Ichat in mac book pro
hi when ever i try to start a video con with ichat the programme quits, yesterday it was working fine on my old powerbook, also photo booth and text messaging work ok.
i migrated my old old settings from one to the other booth are using most current os X
If you want to make sure that you have a good version of iChat, put the OS X Install disk one into your drive while you are already running OS X (just to clarify, I mean do not start up from the install disk). You can open up the "Install Bundled Software Only" and I believe that you can select which of the programs you want to install (only iChat). It should guide you through the steps and you should be fine after you are through. Hope this helps!

Check the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth setting.
iChat needs to see a Minimum of 128kbps to do 1-1 chats in Video
For 3 and 4 way chats it needs 384kbps
Set the Bandwidth to 500kbps if it is set lower.
Also check the speed you are getting from your Internet supplier.

AIM ichat will not sign in on Mac book pro/Lion. It always says error..?
mac book pros on lion will not sign in to ichat using a AIM. My computer was took to the genius bar and it could not be logged into ichat. everything was tried. they said it was probably a bug so can apple please fix it in the next update? thanks.

Welcome to the Support Communities
It really depends on what you have done so far.
The Simplest is to open iChat go the word iChat in the Menu Bar (Drop Down Menu)
Select Preferences.
In there select Accounts.
Highlight any account in the list you no longer want (you can't delete the Bonjour one)
Once highlighted press the minus button at the bottom of the list.

i just got a mac book pro the other day and didnt recive ichat instead i have messages.. i dont like messages and i want ichat is there any way i can possibly downgrade to ichat with out harming my computer.

I need to talk to someone about changing all of my accounts. A iCloud account was opened not by me and I lost 17 years of contacts. I have slowly gotten them back. My files from my Mac Book were taken and are gone. It has cost me about 60,000 dollars in business since November which has effected my staff as well. Many personal ireplacable memories of my childrens Photos were taken, Business, designs and accounting and personalFiles you name it gone or corrupted. My main PC including 4 external hard drives, then the Mac Book, My Iphones,itouch. Ipad were next and then my Mac Book pro. This is very humbling and heart felt. those who work with me have very strong beliefs, it was an internal doing or I should say someone gained or was allowed access to my home and equipment. I travel and tour and am gone quite a bit. This was and is the most difficult thing that has happened to me in a long time. In truth business and work will and can be rectified that not the point. It's how and what has been done which is the most damaging very personal almost vidictive but I will stop there. I feel so violated and saddened at the same time. I am hoping to contact someone through Apple or even an outside source to see if my files can be recouped and how to go about doing these changes all at once without all of the emails back and forth to approve changes in accounts what a pain. I want to change all accounts associated with apple. Apple ID and Pass words, I tunes ID and Pass word you name it.When I leave for work now days I have to take all of my equipment or lock things in the safe. I have an alarm system that is very good in additons to, animals still with the animals inside the motion detectors are off and in reality the damage has been done . I now this sounds crazy but I have proof of my back up files not all of them plus you can see in my documents all of my business accounts which are in orderof complition and dates are empty. My email accounts were also hacked and thru that individuals were able to change at will. When you have over 20 years of an association and relationships they know everything about someone. I do not want to press charges but I am to that point I need to bring in someone to investigate and I really do not know whom to even call. I have won awards for my work and my designs and information being taken has hurt more than words can express. I am currently out of town doing this late at night. I have changed my banking you name it. I need to have access to my computers to work but the stress of these constant changes and invasion of privacy are beyond expression. I plug in any of my usb drives and they are empty or my computers do not recognize them. I plug in my usb connector from my HP 8100 Printer with Blue tooth capabilities and it pops up and an external E drive for downloading just like an external drive. My printer acepts every imaginable portable disk on the market . Many of my usb drives are gone or have been corrupted. I have this darn air drop that goes on all the time. My computers I turn off and then they are on when I get up. I can go on and on. I live in the bay area and I am asking for help in trying to stop all of this. I will call Apple next but I wanted to put it out on this forum with the hopes of some response or input. I have all of my new and very minimal recovered information now on a web-based server which I know is safe the pass words and set up were done very discreetly (one can only hope). I apologize in advance for laying this out there like this. I am just so frustrated and because of the POSSIBLE implications makes it even harder In which I truly want to be proven wrong. I have never written or thought that I would be doing this as it is. If anything I hope some good comes out of this for someone. Bluetooth is a powerful tool this much I know now. Wow this is just simply amazing. There are 14 products I have purchased. I have been a windows person for years because of my work somethings are prapriatary to that OS but I love the Apple products. I am despratley trying not to nor will I throw in the towel. I know its a great product and its not the product. I just want to have the best opotunity to recover and have control over my designs and pretty much my privacy and peace of mind not too much to ask..:-) Oh! do not get me wrong I am willing to pay for services thats not the issue here. I have several Mac Book Pros that I am responsible for. They will no longer recognize the camera in SmartBoard and in Smart Bridgit since updating to 10.8.5. One of the machines is even running 10.9 and it still won't work. I have teachers who are very frustrated because they wish to use the Bridgit Software in their classrooms. Skype appears to be working fine. It is just the Smart Board Software.

Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)

If running Mountain Lion I take it you have added the AIM name to the Messages > Preferences > Accounts ?
Have you got the Buddy list on view ?
Is it the combined one called "Buddies" or a separate one for AIM ? (You can unlink them in the General section of the Preferences).
Are you using the Video icon top right of the Messages main window or the green iCons in a Buddy List ?

I would like to download iMessage for my mac book pro.
I would like to download iMessage for my mac book pro OS X, 10.8.1. When I try to install imessage it says that I need 10.7. What do I have to do to get imessage installed?
It sounds like you already have iMessages setup. Did you sign into iCloud from system preferences and did you also add your iCloud account to Mail?
They should, just sign you into iMessages when you load Messages.app.
If you are only being asked to put in your AIM id (which it is really asking for your APPLE ID) then it means that you are already signed into iMessages (hopefully)
To check this, go to Messages>Preferences>accounts and choose iMessages. Make sure that it says it is enabled.
Now close out of the preferences, and then hit cmd 0, to bring up the Chat Box.
The Chat box lets you use iMessages begin a conversation with a friend in your contacts.
simply type their name into the TO field at the top of the chat box and find a contact with "IMessages" next to their name. Hover over that contact, and if a blue Talk Bubble comes up next to the name, that account is ready to receive iMessages.
Click the account and begin a conversation.
If you have setup everything correctly with your Apple ID on your iDevices as well as in Messages on OSX, you should be able to have a synced conversation with all of them.
Please note, if you were using your Apple ID with iChat before ML, then you most certainly have an AIM account and you were using it in the past. If you want a buddy list, then you should follow the prompt to sign in with your AIM account, but treat it like it is asking you for an Apple ID. Sign in with your apple id to the aim account it asks you to sign into and then you'll have your old iChat buddy list back.
iMessages does not have a buddy list associated with it. you need to organize your Contacts with their user information and then you need to use the To field in the chat box to communicate and find people with iMessages. Only gtalk, jabber, aim, bonjour, yahoo have the ability to show you a buddy list. iMessages buddy list is Contacts.app
if iMessages is not enabled, you can enable it by clicking on the iMessages account in Messages>preferences>accounts and then signing in with the same apple id you have tied to your iOS devices.

Cant find instant message on my mac book pro
im running snowleopard on my mac book pro and i cant acess or find my instant messaging, no icon, and cant find it in finder or anywhere??? i bought it in 2011, its actually my sisters, my 2009 MBP works fine, any answers out there?
In answer to your second question, it wouldn't matter much on your sister's MBP, as Snow Leopard doesn't support iCloud for messaging (or for much of anything, though you can force a few things). Her iChat is limited to AIM instant messaging and such.
On your MBP, which according to your profile is running Lion (10.7.5), you also won't have access to iCloud messaging (iMessage) unless you installed the beta-test iMessages application and somehow kept it running. (I have heard it can no longer be installed and may no longer work at all. That's third-hand; I haven't tried it.) Your iChat will also be limited to AIM and such.
For those with iMessage-capable phones and computers, there is a choice to be made. Apple's apparent concept for iCloud would suggest that you would use a single iCloud account for all of the devices you individually own or use. (I do that; my wife does also, with her own ID.) That model works well when, for example, you want to receive all the same iMessages on all of your devices. Even if you don't, there are ways to keep them separate (e.g., use the phone number to send/receive iMessages on your iPhone while using an email address on the MBP). -

Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.

I have a new mac book pro which i use in england but I need to use German charachters frequently, is there a way of having both visable on the keyboard?
For example so that I can just press shift or another key to get the German character.Some may already exist, but you will have to learn them. On my old system these can be found through keyviewer.app For example, if I press option+s I get ß Umlaut is a bit cumbersome as option+u then the actual letter. It may be possible to bind a key to do this function, possibly through System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
I have old, old references for utilities that let you rebind keys to other functions, and you would have to see if they have modern equivalents.

Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!
My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then.
