says that it cannot determine my location. Is this typical of a satellite dish connection?
    Thanks

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database does not included your router.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

  • Airport + Netgear + satellite internet problems

I have just bought a netgear router and satellite internet service. I took my G5 Quad to the Apple store and had an Airport card installed.
The router is connected to the satellite modem. The card is in in the computer. I followed the instructions that came with the router, but they seem heavily weighted toward PC. For Mac, they say I must do a "manual install." The instructions also seem to assume that my computer is connected by wire to the router, but the whole point of the router is to connect wirelessly to the satellite's modem, which is in a different room from the computer.
The mac Airport Set-up Assistant quickly reaches a dead end when it finds out I am not using AirBase. The Network section of System Preferences wants to know what network I'm joining. I have only one computer at present and am not therefore setting up a network, unless computer + router = network.
I have spent the past two days searching Apple Discussions, the NetGear website, and the Hughesnet website and am now completely turned around and lost. I feel like I'm either missing a crucial piece of the puzzle or that this process requires a much higher level of expertise than I would have expected for such a common task.
If anyone can offer any suggestions on what to do next, I would be very grateful.
    G5 Quad 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   dial-up internet connection

You will need to connect the Netgear router to ur G5 using a cable for the initial setup.
First, set your G5 ethernet to use DHCP for IP address.
2rd, Power up the netgear router. (doesnt matter if you disconnect the WAN at this point)
3nd, Connect your G5 to one of the netgear LAN port.
4th, At this point, the IP address for your G5 ethenet should be something like 192.168.1.X.
5th, Open Safari and go to http://192.168.1.1
6th, Enter user name and password. (user name should be admin and password should be "password") *I think
7th, Once you are in the router configuration page, you should be able to change all the setting on the router to work with your interenet and wirless setup
8th, Copy down the wireless setting on a piece of paper (SSID and WPA key)
9th Once you've done setting up the router, save the setting and power down the router
10th Connect the router to your satellite modem
11th Add a new network under Airport using the inforation you've copy on step 8.
    12th Enjoy the wireless internet.
    Hope this help.

  • Mysterious downloading causing satellite internet to go over limit

Sorry for the long post. I have tried a lot of ways to answer my question, or fix my problem.
II have a 3 year old Intel Mac, still working great. Where we live our only high speed option is satellite, so we subscribe to hughesnet. Our downloads are limited to 375 meg per day.
We don't have a real problem staying under, but when it locks ups to 14.4 kbs, we know we have gone over. I eventually installed a few programs to let me know if it was my kids downloading stuff and not telling me, or something else. I installed two download monitoring programs, and Spector for Mac.
In the last month, there have been two incidents where massive downloading caused us to go over the daily limit. Hughesnet has at times locked us out claiming we went over - the download monitors were installed to verify this, and proved otherwise.
However, these last two times, the download monitors verified a download of over 300 meg within the space of an hour, part of the time while I was on the computer.
I have tried every way in the world to discover what the culprit was, what the files were, but I cannot.
I have checked the download records and histories of all three browsers, and these show nothing. Spector verified almost no browser use during the time in question.
I checked Itunes to see if anything, whether music, movies or podcasts had been added during that time frame. Nothing.
I checked the date of files in the download folder, both "created" and "modified". Nothing there.
I check the software updater(This had been a problem in the past). The log of downloaded updates shows no activity there as well.
My e-mail program didn't show any automatic downloads with massive file attachments, either.
It left me scratching my head.
After this happened a few weeks ago, I downloaded a 30-day trial of Intego Internet Security Barrier X6. Virus program, firewall, and a couple of other programs, I updated it and did a virus/trojan scan on my computer, with no results. I was completely clean. The antivirus program really slowed down the Mac, of course, and it got so bad that after a few days i couldn't take any more, so I uninstalled it.
The only options I haven't tried yet are scanning the backup drive( assumed this was scanned at the same time when I scanned the main nard drive, but am not sure) and possible a couple of other partitions. I have Windows XP installed on this computer through bootcamp, but haven't booted up in over 2 months. I also have a second version of windows installed within the mac osx partition through a Virtualbox program. I don't know if a virus could be hiding in there, but I am relatively certain that I installed antivirus protection on it and updated it as well. Even at that, I don't know if a trojan or virus could be play havoc while the program is turned off.
That is what I have done so far, and am out of ideas. Does anyone know of a way I can track down what this was?
If not, does anyone know of a program that could monitor this in the future and alert me to massive unauthorized downloads?
All comments and ideas are appreciated.
    Fred

There may be a way to monitor who (else) may have access, presumably
unauthorized and more possible if you have a local wireless aspect to your
home or business network where someone else not so far away could get in.
As both up and down load activities can be monitored, are you able to tell if
some of your usage is due to something in the computers "calling out" online
and them perhaps something else connecting back to your computers? The
app Little Snitch will tell what may be attempting some connections out.
Sometimes, you can tell if another computer is on a local network, unless that
owner or user has somehow set their computer to be invisible to a network it
may be borrowing internet access from.
Do you have any apps that offer an option to provide backups online to some
outside server? Some kinds of products can offer web-dependent services.
Even widgets in DashBoard can consume bandwidth. I have and use a widget
that turns off all widgets until I launch DashBoard. Dash-quit is a handy tool.
    {Having dual operating systems in the computers, possibly could be an issue;
but whether or not your configurations are accessing the internet somehow,
is an unknown to me. If the Windows systems can't go online while you aren't
    using them, maybe those aren't a probable cause of this; until they actually are.}
Is the network usage statistic based on mbps, kbps or some other set of numbers
where your version may appear different than that of the provider? Some of the
math (like MB vs. GB in drive capacities; comparing grapes and bananas) can be
harder to follow if one entity derives their quota from a different connection math.
Almost as bad in a few cases, as the cited hard disk drive capacities, when there
may be two different kinds of numbers!
I've only used dialup, ADSL, and some low-end cable internet. Had dish TV but
at the time, they offered nothing for internet; except weather outages of all signal.
    If you have nothing checking for automatic updates, including apps that may offer it;
and have the firewall set to not allow some invasive efforts of outside connections
to try and hook up to your network, and no body accessing your satellite internet via
a wireless component whose security is not what it should be; I am not so sure what
kind of other thing you'd need to be looking into at this point. Apparently something.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Airport with satellite internet

I have satellite internet and am trying to set up an airport extreme. My modem is OK via eithernet. My Airport seems to be creating a wireless network but with no internet access. Any ideas?

Many satellite providers use private IP addresses.. 10.x.x.x
If you have the airport setup to default also using 10.0.1.x for LAN it simply will not work.
You will need to move the IP of the AE to a different range..
The AE should be in router mode, ie DHCP and NAT.
Then go to network options and change its IP to 192.168.

  • Satellite Internet providers

Depending on how much bandwidth they use, dropping the internet and adding more data to their cellular plan and using that might be better. I have a friend that does that. They live just outside of city limits, satellite internet was costly and slow and would sometimes go out. All they do is mostly browse the web and email, and sometimes Pandora when company is over, streaming it to a wireless speaker in their home. So they do the hotspot with their provider (AT&T) which at the time doubled their data at no extra cost through some promotion and they get roll over data. So what used to be a 10 GB plan turned into a 20 GB plan and they get data roll over on top of that. They do not do any heavy data intensive stuff, but for what they were paying through satellite internet, they took some of that and applied it to their cellular data plan...

We were just discussing this in another recent post - although there question was a bit different as it included a VoIP element:http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1081083-would-you-consider-satellite-internet-for-business-int...
At the end of the day Satellite is pretty much a last resortas you literally are sending traffic to space and back to get out to the internet (think 750ms+ latency)and there usually is something better out there. You'll always be able tofind some enterprise class, SLA'd options available (Enterprise LTE, T1/DDM, maybe Fiber), it's the cheap DSL and COAX that is usually tough to get once you get out there a ways - although it does sounds like you have a cable option now so that raises some questions. We are a telecom master agency partnered with hundreds of ISP's all over the world. We do a lot in rural areas...

  • VPN and Satellite Internet

Is this possible? I have a vpn connection currently w/ broadband internet. Moving to rural area. Can only get satellite internet. Is there one satellite internet service that is compatible with a vpn connection?

You'd have to check with each specific provider to see what they recommend.
One option is to use SSL vpn instead of ipsec.

  • Need a slow download option for Satellite Internet Connections

Adobe Acrobat X fails to download completely when using Satellite internet connections.  The executable downloads but the 51Mbytes of software only gets part way through before failing as it is requires cable/ADSL speeds.
Please, those of us in the country who are remote, rely on satellite internet to reduce travel costs.  It would be nice if adobe would provide a download option for slow connections.
