IChat doesn't recognize password, Wrong name in account window

Hello,
I got a new iMac in Sept., and haven't been able to log in to my ichat account. When opening iChat and trying to change my account status to Available (or anything) a window pops up wanting me to put in my password, I do, and it says
"iChat can’t log in because your login ID or password is incorrect."
I know it's the right password, and have tried deleting and creating new accounts a few times, but this window always comes up and never lets me in.
The other strange thing is that my name is not correct in the buddy window, for my account. I have no idea how that name got in there, I don't think I would have put it in anywhere, I wonder if it's pulling from some address book or something? No clue.
Even when I create a new account and password, the same window above comes up.
I looked at some existing discussions and regarding the Server Settings tab in the Preferences window, my server is "api.oscar.aol.com", is this right? I read it should have google in the name??
Thank you for your help in advance, this is crazy!

HI,
So Lion (OS 10.7.x) mean iChat 6 (possibly version 6.0.1)
IF we are talking about the Buddy List and clicking on the Name or Screen Name that appears there it is a drop down.
The "Name" will be pulled from the Address Book  (Check the Address Book My card (The one with the head a shoulders icon) This should be your details.  If Not find your Details and then use the Card Menu > Make this My Card)
The "Handle" is the Screen name of Jabber ID for that Buddy list.
If you are using an Apple ID (Ending @mac.com or @me.com) then it is possible to create password that is longer than the AIM servers can deal with
Apple somewhat encourage longer passwords for higher security bit the AIM servers can only deal with a max of 16 characters.
Use the iForgot site to change the password if required.

CAN ANYONE HELP??  I ALSO NEED TO KNOW WHICH/WHAT TO PICK FOR MY MAIL CLIENT. I'VE TRIED THREE DIFFERENT THINGS AND NONE OF THEM WORK!

Mail would be a good choice, unless you are using another email client, like Outlook. There is likely something wrong with the account setup in iPhoto. You may need to delete the account you set up and enter it again if you want to send with iPhoto instead of with Mail.
Give this a try to see what might be wrong: Drag a photo from iPhoto onto the Mail icon in the Dock. It will create a new message with the photo attached. If you click on the photo in Mail, it should show a popup menu to allow you to set the image size to send.
Check out some of the links in the More Like This section to the right. There might be some other suggestions.

  • Mail doesn't recognize password after upgrading to Mountain Lion

    After updgrading to Mountain Lion:
The gmail account in Mail began to ask for its password. it is preseent [in dots]; when i click to continue, dialog box indicates it doesn't recognize it.
i had time to to go over details in a gmail help page with details (port numbers and other things).
    I decided to start over.
I deleted the account in Mail, system preferences, Accounts, began anew. Later I deleted inactive Gmail from  menu, Mail. Contacts & Calendars.
Reading some interventions in Communities mentioned the Key Chain. I had changed the Gmail password while using an older Mac Book. In June i purshased a MacBook Air and had Apple migrate my files from the old to the new mac. Mail had not password problems until I updated to Mountain Lion, which I thoroughly enjoy.
    I'm at my wits end.
Throughout all this, Mail on my ipodtouch o.k.
    I appreciate help.

Is it sleeping or shutting down?

  • CC doesn't recognize that I have an account and signed in

I am signed in, I open photoshop or illustrator and I get the 'continue trial' box.  I have CC on two machines- one laptop (Macbook pro) and one desktop (macpro) and on the macbook pro the application manager doesn't recognize that I have paid for the subscription.  I have signed out and then signed back in a few times but no help

Illustrator CS6 on Mac OSX Lion.  It crashed once when we were trying to save, and once when we tried to reopen a file.  When it crashes we reopen it, sign in again (this is when the trail message comes up).  It signs in fine, but the file gets corrupted.
Right now I just uninstalled and reinstalled and will see if that helps.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't recognize password

My daughter's MacBookPro does not recognize the password when connecting to our home WiFi.  Two iphones and 2 MacAirs connect without issues. Hardware is Netgear N150 router and an Apple Airport.  Have been using this set up for about 3-4 years and have had no problems till now.  No changes have been made to any of the components that I am aware of. The key chain shows that she is using the propper password. Any suggestions.  I am really a PC guy but my kids have Macs.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • IChat doesn't recognize anyone when I try to send message.(AIM)

I rarely have any problems logging onto iChat, but when I message someone and try to send a message a window appears that reads, "Add at least on person to this chat before sending the first message". It seems as if they don't even recognize them. Sometimes, iChat will just quit and a different window will appear and it says that iChat has quit unexpectedly and then asks if I want to relaunch, report, or to just ignore. This problem has recently occurred. I usually have no problem with the application.

    Hi Britany,
I have a system for getting to read all the posts.
First of All I get Emails as I am Susbcribed to every thread I have already Replied to.
Once I have read these and update them if required I use the Back to Forum link and start with the oldest unread thread.
Just because I have not replied means that I have either been sleeping or working.
Both Defcom and I are in the UK so there is also the Time Zone factor to add in.
A chat window that opens in the manner you describe is actually a Group chat window used for Group chats/Chatrooms.
In the View menu you get the option to display the Chat Participants.
Sometimes iChat does seem to take it into it's head that it wants to start a group chat when you have not asked it to.
The other issues also points to an issue with iChat.
I would start with deleting com.apple.ichat.plist
You will have to go to your Home Folder then the Library then Preferences manually by clicking the folders.
    Restart iChat afterwards.

  • Mac Mail doesn't recognize password but iCloud does

Beginning yesterday the Mac Mail stopped recognizing my password.
    iCloud does recognize it.
Checked all the online sources for Preferences and all seems to match the recommendations.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

  • I am trying to shut down my computer after disconnecting my modem because I haven't been able to get an email out.  But when I shut it off a screen comes up saying the server doesn't recognize the 500 names.  I can't get to the bottom of the screan

My computer will not shut down after trying to send an email.  A screan came up saying the server doesnt recognize the emails.  And I can't scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if there is something to cancel or click on.  How do I get to the bottom of the page?

You may have to just force quit the app in question.  Why on earth would you try and email 500 people all at once?  Email servers specifically won't accept emails with that many recipients depending on email service you have.
Anyway, to force quit the app, just right-click on the app icon and choose force quit off the menu.

  • Mail doesn't recognize a domain name when composing an email

I was trying to email someone from a certain company/vendor, but I didn't remember the reps name.
I knew that their business name was in their domain name though, so I tried typing that into the To: field.
To my surprise, Mail didn't find anything.
Is there a way to turn this feature on, or else can I submit it as a feature request?
I realize that it's possible to use the search box to search for past emails containing a domain name, but this clearly is not my intention, I wanted to compose an email
    Thanks

  • Tbird will not recognize password for new TWC account, which is active. So, cannot set up email

Trying to set up an existing email account on Tbird. It will not recognize my password. Well, TWC does. Why doesn't Tbird? How do I add this account?

Thunderbird does not "recognize" and email password. It provides the one you stored in it to the email server when asked for one. It would be the email server rejecting it.
If you are sure you have the correct password then it might be the format of your username or some other server setting that is incorrect.
Get a list of server settings from your provider and make sure they are correct in Thunderbird.
Pay attention to your username format. Some providers want just the username and others want the entire thing including the @provider.com.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPOD Nano (2nd Gen), but Windows XP does

I'm a longtime happy owner of an IPOD Mini and bought a second Gen IPOD Nano a few months ago that works great. I have two identical P4 Sony Vaios that I back up/clone from one to the other every so often to keep them as identical as possible. It's been some months though since I've backed up/cloned my primary laptop to the secondary, and the 2nd Gen Nano isn't being recognized by ITunes on my primary laptop, only my secondary laptop. However Windows recognizes the Nano just fine on the primary laptop on all 3 USB 2.0 ports (I haven't tried my Mini recently), and I can browse the file system of the Nano, but ITunes just doesn't see it.
As I mentioned, my secondary laptop works just fine with the Nano, both Windows XP AND ITunes recognizes it and can update it, but I don't want to have to use that computer JUST for updating my IPOD, and pretty soon I need to back up my primary laptop to my secondary. I've actually only been holding off on that because I can't get my Nano to be recgonized by ITunes with my primary laptop and don't want to screw them both up. Cloning my secondary laptop to become my primary isn't an option, the file system is many months outdated, I need to get the Nano working with ITunes on my primary laptop.
This is definitely a software/driver/service issue, I can take the hard drive out of my secondary laptop, put it in my primary, and ITunes will recognize the Nano just fine. I can take the hard drive out of my primary laptop, put it in my secondary, and ITunes can't see the Ipod. I've upgraded ITunes twice on the primary laptop in the last few months with no improvement, so that hasn't helped.
I really don't know what else to do at this point, I was under the impression that any drivers needed are installed by ITunes, and as long as Windows recognizes the device (which it does) everything should be fine and ITunes should recognize it. I've checked my services and there is only one IPOD related service that I've found (it's actually called "Ipod Service") and I've confirmed that service is running and starts automatically. I presume that service is needed and isn't a legacy from my IPOD Mini and an old version of ITunes.
If, after digesting the above information, anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. This has gotten to be somewhat annoying.
    Thanks
    P4   Windows XP Pro

Nevermind. I uninstalled ITunes completely as well as the IPOD updater program (I think that's what it was basically called) that was installed on my system. I then rebooted, tested the Nano to make sure Windows recognized it, then tested it (successfully) with Winamp and the Winamp IPOD plugin. It was already working properly with Winamp and the IPOD plugin even when ITunes wasn't recognizing it so there was no change there. Once everything checked out I reinstalled the current version of ITunes and it FINALLY recognized the IPOD. It said there was a new software version available for the Nano so I went ahead and allowed it to download and install the update to 1.1. The update went smoothly and once the Nano restarted ITunes again recognized it. No clue what the problem was that created this error condition initially, but perhaps someone else will benefit from this information. I would have thought that reinstalling ITunes at least 3 times, including 2 version upgrades, would have resolved the problem, but it took removing ITunes and the IPOD software completely to resolve it.

  • Windows Vista - IT Store cannot recognize my user name and account?

iTunes store won't accept my account info and let me in to my account. I checked the computer clock and it's correct - not sure what domain/address to use so Windows doesn't block cookies from Itunes store. But anything else I should try? Brand new computer (Dell) with plenty of capacity. New download of iTunes. Want to authorize this computer and move content from my iTouch to new computer. Thanks.

Log into myinfo.apple.com and retype all the info. Maybe even change your password.
