Ichat general error connecting

Hi all,
iChat worked great after Leopard install. I was able to do the screen sharing (weird, in a neat sort of way) and things worked fine.
Then... a few days later, iChat and Mail were extremely sluggish;
and now, ichat refuses to connect at all, saying there's a 'general error'. What does this mean?
I used the macbook pro with an airport, which is connected to our satellite box. I tried to connect the MBP straight to the satellite--it worked for a bit; now it won't even connect using the straight connect to the satellite. Mail is only working about 50% of the time.
Everything works great at school.
Also, as a side, what is a PubSubAgent? Whatever that is, it keeps crashing when I plug directly into the satellite box.
Thanks all!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Congratulations. You are only the second person I have seen post who has reported a successful iChat over satellite.
What happens with most modems for satellite is that when sending or getting data they start slowly and speed up to the speed your provider says they will work at.
This means when you do a speed test it is long enough to read the "Full Speed"
However iChat can start sending data faster than the modem can initially cope with and the Chat never makes a full connection.
Hopefully you have the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming setting at 1.5Mbps ?
For you iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit may play a part.
Try 500kbps or even 200kbps
I don't know about PubSubAgent It may pay to ask about that in the Leopard general use folder/forum (Or Installation)
Form your post it does sound like your modem is fast enough and something on the Mac is slowing things.
Have you tried Repair Permissions in Disk Utility ?
Or Starting Up the computer not connected to the Internet ?

    ichat can't connect to my AIM account, gives me the error "Cannot log in to AIM. General error. Try again." Please help!

    HI,
    Your specs say OS X 10.6.8 which would be iChat 5.x.x in Snow Leopard.
    This version by default tries to login in to the AIM server called login.oscar.aol.com on port 5190 using the TCP protocol.
    An internet connection is made up of 65535 of these so called ports (more like TV stations)
    Most routers have ports up to port 1024 which means some of the iChat Login Ports are above this.
    Two ways to Solve this.
    1) Change the Login port iChat uses
    2) Change the way the router opens ports.
    For 1) go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
    Highlight/select the AIM account.
    In the Info Tab deselect the "Enable this Account" to make sure you are Logged out.
    In the Server Settings change the Port to 443
    You can decide not to use SSL as well if you wish  (the server name automatically loses the leading "s")
    For 2) log in to the routers set up pages and make sure it is doing UPnP
    This allows the computers  to tell the router which ports to open. It also allows multiple devices to use the same ports.
    For iChat this allows it to Screen Share as this happens on an unlisted random port.
    Opps  forgot a couple of things.
    If you are using an APple ID registed at Apple ending in @mac.com @me.com or @iCloud.com then the passowrd at Apple has to be 16 characters or less to work with the AIM servers.
    Additionally the iCloud issued @me.com and @iCloud.com one require you to use iChat 6 in Lion or Messages in Mountian Lion due to changes Apple made to the security of letting AIM "read" the passwords.

  • HS Connection to DB2 on IBM i5, Error: General error in nvITrans_BeginT

    Hi there,
    I try to establish a connection to a DB2 Database running on an IBM i5 via the ODBC driver for this Database. Here´s what I did:
    1. Created a DSN using the Windows ODBC manager. This DSN uses the aforesaid ODBC driver and is called DB2Test. Works fine when testing it with MS Access 2003.
    2. Created HS stuff in the data dictionary using caths.sql
    3. Created entry in tnsnames.ora:
    DB2Test =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = DB2Test)
    (HS = OK)
    4. Created entry in listener.ora:
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = DB2Test)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\oracle\ora92)
    (PROGRAM = hsodbc)
    5. Created initDB2Test.ora in $ORACLE_HOME\hs\admin:
    # HS init parameters
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = DB2Test
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = ON
    6. Restarted the listener
    7. Created fixed user databaselink to DB2test with correct user credentials.
    So, everything looked quite OK up to the first select statement. Whenever I try to get some data I get the following error:
    [S1000] [9013]General error in nvITrans_BeginT - rc = -1. Please refer to the
    log file for details.
    The connection itself seems to work, if I create the link with false credentials I get the corresponding error message.
    Any ideas what I can try next ?
    Regards
    Christian

  • Error Connecting iChat! Help?

    When ever i try to connect on iChat an error message appears that says:
    iChat can't communicate with the AIM account "blahblahblah"
    The server connection was unexpectedly lost.
    This has been happening randomly and has been happening for a few months now. When i had OS 10.5 and 10.6
    Any solutions?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    The SSL is a Secure Layer of connection.
    However the AIM servers seem to drop out on this.
    The Setting in iChat 4 did not use to show you it had Changed but it would continue with a NON SSL login until you reset it Manually.
    I find you have to sett SSL first for some reason in iChat 5 and then change the Port (Pressing Enter to "Set" it) and then SSL can be turned Off again.
    I have mine Off as I know then it is Off and I am not presuming that it is an SSL login.
    There are many reasons why.
    1) iChat uses the port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login
    It also uses this port on the UDP Protocols for File Sending, Direct IM and Group Chats. Some Modems do not like this, particularly those that have to use Port Forwarding to Open ports as Forwarding is normally a Port (or series) to one IP (Computer).
    2) There is some suggestion that port 5190 gets too busy at the AIM servers.
    This is likely if lots of people have to automatically Login if the SSL server goes down. That could be millions of people, let alone the rush to switch on after School/Work in some countries.
    We Suggest port 443 as it is normally low enough in the port range to be open in the Modem or router.
    In the Tiger Firewall it was open for Mail and Web Browsing so iChat could "Piggyback" this.
    Hope this helps.

    Why does ichat video not connect?  The error message says we did not respond.

    Hi,
    iChat uses several port as they are called over the internet to do different things
    Text Chats and Video Chats are on different Ports.
    You probably don't have the port open.
    Use UPnP in your router if it has it.

  • AIM general error

    recently i have been using other AIM services such as Adium and Trillian, however due to errors, i returned to iChat as my primary messaging platform. However recently i have not been able to sign in to my AIM account and the error message which pops up saying "cannot log in to AIM. General error. Try again." I have tried deleting all plists and also resetting and updating, but no luck.

    Hi,
    AIM have only more recently added the ability to do SSL logins. (iChat 4 onwards - as opposed to the AIM for Mac prior to, and including iChat 2 and 3).
    In practice we have found that the AIM servers can be logged in to on almost any port with a non SSL login.
    The SSL login seems to prefer port 5190 or 443 but they are not exclusive.
    The SSL server is also not as stable as the "regular" server but this could just be down to the number of devices sharing the job.
    With iChat if the SSL server connection is lost ichat will default to a Non SSL Login and has to be manually reset. The info on this is not clear as to whether the setting changes itself or needs deselecting and reselecting again. (I.e. you might be blind to how iChat is actually connecting).
    It is for this reason that I don't use the SSL login.
    When you change the SSL setting does the port Change ?
    For a Jabber account SSL is always on port 5223 and Non SSL on port 5222 and the software of iChat changes the port for you.
    If the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist is holding other info for the SSL login then it may change when you change the SSL setting.
    My iChat 4 computer changes to slogin.oscar.aol.com and port 5190 and starting SSL. (The server name changes as well to have the leading s)
    I can manually change it though to 443 again.
    AS the Login is on the TCP Protocol and the File Sending is on port 5190 on the UDP Protocol you can have issues with some Routing devices that don't like this dual use of port 5190 - it is one of the reasons for changing to port 443
    As you describe having no Login at all on Non SSL I wonder if iChat is reverting to port 5190 and having a conflict or an issue with the port being opened in the routing device.
    Check the Server name and the Port the SSL login or Non SSL reverts to.

  • IChat video not connecting

    I have been through every system check I can think of/have found online. I'm using OSX 10.6.3, and I cannot figure out why I can't connect to video or audio chat. I can send invitations, and I can receive them. However, when either I or a friend clicks to accept a video/audio chat, iChat attempts to connect, and then I get a "communication error." This only started happening very recently, and before I could have video or audio chat running for hours.
    I should also mention that the times when video/audio chats have not worked, my Internet connection has been temperamental. Anyone got advice for this?

    Hi,
    *Lesson 1*
    NAT = Network Address Translation.
    This is the process the software or your routing device uses to change the data headers so that any return info comes back to your computer.
    Basically a data stream is made up of loads of packets. Each packet has headers with your IP and the port it is supposed to use for th app in progress. (It also has header info of where it is going to).
    This way the return info gets pointed to your modem (public IP) and your LAN IP (Computer) so that it will arrive.
    Stay with me
    Although the phrase or Acronym for ANT is widely used it is not actually a standard.
    There are about 4 main ways of doing this with some variants on those as well.
    See here
    iChat Prefers the one called Full Cone but other will work as well.
    Did the "Sysmetric" type get marked with an Amber blob ?
    Mine reads "Port Restricted" is Amber and works.
    The next bit of info we need is what devices (makes and models with Version numbers) are you using to get on the 'Net ?
    There can be issues if your modem Routes and you are also using a router (both will be doing NAT)
    Cable Modem generally don't route (they only do the Modem bit)
    DSL modem do route as a whole (combined Modem and router type devices).
    *Lesson 2*
    An Internet connection is divided up into what are called ports.
    The Ports refer to the gateways on to your computer for different types of internet connections. There are 65535 ports (or channels) in total.
    Web Browsing is generally on port 80
    FTP is on port 21 or 23 to start.
    Mail servers are accessed on a number of ports depending on server type and whether incoming or outgoing. Out going STMP is often on port 25.
    All these are below a threshold of 1024 and these are open in your routing device by default so that web Browsing, mail apps, and uploading Web site info by FTP works without any set up.
    iChat uses ports above this threshold.
    These ports have to be allowed or opened in the routing device.
    To give you clearer info on the How of this We will need to know the make and model with any version numbers to be able to help.
    If you are familiar with the set up pages of your device Enable UPnP as the method to open the ports needed.

    You cannot do two thing at the same time with the same statement (while your ResultSet is open you are making an insert), try using a separate Statement that the one you used for the query for the insert. If that doesn't work, make a new connection, that will do it.
    If you were using a separate statement then I'm sorry, I couldn't tell from your code. I'd had a similar problem and that's the way I solved it.

    s.close();

    That usually means something is wrong with the syntax of your sql.
    As a guess 'text' is probably a keyword and shouldn't be used as a field name. It is possible that the same is true for 'id'

  • IChat unable to connect:

    I keep getting this error message when I try logging on to ichat:
    Could not connect to AIM
    The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost.
    I have checked all of my proxy settings in firewall and have even tried my aim and .mac account. My bonjour chat seems to be working fine and other than this my internet connection is strong.
    Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know a quick fix?

    If there is a problem somewhere with your Screen name and the way it logs in to AIM this will be brought forward to Leopard when you Update as you will keep the .plists
    iChat only has .plists in your Home Folder.
    The Force Quitting of anything to do with iChat in the Activity monitor was to Force Quit iChatAgent (it has no icon in iChat 4)

  • Nokia Internet Radio Error: Connection Timed Out. ...

    Hi,
    I'm having an issue with the Nokia Internet Radio application on the Nokia N95. The app launches ok but if I try and browse the station directory or perform a search I get the error 'Connection Timed Out. Try Again' This happens almost instantly i.e. it doesn't look like it's even trying to connect. If I go to the shoutcast site and click on the 'Tune In' button next to a station the Internet radio app launches and I get an error saying 'General: System Error' and the application closes then goes back to the browser and a message saying 'Web: No Gateway Reply' The application worked fine up until recently. I upgraded to FW V 21.0.016 and hasn't worked since so it may be that this has caused the problem. I've removed and re-downloaded \ re-installed the software but still get the same issue. Web browsing works fine, so I know my internet settings are fine, and the old open-source version of the radio player even works so it's just an issue with this app. Any advice on how to fix it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    I had the same problem and I fixed it.  For me, it was because I am on the Rogers network in Canada.  Regardless of where you are many cellular neworks use firewalls and something called NAT (Network Address Translation).  Nokia should really make people aware of this because probably 50% of people around the world have this problem.  The solution for me was to use Rogers VPN or Public IP to access the internet.  Rogers blocks access to this internet connection so you have to add the service to your account for $10 per month but I have heard that other carriers like FIDO have not blocked access to it.
    On the Nokia n79 this requires creating a new access point under TOOLS>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS>DESTINATIONS.  Add a new access point with the following settings:
    Connection Name: Rogers VPN (or whatever you want to call it)
    Data Bearer: Packet Data
    Access Point Name: vpn.com
    User Name: wapuser1
    Prompt Password: No
    Password: wapuser
    Authenticaiton: Normal
    Homepage: None
    Use Access Point: After Confirmation (or change if you want something else)
    That's it. When you load the internet radio Application and it lists your options select "Rogers VPN".  If you don't see it in the list, press the soft button for Options then "Select Access Point" and you will see the full list.  If you want the VPN to be the first thing you see you can change the priority under destination settings.  Just select the VPN and press "Organize" then "Change priority".

  • General Error opening project won't go away

    This is really bad. I'm supposed to show the current cut of my 15 minute movie tomorrow, but FCE HD 3.5.1 shows a General Error when I try to open my project. Not just my current project, but for all project files in my Autosave Vault and most project files in the Trash, too.
    Here's my setup:
    MacBook Pro, OS X 10.4.9
    FCE HD 3.5.1
    Project File stored locally
    Scratch disk on an external Firewire hard disk
    Nothing about my setup has changed since I started this project
    All of a sudden this afternoon I got the dreaded "General Error."
    Open my project with the media disk unmounted and unplugged: General Error
    Trash the preferences folder and com.apple... file: General Error
    Reinstall FCE HD 3.5.1: General Error
    What else is there to do? Suggestions for how I can recover my project file without recreating it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    john

    Tom,
    Your suggestions in email to me didn't solve my problem, exactly, but got me thinking along the lines that did solve my problem. Thank-you very much.
    Bottom line: this is probably a bad practice (I'm an iMovie veteran, but a FCE newbie), but I had media spread in three different places. Video was on the external firewire scratch disck, some jpeg's were copied to the same folder (or subfolder) as the project file, and (the killer) some files were left on a server computer on the LAN.
    At some point I had disconnected from the server and FCE freaks out over that. Rather than giving a "missing media" alert like it does for a detached media or scratch disk, it gives an unhelpful "General error."
    Lesson learned: when opening a project file, be sure you are connected to any and all servers on your LAN from which you may have imported media, like pictures.
    Thanks, Tom!

    Pls Help me

    Thanks for the reply buddy...
    As per your reply....I have tried modifying my Preparedstatement properly with ? and then binding values...
    But even after doing this i am still getting the same error....
    I am clueless...
    Following is my modified Prepared Statement ::
    conn.prepareStatement(("Insert into MGX (BTS_ID,MGX_Num,Port_No,FRSM_No,RPM_Card,Multi_Link,Port_Status) values (?,?,?,?,?,?,?)"));
    stmt1.setInt(1,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("bts1")));
    stmt1.setInt(2,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("allocMgxId")));
    stmt1.setInt(3,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("allocPortNo")));
    stmt1.setInt(4,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("allocFrsmSlotNo")));
    stmt1.setInt(5,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("allocRpmNo")));
    stmt1.setInt(6,Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("allocMultiLinkNo")));
    stmt1.setString(7,"Allocated");
    Awaiting for a solution....

    Please help me to resolve the issue...
    Thanks,

    Thanks
