Ichat loses connection when idle

whenever my computer idles, my connection w/ ichat is lost! what can i do to stop this from happening? I don't have the connectivity problem any other time...

No problem:
By the way, welcome to Apple Discussion.
Unfortunately, whenever your mac goes to sleep, iChat will disconnect.
The only way to resolve the issue is to not have your computer not go to sleep. You can however, just have your screen go to sleep (System Preferences>Energy Saver>Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for>Never and Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for>Whatever setting you prefer.
I hope this helps!

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 drops Wi-Fi connection when idle/asleep.

My MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 has begun to lose Wi-Fi connection when idle. I can't re-connect unless I shut down computer and re-start. Worse, the system appears to lock up--I can't force quit, must press the power button to shut down. This problem occurs wherever I am using my laptop, not just with one particular Wi-Fi network.

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • IChat loses connection upon startup.

iChat loses connection every time I start it up. It'll connect after a few seconds, but it always throws me off. It also crashes the wireless router itself, and whatever is using the internet is booted off. I'm thinking it could be strictly wireless router related, but I'm wondering if it could possibly be the iChat application. I know not all wi-fi routers are compatible with MacBooks completely (or so I've read), but is it normal for only ONE application to mess up? I can connect with Skype, MSN, or any other programs that require the internet on first try.. just not iChat.

    Hi,
I know of some routers or DLS Modem (they also tend to route) that I would not want if I wanted to continue to iChat.
It is not so much that they are incompatible with the Mac but incompatible with th way iChat works..
This means you can access the set up pages with a Mac but the bits you cannot not change from those pages are sometimes "features" that do not help iChat. (mostly to do with how they handle SIP data)
Even if you had such a device iChat is unlikely to make it Crash/Lose Internet/Reboot in the way you describe.
So the device you have is capable of Wifi but you are Ethernet to it ?
Are you also doing a Wifi Connection to it ?
If you are this can cause iChat problems in Video/Audio chats.
Again it is not likely to to cause the issue you describe.
I have a Sagem Fast2405 Modem that is also a Wifi able router.
I have reduced the DHCP range to just 3 IPs for WiFi able phones.
I have two Macs one of which is WiFi but can be Ethernetted, 2 PC towers that are hard wired (Ethernet), a PC Laptop, 1 X-Box 360's that are all Set with Static IPs (there was another 360 at one stage and another Tower and Window Laptop but my daughter moved out).
I mention this to highlight the need to check the IPs of each computer and possibly the methods it has of connecting.
A Ethernet Card in your computer and the Wifi card have what are called Media Access Card (MAC) addresses (numbers).
for each MAC address the modem or router will assign a Different IP. So a computer set to "Using DHCP" in System Preferences > Network will get two IPs if connected by Wifi and Ethernet.
However it if you assign the IPS Manually (Apple's Name for Static routing that needs DHCP turned Off in the router) then it is possible to allocate the Same IP to either different connection methods or to different computers/Game Stations.
This last may cause the symptoms you describe in some routers.
It will tend to show up in those Apps that are very specific about the "path" to the internet such as iChat (Skype is less fussy as it has "Fall back" ports that rely on Web Browsing and Mail ports).
I doubt it is a faulty unit but it still remains a possibility.
    I hope this helps.

  • BT Keyboard Loses Connection When Waking from Sleep Mode

I'm running Windows 7 on a late 2009 27" iMac and my Bluetooth keyboard keeps loses connection when I wake my computer from sleep mode. Usually the only way I can get it back is my resetting. Anyone know of a way to fix this? Any help would be great appreciated.

If the MBP doesn't wake when you open the lid but does when you press any key afterward, do this:
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Copy and paste the following text in the Terminal window:
    *sudo pmset lidwake 1*
You'll be asked for your admin password. Type that in (Note: the password will not be displayed as you do so). Press Return, and quit the Terminal. Close the MBP, wait for it to sleep, and open it again. Does it wake now?
If you want to change it back so the system doesn't wake when you open the lid, repeat the procedure, but this time type or paste:
    *sudo pmset lidwake 0*

  • Discoverer Plus loses connection when COLLAPSING in Hierarchy!

I am getting an error saying that' Discoverer connection is lost. Please contact your admin" when I am collapsing hierarchies. Did you ever encounter this kind of error ever? I have like 6 levels of hierarchies(date hierarchy, like yr,season, quarter etc)...So one hierarchy is Company ->Year and other one is Year->Season->Quarter so on.... So when I collapse one by one level its ok... but when i do it all at once from the top, i.e Company, it loses connection!!
Is it some kind of a bug???
    Thanks a lot,
    rocky

    Hi
Well it does sound like the hierarchies are to blame, although to be honest with you I've seen Discoverer losing its connection for something far less trivial than that. The most common reasons for losing a connection are network issues and being out of memory either on the Discoverer client or on the server. I'd suspect that memory is an issue.
Now, your second issue relates to the use of those hierarchies. Are they perhaps date hierarchies as opposed to item hierarchies? If so, whilst they are really quite clever, they do tend to cause more problems than they solve. Personally, if you are using date hierarchies, I would create a materialized view or table of your fiscal time and then create one folder for each date in your folder. I'd drop the Oracle date hierarchies in a heart beat but this is easier said than done.
    Does this help?

  • HT1365 just installed a new wireless router (cisco linkseys E1200) and our apple laptops connect fine on one floor but lose connectivity when moved to another.  Other non apple laptops & Ipad connect with no problem no matter what floor they are on

We just installed a new wireless router to our main PC.  It's a Cisco Linkseys E1200.  All other wireless devices were able to connect without a problem, including my Ipad.  We have 2 Macbook Pro laptops.  They both connect just fine when on the same floor of our house as the router, but when we take them upstairs to the 2nd floor of the house, they lose connectivity and it states the wireless password is not the correct password.  All other 2nd floor laptops have no problem at all with connectivity no matter where they are in the house.  Please help- my husband is on the verge of selling Apple if that cannot be remedied.

This would not be a security issue symptom. I would consider checking for sources of wireless interference HT1365

  • My Photosmart Plus printer seems to lose connectivity when in sleep mode, how can I fix this?

My new photosmart plus appears to loose it's connection when it goes to sleep. At least the printers status page online says it's not connected, even though it is visible in my router and the blue light next to the antenna of the printer is on. It also appears to be connected when I poke around in the printer's settings, but if I want to print something from an app or via e-mail I have to run the wireless wizard again, select my netgear and enter the password. Once connected I get a screen where I supposedly can skip printing a report, but that does not work either, it prints no matter what I select, waste of paper and ink.
I searched around but found no solution that would work for me.
    Tech info:
wireless conection to my cable modem with Netgear router
Macbook pro and an older HP laptop are in use.
    Security is WPA2-PSK [AES]
I like the machine a lot, but this is rather anoying, what can I do to keep the connection when the printer sleeps?
    (edited to add security info)
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Does the printer not wake from sleep for both the Mac and PC?
You may want to try setting a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP.  Enter the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank. Click 'Apply'
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

    Introduction
The router that started it all, the WRT54G. In 2003, Columbia Law School Professor Eben Moglen sued Linksys to get them to release their Linux source code. They released it without a fight and continue release their source code to the public. It didn't take long to realize what could be done with the source. The OpenWRT group and Sveasoft were among the first to release updates for the WRT54G. The popularity of the WRT54G boomed. Linux and Router gurus soon took notice of the WRT54G. Today, WRT54Gs are used worldwide, many running third-party firmware. Shortly after Linksys released the first version of the WRT54G, they were bought by Cisco. Since then, many versions of the WRT54G have followed. In late 2005, Linksys switched the WRT54G to a non-Linux based operating system. This upset many in the community. Luckily, Linksys released the WRT54GL just for those who like to upgrade their routers.

  • WRT110 loses connection when second laptop connects

One laptop can be connected to the router at a time and have absolutely no problems. The problems occur when one laptop is already connected to the router and another one tries to connect to the router as well. When this happens the router completely loses it's connection to the internet. The only way I have found to fix this is to unplug and restart the router, which I shouldn't have to do every single time we want to use the internet. Sometimes it takes restarting it a couple times for it to work. Does anyone have any idea why this happens or what I can do to fix it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had this issue for a long long time. The one thing that I have found to help combat this issue is to make sure that if you are using Vista that IPv6 is off. For some reason when either my roommates desktop, laptop or my laptop has this one it will crash the network. To do this in Vista
    1. Click in Control Panel
    2. Click View Network status and tasks or Network Connections if you are in classic view
    3. Click Manage Network Connections
    4. Right click on your Wireless or Hardwire connection however you are connecting to the router and go to Properties
    5. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6.
    6. Hit ok.
    7. Reconnect the device to the network.
Initally it may crash the network. Allow the network 5 minutes to attempt to come back up on its own. If this does not work then go ahead and unplug and replug in the router. After the first crash for me it did not happen again.
Hopefully this will help with some of your problems. This is the only thing that I could find to combat the issues that you are describing. With this off we are able to run my laptop, his laptop, his desktop, an xbox360, and a blue-ray player on the network no problem. Good luck and if you have any questions please ask!

  • WiFi looses connection when idling

    Hi,
I've updated to Mavericks and since then I've following issue. If my network connection idles for a certain amount of time, Mavericks decides to drop the connection. The WiFi smybol gets greyed out and I have to maually reconnect to my network. Following can be seen in the console:
    23/10/13 07:59:25,000 kernel[0]: wlEvent: en1 en1 Link DOWN virtIf = 0

    23/10/13 07:59:26,730 mDNSResponder[66]: DeregisterInterface: Frequent transitions for interface en1 (10.0.1.3)
The connection has to idle only for a few seconds till Mavericks decides to drop it. What can be done against this?

Try going to the Energy Saver preferences in Preferences, and change the "power adapter" sleep settings.
I think Mavericks by default has it go to sleep after about 15 minutes, when before it just powered the screen off.

  • Ichat rarely connects, when it does, video quality is poor for one side

    Hi,
    I'm using Ichat v4.0.8.
When trying to enter a video chat, it rarely connects just says no information has been sent for 10 seconds etc etc.
If you persist and keep trying over and over it will eventually connect. The person on the other side can see me and hear me fine, but they are extremely blurred and the sound is very skippy.
We have both changed to port 443 and changed our bandwidth limit to 500kbps and still no joy.
Any help would be much apriciated!
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
In System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab are you set at 1.5Mbps ?
IS your Buddy if also on Leopard/iChat 4.x (or below) ?
If you or your Buddy has to change this setting iChat will need to be restarted to "See" the New Speed.
System Preferences > Quicktime caps all Video Streaming at the Automatic Setting in iChat 2, 3 and 4 (Panther/Tiger/Leopard).
In iChat 4 it is read as 384k In earlier version as a Zero hence the need to change it.
In iChat 3 and 4 you are trying to set your system to get iChat to see as much of your Internet Connection as is possible.
In Snow Leopard iChat 5 "Sees" the whole speed of the Internet Connection so advice then is to tone it down to "match" your Buddies speed.
Having said that there are ISPs where capping it again in the Bandwidth in iChat also helps on iChat 3 and 4.
Start with the Quicktime Setting then try different Bandwidth Speeds.

  • Lose connection when printer is turned on

I have recently set up two desktop computers on a wireless network.  One computer is connected to my cable Internet modem which is connected to my router (WRT110).  My other computer utilizes my wireless adapter.  This computer (the wireless one) connects to the Internet fine.  (Actually, the signal is always low or very low, but that's for a separate posting, I suppose.)
I just connected my HP 2575 printer to my wireless computer (haven't even installed the driver yet).  As soon as I turn the printer on, I lose my Internet connection completely on my wireless computer.  My other printer (the hard-wired one) no longer has a printer connected to it.  I hadn't thought about making this printer a network printer, but am willing to do whatever I need to be able to have my wireless computer working with the printer.  Can someone please help me?  Thanks so much.

I think you need to make some changes on your Wireless router, I think that might solve your problem.

Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
