IChat gets choppy after 90 secs- Started after 10.4.10 update

I've tried all of the above fixes including changing the bandwith anywhere from none to LAN as well as various combinations of the Quicktime streaming speeds. Nothing has been going well. Things have been the same since going to 10.4.10. We have Comcast and the download speed is 6 Mbs and the upload is 1.2 Mbs. I've tried it on our Macbook Pro 2.4 and Macbook Pro 2.0 with the same results. In addition, the FPS is always at about 15 fps. After 90 secs or so, the video becomes very choppy and the audio quality goes out. Interestingly, my parents (Mac mini) have no problems when they iChat with my brother (Macbook 1.8). This is getting pretty frustrating.

Hi Edsel Kim,
Do you know if this service is true VoIP ?
I could not see any further as the Learn More page wanted me to type my address in and Britain is not an area they cover.
It is about which ports iChat is using When.
iChat logs in to the AIM server on port 5190 by default and this can be changed anything but we suggested 443 as this is below 1024 and also used for secure mail applications.
This is ion the TCP protocol and allows you to Text chat.
If you want to Send files or Pics in the chat, iChat moves to the UDP Protocol and the Chat reads "Direct Chat"
iChat also uses UDP on port 5190 for Group chats.
And also your Buddy list - who is online and new Buddy pic and Status Messages.
For the A/v Side iChat uses different ports
The Visible invite you see in on Port 5678 on the UDP Protocol.
Then as ichat is a VoIP app it moves to port 5060 and contacts the SNATMAP server. This is an SIP/VoIP server that your iChat tells what ports it wants to use for the A/V chat from 16384-16403 (4 ports for a 1-1 vid chat)
This SIP process involves the SNATMAP server finding your Buddy over SIP and telling their iChat which ports.
It is effectively like an old fashioned telephone exchange with text based info passing back and forth until the call is successful then the server drops out and you are Peer to Peer (you can actually log the Buddy List off line now).
SIP is an International Standard and is always with ports 5060-5063. If the first is busy it moves up one until it finds a clear port of those 4.
Now other VoIP equipment like Vonage adapters can effect the passing of iChat SIP data.
AN ISP that offers a VoIP service can block the ports expecting extra fees for the service - although on the whole if they are told they are blocking an application they relent and open the ports.
So no. SIP is on port 5060 and can not be moved as it an International standard.
Find out if the ISP offer a VoIP service and see if they block the ports.
Any Vonage or similar adapter needs to taken out of being In-Line between the computer and modem and off a separate Ethernet port from a router (or routing modem).

  • Call quality gets choppy after a certain time

Hello, Having an issue with my Comcast phone service.  Quality seems to be good (for VOIP) on most calls, however, if I have a call that runs over 45 minutes or so, the line gets choppy and I'm only able to hear about 1 out of every 3 words.  This happens consistenty on longer calls after a certain period of time (usually after around 45 minutes).  There doesn't seem to be any problem at all during shorter calls, but it's incredibly annoying since I use my phone for work and many of my work calls run longer. Thanks,Ryan

Group video calls have a fair usage policy so if you are doing a group video call more than 4 hours a day/100 hours a month then you could have issues.  Normal video calls should not have that limitation though I could imaging there could possibly be a limitation if you attempted to keep a single video call running 24x7x365.

  • IChat Bonjour broken after 10.4.6 update

After running the OS X 10.4.6 update yesterday, Bonjour suddenly stopped fucntioning properly in iChat. iChat with AIM buddies functions fine. But Bonjour tells me I'm all alone on the network -- even though other computers show up when I browse Network. Others in my office who have not yet updated are not experiencing any problems seeing each other in Bonjour.

    Hi Scott,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I have just got my Intel MacBookPro and updated it to 10.4.6 and it works fine over Bonjour
Both are now on 10.4.6 which maybe a help.
Having said that I would run the Combo intaller for the computer type you are on as this often sorts out little quirks like this.

  • Can't get email after Firmware 2.0 update

I updated to 2.0 and my email worked for the first day.
Now neither my Roadrunner email or my gmail account can get mail on my iPhone.
The mail program runs and never stops spinning, just times out.
    Any suggestions?

We have three Original iPhone's and the same thing happened to all of our phones. Email will download a few times and then we just get the "spinning wheel". If we turn off the phone and restart it, email will download. After the initial download it may work for a few seconds to an hour and then stops working. Basically we have to restart our phones every time we want to check/download email. Also experiencing tremendous battery drain with 2.0 - not sure why? I would go back to the old firmware if I could and wait it out. Not happy at all - looking for 2.0.1???

  • Aperture 3: GPS data gets lost after 'Update from Master'

My library contains photos in JPEG format that I geotag in Places, then I save the metadata with 'Write IPTC Metadata to Master'. The problem I have is, that the GPS data gets lost after I do an 'Update from Master', even if I saved the metadata before. I'm having this problem with referenced and managed photos and all my JPEGs from several different cameras. The only way to permanently store the GPS info into my photos seems to be to export the geotagged photos as versions.
Does anybody has the same problem or knows how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

Use Houdah geo (http://www.houdah.com) to write location data back to the EXIF. It's interface is very similar to Places (Google maps and pins) and you can interface with the Aperture library. It's a bit of a pain, but if you need it done now rather than wait for an Aperture 3 fix, then...

  • Audio gets choppy and becomes unusable after a few weeks of uptime

Hi, I am dying to know if anyone else sees this problem.  I'm running a fully-loaded 2011 iMac (still the latest model as of this writing) and it stays up 24x7 (it's a work machine that is constantly compiling and testing software).  I listen to music, mainly using Spotify, during the day.  Parallels, VPN Tracker, Skype, and Chrome is always on as well.
After 20-30 days, the audio, across the board, starts to get choppy (music, Skype, even system sounds).  After a day or so, it eventually gets to where the choppiness is so bad that audio is completely unusable.  The only thing that I've found that fixes it is a reboot.  Sigh...  I've tried closing every application, plugging and unplugging the speakers, and chanting, and nothing but rebooting helps.  As far as I can tell, there is no way to "restart" the audio system specifically.
Anyone else being annoyed by this problem?
    TMJ

This is a puzzle alright. A SMC Reset can clear problems of no sound but I don't think that is what's happening here. Perhaps using a system managenent Application like OnyX would keep the conflicting signals from becoming a problem.

  • My 3rd generation ipad even though my battery is at 100 % the screen goes black after sitting for more than 15 mins. The only way to get it to come is by resetting the ipad. Is there a fix for this. It all started after the last two updates.

    Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • Anyone else having issues with third party changers saying "this accessory not supported". I get it every time I plug my phone. It only started after the iOS 7 updates

Anyone else having issues with third party changers saying "this accessory not supported". I get it every time I plug my phone. It only started after the iOS 7 update?

That's because part of iOS7 had code in it to look for and recognize unsigned cables.
In other words, Apple knew that people used non-signed ones and didn't care....until last month when they decided to care. People with iOS6 and lower should experience no issues (unless Apple patches those iOS versions) but folks with iOS7 will need to deal with it.

  • How can I get PSE12 Trial Editor to start after icon is clicked, when Organizer runs ok?

How can I get PSE12-Trial Editor to start, after Editor icon is clicked, although Organizer runs? The wait or loading icon or message runs for about 60 seconds, then disappears and actual load and run of Editor space never occurs.
    Can you help?

It must be on your iPad somewhere.  Pull down on the center of your iPad screen to bring up spotlight search at the top.  Enter Starz in the search box to see if the app is located below it.  If it is, and is "hiding" inside a folder, the name of the folder it is in will appear to the far right.
