IChat - Failure to close

I have recently installed the new OS X V10.5. I was trying my iChat and then went to close it by placing it in the 'trash' and it would not close or shut down. I also tried from the top left hand where it has the name 'iChat" and tried from there. It still would not. I then tried to shut down the whole computer and it would not allow me to.
I was forced to do a 'hard shutdown'.
Anyone want to try and help me.
Thanks
Jim

I have seen several threads with Phone Forwarding listed as pat of the issue (If not the whole issue).
I am not sure that is relevant here.
I have not seen this error myself.
You seemed to have covered most of what any of the regular Posters would have suggested.
There are circumstances where one iChat Screen Name will have issues where another one will not.
AIM periodically clear out what they consider to be Unused Screen Names and release them back for re-registration.
Now this has a knock on effect to the people who might have one of those names in their Buddy List still as they are removed from there as well.
This tends to mean your Buddy List is not accessible for a while.
In the past AIM did this in Early December (pre Christmas) and at 4 monthly intervals after that.
When AIM started doing this it caused chaos as previously names had been "For Life"
The first time they also lost contact with the then @Mac.com data base.
The next December that had issues with all @mac .com names that contained more than 12 character before the @mac bit.
It has been smoother more recently as the early attempts also cleared out the largest amount of "dead" names.
It seems unusual that you are having what looks like a similar issue in Jan (Unless AIM have changed their timings on this).
Do you have another Mac User account on your Mac where you could test the Screen Name you are using ?
Any chance the Mac User account you are using has Parental Controls applied to it ?

  • IChat opens and closes repeatedly

    I've seen this come up in discussions a few times but without answers.
    iChat opens and closes repeated then tells me I've logged in too many times and to try again later. BUT... this only happens on one particular Airport connection. Everywhere else is fine. Is it the wireless router that is the problem... some compatibility issue? Is that the issue for the other people getting this problem too, perhaps?
    Any ideas how to fix this?

    Hi,
    From that (9C7010) I can see that you have done the Time Machine and Airport Update.
    I presume this updates the specs for the Airport Card as well as adjusting the Airport Devices themselves to Apple's version of the latest 802.11n draft spec.
    I would have then said that it was effecting the connection presumably as this is now out of step with the firmware on the Netgear, but you say other Internet features work.
    First I would delete the com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist from Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences
    Then I would see if this Netgear is set to Respond to Internet Pings and has the Block Port Scan and DOS (or SPI) turned Off.
    As test I would see if the N spec can be turned off in the Netgear and use the G only.

  • Ichat opens and closes repeatedly then shows an error

    When I go to log into Ichat, it opens and closes over and over again until finally an error comes up saying that I tried to log in too many times, and to try and log in again later.
    However, after a few minutes, it still does not let me log in.. Please help !

    I looked further into the discussions and found this thread. I tried it and it worked. It might work for you.

  • Upgrade from RH10 to RH11 - cpd, failure to Close, failure to Import PDF Comments

    Hello, am looking for help with a recent conversion of a project that has been upgraded from RH8-9-10 and now trying to go into 11. Apparently when going from 10 to 11, the author had similar issues to what I am having now and had to rebuild the entire project using existing files off the published version. Issues are: cpd error message; project won't Close Project, Close, or Exit (requires Task Manager); and it will not Import Comments from PDF. On our first attempt to upgrade, we experienced more and more lost topics (had an X on them in the TOC) and finally all files were like that. Reverted to 10 at that point. Have tried removing cpd / xpj / double-clicking the hhp (?) and a few other things. Any help appreciated! Thank you.

    Before upgrading, try running Tools > Update DHTML effects in topics just to make sure.
    Make sure all files are writable and that you remove the CPD before trying to upgrade.

  • IChat Failure after 10.5.2 Installs

    Before Leopard I could video iChat over the internet with zero difficulty with my AIM contacts (iMac, MBP, and MB). Post 10.5.2 iChat works locally using a Linksys 54G router connecting to a MBP and MB (both about a year old), but it fails over the internet. No change to platforms or ISP's; no change to routers. The only variable is Leopard with all available updates installed. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what Leopard doesn't do that Tiger did do that would lead to a solution?

    Go to System Preferences > Sharing and make sure Internet Sharing is Off.

  • Ichat "failure to respond"

    I've had an IMac Intel since January and I neve rbeen able to use the IChat Video or Audio. The ISight Cam works fine with yahoo messenger but I have problems with IChat Aim and AOL.
    I have a Westell and Verizon as a ISP. I made the changes to my firewall ports as reccomended on the portforward website. I checked th error log under the connection doctor and I have a long list of error messages that state "Chat ended with error "
    Should I have be using my external IP address when I add the ports in the router?

    Hi Tehuti5404,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
    The current Ports listed on PortFrowrd.com are wrong.
    They should be these

    The Table breaks them down into each Service and lists them as a whole.

  • Re: failure to close websites

    satellite L300 cannot close websites --windows internet explorer not responding

    Hi jgros,
    Are you using newest version of Internet Explorer or maybe the preview version of Internet Explorer 9?
    You should check the Microsoft website for an update and using latest final version of IE.
    But in my opinion I would recommend another Internet browser they are faster and more secure. Im using Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. For me they are best Browsers! :)

  • MacBook Pro iChat no-go

    After 5 months of iChat failure through Powerbook I just purchased top MacBook Pro, and iChat still does not function. I am in Italy, on Fastweb 10mbs fiber. I get a "can't get video from camera" error and my son in USA gets "expecting remote machine to send to: (IP address)" with an IP address that is HIS.
    Any one with any clues?

  • RMI-Server "checks" when Client closes RMI-Connection

    Hi there!
    I hope somebody can help me...
    I'm developing a client/server application where my client calls a remote method and my server starts working (i.e. 5-7 minutes batch processing).
    Is there a way my server "gets informed", when RMI connection is closed (network failure, client closes)? In this situation the server should perform a rollback, delete generated files, etc.
    I don't know if there is thrown a exception inside the server method, which I can catch ....
    Any suggestion is welcome ..
    Best Regards
    Anton

    Thanks a lot, I will have a look at the tutorial.
    Initially my thoughts on this issue were:
    -) The Client-RMI call is made in an own Thread (There are several things to do before job processing can start on the remote machine).
    -) when the RMI call is processed, the thread gets blocked, so doesn't add load to the machine (hope so).
    -) RMI does the "alive-checking", when network connection fails the client can mark the job as failed. The called server should also do some rollback. So I do not have to implements callback-listeners to react on server callbacks
    -) But I'm worried about open connections, running out of socket resources and that there is no way to abort a endless running job.
    This is my first aproach to solve this problem, I would be very glad about any comment ...

  • HELP!!! Constant freezing, Bugged updates, Repair failure, and No Hard disk

    Hi, I have had my iMac for just about a year now. It has never had any major problems up until now. One day, when i was using a downloaded non-Mac application that I had had for a while, my iMac freezes. Only the curser can move now. I pushed the power button putting the computer to sleep, then, waking it up again. All back to normal and I didn't think anything about it.
    A couple of days later, it starst happening again, but with Mac applications too. It to the point to where i had to restart my computer by holing down the power button (aka. "the last resort"). It gets so bad to the point that I cannot use my computer anymore. The only thing I can do when it's frozen is move the curser, nothing else. So I take it to my local Apple Store. Guess what, it works perfectly when I turn it on there! Ha Ha Ha No. But yes it does work which is bad because he cannot fix a working computer. He repairs the permissions on the computer anyway, just to make sure. When I get home I power up my computer and it works aweful. Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier that it takes about 10-25 minutes to get to the login screen! Every time. So now I wait, without a computer for about a month until Christmas. I get the Drive Genius software by Prosoft for Christmas. So I use it to try to fix my iMac. I repaired everything possible to repair. So now the computer is working a lot better, but there are still some things that freeze. Such as, closing a window, or quitting an application, checking my email, and emtying the trash. A few weeks later I was calling an Apple support agent about a different product whitch was accually my fault but he gave me some suggestions to fix my computer. So I did the hardware test like he told me to and it did nothing. I did and archive and install and it worked!. So when you do one, there are like 20 things to update. I updated OS X first, then some other needed updates, when those were done and restarted I had planned on doing all of the security updates. On my second wave, the one right before the security updates, I restared my computer when the finished and then when I came back into the room, the screen was blue and had that little swirly gray loading thing. I left it on that for 6 or 7 hours hoping it would finally go through, but it did not. Back to the archive and install. I performed it once again and decided to change the order of the updates to, OS X, then all of the security ones, then everything else. it worked all of it. But, it eventually started freezing again. This time it was real freezing, the kind where your curser becomes a little "wheel of fortune" thing. BANKRUPT! I figured it was a bugged update because both failures happened close after the updates. It is archive and install time again. So I shut down my computer using "the last resort" while I am busy buying vowels and solving the puzzle. So I put the CD in and start. It took a little too long for the CD to find my hard disc. It made me nervous. I start the install but have to go. When I come bock to my house, the thing says "install failed please restart and try again". So I tried. but it never finds my hard disk. Its gone. Poof! I get the "no startup disk" floder sign on starup. One thing is that my Drive Genius software detects my disk easily. And that concludes my fairytale adventure.
    Thanks and I hope somebody can help,
    Jamey

    Hey, thanks for responding. Well, first of all how do i a PMU? I have connected a logitech L/R click mouse with a scroll wheel, an Apple keyboard with an Apple brand keyboard USB extention cord, an iPod connector cord (no iPod connected), an HP PSC 1200 series all-in-one printer, and some non-Apple speakers. All of the computers in my house are on a airport express wireless internet system. At the Apple store all I had was an Apple mouse, Apple keyboard. Would it make any difference how I plugged these in? I have a battery backup system. Plugged into that are the following: (under battery backup and surge protector) my computer and my printer. (Under just surge protector) another power strip with surge protecctor and isolated outlets. On that are my speakers, my cell phone charger, my neon clock, and my desk light.
    Thanks, I hope this information helps you help me resolve my problem,
    Jamey

  • Why to need close the result set and statement

    why to need close the result set and statement

    It's best to explicitly close every ResultSet, Statement, and Connection in the narrowest scope possible.
    These should be closed in a finally block.
    Since each close() method throws SQLException, each one should be in an individual try/catch block to ensure that a failure to close one won't ruin the chances for all the others.
    You can capture this in one nice utility class, like this:
    package db;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.Map;
    import java.util.LinkedHashMap;
    import java.util.List;
    import org.apache.commons.logging.Log;

  • Ever since i downloaded skype to chat with a friend with a pc my ichat won't open

    ever since I downloaded skype to video chat with a friend with a pc my ichat won't open - suggestions?

    Hi,
    So the DOCK looks like this ?  (Or at least the Lion version of that)
    The Menu Bar Icon looks like this ?
    Ok if the App is open and you click once on the icon  (Speech Bubble with Camera) in the DOCK all that will happen is that any iChat Window will come to the front.
    This of course does need there to be an Open iChat Window.
    Can you access the iChat Menu itself and Preferences from there ?
    In the accounts section does it list any Accounts apart from the Bonjour one ?
    In the Account info tab (If there is more tan one tab) does it say Use this Account and is the check box ticked ?
    If before quitting iChat you close all the Windows including the Buddy List and then Quit iChat it will remember the Window state when you start it up again.
    In fact the Window menu will tell you which Accounts are Logged in and these (if more than one) should match the "Use this Account" ones in the iChat Preferences.
    Using the red button only "Hides" the Buddy List it does not log it out or Quit the app.
    Does the Window menu list any Account  like this pic does ?
    (Example from iChat 4 with the Chax Add on (more Menu items) icons)
    Does the Menu Bar icon (Second pic above) show you any Buddies in the drop down you see ?
    This is my drop down menu for iChat 4 when iChat is Off
    As you can see it says it is Off Line.
    Selecting "Available" does nor launch the app for me either as it does not know which of the 6 Screen Names I usually Login is the one I want to be "Available"
    I can understand the Menu (Drop Down) may have changed in iChat 6.
    Nothing you have added in the last two posts indicates to me that Skype is in any way responsible  (Not that I would normally wnaty to defend it)
    Neither does it point  to anything but a normal functions of iChat if you close it down in a certain way.
    Also check the System Preferences > General Pane in Lion (it is called Appearance in earlier versions)
    This has a new setting that can set for all App the ability to remember which windows were open the next time the app is launched.  (i.e if a graphics app had a pallet open this would be remembered. However if all windows are closed but the app is still running when Quit this "windowless State" would be the one remembered)
    (What is does do for iChat is return the "Remember  Open Chats on Quit" from iChat 4 that got lost in iChat 5)

  • Cannot close Serial port socket on Server 2008, Can on XP

    As per the subject - running the same code using the same hardware, but different OS (Server 2008 Std. NOT XP Pro)will not work!
    It's all very odd... The port opens fine but will not close using SerialPort.close(), thereby causing problems the next time the port is opened (PortInUseException).
    Has anyone here experienced this before? Any suggestions as to where the problem may lie?
    Edited by: wizzkidd on Jan 19, 2010 7:46 AM - More descriptive title

    I have a serial port monitor open on both machines; it shows that the connection is still open (on Server 2008), even after the following is run:
         public void closePort() {
              if (serialPort != null) {
                   serialPort.close();
                   Console.print("Closed port: "       + "(" + commPort + ")");
              else {
                   Console.print("Port is still open: " + "(" + commPort + ")");
         }However, on XP, the connection is closed properly.
    Upon failure to close the port, the code has already been run, however, no exception is thrown.

  • Major problems with isight/ichat!!!

    i! Can anybody help me please??
    I'm ichat/isight user for more than two years now. I had all sorts of malfunctions but what's happening now's never been there before AND can't be fixed by restarting, unplugging, restarting whole system etc.
    OK, this is what's happened:
    -> unplugged isight from my powermac (g5) to use on powerbook G4 (as I've done succesfully before). on G4 I got ichat running after plugging in isight, then clicked "camera" symbol to check if it runs properly. The camera gave me one short glance and then froze and after that ichat completely hung up. I've shut it down (applealtesc) -> didn't show as shut (little black arrow underneath programm-sign). I had to put the G4 on standby and then log in again before the programme would shut down. I've done it twice and after the second time my G4 doesn't come back anymore at all.... :((( It only shows the grey apple and the spinning wheel (grey dots) for ages! I've taken isight away and everything (mightymouse) but still NO CHANGE!!! No matter how long I wait - My whole system never comes back!!! BUT - I'm very lucky to have my power Mac with ichat running on it properly --- as I thought.... Now, THIS REALLY KILLS ME!!! I plugged camera in again, started ichat on G5... same sh** like on G4! Ichat won't close down anymore no matter what I do!!!I've done complete restart of system... NO CHANGE!!! What have I done wrong???? Can anybody help me - please???

    Hi Ursula,
    Shut down the PowerBook
    Use a paperclip to open the DVD/CD drive.
    Put your Install disk in the tray an partially close the tray.
    Push the tray home as you press the start up button then hold the C key down until it is clear it is starting from the CD/DVD
    When the word Installer is the Open Application in the menu bar find the Disk Utility from the menu bar items and the Repair Permissions.
    This may be all you have to do.
    Changing the Start-up disk back the the main Hard Drive can also be done without actually running the Installer.

  • IChat starts but nothing else happens, no windows just greyed out menus

    iChat starts but nothing else happens, no windows just greyed out menus
    Dunno what it is, i would live it on all night and the next morning i see beach balls and have to force quit it, then when i start it nothing happens, i just see the menus on top, i am forced to restart the computer just to get it running again.
    Any advise appreciated.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    iChat does not close when you use the red button to close windows as some other apps do.
    This means iChat can be running but not showing any windows (including any Buddy Lists).
    If you set up iChat it will have at least one Buddy List.
    Open iChat and go to the Window menu
    In here you will see any Buddy List that is Logged in.
    Selecting that item or using the keystrokes next to it will show you the Buddy List.
    In Tiger/iChat 3 Apple Key and 1 would open the AIM Buddy List, Apple + 2 the Bonjour List (If active) and Apple + 3 any Jabber Buddy list.
    As Leopard allows you to log several Screen names in to AIM or Jabber the list can be as mixed up as you want (or Created)
    The Order can be changed in iChat menu > Preference > Accounts by dragging the list into the order you want.
    My Window menu
    The Accounts Prefs List
    See more here
    I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.
