IChat freezes for 10 seconds whenever I plug in headphones...

Does anyone else have this issue? I have the late '08 aluminum unibody with 10.6, iChat 5.0...
Any advice on this would be great.

Hi,
iChat is set to use the Mic listed in the System Preferences > Sound > Input tab
It is normally pre-set as there is only one choice on most computers to the item Listed in System Preferences > Sound > Output.
Depending if you have Built in Speaker(s) as that default choice (And no drop down in iChat for Output) AND the action of sticking in Headphones cuts the Speaker Output - then the System will Pause and check the new device plugged in before allowing apps to access it.
I would stick it in first.

  • Ichat freezes for 5 seconds

While on ichat, video will freeze for 5 seconds and come back, then continues to freeze for 5 seconds intermittently during the video chat. Happens whenever I am on iChat, regardless of who I am chatting with. Party on the other end does not see any indication that this is happening.

    Hi,
    You don't need iChat.
It should not be on there at all.
If the iCon in the DOCK looks like this then it is linked to iChat 4.
You should be able to Right/Control click that and get it to "Show in Finder"

  • Equium M70-339: Playing video display freezes for second every 10sec

When I play a video/dvd etc the display sticks/freezes for a split second every 10 seconds or so. This happens when I play something online or from one of my own DVDs/CDs. It does it on all software (Windows Media, Real Player etc).
It seems to be a driver problem(?) but I can't be sure.
It is certainly very annoying! .. and seems to be getting more noticeable. Would appreciate any help as I can't find anything else on the web which explains why this happens.
    thanks
    Jim

The newly downloaded driver worked for a short time (I'm certain I have the correct one as it actually had a link on my PC to download the latest version) but is now back to the very annoying 'stick' every 10 seconds or so. I'm not sure what else I can do to fix this - it's very frustrating as it ruins enjoyment of videos, dvds and also watching internet tv, they all do the same. Any ideas?

  • ITunes 11.3 freezes on verifying whenever I plug in my iPod

I have a brand Windows based laptop that I just updated to iTunes 11.3. 11.3 freezes constantly. It takes 5 minutes to open. When it's updating podcasts it freezes and I can't do anything else on it. Whenever I connect my iPod it won't sync, it just freezes and says "Verifying iPod". I haven't had this problem with any previous version of iTunes. What's going on?

  • I have an iPad 2 and all of a sudden I have no sound in game apps. I have usual volume in videos and YouTube, I do get volume for games if I plug in headphones. I have switched to screen lock off and on again and I have also done a reset twice.....help :)

I have an ipad2 and all of a sudden I have stopped getting sound in my game apps. I get normal sound on YouTube and I player and downloaded DVDs. If I plug headphones in then I can get sounds for the games. I have switched the lock screen button off and on again and done a reset twice, can anyone help me with this?

Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Whenever I plug my headphones into my macbook pro, only the right earphones works. there's not a fault with the headphones as i have tried numerous pairs and the laptop it's self plays music perfectly without the headphones...any ideas?

    any help would be appreciated.

Go in to system preferences-sound and make sure that your audio when your headphones are plugged in isn't panned to one side.

  • Sound stops working, 3 seconds after plugging in headphones

I have a strange issue on my phone where the sound stops working after about 3 seconds (consistently), after plugging in headphones.
I have the latest software update and I don't have any special sound modifying apps. No software I've installed ruined this, it has worked fine before, until about two weeks ago. I've also dust-cleaned the headphone jack.
Without headphones, the sound works great.
Here's an example of what happens
    1. I start a video on YouTube / play a song / start a call with someone / start a game
    2. The sound works well, nothing is strange at all
    3. I plug in my headphones
    4. The sound now works in the headphones
    5. About 3 seconds later, the sound stops working completely, in all the cases above
    6. The sound never returns, until I unplug my headphones
I'm clueless as to what could be causing this. Does anyone have any idea?

I've tried that, but it doesn't work
It seems like a software/firmware issue, since the 3 seconds of working is 100% the same every time

  • When I plug my headphones into the headphone/optical out jack programs hang

I have an iMac 20 inch LCD. On the back their is a jack with a picture of headphones, but it is also labeled as "optical out". I plug my headphones in and they work. Great. That is not my problem today.
My problem is that whenever I plug the headphones in or unplug them, iTunes (and other apps using audio) hangs and when I try to adjust the volume with the keyboard buttons nothing happens for 15 seconds or more and then the volume changes, not that anything is able to play. If I wait for a minute or so then all my applications start working fine again and I am able to hear my music and adjust the volume.
What in the world is going on?
    1.8 Ghz G5 1.25GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thank you. That is good information.
Does this mean that there is nothing I can do about the delay? When I think of a delay, I think of maybe 10 seconds. I am having to wait for a minute or more for my audio to switch. While I wait, I have no audio and any audio program hangs. Is there a setting I can change? It seems rather ridiculous that I have to wait so long just to switch from internal speakers to headphones.
It is like this on other Mac machines? Or it is just my iMac? I hate to compare Mac to Windows, but on Windows or Linux computers the switch is instantaneous.

  • Whenever a new window (or even Firefox program windows like Add-ons, Bookmarks, Settings, etc) is opened, Firefox freezes for 30+ seconds before opening it.

I have reset Firefox, then reinstalled, removed all of the extensions and plugins, uninstalled and reinstalled Flashplayer, updated Java, etc. I have also created new profiles, which have the same problem.
The problem does not appear in Safe Mode, which is odd because I have disabled all of the built-in extensions and have run the program in regular mode, and the problem still occurs. Right now I am using no extensions, no plugins, and no themes, and Firefox still freezes for a short period of time whenever I try to open a new window.
This problem does not happen in IE or Chrome. I have not installed any programs recently; the problem started happening randomly.

    Hi,
[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode] also disables the themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. and hardware acceleration - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u Advanced] > '''General''' > '''Use hardware acceleration when available'''. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if a theme, or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart - a quick way to restart Firefox is to press [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/GCLI '''Shift''' + '''F2'''], type '''restart''' and '''Enter'''.

Thanks for you post, I was under the impression that one of the new macbook pro's comes with 16GB RAM out of the box.
I'll try your solution although I feel like is rather utilise the RAM I've paid for.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/10462096123 Suggested that it's possibly the new memory compression causing the issues. This seems to fit, because I'm a game developer I tend to have quite a lot of memory intensive applications running.
Will report back if I find a solution, if there are any more suggestions I'm all ears.

Can be due to the last two? How can I fix it?

+1 for HDD.  Recommend you use smartmontools to understand if errors have been thrown.  Here is an example of errors on one of my machines:
    # smartctl --all /dev/sda
    Error 442 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 24196 hours (1008 days + 4 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was doing SMART Offline or Self-test.
After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
    40 51 00 c3 8d 75 e1 Error: UNC at LBA = 0x01758dc3 = 24481219
Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:
CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name
    c8 00 08 c0 8d 75 01 00 01:10:53.771 READ DMA

    c8 00 08 b8 8d 75 01 00 01:10:53.769 READ DMA
Smartctl can do short test and if completes without errors, try a long test.  Still no errors?  Good.  You can look around for bad sectors on each partition `e2fsck -cckx /dev/sdXX`
EDIT:  ...usually dmesg will show you when bad things are happening with your filesystem and bad blocks.  I recently had to recover a system that suffered this fate and the dmesg output was rich with these errors.
    % sudo e2fsck -cckv LABEL=archlive

Long story short, I had to reinstall to another partition despite locking out these badblocks.  I do not think this is your problem as I stated above.  See what smartlctl says on the short and long tests.
