Ichat loud hissing noise

I was chatting this evening on a latest version MacBook with another user who has the same setup. I was in Barrie and the other person in Toronto. Both of us were complaining about a terrible hissing sound during the chat. I have never had a problem with a sound like this when playing music or watching a clip from the net on the MacBook. Any suggestions why this loud screeching hissing noise exists and how to get rid of it?

I'm experiencing the exact same problem (though I'm not hearing a hissing, more like, as my brother-in-law described it, the sound of someone breaking wine glasses continually). I tried the iChat for this first time this evening with my brother-in-law, sister and their daughter, and we were getting a pretty horrible feedback noise. While it may work as a solution, using external speakers and/or microphones would seem to be counter to the whole idea of using a laptop. It shouldn't be necessary to lug such things around with you just to get good sound quality in the iChat. Headphones (another possible solution I read about) are impractical if you're having a conversation with more than one person at the other end.
I'll check out the "Volume" settings in System Preferences and see if that helps things, however.
Now, the video was great!

  • Why is there a loud hissing noise?

From time to time there is a loud hissing noise coming from the iMac speakers.  Sometimes it is very brief, other times it lasts for 15 seconds or so.  Anyone know what's causing this on a late 2013 iMac with SSD and rotating hard drive.  Thanks.

What you describe is probably hardware.
However, you might try resetting the SMC.

  • Odd hissing noise when inserting PCMCIA card

I'm testing a wireless broadband card (Sierra AC580), and I've encountered a very strange issue. When I insert the PCMCIA card into its slot, I get a loud hissing noise from the left speaker. I can reduce the volume of the noise by moving the card side to side, and sometimes I can transfer it from the left to the right speaker.
Is this some kind of interference issue between the speakers and the cell signal coming from the card? Has anyone else encountered this? The speaker volume has no effect on the volume of the sound. Neither does the mute button (F3).

I have the same sound - my MBP is only a week old as well... If you are not happy with it or are having further problems with it reading cd's or dvd'd then you should take it back to your local apple store.
I know of two other MBP users and they have the same thing... as said on other posts "not very pleasing to the ear"...

  • No sound through speakers, and LOUD hissing through headphones - Inspiron 3537

    Hi,
So yesterday the sound on my laptop's internal speakers stopped working, and when I plug the headphones in there is a loud hissing noise - way too loud to be able to stand when trying to listen to something, though I can hear the audio as well.  The volume of the hissing is not affected by the volume control on the laptop but the actual audio can be made louder.  Have also tried running the audio test in the EPSA diagnostic, and I cannot hear anything.  Anyone have any ideas?
I have a Dell Inspiron I5, model 3537.  Have had it less than 18 months so if it is a hardware failure I am extremely disappointed in the manufacturing quality.  Had my previous Philips laptop for six years and never had a problem like this!

Hello. Failure to hear tones through the speakers during the ePSA audio quick test means that the speakers have either become disconnected or failed. I don't know if you would want to take the laptop apart to check the connection, but if so there is a manual available with complete disassembly instructions.
Harder to account for the loud hissing. If you currently have the Realtek audio driver installed, switch over to the Windows native driver and see if it makes a difference.
    1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).
    2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
    3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
    4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
    5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
    6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
    7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio Device" (the native driver).
    8. Click "Next".
    9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
    10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

  • NEC3540 hissing noise

I replaced my combo drive with an NEC 3540 on my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz several months ago and I noticed from day one that whenever the drive spins it makes a (noticeably) loud hissing noise.
I'd like to know if there's some firmware fix (or any other kind of fix) that can resolve this issue. It becomes really annoying while watching movies or listening to music on the Mac.
Thanks in advance for your time!
    Power Mac G5 dual 2.3GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.5GB RAM

    Hi
NECFlash will allow you to update your firmware, if it's not the most current. The new 16X drives spin up faster than older drives, so it will likely still be louder than your old drive.
I have the ND-3550A, and it's not quiet, but it's still quieter than the DVR-109 that came with my G5, which drowned out the audio of most movies if the volume was not cranked...

  • Hissing noise on aux port

Is anyone having any issues with a loud hissing noise when listening to music in the car using the aux port and a 3.5mm jack cable. I have an iphone 4 and there is no problem but when i plug in my iphone4s i can barely hear the music unless both radio and phone are at full volume.

I have exactly the same problem.
I have an ipod touch = it works fine.
I had an ipod classic = it worked fine.
(I have even tried a dreaded android phone from samsung) = worked fine.
Now I have also tried two different iphone 4s = loud hissing.
I have also tried a latest generation ipod nano = hissing.
So I bought new cables for the car. An expensive shielded one.. = no change (lots of hissing)
The only other alternative suggestion I've found in the web is a aux-style jack connector to the iphone interface, which appears to work for most folks but then it won't be possible to charge my iphone and listen to music at the same time.
    Arghhh!

  • Won´t boot up and loud hissing sound when battery is in.

Hello, I have a powerbook g4 and leopard installed. The other day the computer started making a loud hissing sound and had a black screen(it looks like is in sleep mode) won´t come out of the apparent sleep mode. If I take the battery out it stops making the loud hissing sound but everything else remains the same. Also the light in the power cord is acting werid. The only thing I got to do was to finally turn the computer off and tried for about 3 days to charge it but the powercord wasn´t working so finally it worked(after 3 days) it almost booted up but then went into the sleep coma again. (the light indicator in the cable turned off but after taking out and put in it back in the light turned on. Please help, I can´t find any good answer for this!?? thanks everyone in advance.

I just went over and looked at the computer and it seems that is making the hissing noise again even with the battery out.

  • What's that hissing noise

My Macbook pro is a year old and I use it for school, so have it on for hours every day. Just last week I began to hear a hissing noise, or is a fan? I don't know, but I've never heard it before. It's not real loud, but it's noticeable. Any ideas?

I too have this problems. I purchased my Macbook Pro July of 2010, and recently it began making a hissing noise. It makes the sound three times, and on the same pattern each time. Mine is also not that loud, but still considerably noticeable. What should we do?

  • IChat and Screeching noise

I bought my girlfriend a new MB and when we video chat using iChat, she gets this loud screeching noise and the mic stops working. This has happened twice, the first time only lasted a few seconds and stopped (I could hear it on my end too). The second time it lasted much longer and thats when the mic gave out. When we reconnected the video chat, it was all fine, and we used the program for a good while after with no problems.
Has this happened to any of you out there? Im not sure if this is a physical problem with the laptop, since she reported no faults with it at all. This is the only thing that is happening. Could this be audio feedback?

Most of the more recent Mac Laptops have had the Mic in one of the speaker grills.
The iChat software is supposed to cut the output to the relevant speaker so that feedback does not happen.
Muting the sound and then going to System Preferences > Sound Input and lowering the Volume here is a best place to start.
Once it is low enough allow sound back to iChat and adjust to volume to be high enough without causing feedback.
(if she says YOU are very loud you may have to use this setting at your end to make yourself quieter)

  • Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro - Hissing noise and Skype/Viber call problems

    Hi,
Does anyone have the hissing noise (similar to that of the below Youtube url 12- 22 secs) with recorded videos.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=F0rKuaTgZgQ#t=12
    Sample shot : http://youtu.be/8F5M3GZkfdk
And are you able to use apps like Viber, Skype without issues... ?
    On Skype...
    a) There is a background noise (like audio fed to others mic) while chatting in normal mode and this amplifies much when on speaker mode and after few secs it becomes unusable.
    b) Also there is a issue with the voice while chatting in speaker mode... it resounds, gets repetitive and amplifies, and makes it usable.
    On Viber...
    a) When I answer the call it shows connected... but the callers phone shows still ringing, as a result can't hear anything.
    b) When I make a call, and the other person answers it... So again I cant hear anything.
    TRIED
Resetting phone from settings and also through power/volume keys.
    Is my unit defective?
Is it problem with hardware or software?

with the last update i have the same issues with voip calls on several apps (viber, facebook, hangouts) like echo, hissing and all loud noises around me seem to be amplified . I don't understand why lenovo does not fix these problems nor reply to any of the posts about this problem. i am beggining to feel like all flagships from lenovo are designed this way, i had k910 and now i have k920 with absolutely the same issue.....what is wrong with lenovo ?

  • Hissing noise from the bottom speakers after any sound

Like the title i recived my new iphone 5 yesterday and I find suddenly this problem. After any sounds like lock or any music or something else, a hissing noise start for 5-7 seconds. Is that a hardware problem?
    Thanks

    hi sailor,
contacted apple phone support, unfortunately apple care number is not free in australia.
first time it took 17min and was not able to contact a technician coz credits in my mobile ran out.
second time it took 25min. i explained all the issues
told them i reset the pram, smc and reinstalled the OS and still i hear the hissing noise.
they replied that speakers may make a hissing noise if the macbook is on battery, but the noise should be very low and it should not be audible, if the noise is audible and loud, they suspect its a hardware failure, i got my case id and will be taking it to the nearest service center here, for them to have a look.
so if u have a macbook that is under warranty dont hesitate to contact them. i guess even refurbished macbooks bought in online store also have a 1yr warranty.

  • Hissing noise from the speakers

    hi mates,
i hear a hissing sound from the internal speakers whenever the system tries to play sound through the internal speaker, be it a system sound or playing my music, or just by opening a application that may play music, i get this hissing sound before a system sound and this hissing noise continues for some time after the sounds are stopped playing, i get this hissing noise even when i change volume of the speakers. i dont get it through the headphones. the strange thing is i get this hissing noise even if i play a movie when my speakers are muted.
i went through this forum, some members have adviced to reset the pram, smc, reinstall the os, friends i tried all these but still i continue with this problem.
my macbook is brand new and just a week old.
i am really worried about this problem.

  • Laserjet Pro m177fw makes loud clicking noise and then is stuck initializing, won't print

    Hi,
Had this printer delivered today, it looks awesome, but when I turn it on, it has a loud clicking noise (like something trying to turn, but not grabbing a gear or something inside, this happens immediately upon turning it on, and then it's stuck in Initializing.  If I go into the home button and go to system settings, then reports then configuration report, I get a big green check.  I did notice that on the right most menu item, there is a yellow warning, and it doesn't seem to be able to get the detail on the ink levels of the colours.  I took out the ink cartridge and looked at it and it doesn't look like there is something to pull out to activate the cartridge (there was in my really old HP Laser jet).
What am I missing on setup?  I've read the instructions twice and also hard powered off the printer by pulling the plug and waiting a minute to plug it back in.  Same thing occurs, thanks!

Please follow these steps to take the cartridges out.
Touch the Icon and indicated on the pic.
It will come up with a screen which looks like this
Touch on the black cartridge icon and it will display " moving black cartridge to front".
Now open the cartridge door and remove the black toner.
Close the door and touch the cyan and it will move it to the front and you will have to open the door again and take the cyan out, close the door again and repert the process for magenta and yellow.
And when you want to reinstall them the same steps have to be repeated.

  • HP Laserjet P1005 printer makes a loud rasping noise as soon as it is turned on

My Laserjet P1005 printer makes a loud rasping noise as soon as it is turned on. The noise stops when the top cover is opened, but starts again when the cover is closed. The printer has been used sparingly at home and from a cursory inspection, the rollers seem to be okay. Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Thank you!

  • Mac Pro will not boot, constant loud fan noise and nothing else

    hello,
earlier tonight,i put my mac pro on sleep, then later on, when i wanted to take it off sleep and use it, it made the loud fan noise, which it always does but goes away, but this time it the fan wount slow down and the loud noise stays and i dont see anything on the screen. im guessing the fan noise is the ATI x1900 card...
any help please..i just bought it 2 months ago...

Hi, here are the steps I would go through. I would unplug the Mac Pro completely from everything and look at the video card's fan intake to make sure it isn't plugged and just make sure everything "looks" correct. I would then plug the machine back into one monitor/keyboard/mouse (leave all the other peripherals disconnected. Once that is done push the power button. Does anything happen? If not then if you have another mac and an external hard drive, make a copy of the OS on the drive and see if you can get the Mac Pro to boot off that drive. If the video card doesn't work then it will not show anything when booting off an external drive. If the external boot does work then I would suspect that you have a bad hard drive (or it crashed). At that point I hope you have a back up of all your data and such.
Mind you these are steps I would go through. What a nightmare. One other thing to check, make sure your monitor didn't die.
