Ichat frozen on Lion

Ever since I updated to Lion my iChat will not work. I've force quit the app, went into the activity monitor, restarted my macbook countless times, and shut it down and yet it continues to freeze. can anyone help me out? thank you =]

Hi,
I would check any AIM Login is not set to not allow Multiple Logins.
I would check both computers have the same info in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab
Check the System Preferences > Security > Firewall is allowing iChat
(in Snow Leopard this was FIrewall On then Advanced Button and Allow Signed Apps and adding iChat to the List - I don't imagine Lion is much different.)
If this is Jabber does it allow Multiple Logins ?
This will be at the server end and you may need a thrid party app like Psi to check.
Most Jabber servers do but apps and connections methods are supposed to be arrange in Priority.
This would mean for Instance your phone and Work computer might have higher priorities than the home computer so that when they are all logged in the highest takes the lead.
iChat's Priority is set (or at least in iChat 3,  4 and 5) and cannot be adjusted.
It is in fact the same priority as when you use a Google ID and login to weither iGoogle or the GMail Web Page to chat.
It does not exactly knock iChat (or the web page) Off line but does more any chat to the last login.
In Lion your whole personal Library is hidden (Presumably to stop people getting mixed up with the system Side ones)
Go to the Finder
Go to the Go Menu > Go to Folder option
Type in ~/Library/Prefereneces (the tilde ~ means Home Folder)
Find the com.apple.ichat.(Service type).plist and delete it.
Restart iChat
This will force it to refresh the Login (It calls back the account info from the Keychain)

  • I am having problems with iChat after installing Lion, can anyone help?

I installed Lion this week after I installed everything seemed to be working great. However, if I open iChat and then log in and log out it will not let me log back into iChat

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
    Log back in again.

  • Is there a problem with iChat on Mountain Lion

I usually use iChat to spk with my son in CO but last Saturday (27/09) we both had problems and he suggested support had been withdrawn for Mountain Lion.
    Is this true?

  • HT2515 Does anyone else have ichat problems in Lion?

When I right-click the ichat icon in my dock, I see a list of recent chats. The problem is, these aren't the most recent chats, they're chats from a year ago. No matter how many new chats I have, the same list of chats remain in my recent chat list. I can't delete them. Help!

    Hi,
Actually I have not looked at Recent List in other apps.
A quick check of Keynote and Dreamweaver does seem to only show those pre Lion Install.
(Both of which I have used since I installed Lion).
I don't have an answer right now.
It is late where I am and I will sleep on this.

  • What happened to iChat in mountain lion?

Anyone know where ichat went? I just upgraded and there is no ichat

    HI,
In Messages Menu > Preferences chose the Accounts icon
In the list on the left all your iChat type accounts (Screen Names and IDs) should be listed below the iMessages one.
Click on each in turn and check the "Enable this Account" box is ticked
(You can also check the Messages Menu > Accounts to see which accounts are logged in)
From there the setting in the General Settings will either have them in one List (Shown by using CMD + 1 keys together) as as separate Buddy lists revealed by using CMD and a number (1 though however many accounts there are) as seen in the Window Menu.
    I have 8 at present
    Uploaded with Skitch!
There are two ways to start an "iChat" type Video Chat
    1) The same way you did in iChat by:-
         a) Clicking on a Green Video icon in the Buddy List
         b) Clicking on a  Buddy to highlight and using the icons at the bottom of the Buddy list
         c) Clicking on a Buddy to highlight and then using the Buddies menu > Invite to Video Chat
         d) Right Clicking on a Buddy and and using the menu that pops up
    2) Choosing a Buddy from Buddies in the Blue Plus Icon in the Messages window (rather than Contacts for iMessages) then using the Video icon that replaces the Blue + icon.
Screen Sharing tends to need the Buddy List to be showing or Converting a Video chat as you might of done before.

  • I can't start an audio or video in ichat 6 on Lion

I chat used to work for me.  Now I can't start up audio or video chats.
The error message I get is
"iChat can’t start the audio chat."
"Your computer is busy in another chat."
    I have tried the following
    restart ichat
    reinstall ichat
    remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat*
I am using gtalk as my account.
    Any help would be awesome

    Hi,
In Snow Leopard iChat and Face Time could be open at the same time and in fact use the camera (and or mic) at the same time.
I am not sure this is possible in Lion so I would launch Face Time and check that it is Off in the Preferences.
Although deleting all the com.apple.ichat  .plists is excessive it should have closed any Open Chat (or what it thought was open) when you restarted.  (Although you don't say you have restarted iChat since deleting them)
However there is one setting that may have upset this.
In System Preference > General Pane (Used to be the Appearance pane) is a check box to Cause any Open window on Quit to be reopened on any app launch.
If any window is Minimised to the DOCK that is where it is put back.  (If it is trying to reconnect an audio or Video Chat this may be an Invite window)
As iChat can do Video and Audio Chats Peer-to-Peer it is pointless deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist or the Jabber one or in fact the Yahoo one as once a chat is started you can log out of the relevant Buddy List (Make that Account Off Line).
It is possible that this a a new style Message in Lion to Say "Your Camera/Mic is in use in another application"
As Reinstalling (Hopefully iChat 6) and deleting all the .plist  and then restarting should have given you a clean slate, as it were, it is difficult to see what the issue could be or what to suggest next.

  • Screen sharing from iChat with Mountain Lion

I have not upgraded yet. I want to, but I am concerned that I will no longer have the ability to screen shard with my parents out of state.
I utilize iChat to control my parents computer, they live out of state and are not too computer savvy, this has been a life saver for me. Does Mountain Lion have a feature like this or is it gone with iChat? Is there a video chat option, or am I stuck with facetime???

    Hi,
    Yes.
You have to use the same iChat ID as you do now.  (AIM or Jabber based)
You have to (it's just easier) have the Buddy lists on View (by default they are not)
Yahoo was added for iChat 6 and is in Messages but does not do A/V chats
iMessage (the new Apple Services between Apple iOS devices and Macs with Mountain Lion) is also Text only.
You have to be able to do A/V Chats.
Speed-wise over the Internet this has to at least 128kbps (the same as a Video Chat on a 1-1 basis)
Another way to view this is that Messages is iChat with the iMessages ability shoehorned in and with a main interface change.
When you first start up Messages it tends to push you to enter an Apple ID to "register it" for the iMessage service.
If you migrate an older OS's User Account to the computer the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars (New Preference Pane) picks up on email and other IDs which tends to mean they get added to Messages for you.
You can of course add Screen Names and IDs using the + Button in Messages menu > Preferences Accounts like you do in iChat.
This tends to mean the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts looks very familiar
The Window Menu can look a little different.
CMD + 0 brings up the Messages main window (A Chat Window that does tabbed Chats and an Interface all rolled into one)
Once you have other non iMessages Accounts then CMD + 1 brings up Buddies (A combined Buddy List). It is not listed until they are logged in.
They can be unlinked in the General Section of the Preferences at the "Gather all Accounts into one List" line.
Your "desktop" can then look like iChat used to:-

  • Reinstall ichat after mountain lion

I would like to know if anyone has been able to reinstall iChat after upgrading to mountain lion?   There are lots of features in iChat that iMessage just doesn't have and I would like to keep using them.

    Geoff,
Some people have been saying some misinformation to you, maybe because they're not fully reading or comprehending what you are saying.
YES! iMessages will use FaceTime if you click the video button in the messages area.
iMessages only can: FaceTime, Text, file share.
iMessages does not use the features that are normally attributed with iChat or Instant Messaging in general.
For those features, you will need to log into Gtalk, AIM, Jabber, Yahoo!, or Bonjour.
once you sign into those, you will have access to a buddy list, status messages, Screen sharing, 3 way Video Chat (with the fun little animations and effects from photobooth), and 3 way audio chat.
If you connect with Facebook, sadly, it does not support these features, even if your other friend is using Messages as well.
In a nut shell, Yes, iMessages uses Facetime to video chat, and is not associated with a buddy list or Video Chat through Messages.
Messages ADDS the iMessages client to OSX (this is a huge get for anyone with an iOS device). HOWEVER! Messages can still be used like an instant messaging client as long as you sign into an instant messaging client that will support the features you want.
In no way does the added feature to have iMessages in Messages hinder the ability to sign into AIM with your Apple ID and use it like you used to in iChat. The only way you could use your apple id in ichat was through aim. Now you have the ADDED benefit of using iMessages to sync with your's and your friend's iOS device.

Is there a way to "split off" the Bonjour window in iChat Lion? It would be nice to have a separate Bonjour buddy window similar to the way it was before Lion.

  • IChat 6 Mac Lion Group Text Chat Problem

We are running Lion server and iChat video and audio can handle group chat with no problems. We can group text chat if we creat a room first.
But, if you select multiple users in iChat and then press the "A" button, it appears to send a text to the participants, but they never see the text chat.
This worked fine before Lion; and as mentioned, there is no AIM or Googletalk involved (although we do use google apps for our email, etc). We are running the Lion Server iChat with no Federation enabled, so really it should just work.
It seemed to work in Snow Leopard fine. Has anyone else seen this? How is iChat group text chat working for you if you are hosting the iChat server as we are?
    Thank you in advance,
    Bob

  • Safari 5.1 frozen since Lion installed - any workarounds or updates known?

Today I installed Lion over what seemed to me a pretty updated and well working Snow Leopard environment.
Some software did not work, e.g. I could not launch a Cisco web based Meeting Center.
Then I tried to start Safari and it did not work at all - starting-up and freezing after attempting to load the starting page.
Other browsers like Chrome and Firefox are working well, Chrome incredibly fast.
As I am used to work with Safari I would like it to work.
I cannot understand that an Apple Software would NOT work with Lion.
My equipment is a MacBookPro 4GB RAM and 500GB HD.
Your help will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Carolyn,
Thanks for the great advice. I've been with Mac for about 25+ years. I had a pretty good idea how to systematically problem shoot this. But, I did go step-by-step thru the instructions with "Safari: Unsupported ..." and then I followed each of your recommendations.
The problem still pursists. I am quite stumped by this. It is not happening on any of my other machines with the Lion upgrade.
Here is an image of what I am trying to describe.
    Thanks for your help.

    2. if that wont fix it then is there any other way i can fix this

    Hi,
The Home Library is now Invisible/Hidden.
Use th Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and Type in ~/Library/Preferences
You should now be able to find the .plist (and there are now .lockfiles as well)

This repeats over and over, quite frequently. Any good jabberd gurus know where I should look? I checked out the router.xml but nothing stood out as obvious.

Had a similar thing just now with Mountain Lion (after much trouble post the Server 2.2 update) where the hash in these files eg
    /Library/Server/Messages/Config/jabberd/c2s.xml
            <!-- Username/password to authenticate as -->
            <user>jabberd</user>
            <!-- default: jabberd -->
            <pass>HASHED_SECRET</pass>
    /Library/Server/Messages/Config/jabberd/router.xml
            <secret>HASHED_SECRET</secret>
and others in that folder all matched, but they mismatched with info in these plists…
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print secret" /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Proxy65.plist
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print password" /Library/Server/Messages/Config/Rooms.plist
    set those with eg
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Set secret HASHED_SECRET' /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Proxy65.plist
(use single quotes so the various hash characters like * and ! etc work)
After that and an off/on of messages, the syslog improved and after a reboot went totally stable (wrt jabber anyway!)
