IChat-initiated Screen Sharing across Internet

For those of us supporting Aged Parental Units and their Macs, iChat Screensharing is the Killer App to end all killer apps. And when it doesn't work, it's really frustrating.
One thing that makes iChat Screensharing preferable to Timbuktu or generic VNC shareware is that I don't have to walk the "computer illiterate" (can they retire that cute phrase in 2009?) through configuring port-mapping on his NAT router. "All" I have to do is talk the user through:
1. getting an AIM i.d.
2. configuring iChat to use that AIM i.d.
3. finding System Preferences > Sharing, and enabling Screen Sharing
+(have I forgotten anything?)+
At that point I should be able to ask to share the other person's screen. The really big piece of magic, *contacting someone who is behind a NAT router*, is handled; I presume by some clever sleight-of-hand by the AOL server which the AIM client is logged into.
Okay: I can't get it to work for my father. He's running 10.5.6. I can screen-share using the iChat interface when I'm on the same LAN as he, but not from outside.
His firewall is off. His router is an Airport Extreme, to which he's connected by ethernet cable. The Airport Extreme configuration is about as vanilla as it gets.
Can anyone spot something I've forgotten to do, or ask a followup, or suggest the next troubleshooting strategy?
Thanks,
Chap

Hi,
It is somewhat of a feature that Getting iChat to work depends on the devices used at each end.
iChat has to be able to identify very clearly where it is in relation to the Internet for it work/connect in Video and Audio chats.
As far as we can tell Video and Audio chats will work if you Port Forward certain ports Or allow them via other methods such as Port Triggering, DMZ or UPnP.
We know the ports through using Application like Little Snitch and also Apple have published them.
For Tiger and Earlier http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507?viewlocale=en_US
For iChat 4 in Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282?viewlocale=en_US
What the second one does not tell you is that you need some of the Info from the first if using Bonjour or Jabber IDs as well as AIM.
It also fails to say anything about the Screen Sharing.
AS I have said before the Testing that some of the Regular posters have done show that Screen Sharing seems to be a Random port, separate from the Audio component of that connection.
As you will see from the two links the title includes the mention of NAT (Network Address Translation)
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering and DMZ all rely heavily on NAT being done in the routing device.
UPnP seem less reliant on NAT to get through any routing device.
If you have a modem that routes it is likely that it is issuing IP addresses to the computers (DHCP)
IF you then add a router that also does DHCP then the computers get two IPs (Although they can only display one)
iChat can not cope with this.
It is possible to get a router as well as a non routing modem to pass the Public IP to the computer which would exclude the need to open any ports (As they would All be open)
An Base Station can be behind a Routing Modem and set to Not be a router (Just a wireless access point) which would also preclude the need to Set Port Mapping Protocol in it.
We are in the land of "Ifs, Buts and Maybes" when we try and cover all the possibilities that people may have when dealing with a certain lack of information.

  • Screen sharing across internet

I had set up my Mac for screen sharing with Lion and was able to share the screen to another Mac on the local network, or VNC across the internet. Upgraded to Mountain Lion and screen sharing continued to work both locally and remote.
Moved to Mavericks and now the screen sharing works locally, but will only work for about 30 minutes across the internet. If I reboot the Mac, then I can access the screen across the internet for about 30 minutes, then the connection drops and I would have to reboot the Mac again.
I have screen sharing turned on by:
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing. Clicked on 'Computer Settings...' and checked 'VNC viewers can connect...' and gave it a password.
I can access this remote Mac across the internet using either JollysFastVNC, or the screen sharing app via Finder. Turns out that remote command line and Finder also can access this machine for about 30 minutes, then connection drops.
Has anybody else seen this problem, or have any suggestions on what I can try to keep remote access working for more than 30 minutes?

I don't have a solution (yet). I have the same problem with a Mac Mini remotely. After some short length of time, my ability to control remotely vaporizes. The Mini is running 10.9.1. It seemed to work ok earlier - although the previous version of Mavericks kept screen sharing from working if the firewall was enabled at all. The last system update from Apple fixed that.
But this isn't universal. I can connect with LogMeIn to the Mini after a fresh reboot, but eventually (30 min?) all I get is a black screen. I can connect with LogMeIn to a MacBook Pro on the same remote network as the Mini and it works just fine. I can even connect with LogMeIn to the MacBook Pro and then do screen sharing to the Mini on the same remote network - until that 30 minute? window has elapsed, and then screen sharing fails to connect without even telling me it failed (no black screen, no alert, nothing). Then that doesn't work either. File sharing from that MacBook Pro to the Mini on the same remote network continues to work, and server applications continue running fine on the Mini. For some reason the only problem is that I can't *see* the remote Mini on 10.9.1 for more than a short period after a reboot. All 3 computers involved are running 10.9.1, but only one (the Mini) is failing like this.
It sounds like the problem you are having. If I figure anything else out I'll let you know.

  • IChat AV screen sharing display size limit?

My machine OSX 10.5.1, iChat 4.0 on 17in Powerbook; other machine OSX 10.5.1, iChat 4.0 on Macbook Pro WITH 20in Cinema Display connected as 2nd desktop. Connection is Jabber via an OSX 10.4.11 Server and is 'long-range' in the sense of being via the internet, not down the hall.
Sharing my Powerbook's screen works fine. Sharing the other way around hangs at 'Starting Screen Sharing'. However, if I reduce the resolution of the Cinema display by a few notches it works.
Screen sharing (i.e. the vnc://...) works both ways without messing with the resolution.
I'm trying to make this work as a support service for my clients, many of whom have this dual-display setup. I can't use Screen Sharing because the users are behind NAT.
Is there a known limit in the size of desktop iChat can share? And why would it be different from Screen Sharing? Any ideas gratefully received.

I have seen the screen shared display at different sizes on my Apple Cinema 17". (will be 5 years old on 22nd Jan)
As far as I could tell the differences were/are based on the Screen resolution at the far end.
As both methods are based on Apple Remote Desktop it would seem strange that there would be a difference.
I would say by casual observation that iChat's version does seem somehow to be more screen intensive.
My G4 connected to the 17" screen shows the MacBook Pro 15" display at full height and width (Less menu bar and DOCK) with VNC.
Some strange quirk is preventing me from doing it with iChat right now.
    Does seem odd.
I have tried playing with the resolutions on both to see if it will work over Bonjour but no luck.

  • Screen-Sharing and Internet-Sharing via same network connection

    Hello out there,
I'm using a TiBook (G4 867MHz) and a MacBook Pro 17". They are connected via a WLAN-router. Additionally the MBP is connected to the internet via an UMTS-connection established with a Merlin 870XU type PC-card.
Network is working fine, including screen-sharing. Also the internet connection on MBP works without error. But if I activate Internet-Sharing via WLAN to get my TiBook connected to the internet, the MBP connection to the WLAN is cut off.
Can somebody tell me what's going wrong and how to solve it?
    Greetings from good old Germany

  • Lion screen sharing over Internet

I'm having some issues setting up screen sharing.  The problem is that I set it all up and can see the other computer when we are on the same network.  But I cannot see the device when I'm back home and trying to screen share over the internet.
I need to be able to see the screen of my client's Mac while I am at home.
Here is what I've done to set up screen sharing:
Both Macs are running Lion 10.7.3
I have set myself up in the address book of the Mac I want to access. In my address book card I have multiple emails.  One of them is the email that I use as my Apple ID.
I turned on screen sharing on the remote computer and added myself to the list of people able to screen share by selecting my address book card that includes my Apple ID.
    Access is for all users
I have checked "Anyone can request permission to control screen."
On my computer I have ensured that my Apple ID is included in the Users and Groups control panel.
When I am on their network, in their home, I see their computer in the shared devices section of my Finder window.
I am able to request permission to screen share and am able to gain permission when they accept.
But when I get home, their computer does not show up in my Finder window under shared devices.
What critical step am I missing?
    Thanks!

Yes, I didn't say Back to My Mac doesn't let you share the screen over the internet - it does.  But it requires you to know the password of the iCloud account that is signed in on the client's computer, as I've said.  Your client would be nuts to give you that password, as would you be to sign in your iCloud account on his/her machine.  That's not an option.
Here's what Apple says about using Back to My Mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3866
    Here's another nice summary:

  • Printer sharing across internet sharing

I hope I don't confuse everyone with this.
I have three computers—an iMac running Snow Leopard, an iMac running Lion, and a Mini running Leopard. The SL iMac has a printer plugged into it. The other two computers are across the house from it.
Those two computers are next to each other. The Lion iMac is connected to the Internet via WiFi. The Mini, which does not have wireless, is connected to the Internet via Internet Sharing over an ethernet cable to the Lion iMac.
Now here's the problem. I can print from the Lion iMac through printer sharing across to the SL iMac. However, I can't figure out how to print from the Mini. It won't find the SL iMac's printer. Enabling printer sharing on the Lion iMac lets the Mini see it as a 'printer,' but it won't print across to the SL iMac.
So with this setup, is it possible to print to the SL iMac from the wireless-less Mini?
Just to ward off possible non-workable solutions, rearranging the computers is not feasable right now. It is also not possible to connect the Mini directly to the internet via ethernet. My cable modem is actually in a near-inaccessable part of the house due to that being where the only cable plug is. I have a Time Capsule attached to it, which broadcasts my wireless signal that the WiFi computers can pick up. And no, I can't connect the printer to the Time Capsule—believe me, I tried. I don't want to have to start buying long cables and drilling holes if there's a simpler solution.
    Thanks in advance.

If I switch to the discussed set up (Airport Extreme N router), will adding an AX in between at 15 feet help bridge the link between the G5's Airport extreme card and the living room's AX?
Yes. But I still think you should verify if Wi-Fi interference is the cause of your poor signal only 30' away from the AX before going out and purchase anything. Remember, you will tradeoff bandwidth performance for signal strength. With audio, this can be a negative factor.
If you can get a hold of a laptop, I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with the laptop near the AX, note the readings, and then, choose the locations between the AX and, finally, where you have the G5.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the laptop, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating the base station or the G5 until they are within a 20dB SNR range.

  • IChat with Screen Sharing setting

Hi everybody, I often use iChat to check on my daughter's Macbook. When I asked her accept me to control her Macbook Screen, I have to wait a little bit. I wondered, Is there anyway that I can control my daughter's Macbook screen without her permit? Please help me this out! Thank you.
    Have a nice day.

Check out Chax. It will allow an auto-accept of screen sharing.

    Messages 7.x: Share your screen

  • Screen sharing across snow leopard macs is unpredictable

    Ok,
This is independent on the wake on wireless setup.
I have successfully upgraded 3 macs at home - one 2007 generation mac mini (connected to TV), one 2009 generation mac mini (in the office), and a 2009 mac book pro that roams with me. All have been upgraded to Snow Leopard. The two mac mini's did a standard SL upgrade; the mac book pro did a fresh SL install (I reformatted the disk first).
Here's the problem = regardless of whether the mac's are sleeping or not, I get intermittent problems when trying to use the 'Share Screen" features. I do have Back to Mac turned on on all three. On each of the two mac minis I have one account that can screen share, and when I try to connect from my MBP to share the screen, the login box pops up and I put in the right credentials. Then, that little wheel in the lower left corner of the left hand box starts spinning, but it never connects. The connect and cancel buttons are grayed out - so I can't cancel. Even after 15 minutes, it never connects and there is no way to kill the login box without restarting - even relaunching the finder does not cause the login box to quit (nor does quitting the screen sharing application in the dock).
    Is this a bug?

There is definitely a problem - all three macs are on SL and each of them is experiencing this problem. I am running a 2008 1tb time capsule that has the current firmware. The only way I can connect is if I go directly to the mac I'm trying to connect to and change the 'share screen' permissions to 'all users' and then back to the 'just these users' that have permissions. Then, I can connect ok for another 10 or fifteen minutes, but after that the problem happens again.
The firewalls are turned off on all machines.
I can't kill the login screen that continues to try to connect without restarting the machine. If I kill the share screen program, the program terminates but the login box continues to show on the screen and it sits on top of all windows. Very annoying.

  • BT broadband drops iChat screen sharing when voice call initiated

Just a question, and a warning if anyone out there in the UK is contemplating BT (British Telecom) broadband, you might get this issue.
I can share a screen with someone on BT braodband, but using voice at the same time makes the video very slow and jumpy.  So, my solution used to be to phone on a normal phone line and just use the iChat for screen sharing.
Now, my mother has switched to BT broadband + BT phone (was Metronet broadband + BT phone), now, every time I start a voice call at the same time as screen sharing it crashes the iChat app.
BT tell me it is porbably a fault with the applicaiton, and the fact that it worked for over 3 years whilst on Metronet is pure coincidence.  The whole reson she switched to them was to try to save a little money, they want to charge £50/hr to diagnose what the issue might be.
Does anyone else have this problem?  If so, has anyone discovered the cause?
    Thanks
    Stephen

    HI,
Describe in more detail please what you mean by "Crash"
    Can you Video Chat ?
Can You Audio Only chat ?
These both use the same ports when making a connection and during the actual Chat
A Screen Share is  an Audio Chat+ and uses  a random port for the Screen Sharing side.
As this port is random you cannot set up Port Forwarding or Port triggering (If the router part does that) and you need to use UPnP (Universal Plug and Play).
UPnP is normally On by default in the later Home Hubs (2 and 3)
    Early versions
If she happens to be using iChat 3 or earlier though there can be issues as the Hub is capable of VoIP and using the phone over the Internet.
VoIP uses a protocol over the internet called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
This has internationally agreed ports  of 5060-5063 (it uses one and will try one at time if not available)
Early version of iChat  also used port 5060 to make connections.
However some ISPs started to Block these ports and then charge extra for this "extra" service (sometimes without notification)
Some Modems that can "route' the Phone over the internet also need to have setting changed to allow iChat to work,  (Basically the device has a SIP filter regardless of the addresses on the data packages meaning they don't get to the computer and get "lost" as they are not addressed to the Phone either).
Later versions of iChat moved away from the 5060 port(s) and used 16402 as the first choice.
Skype that also uses SIP to make connection have never used the 5060 range.
If there is  a error message about Unexpectedly Quit we could do with seeing the "Crash Log" from her Home Folder/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/iChat.

  • No Audio in iChat Screen Sharing?

I have two macs hooked up through iChat/iMessage screen sharing, and there is no audio on either side. Any help with this one?

    Hi,
    1) Can your Video to this person ?
This will "prove" you have enough Bandwidth (Internet Speed) and that the Audio works.
Screen Sharing and Video uses the same ports for the Audio part.
    2) Is the System Preferences > Sound > Input choice and the iChat/Messages menu > Preferences > Video > Microphone Drop down showing the same Choice of possible input devices ?
    3) In the Video menu of the App is Microphone/Audio Chat Enable ticked ?  (wording changes from Snow Leopard to Messages versions)
Toggling this line will add and remove the tick and Turn Off or On the Mic.

  • IChat & Screen Sharing

I have just read that Apple is going to disable iChat accounts that use the old format of @mac.com or @me.com.  I have used this for years as a way to assist my parents (in their mid-80s) via screen sharing.  It has been a Godsend and quite frankly is the reason they have been willing to continnue trying to use the computer.  They use a 2007 iMac running Mountain Lion and I use a 2008 iMac also running Mountain Lion.  I would love to upgrade to a new iMac but it just isn't in my budget and my parents will certainly not replace their iMac as they barely use it - it is pristine!  We are in different countries separated by the Atlantic Ocean and more and screen sharing makes it possible for me to help them use their compute for the most basic of tasks and to resolve simple issues such as an icon disappearing from their dock, or losing a file as they cannot understand the concept of Folders.  (When they turn on their iPad they are flummoxed that it shows what they were looking at last and not the Home screen every time, even though I have suggested they always press the home button before they stop using it).
I have tried using join.me, (which has been bought by Logmein - evil) and one or two other services but none of them is as straightforward as iChat's screen sharing capability.  Even this often causes trouble as they don't see the small window that pops up saying that I have requested to share their screen!
If there is anyone who has suggestions for alternative ways to see their screen and where either they or I can "drive" I woudl be most grateful.

    Hi,
    NO !!.
You have to use an AIM Name if you have iChat 5 or earlier or the first version of iChat 6
Since Apple went to iCloud all the MobileMe @me.com IDs have become defunct.
In the later version of iChat 6 and Messages the app makes a Check with Apple as well As AIM to perform the login.
This "double check" is not done by the earlier version and it means that iCloud Issued @me.com and @icloud.com IDs don't work in those earlier versions.
The Article is misleading as it talsk about @me.com IDs that already don't work.
Changing to @iCloud.com is not going to help as explained above.
If you are keeping those version of iChat then get an AIM name.
If you are upgrading to Mavericks the article implies they will still work in Messages.

  • IChat Screen Sharing problem on Leopard

    Hello everybody!
I've searched this forum but I couldn't find a proper solution to this, at least one that works for me... here goes!!
I've been using my mac for a while now, but for the first time today tried using iChat and Screen sharing with it. I'm having troubles with it, however, even though my chat and video/audio talk is working fine. I know that the problem is with me because my two other friends were able to connect together with screen sharing, but I was unable to connect to either of them. It seems to connect for a split second then it gives the error "Screen sharing could not be established".
    1. Screen sharing worked between me and one of the above friends while we were both at my house connected to the same wireless connection. It doesn't work anymore now that we're both at our separate homes. I do know, however, that this friend has the same router as me, but they seem to connect fine with other people.
    2. My router is a NETGEAR DG834G. I tried updating the firmware but it says it's either the wrong file or version so I gave up after two goes.
    3. I have port forwarded the following ports: 5060,5190,5220,5222,5297,5298,5353,5678,16384-16403. Also by default NAT and UPnP is enabled.
    4. I have also tried playing around with the security > firewall settings, with only access to specific applications, and then added iChat. Though I believe I played around with this while iChat was already running.
    5. I tried a Remote Reboot of my router (not by holding down the reset button, but through safari)
I know that there are some discussions where people have commented on the same error as me, but I never have seemed to found a solution that has worked out for me. If there are any suggestions that would be fantastic! thanks
    -Paul.

    Thomson-Alcatel 780 modem.
Unfortunately this is going to needs a new modem (or Bridge this one and have a router)
    Read this section http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page4a.html#_text
Although the SIP Binding to port 5060 in this device could be UnBound in Version 4 firmware it has not been fully Unbound in Version 5 or 6 (Despite the version 5/6 instructions further down that section).
The problem can make the iChat issue look intermittent with it working with some Buddies and not others.
Getting a new modem that does not have SIP binding is the only realistic way around the issue (Or setting the device to Bridge and having another router)

  • Screen sharing greyed out - Airport Extreme

    Hello all:
I'm trying to use screen sharing with another mac but my screen sharing option is greyed out. The setup is as follows:
    - Computer 1 is a Quad Mac Pro, connected to an Airport Extreme (wireless).
    - Computer 2 is a MacBook Pro (older one, but still plenty fast).
    - Both computers are running iChat 4.0.7 and OSX 10.5.7
I can ask to share Computer 2's screen and am able to view/control their screen without a problem. The problem is I'm unable to share my screen at all (greyed out). I have scoured the web and this forum to see if I can find a solution, but so far no luck.
Here's what I've done so far:
    1. Set Quicktime Streaming to 1.5Mbps on BOTH computers. Restarted iChat.
    2. Connection Doctor/Capabilities shows green checks all the way down.
    3. System Prefs/Security/Firewall: this is set to "access for specific services". In the list, File Sharing and Screen Sharing are both at top. I have also added the iChat application to the list just in case.
    4. System Prefs/Sharing - File Sharing and Screen Sharing are both on.
    5. iChat App: Screen Sharing is enabled here as well.
    6. Both computers are using .MAC (or ME) accounts.
    7. Have checked bandwith and both connections are plenty fast (20 down/8 up)
    8. Airport Extreme on my end set to WPA2 Personal (could this be causing problems)?
I'm at my wit's end, not sure how to proceed. Anyone find a way to fix this? Again, i can screenshare Computer 2 just fine. It's Computer 1 (the faster of the two) that refuses to work.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
From your end you can Offer to Share and Ask to Share (2 options)
The same is true of the Buddy (2 more options)
You only speak of this from one end.
Having said that In the Airport Base Station (Airport Utility) go to the Internet Icon pane and then the the NAT tab and set Port Mapping Protocol to be Enabled (there is no need to set ports)
