IChat Effects with iMovie 08?

Hi all.
Does anyone know if it's possible to utilize the new iChat effects that are available with 10.5 within iMovie 08? Does Apple Development have any plans to integrate these with the isight recording feature in iMovie '08?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
You can always take a recording with effects from Photo Booth and import it into imovie

  • Photo booth effects with Imovie HD?

I was having a ball with the weird effects of phone booth and thought it would be fun to have those real time effects in Imovie HD so I can record a short video clip instead of just a simple snapshot. Is this possible?

    Robert,
No. I don't think you can.
Here's something I did as a kind of workaround.
Take a series of stills using whatever Photo Booth effect you like.
Now bring those stills into iMovie. Next record a voice over and then click the Editing Button and choose Audio FX. You can then use the Pitch Changer to alter the pitch of your voice.
Moving the slider towards Chipmunk goes particularly well with some of the crazy Photo Booth effects.

  • Ichat backgrounds with imovie?

Can I use the ichat background effects to record a movie with the isight camera in imovie? This should be possible but doesn't seem to be. Thanks!

    Welcome to Discussions, Ermenegildo
I am no certain of exactly what you are trying to do, but you can record "effects" movies using your iSight and Photo Booth. (The Photo Booth version that comes with Leopard also records movies.) By default, the Photo Booth movies are stored in your Pictures > Photo Booth folder.

  • Is it possible to create a "leave colour" effect with imovie? If so how?

I've been messing around with different exposures, saturations etc. all night and I still haven't been able to figure out how to show a black & white clip with one colour (in this case red) for contrast. Any techies out there who can help me please?

    ... "leave colour" effect ...
.. which is widely asked & discribed at any FinalCut/Epress board as 'Schindler's List Effect' (= the red dressed girl in the b/w scenery...)..
no, this is a highly elaborated post-production effect to 'pick' a color, using that as a 'mask' and make any other surrounding b/w...

  • Audio Problems with Fast/Slow/Reverse Effect in iMovie HD

I have been having problems with the Fast/Slow/Reverse effect in iMovie HD with my movie clips. Whenever I apply the effect (reversing at the same playback speed, not sped up or slowed down), when it is finished rendering the audio is choppy, yet on time (but still backwards, as wanted). Before applying the effect, the preview of it works flawlessly, it is only when it is applied that the audio gets choppy. Extracting the audio will not help either because the video will still be playing backwards while the audio will be playing normally (since it can't be reversed on its own). I have tried other effects on the same clips that don't effect the audio and they work perfectly. Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate your help! Thanks.

Have you got an isolated hard drive with ALL of the required applications and other resources together with the operating system ? Using an external HD to SAVE a running iMovie project is asking for problems. Back up the Project on another HD sure, but don't use System on one HD, running files on another.

  • Is it permissible to upload a video on youtube with music, sounds effects, and video effects from imovie?

Lately, I've been editing and making videos for a local church in Mexico. I am not selling any of the videos. The are free to watch. However, is it permissible to upload a video with music, sound effects, and video effects from imovie? I using imovie version 10.0.2

This question comes up from time to time.
There are a number of con-men who think that they can earn a quick buck from claiming that they own the copyright to Apple’s royalty-free jingles and sound effects included with the iLife applications. These are all free to use, as clearly stated in section 2.C of the iLife Software License Agreement:
“You may use the Apple and third party audio content (“Audio Content”) contained in or otherwise included with the Apple software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual samples, sound sets, or audio content may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound files, sound effects or music beds.”

how can i use the KEN BURN effect with TEXT
so it doesnt stay stagnant on the screen
    aside from scrolling and drifting

    Hi
Or if You want to elaborate a bit more You can first
    • make a project where You set text
    • Then Export this as full quality QuickTime .mov
    • Import this new clip and start a new project where You apply Ken-Burns
OR MAY BE doing it the other way around will work better - don't think that Ken-Burns can be applied last
AnyHow - by Export and Import as a part of process one can make extreamly complex sceens.

  • PhotoBooth Glow effect in iMovie?

What might be the best way to get the PhotoBooth Glow effect in iMovie? PhotoBooth video is incredibly jerky... like maybe one sample per second or something like that. I do want to use the iSight camera built into my MacBook Pro, but wanted smoother video if possible.

    Thanks for the star, Steve
Perhaps a more detailed explanation will my suggestion clearer for you.
The alternatives I suggested do not replicate Photo Booth's one-step "Glow" effect recording. Rather, they give you the power to create or simulate them in multiple operations. If they replicated Photo Booth's "Glow" they would likely give the same jerkiness that you are trying to avoid.
Considerable processor power is required to apply and render the effects that make up Photo Booth's "Glow" in real time while video is being captured and recorded. I believe that is why more complex effects like "Glow" cause jerky recording on your MacBook Pro. I do not have an 8-core Mac Pro to test, but my guess is that one of the new, fast 8-core Mac Pros could record Photo Booth's "Glow" smoother than your MacBook Pro does. However, if you only have access to your MBP, the only way I can think of to get a less jerky video that "glows" is to separate recording from rendering the effects.
Macs uses QuickTime file formats everywhere, so there is no mystery in the Photo Booth / iChat commonality. In fact, as explained in Changing the backdrop of a video chat in iChat 4.0 Help on your Mac, iChat can use any image or QuickTime movie, not only those created by Photo Booth (using QuickTime formats), as a custom backdrop.
Photo Booth's "effects" are simply some saved setting "recipes" that use combinations of operations that include some of your Mac's Core Video settings. As explained in the "creating your own "glow" filter" link I provided in your other thread, you can create effects for yourself. However, using this method adds processor workload, so I doubt that creating your own effects would smooth the jerky recordings that you have encountered.
Instead, I suggest that you use iMovie to (1) first record the movie clip, and (2) then add effects one at a time to approximate the look you want while keeping the smoothness of an iMovie recording.
Because these effects use combinations of your Mac's inbuilt Core Video effects, you should be able to approximate the Photo Booth "Glow" that you like by applying combinations of some of iMovie's "Video FX". To simulate the Photo Booth "Glow" effect on an iMovie video clup, some experimentation will be needed to decide which effects to use and where to set the various sliders for those effects.
I started by recording a short video clip in iMovie. Next, I applied maximum "Bloom" effect to the test clip. After "Bloom" rendering was completed, I experimented with the "Brightness & Contrast" settings for the rendered clip. By increasing the Contrast and decreasing the Brightness sliders, I got a smooth video image that I think looks similar to my jerky Photo Booth recording with the "Glow" effect. I finished the simulation by setting the appropriate slider position for the "Peephole" effect. I know that this simulation is not merely a smooth version of the jerky Photo Booth "Glow" video clip. However, it is a smooth recording, and it seems to me to approximates the look of my jerky Photo Booth "Glow" clip. If the same "recipe" does not produce a video that looks like you want, even if you cannot create an exact match, you should be able to come closer with additional experimentation.
I have learned much about iMovie's capability from Karsten, who I consider to be one of the iMovie HD gurus. He has done some amazing things with iMovie HD. If he gives you different advice here, try his first.
    Cheers,

  • Text Effects for iMovie

I am looking for some plug-in text effects for iMovie 08, I could settle for iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Express. Specifically I am looking text bubbles or comic bubbles.
Can anyone help me in my search?
    Thanks
    Gene

I am looking for some plug-in text effects for iMovie 08
iMovie '08 does not currently have a "plug-in" architecture compatible with plug-ins.
I could settle for iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Express.
iMovie HD v6.0.4 is available as a free download to iLife '08 owners.
Specifically I am looking text bubbles or comic bubbles.
Such effects are easily created with most graphic applications and can be applied from within iMovie '08.

  • All of the free music that comes with iMovie is suddenly missing. How do I get it back?

I wanted to start a new project in iMovie, and I realized all of the iLife music is gone. I'm not talking about my iTunes songs, which are all there. I'm talking about the free music that comes with iMovie/iLife. I used some of the music in a previous project, and that still plays, but I can't access the music anymore from the music tab.
The iLife sound effects are still there, but all the music is gone.
    Please help.

I can't see any folder called 'iLife Sound Effects'. Also, I cant find any jungles when I search jingles. But, I can get jingles in iMovie (I can't seem to find them on garageband)
See the following screenshot from GarageBand - firstly click on Apple Loops in the top right corner, then on Jingles in the listing of items that appear below that. You should now see all the Jingles in the panel at the bottom right of the window.
    Hope this works for you!

  • Mixing photos with Ken Burns effect with 'still' photos

I am just beginning to experiment with iMovie '09. My medium is still photographs and my goal was to create a movie with these photographs, and send them to iDVD to test the quality of the final images.
    I have 3 questions.
    1. I started by using about 10 photos from iPhoto, then adding music and transitions. I used the same 10 slides, same music and transitions to make a second movie, but this time I used the Ken Burns effect on two of the photos. When I moved the movies to iDVD, the first one was fine, but in the second one, the 'jaggies' appeared in the iDVD version. Is it an 'all or none' proposition regarding the Ken Burns effect if I want to avoid images with jagged edges or is there a way to combine moving and still images?
    2. The first time I tried to send the movie to iDVD I chose Share>iDVD. A drop down window appeared and it looked as if a movie had been created but when I opened the media/movies pane in iDVD, a message appeared saying "the project can't be used because it has not been prepared for sharing yet." What was actually happening when I chose Share>iDVD?
    3. I have been reading other posts about sharing from iMovie to iDVD. Am I understanding correctly that I the largest size I can go to is 'medium'? In my experiments, I have been choosing 'large' and they look OK. (I chose 'large' because that was what was modelled in the tutorial.) Would I have trouble when it comes to burning them?

You should be able to combine.
Open iMovie Preferences and put a check mark next to "Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames". This lets you edit more accurately and if there is an extraneous Ken Burns Frame you can see it.
he first time I tried to send the movie to iDVD I chose Share>iDVD. A drop down window appeared >and it looked as if a movie had been created but when I opened the media/movies pane in iDVD, a >message appeared saying "the project can't be used because it has not been prepared for sharing >yet." What was actually happening when I chose Share>iDVD?
Try saving your movie to either iTunes or the Media Browser first. When you send straight to iDVD it is expected DV or AIC or h.264. With photos only, none of these exist.
After sharing to the media browser or iTunes, if Share to iDVD still isn't working, you can open iDVD, find your movie in the Media Browser, and bring it into iDVD from there.
I have been reading other posts about sharing from iMovie to iDVD. Am I understanding correctly >that I the largest size I can go to is 'medium'? Both will work. DVDs are 480i, so if you send in large, iDVD has to downscale. You may want to try it both ways to see which gives you better results.

  • How can I use the green screen with iMovie?

Hey guys! I was wondering how does the green screen effect work with iMovie 11? I need to use green screen in iMovie in school for a project and I am trying to troubleshoot the problem.
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Record a video against a green screen and import it to imovie.
Then place the green screen footage ON TOP of the background you want and a list should come up. Select green screen. Also, before you do any of that make sure that your advanced tools are selected under preferences in imovie.

  • Using external firewire iSight with iMovie 8

I'm trying to use my old external iSight camera that I purchased for my old powerbook with iMovie, but only the internal iSight camera is showing in the drop down menu.
When I plug in my external iSight camera it will make the lens adjusting noise and the light will come up briefly.
Is there any way I can get that external iSight camera to work with iMovie 8?

    You're welcome, adamrod
... My computer is not recognizing the external iSight camera ... I know the iSight works because I tested it on my old G4.
If you mean that TODAY your iSight works with one of your Macs but not the other, the problem is in your newer Mac, its Firewire or Firewire port connection, or the cable you are using with it.
A properly working iSight will be recognized as a Firewire device as shown in this image:
If your test with your old G4 was long ago, your iSight may have failed since last you used it. In addition to the Apple iSight troubleshooting link I posted earlier, you can use the additional suggestions in this link to test the current functionality of your external iSight:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
One of those suggestions will get a faulty external iSight working unless it is beyond repair.
The only app I know to try it with would be iChat and I don't even see anywhere in the preferences where you could change it from built-in iSight to external.
The camera choices bar will show ONLY if more than one working, iChat-compatible, camera is connected. If the choice does not show, iChat is not recognizing more than one working camera.
Different apps use different methods of camera selection.  In iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one (working) compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. You already know that iMovie 7's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one (working) compatible camera connected, iMovie uses the drop-down menu choice in the camera "Preview" window that I mentioned in my previous post to you.
For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation if you need help with selecting which camera the app will use.
When I plug the iSight the light comes on briefly, goes off and then it makes an auto adjusting noise.
This is normal behavior for external iSight.
What does your external iSight do when you plug it in?
The same thing you describe for yours.
Does the light stay on constantly?
Only when the iSight is actually in use. Otherwise, the light goes out on an external iSight that is working correctly but in standby mode.
The light should NOT be illuminated when no apps that can use iSight are running. Likewise, the iSight green lamp should extinguish when iSight is not actually being used by an app. Specific examples:
iChat connected but not in chat: *iSight light OFF*
iChat connected and in video chat: *iSight light ON*
iChat > Video > Video Preview w/iSight shutter open: *iSight light ON*
iMovie open but no capture Preview window open: *iSight light OFF*
iMovie Preview window open (whether capturing or not): *iSight light ON*
Because the light is merely an indicator that iSight is in use rather than any kind of functional necessity, whether the iSight light is on or off has never been of any serious concern to me.
Is there any other app I should try it with?
You can use any you like. There are suggestions in the Apple Troubleshooting link listed earlier, and there are more in this list:

  • Using garageband 09 with imovie 09

    new to imove & garageband
some questions on using garageband 09 with imovie 09...
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail how to use garageband with imove 09 to improve a voice only naration track?
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail each of garage bands effects/audio unit effects on the sound track?
    - is it correct that once you share an imovie to garage band and edit the sound track with garageband you can not "re-share" it back to imovie for video editing?
    - in post production, I am use to doing the following for sound track:
noise reduction, compression/expansion/limiting, equalization, normalize to -1dB.
Some have garage band effects have corresponding names, like compression. But, is there a noise reduction?
    Thanks
    Bob

    This might be helpful: http://comtechlab.iupui.edu/tutorialsfolder/tutorials.html
No URL that explains the effects in depth to my knowledge, maybe one of the books, like Missing Manual or the Apple Certified when it comes out.
Some high level info here: http://www.thegaragedoor.com/index.html
Correct, there is no round trip editing. However, you should be able to import the completed movie back into iMovie as a new event and then bring it into a project.
Not sure there is noise reduction.

  • IChat crashes with OS 10.5.8 on G4 Mac's

I do not know if this is a known issue, but here is what I am struggling with.
    Hardware
    G4 Tower or Cube
    OS
    10.5.8 with 1.5GB or RAM
    *Web Camera*
External iSight camera (FW400) or Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro (USB)
    Issue
iChat is launched. Then, when Video Preview is selected, iChat crashes with a spinning beachball of death.
    Analysis
Both G4 Tower and Cube have no issue with iChat recognizing and working with eiher the external iSight camera or the QuickCam Vision Pro if +OS 10.4.11+ is used.
I am certainly aware that OS 10.5.8 is not officially supported on the G4 Tower or Cube. But, it is really odd that I cannot make the video work in iChat with OS 10.5.8 on either hardware platform.
Any assistance would be appreciated to make iChat work with video along OS 10.5.8 on the G4 Tower or Cube.

    Hi,
I have the G4 tower listed in the specs below.
I am running 10.5.8 and therefore iChat 4.0.8
I don't have either of the cameras you list but have used a DV Converter (Firewire) before and currently have an Added USB 2.0 Cards with a UVC compliant camera from advent connected.
If you open System Profiler (Apple icon Menu > Hold the ALT key and click the first item) and go to Hardware > Firewire, what Firmware version does the iSight show up with ? (1.0.3 is the last/latest)
Is the Logitech device a UVC compliant camera ?
DO you have USB 2.0 ports ?
When you say "Crashes" do you mean you get the spinning Beach ball then it "Unexpectedly Quit" ?
If it did then can you look in your Home Folder/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter and look at the last iChat log.
Can you post that here ?
In 10.4.11 do you have any Add-ons for iChat ?
Did you transfer any of these to the Leopard Update ?
If you used iUSBCam it may need updating for Leopard.
MoreiChatEffects may be causing you an issue.
If there was a Perian, System Preference item, that enables Quicktime to play certain files (AVIs and DivX mainly) it may also need updating.
I would try to open the Video Menu > Video Effects item and check it is selected on the middle "Normal" view selection.
You should be able to do this without using the Preview.
What happens if you go to the iChat Preferences and the Audio/Video Section ?
