IChat making buddies behind my back

iChat (3.1) has a tendency to add IM ad bots to my buddy list, even if I click "decline" as soon as the message pops up. On one hand, I like people automatically being added when they message me and we carry on a conversation, but I get like 20 messages from ad bots a day and they all find their way onto my buddy list somehow.
Any way to prevent iChat from automatically adding people to the buddy list?

Go under Preferences > Accounts > Security and allow only those people on your buddy list.
In related news, today AOL announced that they will automatically add two bots to your buddy list regardless of whether you want them or not (though you can later delete them). The bots are the moviefone and shoppingbuddy. I have yet to see this happen with iChatAV (which is good!) but did see it happen with AdiumX and there are reports of it happening on other clients.
For more info about that, see here.
Hope this helps,

  • Aim on iChat, Adding Buddies

This is the first time i've had this problem, mainly because I don't use aim so much, but I have a few friends that use it and only aim. Anyways last night I tried to add a buddy.. her name came up on my friends list, flashed a few times, then just dissappeared. I added her again and the same thing happened.. I went on Aim express and she was on my buddy list on ACTUAL aim. I don't understand why iChat is doing this too me! Please help! : (

Had the same problem myself. Oddly enough it says this topic is answered but I don't see any resolution... I tinkered around and logged out, then enabled SSL in the Server settings under Accounts in the Preferences. Logged back in and now my AIM buddies are adding in as expected.

  • Master Sheets - Created Nav Bar is Behind Assets (back layer?)

Is there a way to get assets created in the Master Sheet to be the top layer?
Creating a web page with the horizontal nav bar across the top.
I used the template and built off of that.  When I finished with the nav bar in the Master Sheet, I started to add content to my normal sheets.  The nav bar, and the drop down navigation I created are behind any assets added to the slides.
I included a mock up of another nav bar I created.  The "Home" text asset added to Sheet 1 is covering my nav bar I created in the Master Sheet.  The nav bar is in the activated state for the "Home" button.  I am using a layer stack and mouse events to create the drop down and button select effect.

    Hello,
I've spoken with the development team and they've explained this here:
A master sheet can be used as a front master and a back master. It  is even possible to have a back and front master. You can select the  masters in the properties of the sheet - by default only a back master  is used.
    Thanks again for your question!

  • I'm making some kind of back-up error

I need to back up my mail regularly. I've been doing that by making a mart burn folder and dragging the mail folder from the library of my home folder to it. I've also been dragging that Mail folder to outboard drives. It seems like that's not working when I want to import mailboxes back into my Mail app, because, even though (in Mail) I go to file..import mailboxes, then try both import for Mac OSX and also trying "other", I select the location and choose the folder that contains the files (Mail) I always get the same message which is no valid files were found! What the heck. I've tried option-dragging, plain dragging, dragging to the desk top, and I always get the same message that there's nothing to import. What am I doing wrong??
I've noticed that the suffix of the individual messages in the mailboxes is .emix, and those of the mail folders themselves are .imappmbox.
I really would like to know the right way to back up my mail so I can restore it in an emergency. The section called Backing up your email in the Mail help section isn't explaining it to me. I have no POP accounts I use, only the IMAP one from .Mac.

I don’t know what is a “mart burn folder”, but it should be no surprise that you have problems importing .imapmbox mailboxes — they correspond to mailboxes stored on the server, and hence, may or may not contain a local copy of the messages in a format that Mail may or may not be able to import the way it can import locally stored .mbox mailboxes...
It happens that, if Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments (the default setting), then Mail 2.x caches server-stored mailboxes using the exact same format it uses for locally stored mailboxes, except the suffix of the mailbox folder in the filesystem is .imapmbox instead of .mbox.
Hence, if Keep copies of messages for offline viewing was set to All messages and their attachments throughout the lifetime of the mailboxes (or since before the last rebuild), .imapmbox mailboxes can be imported back into Mail as if they were locally stored mailboxes by just renaming them so that the suffix is .mbox instead of .imapmbox — note that this wasn’t possible in Mail 1.x; that version used entirely different formats for .mbox and .imapmbox mailboxes.
Note also that, after doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Mail for Mac OS X, Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them. If you select the wrong folder, Mail says “No valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found” because it cannot find any .mbox folders within the folder you’re selecting.

  • Benefit of using iChat test buddies

My sister and I tried to unsuccessfuly to get iChat working for the first time and after reading through all the router, port, ISP issues that can affect iChat, it just makes your head hurt!
I sent my sis a list of initial things to try on her end, first being to add a iChat test user, in this case, Apple3utest01, and see if she can connect to it.
My question is, if you are able to successfully connect and see video and hear audio from a test buddy, does that mean that all of your iChat related settings are 100% a-ok and you don't have to change anything?
I'm running iChat v. 2 and am able to connect to the Apple3utest01 buddy and this was before I changed my quicktime bandwidth setting and did all the port-forwarding from my modem/router. And I did have my vonage hardwired to my modem/router. So, I'm just unsure of how helpful it is to even try a test buddy?

    Hi emmarin,
It is really a first point.
From what we can tell the appleu3test accounts do not appear to be on a NAT server/modem/router of any sort.
This will eliminate many NAT related problems when one end is doing NAT. It tends to be when both ends are doing NAT that problems can show up more.
They also have the advantage of being on fast connection and they are set to Auto-Respond which again cuts down the connection time which in turn improves the chance of connection.
Both Defcom and I run Little Snitch which puts pop up windows of the IP and Ports for us to read.
This can add to the delay in making the connection and cause it to fail.
If you have slow connections at both ends this can be a problem for your success.
So to answer the question is it a signal that everything is A-OK then no it isn't.
However it is a marker on the way.
If you can't get the Text accounts then more work needs to be done first.
Then of course we have Table 2 for more real world testing
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html
It is a bit like a racing car.
It started, so can it get out of the Pit lane and set a Provisional lap time ?
Table two allows you to set lap times with other cars on the circuit (in all senses of the phrase)

  • IChat 4 Buddies issue

Lately when I add a Buddy, it'll flash on the iChat screen and then disapear, even though that person is online. I'll receive their messages and once I do I can chat with them, but I can't find them on my list, even as offline.
So far I've only added AIM contacts, so I can't say if they apply to .Mac as well.
Anyone else has this happen? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Iggy

I've narrowed it down to an interaction problem with Leopard Apps. On my system the missing buddy is one that was previously entered into Address Book with a subtly different address. In this specific example the address was entered in Address Book as [email protected] The correct address was subsequently added to the buddy list in iChat as [email protected] The difference was in the capitalization.
iChat appears to cross reference the contact with Addressbook and chooses the incorrect version and it then disappears from the buddy list. Looking at the buddy list using AIM express web app shows that the correct version has been correctly added to the buddy list. iChat has got it's self confused by referencing to the wrong entry in AddressBook. Even deleting the incorrect AddressBook entry and redoing everything doesn't help as the wrong entry keeps coming back to AddressBook when the buddy is added to iChat.
There must be a cache somewhere that is keeping the wrong format address. Any ideas where it might be hiding? I feel confident that if I can delete that the missing buddy will reappear (might have to re add it).

  • Ichat logs me out and back in every 30 seconds.

HI, my ichat logs me out every 30 seconds that i am on line, and after i log back in about 5 times it says that i have attempted to log in too often in a short period of time, i have already tried swiching to port 443 and it still has the same problem, i am curently in saudi arabia, i would be very grateful if you could help me fix this problem, thannks

    Hi,
If this is WiFi I would go to System Preferences > Network > Airport and enable Robust Connections.
If that does not solve or you are using Ethernet I would look at the Router Set up pages and check the Lease time on the DHCP Server.
Again if WiFi try changing the channel of the routing device to see if that improves things.
It may be that you are getting some sort of interference form someone else close by on a close or the same channel.
(the Robust setting should clear up interference form other domestic items such as power bricks for Printers and the like or Microwave ovens or power cables in walls)
The lease time being particularly short should not really effect things but it is worth checking and changing to something longer.

  • CAD Agent Desktop - Making 2nd call to Back office staff

    Hi All,
Does anyone have a solution to the following question from a customer?
“Whilst an agent is talking to a caller, it would appear that the only option available to make a second call at the same time ie. in the case where a member of call centre staff wishes to talk to the back office team whilst the customer is on hold, the agent can put the caller on hold using CAD, however they would need to press the “New Call” button on the physical telephone to dial the 2nd number as the “Make Call” feature is not available within CAD (whist the call is on hold).
The agent will frequently make a 2nd call whilst on the phone to a customer. Not being able to use CAD to make this second call will cause a lot of confusion! Is there any way around this problem?”
I know that the ‘make call’ button is disabled when the agent is in a ready state, so how do they make a 2nd call if need? I suppose they could place the caller on hold and go not ready but I’m not sure if CAD allows this (I’m away from a test lab to check) and this would affect the agent stats.
Or perhaps they could initiate a supervised transfer discuss what they need to with the back office staff member then cancel the transfer and use the alternate button to switch between caller and back office staff?
    Any suggestions would be grateful.
    Thanks Chris

Using a supervised transfer and then cancelling out of it is the only option with CAD for now. I suggest that you submit a feature request through your Cisco AM to resolve this.

  • Bonjour iChat drops buddies on local network

We use Bonjour/Rendezvous to communicate between mac users on our Ethernet network that has about 100 macs and PCs, (each with a static, assigned IP address). For about a week now we have been experiencing a peculiar issue.
Users networked via 3 of our switches using Bonjour/Rendezvous can communicate with most, (but not all), of the other users that are also connected. Within about 10 minutes these users begin to see less users in their list, even though those other users did not log out.
Users connected to the other network switches, (and some hubs), see a more stable list but also do not see all of the other connected users in their list.
Most users report that they see users in their lists that have since logged off...and/or don't see users that are indeed logged on.
Up until a week ago it worked great. The only thing we recall doing around the time the problem started was to move a few computers around to accomodate some employee promotions. (Unplugged 4 computers, shuffled them around and plugged them back into the ethernet cables at each of those desks.) We have G4s, G5s, iMacs and MacPros. Most running 10.3.9 and a few running 10.4.10.
No other systems seem to be affected. Has anyone else ran into this problem before? Any suggestions short of rebooting the entire network?

    Hi,
I have nothing on this for that size of Network.
Suggestions are that computer names are checked.
    That Account names are checked.
That port 5353 on UDP is allowing discovery in both directions and to all computers where routers are involved.
Also Collaboration Services Forum might help.

  • Ichat AV 4 behind a ipfw firewall (not mac) not working

    Hello,
I have a home network with 5 macs on it. iChat AV works just fine between computers on my network, but not to computers outside my network. I have punched the following holes in the firewall:
${fwcmd} add pass tcp from any 5190 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass tcp from any 5298 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass tcp from any 1024-65535 to any 5190
${fwcmd} add pass tcp from any 1024-65535 to any 5298
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 5060 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 5190 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 5297-5298 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 5353 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 5678 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 16384-16403 to any 1024-65535
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 5060
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 5190
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 5297-5298
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 5353
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 5678
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 1024-65535 to any 16384-16403
I do not have any redirecting going on because I would like to have a solution for all the computers on the internal network.
    Any clues?

So by opening up a couple of more ports, I have gotten an ichat 4 to ichat 4 video and audio session to work...
I noticed various blocked udp calls so I did this:
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any to any 36000-36999
${fwcmd} add pass udp from any 36000-36999 to any
and that allowed a leopard to leopard connection...don't know why as those ports are not discussed anywhere I have found...
but ichat 4 to ichat 3 doesn't work yet, any ideas?

  • Making Time Machine scan/back up a separate NAS

I'm slowly loosing the will to live in achieving what I believe should be achievable! Would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.
Like most people I'm paranoid about loosing my extensive picture and home movie library and I'm not yet comfortable with cloud solutions given the weeks and months it takes to upload it, let alone recover it.  So my preferred solution is a NAS system hidden and locked in a modified fire proof box attached to a powerline network adaptor in my home.  We've been using powerline adaptors for a while and the data rate is pretty good.
I have 2 x MacBook Air and the wife and I share our iPhoto and iTunes library's which are stored on a separate NAS (i use a TC to look after these) and accessed via Ethernet (they can be accessed wirelessly, but the fragility of iPhoto means we use only cabled connection when playing with pics)
In short my MBA's are nothing more than "interface" machines with all our content stored on 2 NAS and Dropbox.
Now here is my challenge, I obviously want to back up primarily my iPhoto and iTunes folders to my secure NAS, tucked away nice and cosy in its fireproof box.  But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC) holding iPhoto & iTunes) in order to back it up to my fireproof NAS which is also a 3TB TC.
Everytine I go onto TM it asks me to select the back up disk, I select my fireproof TC and it begins happily backing up my MBA, which while handy, really isn't that critical to me, given I'm using it only as an interface device to use and consume content rather than store.
I'm sure I'm not doing something and I've been all over google and various forums but I just got lost in messages about using TM to back up to a NAS.
In short, I need TM to scan TC 1 (iTunes & iPhoto libraries) and back it up to TC 2 (nuclear proof back up NAS).
    I'm running a July 2012 MBA with Lion 10.8.
Any help or advice would be really very much appreciated.
    Many thanks

But for the love of sweet Jesus I can't seem to get Time Machine to see it (the NAS (TC)
Unfortunately, Time Machine cannot back up a network drive.  The drive must be connected directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire.
Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper should be able to backup a network drive. Suggest that you confirm with their support folks about what you want to do.
Carbon Copy Cloner - Home        SuperDuper!

  • Social, Mail and Chat Apps as a paid service ???

    Dear Nokia Team,
I would like to express my disappointment concerning the access of the Social, Mail and Chat applications on the latest s40-based Nokia mobile phones on AIS One-2-Call network (Thailand):
I purchased a Nokia Asha 303 for my wife 2 weeks ago and tried to connect her new telephone to her Facebook account via the embed Social application provided by Nokia (not the browser). It always failed to work even though everything is fine on her mobile (3g/gprs connection works, balance is positive).
Our local Nokia Care Center could not find anything wrong concerning the functioning of my wife's mobile phone and advised us to contact our mobile phone carrier: AIS
After talking to an AIS customer service officer, we learned that Facebook access through Nokia's Social application is provided as a extra option which is charged 29 THB/week !
The following link will show you the offer the AIS officer told me about:
    http://www.ais.co.th/12call/chatnshare/en/nokia-cool-pack.aspx
I'm very upset. I feel like this isn't right:
I've been lured by the possibilities of this mobile phone to get easily connected to Facebook and Twitter with the Social App and access my account in just one finger tap from the home screen as it is clearly mentioned on your website:
    http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-asha-303/features#social
Well, unless I decide to subscribe to the above paid service, which is unlikey to happen, I won't be using this nice feature. This is very disappointing.
Besides, Nokia's Social app is the only application available for Facebook on this mobile phone. My only alternative is the web browser ! This is definitely not good news.
    Now I'd like to know:
Nokia, do you have an agreement with mobile phone carriers in Thailand ?
If so, how do you justify the existence of paid offers to access social network websites through your application while many of your competitors, if not all of them, offer free applications instead ?
If there is no agreement, then I recommend you to clear things up here in Thailand because operators are making money behind your back exploiting your own technology...

    MoE14,
I would suggest making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store to get your computer up and running again.

  • Shame on Adobe ! Installing cr@p behind the user's back!  :~(

These are comments originally left on the Forum Comments forum.
    First, my original question:
    Can anyone enlighten me?
How did a folder named just "Adobe", containing only something called "Acrobat.com.app"), end up in my root Applications folder?
Double clicking on "Acrobat.com.app" launches an installer that wants to install something called "AIR".  What is that and what is it needed for?
Then someone pointed me to a Wikipedia article.
    acresofgreen wrote:
…In the case of AIR:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_air…
    Here's my grateful reply:
Thank you much.  That's where the answer to the mystery was:
Adobe  AIR was included with all downloaded installations of Adobe Reader 9  (released in July, 2008), with no option for exclusion either in the  download or in the installation. As of August 2010, Adobe still bundles  Adobe AIR (along with the application Acrobat.com) with the Adobe Reader  9.3 download, with no option for exclusion, and the installation file for Adobe Reader 9.3 still installs Adobe AIR without user permission.
    Shame on Adobe!
I've never downloaded or installed either Acrobat.com or Adobe AIR.  It has to have been the Acrobat Reader 9.3 update for the Mac that installed that sucker on my Mac. I had certainly never seen it before.
That, on top of the inexcusable, abominably surreptitious "Growl" installed by Adobe behind my back, strengthens my resolve not to acquire any more Adobe products, free or otherwise.
What in blazes are the Adobe corporate folks thinking?
Here's the public admission regarding Adobe installing GROWL without the user's consent:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2964739#2964739
Post #2 in that thread reads [emphasis mine]:
"Yes, the installer team (over the strong objections of product teams) installs Growl."
Finally, my last comment over there:
"Macromedia-ization™" has been the worst thing that has ever happened to Adobe.
Wherever he may be, I sincerely hope Bruce Chizen suffers from unstoppable diarrhea till the end of his days on this planet.
    Wo Tai Lao Le
    我太老了

Thank so much for this very interesting info. I do not like the Idea of Any company, specially one that I am spending money on, to install their garbage on my computer.
They do not have my permission to install garbage in MY computer.
I hope more people can read this and uninstall Adobe's garbage.
    Thank you Again Tai Lao
