IChat File Transfer - yikes.

I'm looking for something that will allow me to transfer files over ip mac to mac. iChat isn't cutting it when transferring rather large files.. such as an episode of south park.
Anyone have any suggestions?

transfer files over ip mac to mac.
You might want to take a look at iVisit
Mac/PC, Multi-party (up to 16) multi-way (all live) video, audio, chat, messaging, file transfer, desktop sharing and more ...
It works on a wide range of hardware and has lower bandwidth/CPU requirements than iChat.

  • IChat File Transfer/Video Chat won't work... :(

    Hi Everyone,
I am trying to get ichat to allow file transfers/video chatting on my Mac, I have a feeling that the setup through the routers that we have are not allowing it to function as it is constantly giving me errors. My set up is a Cable Modem hooked into a Netgear WGR614 v6 and then an ethernet wire running from that router to a Linksys WRT54G v8. I have the WRT54G set up with the following settings:
    IP: 192.168.1.136
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway 192.168.1.1
Static DNS 1 and 2: Are my IP's DNS servers
    Static DNS 3 is blank
Local IP address is .199 with a subnet of 255.255.255.128
I have DHCP enabled starting at .200 with 30 users
My computer is also set up statically at port .233.
The Netgear WGR614 v6 is set up with the following settings:
    Get IP/DNS dynamically from ISP
DHCP Range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.51. Router is on a subnet of 255.255.255.0 the linksys is set up statically to the Netgear
SO, this brings me to my issue, I am trying to get ichat file transfer/video to work, I have followed the instructions for setting up portforwarding from portforward.com for ichat on both the netgear and the linksys. On the linksys, i set the IP address to forward to as my computers (.233)
On the netgear, i set the ip address to forward to as 192.168.1.136 (the static IP of the linksys).
Anyway, I am hoping someone can point out what I am doing wrong as I am still getting this error: An AIM error has occurred. Unable to talk directly to your buddy. I am also getting this error: An AIM service error occurred. The server message was: Serv:RequestTimeout.
My OS X firewall is off.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!

    Hi,
I am not sure I have understood your Networking here.
You say the Netgear is getting an IP (Via DHCP) from the ISP.
You go onto say it is at 192.168.1.1
It issues IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.51 and the Linksys has an IP outside this range at 192.168.1.136
    Your computer is at 192.168.1.233
As both devices are using the 192.168.1.xxx group and doing DHCP (even with restricted groups) how does the computer know which one to connect to ?
You should be able to change the group that each device is using for it's own network (I would suggest the Netgear)
You should also turn Off DHCP (to the LAN) in the Netgear so it's own network (subnet) only goes as far as the Linksys.
Similarly in the Linksys make sure DHCP is Off or change the Mac to use Manually (Static) with DHCP.
Both devices can do UPnP found in the Administration tab in the Linksys and the WAN page of the Netgear.
Turn Off/disable all Port Forwarding in both devices.
It may also pay to copy across the Linksys and Computer the DNS server IPs from the Netgear.

  • IChat File Transfer port issue (can't listen to port 5190 and 7777)

    Greentings ladies and gentlemen,
I need help opening port 5190 and 7777 for ichat server file transfers. As for now, my situation can be described as below:
(1)I have a ichat server in a mac mini(2010, newest model as for today) running a fully updated version of MACOSX SERVER 10.6 inside a lab in my university.
(2)As for the ichat server itself, text, voice, video between 2 or more persons are all working great. As for clients the latest version of ichat and pidgin(text only) are being used. The only problem is the lack of file transfer between ichat clients.
(3)The server is behind a router (YAMAHA RTX 1200). I am 100% sure that the router is correctly configured to allow packets in and out of the port 5190 and 7777, among the other necessary ports. All the other ports are open and working correctly. I also manually disabled the firewall of a windows7 laptop and tested packet transfers on both ports and both worked fine.
(4)As I said before, the server is inside my university lab. I made sure that all ports between 1023~65535 are open in the univesity gateway/backbone network.
Bellow are firewall(IPFW) settings before flushing (tried configuring using both GUI and CUI, and both returned the same results)

As you can see my firewall settings are not being reflected on the actual server firewall.
Is there any way I could just force the server into listening the port?
If necessary I can post screenshots of every ichat server/firewall configuration tab from the Server Admin GUI.
Thanks in advance for any help/support.

First off, realize there is no association between your firewall rules and netstat.
Just because your firewall is letting traffic in that does not mean it will appear in your netstat.
netstat -a will show you a list of ports that are in use - i.e. there is some process listening to (or writing to) that port. That is independent of whether the firewall permits the traffic (e.g. the firewall could well allow traffic in on 5190, but unless there's a process listening to 5190 you won't see it in the netstat).
Secondly, IIRC iChat file transfers are client-to-client therefore it might not be your server, or your server's firewall or your server's network that's the issue - the client will need to have a firewall configured to allow incoming traffic from other iChat clients.
Does that help shed some light on things? (it isn't clear whether your post is referring to the server or the client side of things).

  • IChat file transfer speed

I am transferring a 2.88 gig file using iChat. Is there a way to increase the transfer rate? The longer the file goes through the transfer process, the longer the estimated completion time gets! Now it's up to 345 minutes and steadily rising even though the file is transferring. There has to be a quicker way to move files this large. Help!

    You need something like YouSendIt
Tried a test a while back with a 400mb file in iChat and it took over 4 hours.

  • Ichat file transfer to Gtalk user

Why am i not able to transfer files while using Ichat to a friend who is using the gtalk program?

    Umm,
I would have said the link to someone using the Web based option as the web based option is likely to use the Web Browsing port (80) and I have tried this and it does not work.
Now this page leads to a Download that Windows or Intel Macs can install.
For Macs it is a web Browser Plug-in
I am not sure if this is really what the GoogleTalk option is for PCs
If I log on to the Google Web Mail Page it says my PPC Mac con not Video.
(it makes no mention of Sending Files)
This list of FAQs does not mention File Sending.

  • IChat file transfer

Every time I try to transfer files with a friend on iChat, it freezes my computer, exits out of iChat, and often needs to be rebooted.
If I send a file, it functions normally. Also, this freezing only happens with certain types of file transfers--when I have to actually download the pic / file. Sometimes the picture appears in the iChat window. Then it normally doesn't freeze. However, when I'm prompted to click the arrow thing and download the file, it always freezes.
    Any suggestions?

It could be in the naming convention used
Certain characters like the Slash / would regarded and a file path name. There would be others that PC systems may use such as a Colon :
Too many dots . such as picture1.me.jpg
Or even two types of file listed as .jpg.png or similar.
Other things that can effect it is if the Buddy is dropping the pic file on your Name in the Buddy list (tends to get sent as a file) or dropping in the text sending field when it is sent as a Pic in the chat.
It would be worth finding out if he is having trouble dropping them into the Chat and resorting to sending that as a File ?
I once had someone who claimed that could crash my iChat and did so in a similar way.
Turned out he had a faulty router in the end (i.e. His end not mine even though my iChat Crashed)

  • File Transfer Error Between Ichat 2.1 and Ichat 3

I am trying to send my brother some files. He has an Ibook G4 and so do I. He is running Ichat 3 on Tiger and I am running Ichat 2.1. Both of us are using a wireless connection through our own personal cable modems. He can send me files and I can accept them and get them without problems. Every time I try to send him a file, before it starts, we get an error 'File Transfer Error' file name not transferred.
He says he has no problems receiving files from other buddies of all different types of operating systems.
I don't recall having any problems sending or receiving from any of my other buddies either.
Is this just an OS X.3 vs OS X.4 issue? Or is there something weird with my Ibook?
Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks,
    -Chris

    Hi cjmagnuss,
Can your brother send files to other people.
It sounds like it might be his end.
File Transfers happen on Port 5190 on the UDP protocol.
Some modems and router have problems if they have to list Protocols when Port Forwading.
Is this the case for him ?

  • How to Measure file transfer speed in iChat

hi guys, is there anyway to measure the file transfer rate ,while sending o receiving a specific file
    in iChat?

Actually I should say that it's not a good solution to stop all other applications to measure the network
traffic for one application, there is another problem cause even no file is during transfer the application sends and receives packets from internet and this way is not accurate to measure .

  • IChat AV 4 File Transfer is broken

Whenever someone sends me a file transfer, a message pops up that you can either press, "Save" or "Cancel". Of course I press save and my file transfers window comes up. It says "Size - Calculating" then always a few seconds later it says, "No response from (whoever sent me the file). They never canceled it or anything. And they get a message saying that I canceled the transfer. But I can send a file and it works fine. This is really bugging me.
Why does this happen? I really would like for my transfers to work!!!
    What can I do???
    Thanks

    Hi,
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
    1) Open up iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings
Log out of your AIM or @mac screen name and then change the port from 5190 to 443 and log back in again.
    2) Check that whatever method you are using to open ports in your modem or router allows Port 5190 on UDP

  • IChat have file transfer manager?

Does iChat in Leopard AND Tiger have a file transfer manager in case file transfer gets interrupted? Thanks

I do believe this is possible. As long as you don't move the file or anything like that, it should continue where it left off. The person sending the file has to send it again, and the person on the other end must accept it. It won't start automatically (unless you somehow tell iChat to auto accept files).

  • File Transfer? Faster - iChat?

My daughter is away a college. I would like to send her files that are rips of DVD (350 Mb) she owns when she requests them. Currently we sent via file transfer in iChat. As you can imagine it takes FOREVER!
Is there a faster way? Even if it doesn't include iChat.

I spent 8 hours trying, Yummy, DynDNS, Pure-FTPd, none would work... I tried transferbigfiles.com, it would send small test files but wouldn't do the 700+Mb ones...
I was about to give up and one last Goggle search gave me this little nugget: In Mac OS X, how do I access my computer's disks from another Macintosh? @ http://kb.iu.edu/data/angb.html
Within a couple of minutes I had it working. I didn't need any outside software!!!
Leave it to Apple to give me everything I needed and I didn't even realize it!
Don't make it harder that it has to be....

  • Ichat 4 + Google Talk + file transfer

    Hi!
I'm trying to send files from iChat to iChat both with GoogleTalk
    accounts without success.
The file transfer window displays that it is preparing but this goes
on forever. At the receiver the file transfer windows says
    calculating.
Both are using 10.5.2 with an up to date iChat. Firewall is off.
ScreenSharing and Audio/Video is working fine.
I tested it with .Mac accounts and there file transfering is working
    without any problems.
Thanks for any hint to solve this problem. It is really bothering me.
    Cheers,
    Stefan

I've tested this between my Google Talk account and my Jabber account. I used iChat on my Mac Mini to connect to iChat on my MacBook. Both are running 10.5.2. I found that for Jabber file transfers there are two phases. In phase 1 the Chat clients negotiate the file transfer parameters using the server as an intermediary. In phase 2 the receiver uses TCP to connect to the port from phase 1. If the connection is successful the file transfer begins. If it fails the sender can offer another IP address/port for transfer and the receiver can try again. This goes on until the sender has exhausted his list of available IP addresses and ports.
Problems with file transfer will usually happen at phase 1. At the end of phase 1 the Chat client that wishes to send the file sends a message that details the IP address and port for the receiver. The receiver should try to connect to this IP address and port and get the file. This will fail if there is either a NAT or a Firewall between the receiver and the sender. A NAT botches the transfer because iChat doesn't do anything to try to figure out what it's real address is. A firewall botches the transfer by discarding the inbound TCP SYN packets that initiate the communication between sender and receiver. This is made worse by the fact that as sender iChat doesn't use the same TCP port for transfer all the time.
In the end file transfer will work for two chat clients that can deliver packets between each other. Two people on the same LAN or on two seperate addresses that are neither NATed nor Firewalled. I've also got this going for people who have a VPN. iChat doesn't help you here. In fact it makes things worse by not choosing a constant port which means that arranging for transfer in your firewall policy is problematic. Ideally a chat client like Psi can be made to work. Psi allows the user to specify both the port and IP address specified in transfer.

  • Port 548 Shutting Down File Transfer Over Network

OK, nobody laugh, but I am trying to transfer some old work files from an ancient PowerBook 3400 (including many on Zip disks) running OS 8.1 to one of our newer machines so we can look through them at our leisure later and save those of interest.
On the PowerBook, I have successfully connected to both of the new machines (see below) via Chooser and started to copy files to those machines. In the middle of the copy, after a few minutes, I get the following message: 192.168.1.xx:548 "The file server connection has closed down". 192.168.1.xx is the LAN IP address of the receiving machine. Personal File Sharing is allowed, and file permissions have been given to Others in the receiving folder. Do I need to do authorize something on Port 548 to allow the transfer?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Bob

    Hi Ralph
I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!
