IChat "idle" status question

So, why would you want someone to not see "idle" status? Is this a security risk or something. Isn't it just about the same as "away" ?
I have only allow people in my buddy list to see me, so I am guessing if this is a security risk, that wouldn't matter in this case...right?

One forum is enough. I read them all (iChat 3 does tend to be first though)

  • IChat Idle Status like Adium

I was wondering if anyone knew of a script or preference tweak that would allow an automatic Idle status like the one Adium deploys with their application, Where I can just choose a predetermined time as to how long I've gone "idle" and it continue to rack up the minutes from there on out without switching back to "Available" until i choose otherwise.
I realize that I could just set my status as "away" with the preference of not allowing people to see when I'm actually not at my computer, but there are times I would much rather go into an idle status to make my absence more believable even when i return.
I can't imagine this to be all that difficult as that most, including AOL's own AIM client, allows this. I just personally don't know where to begin. I've scoured through various forums looking for an answer and I'm just shocked this hasn't been asked before.
It is the only feature I miss from Adium but I love iChat's simplicity and design that much more for me to want to go back to Adium.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
The most I have seen on this is this Hint and comment set

Even Chax, an iChat Add On, does it by setting an Away message rather than Idle
I am not sure it is in the Chax Version for Snow Leopard either. (Still in Alpha)

  • Changing iChat idle status timeout

    Hi there,
I've used this commands to change the default iChat idle timeout which is 15 minutes:
    +defaults write com.apple.ichatagent UserIdleTimeout 3000+
    +killall iChatAgent+
    but it didn't work .
can somebody help me to change this default timeout?
    Thanks

That is the method The Hint was originally written for iChat 2 and was reported to be nit so effective in iChat 3
However as it is Leopard why not use the option in iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security tab to Block others from seeing you are Idle ?

  • Tuxedo client was in idle status and lic.txt question

I found that my tuxedo client code didn't work till yesterday and it looks like idle status. There is not any error info written to client application log or ULOG(except "INFO: License file d:\tuxedo9.1\udataojb\lic.txt not found"). I check another Tuxedo client environment and nothing wrong was found in client application log or ULOG. What's wrong with it? Thanks for your kindly reply.

    Hi Bill,
I'm afraid I'm not following what's happening. Are you saying your client stopped working yesterday? Or are you saying it wasn't working until yesterday?
In any case, clients are for the most part completely under the control of your application code. So my guess is you'll need to attach a debugger to the client process and try and figure out what the client is doing. Alternatively you could add logging statements into your application code to try and figure out where in your application the client process is waiting.

  • Hp Officejet Proo 8600 stuck on idle status

My printer will not leave idle status.  I followed the directions that others have posted about right clicking, removing printers and readding.  I did that and printer is still idle...any other suggestions

Hello drewjilljess and welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have an Officejet Pro 8600 that is always saying it's idle, which leads me to believe you are using this with a Mac computer. I will do my best to help you out
Now as far as I know (and don't get me wrong, I don't know everything ), the printer shows as idle on a Mac whenever it's not in use, so I would think it normal for it to show idle all the time. That leads to my next question though, which is, are you able to print or are you having issues? If you are experiencing issues trying to print, can you let me know what happens when you try to print?
When you respond can you let me know how the printer is connected to the Mac as well as which version of Mac you're working with? Thanks so much, hope to hear from you soon!

  • Ichat away status

    Hi,
My ichat recently been changing its status on its own. I usually put my status as away, and when I log off for a few hours and then log back on it will still say that I am away. Recently when I have been logging off then logging back on it's saying available. I haven't done anything to it, so I don't know what is causing this. The only thing I can think of is that I recently updated my computer, but it was for itunes and something about security. I remember it was on the day they released lion. I am currently using ichat 4.0.9 on leopard. Any help would be great thank you.

    Hi,
    iChat Preferences > General section.
There should be a check box to say if iChat changes Status on Launch (The default is to be set to Available)
Unchecking this box will leave the Status as it was last set (before Quit)
There is also a setting in the Accounts pane.
This also Auto Logs in an account (AIM logins) if set.
Multiple Logins may also effect the Status.

  • Idle status

I connected my printer to mac using usb, but the status of the printer is IDLE. When I try to print, in the print queue don't appears the document and don't let me print. How I can change the idle status and print?

    Hi @zvo851 ,
I see by your post that you are unable to print. I will certainly do my best to help you.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet and the USB cable is connected directly to the computer. The USB cable shouldn't be longer then 6 feet. Try another USB port on the computer. You might have to try another USB cable.
Try and print a hardware self test on the printer to find out if it is a hardware or software issue.
Press and hold the Start Copy Black button () and the Start Copy Color button () until the product makes some noise.
Release both buttons. The self-test report prints.
    Did the self test print?
Check the driver name that is installed for the printer. Make sure it shows just the printer's name.
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen it should show the printer's name. (Deskjet 1050)
If the full printer name isn't listed correctly, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.
How was the printer name listed?
    Test the printer.
Did you download and install the newest drivers?
HP Deskjet 1050/1050A All-in-One Printer series - J410 Full Feature Software and Drivers.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a great day!

  • IChat and 'idle' status

After some time, my iChat status goes to idle. Yet in my preferences/accounts/security, I have "block others from seeing that I am idle". Why is this?

I've noticed that happening following to me making a change in the setting. I restarted iChat, verified the setting and it appears to have solved the problem.

  • IChat Video noob question- Help!

Hi, I've scoured this forum for answers and I just can't find anything (maybe my question is just too asinine).
    So, my stuff:
I have both an AIM and my Google talk accounts set up on iChat 4.
On my home network there is a PC and this macbook Pro (Leopard 10.5.3) connecting to a Linksys Wireless-B router model BEFW11S4 v.4. DHCP is set to "Disable".
I run Peerguardian but have allowed every port that iChat has requested.
Oh, and I have Comcast (just typing that is painful).
    The PROBLEM:
I'm trying to video chat with a friend who is running Tiger on an iMac and has iChat 3. He is connected directly to the internet. When I log in to either account or both there is no option for video chat(that is, the video, phone and share screen icons are blacked out) by either of his names, in AIM or Jabber. No option to invite for video chat.
Only one of my Jabber buddies has this option not blacked out in the buddy list.
I'm assuming there is something wrong on his end, but we both walked through our settings over the phone.
Is this his problem, my problem, BOTH of our problems?

At both ends the Item that says Camera Enabled and Microphone Enabled in the Video menu of iChat should both be ticked.
In the View menu the Show Status items for both Video and Audio need to to be ticked.
Can you confirm those first please.

  • Show my visibility on iChat and other questions

I have done several searches on this site and google's and still have yet to find some of the stuff I am looking for. I figured it was time to post so hopefully someone else will know.
First is it possible to be logged into iChatav3 and show yourself to individual friends as being online or offline. For example, I have a friend "sam" who I want her to see me online but I want my other friend "joe" to see me as offline, and vice versa.
Along the same lines, I have a .Mac account, the main member name is the one I use, however, the membership allows you to make other email addresses or profiles? I guess that is what they are called. Is it possible to use one of these to log in. When I try to "log in" that way it doesnt let me do it, do I need a full membership for each account?
Secondly, is there a way to downgrade to ichat2? I still have my original CD. I am currently running 10.4.2, and I recently bought an iSight. I decided not to move to 10.4.3, but I thought that the update to iChat3 might be of some use. Boy was I wrong. I chat often with someone who uses AIM on a PC, and after i got my iSight, I kept getting the "no response recieved for 10 seconds" failure. We followed just about every tutorial we could find to adjust our settings but no avail. The only thing I can think of is that iChat3 doesnt play well with either 10.4.2 or my friends PC with AIM.
Lastly, I have seen several sites where they have chatrooms for ichat. Can anyone recommend some good sites?
Sorry so long and thanks for any help anyone can give.

Yes; go under iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security and change the blocking for the people you want to see and don't want to see. There are a number of options there, so choose wisely. My iChat Help Site will explain a few of the options (namely page 2 of my site)

.Mac aliases aren't able to log into the AIM network because they aren't associated with AIM in anyway, but rather a feature of .Mac. You don't necessarily need a full/paid subscription to .Mac to use a .Mac name on the AIM network. The free trial screenname with .Mac will stay active even after your trial has expired. Note that this is the ONLY part of the .Mac service that will stay active, though.

Due to the number of users asking this question, I took a stab at it. I can 100% say that iChat 2 is NOT compatible to be installed on a Tiger-based machine. There's no way short of downgrading to Panther to use iChat 2.
Lastly, I have seen several sites where they have
chatrooms for ichat. Can anyone recommend some good
    sites?
    ichatters.com
    ichatfinder.com

There are of course several others. Doing a Google search will turn up plenty of sites.
    I hope this helps,

  • IChat video conference question?

I have a couple of and maybe some dumb questions.
I manage a small office with 3 Dell desktop windows XP Pro computers and 2 Macs (1-iMac 1000GHz & 1-Powerbook G4 1000GHz, both 10.4.8) and one Savin Office scanner/copy machine. The one Windows XP computer works as the server for the Savin copier. All are assigned static IP addresses. I'm presently running a Linksys wireless router WRT54G. We have several other seperate locations associated with the business where we would like to be able to video conference with iChat.
I use to be able to iChat (video & audio) with the office computers for about a year and a half from my office but after changing the Linksys router from an older non-wireless version to the newer wireless version WRT-54G vers. 5, I can no longer Video or Audio iChat with the office on either of the 2 Macs listed above (text chating is no problem). The 2 office computers can no longer Video or Audio iChat with any other locations any where (but they can within the office, machine to machine). After exhaustive research, I'm convinced it is the Router.
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
I know there are a lot of questions but I really don't want to spend the money and disrupt the office if there is any anticipation of problems.
The business is a Day Care Center with 9 locations so the Video & Audio chat is important to the kids and the office personnel.
If this will work flawlessly, I would go ahead and replace the 10 routers for the 10 different centers we have, so everyone can Video & Audio iChat.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jim

Might it be that you just don't have the proper ports opened on the Linksys router to allow for both the audio & video portions of iChat? The following site is a great tool in setting up ports for specific routers, including your Linksys: http://portforward.com/default.htm
I was thinking of getting the new Airport Extreme base station with N, that Apple is now advertising, to see if this works. My first question is, will it work with the Savin Office copier/scanner like the Linksys does? Is it any different in setting up than say the Linksys?
I am assuming that your Savin copier is Ethernet-enabled. Since the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) provides three Ethernet LAN ports, it should function similiarly to the Linksys to provide network access to the Savin. Since it a different device, there will be differences on setup. For example, the previous AirPort base station relied on the AirPort utilities for setup...and not a web-based one like the Linksys do. This is expected to be the same for the new model.
Is this more of a HOME piece of equipment or can I really use it in an office setting that is truely cross platform. (all computers file share with each other, particularly with the one XP machine that is the server for the Savin scanner.)
I would treat the AEBS no different than your current Linksys. Would you consider the Linksys a "HOME" piece of equipment? The AEBS should fit in quite well in a business environment as it does in a home one.
Will I have any problems at all with iChat.
As long as you have the proper ports opened on BOTH your hardware AND software firewalls, should shoudn't have any problems with iChat.

  • IChat changes status despite preference setting

IChat 2.1 on 10.3.9, changes the status back to available when returning to the computer. I deleted the pref file and reset everything, but, no change. On another computer with same OS and iChat versions, this does not happen. Also I did verify that when changed in the prefs panel, the changes are reflected in the pref xml file.

iChat was not running when I deleted it, ....
Sorry it is not yet clear to me, but "not running" can mean different things to different people.
    Had you actually
    b QUIT
iChat AV, or was it just not logged in and operating?
iChat AV should not be open in your Dock when your toss the .plist.
Also, I see you show that you are using 10.3.7. I suggest you update to the current version using the 117 MB Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo).
10.3.9 correct several issues with the previous Panther versions. Users have also reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying the Combo updates. See About the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) for specific instructions.
    I also suggest permissions repair
    b before AND after
the "Combo" install. See Gulliver's Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance FAQ for why.

  • IChat changing Status on its own

I have now had a number of events where I set my iChat Status to "Away" or a custom "In Conference", and it shows that on my Buddy List, but the rest of the world sees something different.
When they then, based on what they see as my Status, invite me to a video chat, I can look at my Status to see that it has been changed to a Red square icon and the word "Available next to that, WITHOUT ANY ACTION ON MY PART. My status has change to something other than what I set it at.
My buddies see something other than Away or In Conference. My Status on my buddy list is different than what my status shows on their buddy list. How can that be???
It happens often enough that I have taken to using the Invisible option to avoid misleading them. I should not have to do this.
    Is anyone else seeing this?

    Hi grandpa,
Yes Unfortunately we know about this one.
From any AIM logged in Screen Name changing the Status Message in the Buddy list does not work as it should.
You see in your Buddy List what you chose.
What Your Buddies see is the Last Message (if there was one) and the last Status colour.
So you can get it to Show a Message of Away but with a green Available Blob.
You can also do it the other way.
    Two main work arounds.
In Leopard setting the stats in a Jabber or Bonjour Buddy list works as they all display the same.
For Snow Leopard and Leopard using the Menu Bar incon to set the messages works.

It's only for answering the email in case you have any questions or remarks about your status and so on.
On that you should include that "follow up number" in the subject line of the eMail to identify the "follow up" mail and group all mails relating to you.
It's like a ticket number on support mails.
