IChat MCX Preferences

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to auto configure iChat account settings with MCX? I have the managed client core services up in WGM\Preferences\Details which lists iChat-10.6. This allows account settings to be set in the always key. All the clients are 10.6 BTW.
This al works fine and is pushed out to the client, this shows up on the client in the System Profiler perfectly. Only problem is that ichat client ignores it?
If anyone can be of any help it would be very much appreciated as this is driving me round the bend!!!!!
I may be missing something simple as I'm not known for my brains!!

An Update.
I have tried setting the iChat accounts in the often and once MCX. Same problem!
So i re-imaged the server and client back to a fresh install (good job this is a test environment)!
Tried again and it dolled out the account settings to iChat perfectly, apart from having to manually enable the account on the client in iChat preferences.
Then on the client i deleted the account and logged out and back in. No account settings!! No matter what i did it would not reload the settings defined in the MCX. Further to this the MCX was then broken for all new accounts, it would not roll them out at all? This behaviour was replicated on each client i tried it on!!
Now I'm really stumped?

  • IChat privacy preferences??

Hi. I've been using iChat for a couple of years on this computer. I haven't altered any settings (to my knowledge!).
Today I tried to use it but the person was listed as offline - but they were online and on their iChat I was showing up as offline.
I tried to send a text chat - the text chat window opened but when I went to send the text I got the message "Your privacy preferences are set so they prevent you from communicating with this person"
There was no connection problem with my internet as I was able to send emails and connect to web pages.
Really strange. Would appreciate any advice. I haven't changed internet providers. I upgraded my plan the other day but I don't know if this would have changed anything.
    Cheers

    Hi,
Have you checked your Block list ?
It is in iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts > AIM/Apple account > Security Settings
The Allow options can also effect things.
If this appears to be OK and you have managed to access the Preferences go to the Server Settings and change the port to 443 (Some modem and routers do not like the fact iChat uses port 5190 on TCP to login and UDP to get some Buddy List feedback and certain Text chats and File Sending) You have to be Off Line to do this.
If that does not work go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences (Spotlight does not look in here so you have to click through the folders.
    Delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat
Let us know how you get on.
    A Note:
By default the Apple Discussions set your status to Subscribe to every thread you post in.
You get an Email for every new post that is made.
It is the same for the Original Poster.
But he will now be getting emails about a thread he has marked as Answered.
The Terms of Use do allow for "Me too" posts but also strongly suggest starting your own tread.
As even "Me too" posts can actually be different it also means I can end up having about five conversations in some threads (I struggle after this number) so it is worth checking if a thread Is Finished before posting.
    Hope this helps.

  • IChat Font Preferences

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to change the sender font size while leaving their font type as it is.

    Hi,
    Yes.
In iChat go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Messages
Here you can change your Font Choice, the Font Colour, the Background (Bubble) Colour for yourself and (Over-ride) those of the Incoming Messages.
In Choosing your Font you can change the size.
    NOTE:
Your Buddy will only see your Font choice if they have the Font themselves.
It will tend to default to Helvetica if they do not have it.

  • Managed (mcx) preferences ONLY works for Computer Groups (Lists)

AD Server 2008 R2 with extended schema.
Macs (ML 10.8.5) bound to AD, mcx settings were created for Computer Groups , User Groups (AD security groups), Users
but ONLY Computer Lists settings apply on the local machine (ANY, not just one)
I can see it with mcxquery
Anybody has an idea why that could be & how to sort it, so it DOES apply to user, user groups as well?
    Seb

Turned out that my user existed as LOCAL user (same name/pass as AD)
In that way ONLY Machine MCX applies
Renaming local user & login with AD user applies Preferences correctly

  • IChat issue: no idle/privacy preferences

Did Apple do away with privacy/idle preferences? I am running iChat 4.0.8, and when I go away but stay at the computer, or come back after screen saver initiates, I get a barrage of IMs, which leads me to believe my friends who are running AIM can see when I am idle or around.
I remember iChat used to be able to control privacy/idle preferences, but I can't find the option or help topic anywhere in the program or online. I can't be the only one experiencing this issue...
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
The issue I spoke of that Other Buddies would see you as On-line when you had an Away Message up has been resolved at the AIM Servers some weeks ago.
There is a Setting in the General Section of iChat's Preferences that can be set to NOT show you are Idle. (your Buddies never see the Amber blob next to your Name).
Also in the General Section if you use the Menu Bar Option you can then Set "When I Quit iChat, Set my Status to Off Line"
This stops iChat firing up when it is closed down but you are on the computer when Off Line Messages get sent (You appear to your Buddies as if On line with the last Status you set).
Using the top right of this page http://download.aim.com/client/70 you can login to AIM with an AIM or Apple ID and then go to your account page and set that you do Not get Off Line Messages (I must admit to having an Issue with this in Snow Leopard despite setting it and the General Section Off Line on Quit item).
There has never been an option to set a Non response/non acceptance of IMs whilst your computer is Idle.

There is no General section in iChat 1 http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichat1/ichat1pics/Preference%20Panes/iChat1 PrivacyPrefs.html It only has the Don't let people see I am Idle option.

  • Ichat preference window not showing up

I want to create a new account with ichat, and hook it up to my gmail/google account.
However, when I open ichat the main window doesn't show up. I can see the menu bar with file, edit, view, buddies, video, format, window, and help. I tried bringing all windows to front but only my Bonjour list shows up. I never really used the program, but must have set up an account at some point even though I have no contacts. If I could just figure out how to create a new account that would be great, how can I get the main window to reappear when I open ichat?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
It is possible to Start up iChat the first time and click through all the Screens and you will have iChat started, possibly with only Bonjour set up.
It sounds like you have either done this or have any other Buddy List you have turned Off/Logged out.
    1) In the iChat Menu itself you have Accounts (Sub Menu)
Does this List anything other than the Bonjour Account ?
    2) Go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts pane.
In the List here on the left is anything listed other than the Bonjour Account ?
In either case select the account (In 1) it will add a tick and Log the account In.
In 2) You need to go to the Account Info tab and select the "Use this Account" box to Login.
If there is No Account you will need to do 3)
    3) Click the Plus Button at the bottom of the list in 2)
Providing you have a Screen Name ready you can choose from the top drop down the account type it is and enter the details required.
    a) Free AIM Names from here
    b) Free @Mac.com Name here
    c) You can register for a MobileMe trial but it required a Credit card upp front AND you have to Discontinue it yourself before the 60 days is up or you Get Charged (Trial Button is top right).
    d) You can use any Existing Google Mail ID once you have gone to your Google Account page and turned On the Talk Option
    e) You can use any Jabber ID you have. Most likely this is going to be gained in a third Party App as most Jabber Serves don't have Web Page registrations.

  • Mic and Cam won't work on iChat

    Hello
I have a new mac pro, so I am a beginner! However, I know that the cam is working and that there is a function mic because when I can see it on My Display iSight. I see me, and I see the audio. But on iChat the camera and phone icons are not green and I cannot use them.
Moreoever, in google talk I do have a camera icon, but when I try and call people on google talk they cannot hear me! I can't find anything about the mic anywhere.
Please, anything you can do to help would be awesome.

    Hi Cathjoy,
IF in System Preferences > Sound you can see the Sound Blue Bar in the Input Tab move at least half way (preferably 3/4) - then you need to check ichat in a couple/three of places.
    1) In the View Menu of iChat make sure "Show Video Status" (And Audio) is selected (Ticked). (this shows the green Audio and Video Icons)
    2) In the Video Menu of iChat again both Mic and Camera Enabled item should have a tick next to it (Selecting toggles it On or Off)
    3) In the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video section there should be a Microphone drop down and your choice here should match the one in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab and you should see the Green bar here move when you talk.
When doing 1) make sure the correct Buddy List is the "Front" Window (Your own icon may still display as a Video one if another Buddy List is set to Video in iChat 4 and iChat 5)

  • Jabber and Gmail Don't Work on my iChat

Hello! I bought my Mac in August 2009. When I first bought it, gmail and Jabber worked iChat. But shortly after, it stopped working. It hasn't worked since then. Whenever I would try to create a Jabber or Gmail account on iChat, the words Jabber and Gmail would be grayed out and un-clickable. I recently upgraded to software version 10.6.6 and Jabber and Gmail still don't work on iChat. They're not grayed out anymore, they're just not there! Aim, Bonjour, MobileMe, and Mac.com accounts all work on my iChat.
Additionally, I took my Mac to the Genius Bar and they couldn't fix it!
Does anyone know how to fix my problem?
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
Sounds like you have Parental Controls turned On for the Mac User Account you are using.
I take it you are not seeing 5 choices in the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > + Button > New account Pane ?
The Start Up Screens do have the AIM login options (AIM, @Mac.com and MobileMe) on one pane/Screen and then the Bonjour option and the Jabber/Google options on another Screen/pane.
IF you are not logged on the Computer as the Admin Account the Mac User Account can have Parental Controls activated.
(System Preferences > Accounts - the account will be listed as "Managed"
Limiting iChat in Parental Controls stops you adding any Buddy List (Setting up a new account).
In iChat 4/OS 10.5.x Jabber and Bonjour are disabled completely (Just Bonjour in iChat 5/OS 10.6.x)
Your symptoms as described, if we are talking about the iChat Preferences way of Adding a New Account, does not seem to quite match the scenario I have described about Parental Controls, as you seem to still have access to setting up a new AIM name.
Did the Tech guy delete the .plists for iChat ?
Did he/she delete them 'En Masse' or one at a time with an iChat Restart in between ?

  • I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?

    Question:-
I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time or other portal and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?
    Answer:-
For a Name to work in iChat it has to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Only Apple IDs from the @mac.com ending names registered here  and the Mobileme (@Me.com ending) names are Valid with the AIM service as well as being Apple IDs
(I am still working on info about registering with iCloud at the moment but if this does give you an @Me.com email it may well be a valid AIM name as well)
    NOTES:-
The @mac.com page works by linking an external (Non Apple) email with a @mac.com name.
This External Email cannot be one linked to an Existing Apple ID (you have to use a second email or register at AIM )
The options at AIM are to use your existing email or create new name and link the existing only for Password recovery
MobileMe (@me.com ending names) were valid Emails addresses, Apple IDs AND a Valid AIM Screen Name
@mac.com names look like emails but are only Apple IDs and iChat/AIM Valid Screen Names.
The AIM registration page seems to be pushing you to register [email protected] This is relatively new and I have not followed through the pages to find out if it a valid AIM email (Previously you could register a name without an @whatever.com suffix)

    Question:-
So I have my current [email protected] email in iChat as I thought as I had linked that to an Apple ID it was a Valid iChat Name.  It keeps coming up with a UserName or Password Invalid message.  What do I do next ?
    Answer:-
    Open iChat
Go to the Menu under the iChat name in the Menu Bar and then Preferences and then Accounts in the new window.
Commonly written as iChat > Preferences > Accounts as directions/actions to take.
If it displays with a Yellow running name in the list you have a choice.
Either register it at AIM (I would use a different password to the ISP Login) and then change the password only in iChat  (It may take you to confirm any Confirmation email from AIM first) in iChat > Preferences > Accounts
Or you register a new Name at AIM (Or at @mac.com) and enter that (details below)
If you have a Blue Globe name  (@mac.com) that will not Login the chances are that it the password that is the issue.
Apple lets you create longer passwords than can be used with the AIM Servers.
Change the Password at iForgot to no more than 16 characters.
Then change the password in iChat as details above.
Adding a new Account/Screen Name in iChat (that is valid with the AIM servers)
    Open iChat if not launched.
Go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Click the Add ( + )  Button at the bottom of the list.
Choose in the top item drop down either @Mac.com or AIM depending on what you registered
Add the name (with @mac.com the software will add the @mac.com bit)
Add in the password.  (If you don't add it now iChat will ask you each time you open it)
    Click Done.
The Buddy List should open (New Window)
The Accounts part of the Preferences should now have the new name and you should be looking at the details.
You can add something in the Description line which will then title the Buddy List (Useful when you have two or more names) and make it show up as that in the iChat Menu > Accounts and the Window Menu of iChat when logged in.
You can then highlight any other Account/Screen Name you don't want to use and use the Minus ( - ) Button to delete it.

  • My iChat icon will not open when I click on it.... what should I do?

I've tried clicking the iChat icon on my Doc many times, and on my top toolbar on the top of the screen, it says iChat, as if the program is open.... yet there are no windows open....... BIT OF A PICKLE.

    Hi,
You can get to this state two ways.
    1) On starting iChat the first time you click through the Start Up Screen with entering any Screen Name or ID info and not turning on the Bonjour Option.
    2) Having set up an Screen Name in ichat (Or just Enabled the Bonjour option) you have then used the red button which has closed the Window but not quit iChat
You have then Quit iChat.  iChat remembers where the Buddy List windows were when you Quit even if they are "Hidden"
    Lets start with 2)
In the iChat Menu go to the accounts sub item
Is anything listed here ?  (Bonjour at least should be)
Un-ticked items are Not Logged in and so Buddy Lists will not show.
Selecting an Item will toggle the Tick and Log the Account In (Selecting it again removes the tick and logs out)
If an Item is Tick but there is no Window then it is "Hidden"
Now go to the Window Menu.
Any Logged in accounts also get listed here with Keystrokes next to them (CMD/Apple key plus a number)
Either select the item or use the Keystrokes
Clicking and Holding the DOCK icon should also give you an option to reveal any Logged in Buddy List.
    Re 1)
If you did not set up an account you should be able to go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
The Bonjour item is always there in the list and can be Enabled (Use this account) on the right (Account Info tab)
The Bonjour Buddy List will only show Buddies if other iChat Users are on your LAN with iChat On and Bonjour Enabled.
You cannot add Buddies to this list (It will display their Name as they appear in their Address Book on their Computer
At the bottom of the list are two buttons. A Plus one to Add An Account/Screen name and a Minus one to Delete Accounts  (You cannot delete the Bonjour one)
Clicking the add Button opens an new pane
The top item of this is a drop down to select either AIM, @Mac.com or MobileMe (All log in to AIM) and below the line the Jabber options of a Jabber server or GoogleTalk
Selecting either MobileMe or @mad.com and then pressing the "Get an iChat Account" button will take you to a web page (In  Browser) to Register for an @mac.com name
(In iChat 5 the AIM option points to the previous AIM page for Registration but this has moved)
With Jabber or Google Talk you will have to have a Name first
You can of course get your AIM based name first and just fill in the details.
Once you have a name and filled it in with a password you can click Done.
    NOTES
Registering an @mac.com name is applying for an Apple ID (Automatic)
The Password Strength indicator should be ignored as the AIM Servers can only cope with password up to 16 characters long.
Part of the process means you have to list an existing Email address.
This cannot be one already associated with an Apple ID you may already have (Such as using an ISP Email to register to post in Communities)
In Setting up an Account/Screen name in iChat you don't have to enter the password
If you do not iChat will ask you each time.
This at least stops people who get access to your computer logging in to your details.
These iChat 4 How Tos offer a longer explanation (Use the lower menu under the iChat 4 How to title: Work left to right)

  • I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5 - How do I fix this ?

I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5
Many people are reporting that they cannot add Buddies to either iChat 4 or iChat 5.
The Symptoms are that the Buddy appears in the Buddy List and then does the "Brightening/Fading" cycle but fails to be anywhere in the list including Off Line Buddies.
To Show Off Line Buddies, highlight the Buddy list to bring to the "front".
Then go to the View Menu and Enable Show Off Line Buddies.
(there is also an Option to display these in a separate Group).
There can be many causes and I will attempt to deal with then in the order that they are most likely.
    A) The Contact is already in the Address Book.
When Adding a Buddy via the use of the + Sign at the Bottom of the Buddy List (Then Add Buddy) or invoking it from the Buddies menu a drop down appears to slide down out of the Buddy List Header area
In this slide out/drop down, you get the chance to Add the Screen Name and then the First Name Last Name details of the Buddy.
iChat checks the Address Book and if the First Name, Last Name items do not match any contact in the Address Book already then the Buddy will be added to the Buddy list.
As the Address Book does not allow two contacts to have the same name they will not be added to the iChat Buddy List if the name exists already.
In iChat 3 and earlier there was an Error Message that popped up saying there was Feedbag Error
    See here for More
Note: AIM Protocols call Lists "Feedbags". Contents (Buddies) are "Food" and of course Food is kept in Feedbags.
The Address Book is one Feedbag in this case and the Screen Name (only) Buddy List held on the AIM Server is the other.
The Software puts the two together for Display purposes
    The Fix.
    Either:
    1) Add them as Screen Name only
    2) Use the Arrow head at the end of the Last Name line to open the Address Book and pick the Contact.
    3) Open the Address Book and Edit their Card to Add the Screen Name, then drag them from the Name column to the iChat Buddy List.
    4) During any type of Chat use the item in the Buddies Menu to Add the person (it will display their Screen Name in Dark text if not in the Buddy List - Then item 2 can also be used)
    B) Parental Controls
There are similar Symptoms if the Mac User Account is subject to Parental Controls.
If the Mac User Account on the computer is not an Admin account it is a Standard or Managed one
A Managed one has Parental Controls Enabled.
There is a Tab for Mail and iChat.
If it is turned on for iChat then all buddies are Blocked initially (in iChat 4 Jabber and Bonjour Buddy List cannot be used.)
Adding AIM valid Screen Names (AIM, Those with either @mac.com or @me.com endings) to the allow List Unblocks those Buddies and they will show in the Buddy List as On or Off line
    The Fix.
In this case if you are the Managed account you have to get the Admin account to add the Buddy to the Buddy allowed list in Parental Controls.
    Exception
There is a very large exception.
Due to the fact that the way Parental Controls blocks names until they appear in the Allow List there can be a problem if testing the same iChat Details in a Test Account.
Lets say you are the Admin User on the Mac.
You set up a second Mac User Account called Test.
In this you set up iChat with the same details (Screen name) you use in your Main Mac User Account.
You then test Parental Controls by turning it On and setting the iChat Limit option.
Then you add to the allow List one or two AIM valid names.
You check iChat and find they are the only Buddies that show up.
It works, so you return to your main Mac User Account and discover that most of your Buddies are missing.
On checking the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Security Tab you find the Allow Specific People option is Enabled and the list only includes those Buddies you set in Parental Controls.
Choosing allow All does not seem to bring back the Buddies even if you Log out of the Test Mac User Account.
    The Fix Here
Is to Disable all the Parental Control Settings again (Remove names from any list) before Logging out of the Test Mac User Account.
The cause is partly to do with the Setting in iChat > Preferences > General Section that reads "When I quit iChat, Set the Status to Off Line" which is not the default - leaving a partial login for Off Line Messaging. As a consequence your Buddy List is constantly being told to block certain Screen Names.
A Variation on this is if you have Two Log-ins of your Screen Name from either different apps or computers.
Altering the Buddy List in one effects the other login. The computer or app that was logged in first take precedence.
    C) Adding Buddies as the wrong type (In Buddy List - But always Off Line)
This applies more to iChat 4 than it does to iChat 5
At the Add Buddy Screen/Slide in iChat 4 you have to choose if the Buddy is an AIM, @mac. or MobileMe name in a drop down.
The software shows the @mac.com or @me.com endings in grey in the Screen Name text field and adds this for you.
This can lead to Buddies being added as the wrong type as in ralphjohnsr added as [email protected] etc.
It can also lead to people being added with 2 @ symbols in the Screen Name ([email protected]@mac.com) and iChat not always telling you this is not allowed.
In both iChat 4 and 5, as Jabber IDs/Screen Names also look like Email Addresses, we have to also consider whether AIM names have been added to a Jabber List or Jabber Names added to AIM valid Lists.
    D) Plain old Typos
Here I am talking about misreading someone's Screen Name and typing that in (Such as receiving and email with a Screen Name in it and typing the letter O for 0 (zero).)
And of course, just plain typing mistakes.
The Fix for C) and D)
The Buddy in this case will be in the Buddy List but will always be Off line
Highlight the Buddy with one click.
Do a Get Info (Apple()/Command(⌘) key and I key together) and their Info card will show up.
    Correct as Required.

  • I want to delete my ichat account and make a new one

i just got my mac and made a ichat account. i think i messed uo because i had used two different emails. i tried to add my friend but everytime it said waiting for authorization and it keep saying i was offline. i was wondering if there was any was i could fix this problem. PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!

    Hi,
You haven't added any Spec for your machine or iChat version but you seem to imply it is new so I will presume Lion and iChat 6
iChat can use  4 types of names and some of those have sub-categories if you like.
In the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts you should have at least the Bonjour Option in the list even if you have no other accounts.
This is used between Macs on your LAN.
If they are using iChat and have Bonjour Enabled then you will see their Name as they call themselves in their Address Book. iChat will broadcast your Name as at the My Card in your Address Book (Head and Shoulders icon card).
iChat can join the AIM service and these can be one of three (sub) type of  Names, although the Buddy list can have Buddies of each type.
You can register at AIM themselves, with @Mac.com and use a MobileMe name (Ending @Me.com)
Generically the Account/Buddy List is referred to as an AIM list as @Mac.om and MobileMe names are Valid AIM Screen Names
iChat can use Jabber Names/IDs. These include Google and there is an Option with iChat 4 onwards to use this a a separate sub category when adding an Account to iChat (In creating a BUddy List)
A Jabber ID can add Goolge Buddies or a Google Buddy List can have Jabber Buddies.
iChat 6 adds the ability to use a Yahoo ID as well.
Although the Yahoo for Mac App (it is still in Beta) can add MSN contacts this cannot be done in iChat.
    Adding Buddies.
In an "AIM" List you can add Buddies by clicking the Plus icon at the Bottom of the Buddy List and selecting Add Buddy
You type the Buddy's name in full (As in [email protected], or [email protected] or the AIM name that the persons tells you (it may not be an Email) )
Allowing or Blocking a Buddy is then done in the iChat Menu Preferences > Accounts > Security tab.
With a Jabber/Google List  you have to Authorize the Buddy as you Add them. A Person has to be in th Buddy List rather than allowing or Blocking them later.
To be more precise a Request to Authorize is sent to the Buddy and they either Accept or Deny.
In iChat 3 through 5 this needed to be done when the Buddy was On Line as iChat does not repeat the Request.   From what you post it seems this has not changed in iChat 6
(Other Jabber apps continually send the request until such time as the person actually sees the request and does something about it.)
So it may not be that the Name is "Wrong" or that you have set up your account incorrectly.
I have no info on setting up a Yahoo account at present or how Buddies are added for Allow/Block Authorise or not.
What you cannot do is use an AIM Account to add Google or Jabber buddies to (Or vice versa) even though on the whole the naming formats (email Style IDs) applies to both.
AIM Registrations ask for a second email for Password recovery
@mac.com Registrations require a second email to Verify the Apple ID you are creating (It happens to be an Valid AIM screen Name as well  (@mac.com look like email but are not so you cannot verify them back through @mac.com as it were).
The Waiting for Authorisation message only comes from a Google Talk ID or a Jabber Buddy List.
It will show if you add an AIM valid Name or if the Buddy is Off Line and not seeing the Request to answer it.
    Example iChat 4 pic
(not sure why I had these to options crossed out but I may have been talking about iChat 3 when I used it)
Obviously iChat 6 has Yahoo as well.

  • The big iChat problems. Audio/Video (now completely broken in 10.7.3), the "not-authorized" problem

So, I am running iChat on OS X Lion 10.7.3 on an early-2011 MBP 13'' . These problems have been here for a while, though (I got my comp with 10.7.0). I have AIM/GMail/Yahoo connected..
One problem is the issue of non-authorized people. There is a list of "not authorized" people that I have to scroll past in my "offline" section of iChat buddies before I actually get to the real offline contacts. Big note here: All these people have the address (something)@aol.com. These contacts have come up as a result of my gmail connection. You see, a few months ago Gmail and AIM did this chat unification process where @aol.com contacts can be just added into Gmail for chatting. These @aol.com copies come up asking for an invite when the REAL AIM address person talks to me. The invites leave once I press decline, but then they stay on my list as not authorized. If I delete these "not-authorized" copies, the invites will come up again and the cycle will repeat. It is a nuisance considering how much of these false contacts are on my list.
Second problem is video/audio chat in general. This issue really applies on AIM/Yahoo—there is nothing for Gmail because people usually use the web interface which simply doesn't work with iChat video/audio. If the people used Google talk, the issue written below would probably come up.
See, what happens is that…(now in 10.7.3), video/audio chat is simply broken, simple as that. My contacts always tell me that an error has occurred when trying to accept my video chat invite. It simply doesn't work. They are using AIM desktop in most cases. When it DID used to work (to a very limited extent, I'll say; it was hit or miss earlier pre 10.7.3, now it's just miss), it was just video but NO audio. They could see/hear me, I could only see them. When I did audio chats, they hear me, I..don't hear them (so audio chats were pointless). The only case where this problem doesn't happen is where it's Mac to Mac, iChat to iChat. VERY limited in use of audio/video chat, if you ask me.

    Hi,
If AIM contacts have been added to your Google Buddy List then I would login to Google and remove them from there  (the iGoogle or GoogleMail web pages will show the Chat option)
Whilst they are still in the List then the Authorization request will probably be resent (In this case it is probably being generated by the method Google are using to add the AIM names as iChat only sends it once).
Google/Jabber Video chats is only iChat to iChat and so is Yahoo with iChat 6.
The Yahoo App streams Video which People can be allowed to see and Audio is added in as an Audio Chat.
The connection Process is not the same and iChat/AIM
Jabber and Google use Jingle to Connect (in fact Google's version is not that compatible with other Jabber apps).
This means iChat to the Standalone PC app  or any Web Browser using the Google Video Plug-in (PC or Mac) or to any Jabber app that is using a Google ID (or a Jabber ID) will not work.
On the iChat to AIM on a PC.
This has always been a bit of a hit and miss affair.
Some people have no trouble but other spend ages trying to set things up and never find the solution.
This is the Original Users Tip  (up to about AIM5.9)
A "replacement" for that tip that has not made it across yet.
I have yet to try Video to the Web Login version that is now on offer.
However I would limit the Bandwidth in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (possibly try 200kbps for 1-1 chats) as you will not know the interent speed available to the Buddy if they are using the web login.
    Comparisons
When you compare iChat actual functions to what you would like it to do it can appear to be limited.
On the basis that you would want your IM app to be able to have Buddies from other services listed in a Buddy list (combined) or Lists which apps do you know of can do that and Video to some of them ?
Adium and ProteusX can both have Buddies from the major Services ina  Buddy List but don't do Audio or Video.
Yahoo and MSN both allow the other's Buddies in the list but I am not sure about Video or Audio chats
They cannot connect to Jabber or AIM buddies even for text chats.
Jabber does depend on the server you use and whether that does Transports for you to have text chats with other services.
    Instructions for iChat.
Mercury IM is a JAVA version of MSN and still has not got to Audio and Video
    Similar for aMSN
    Gizmo5 and YakforFree both died...
Skype is Cross Platform  but is only 1-1 in Video chat.  (cost extra for 3 and 4 way chats)
Yahoo had dropped support for their Mac version now iChat has the Yahoo option  (you can still download it  - IT being the beta it has been for  years).

  • How can i downgrade from iChat 5.0.3 to iChat 3.1.9 ??

I have a problem here in the office.
We have lots of Apple computers, come old as eMac 700Mhz to brand new iMac... of course MAC OS X system in them are 10.4.11 to 10.5.6
In most of them iChat is in version 3.1.9, but is a case there is a iChat 5.0.3 version!? ***!? That version seems to be incompatible with the rest as is unable to send files in chat, transmission starts but suddently crashes (Unable to recive file, transmission ended, probably had been canceled... or something like that).
I had been looking for iChat support but there is no way to downgrade the 5.0.3 iChat version to 3.1.9! Nor download only 3.1.9 to reinstall it!
I would apreciate any help, in how to downgrade or how to fix 5.0.3 file send incompatibility!
    Thanks a lot.
    B.

    Hi,
Each version of iChat and in fact each version increment point is linked to a specific level of the OS.
Broadly speaking this means that iChat 3 will only run in Tiger (OS X 10.4.x)
iChat 3.1.9 is needed when the OS gets to OS X 10.4.11
The Increments come along with the OS Updates  (Hence the need to use a Combo Installer after a reinstall to Update any Install Disk version of iChat to the current OS level).
    iChat 4 goes with OS X 10.5
iChat 5 with Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.
Whilst support parts and apps are in similar places they are not all the same and not always in the same place. Again these are compatible with that OS and that iChat version.
That leaves getting them all to work together.
What sort of Screen Names or ID are you using ?
AIM logins (AIM, @mac.com or MobileMe valid names) are going to be best.
iCloud issued @mac.com names will not work in iChat 5 or lower  (Only work in iChat 6 and Messages beta)
Various Jabber servers do have issues now and then even the GoogleTalk one.
If you  are using an Apple Server and have iChat Server running then you may need to open the Jabber Proxy65 port (7777)
    See this Document
If you have later Macs then go to the System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab and make sure iChat is listed in the items allowed  (You may need to open the Advanced Button and Enable the "Allow Signed Software" option).
If you have earlier Macs with a System Preferences > Firewall items do this
Work the little arrows above the pics to move on to the next step.
Also make sure that these ports are open in your routing device.
Use UPnP if it has it.
IF it is An AIM login go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Deselect the "Use this Account" to Log Out (Account info tab)
Go to the Server Setting tab
    Change the port to 443
Log back in again  (Some Routers/Modems don't like Logging in and doing File Transfers on the same port (even though they are different Protocols.  This moves the Login port.)

  • IChat AV problems with Comcast as ISP

I've been a user of iChat AV for several years, and in the past 6-8 months it's stopped working as well as it used to. I routinely used it to connect from California to Florida and Indiana, and now I get about one minute or less of decent audio and video in a session before one or both ends starte breaking up and freezing. I've complained to Comcast about this, and have even sent them netstat info showing what seems to be peering problems between them and AT&T (large steps up in hop times across that boundary, in both directions). All they've done about it is send techs to change all the cables in my house, which is nice but does not fix the problem. I seem to have good bandwidth - 6 to 10 Mbit/sec - and other internet functions are fine, but video chatting is miserable (audio-only chatting still works ok). Can anyone advise me how to handle this? It makes iChat AV unusable for video.

I am having this EXACT same problem! I am able to iChat with my mother who still has DSL. But I can no longer successfully iChat with my brother and we both have Comcast broadband Internet with VoIP phone service. I either get several error messages such as "not enough Bandwidth" or it works for a minute and breaks up and pixelates.
I have searched the Internet high and low for an answer. RalphUK has posted amazing and helpful amounts of information about how to resolve issues with iChat. I have followed ALL of them, including opening certain ports, testing my bandwidth several times a day (it's fine), changing Quicktime and iChat bandwith preferences to several things, trying to re-cycle my Airport and Comcast modem, calling Comcast to complain ( the customer service is absolutely clueless!). At this point, I don't know what to do except switch back to DSL and ditch my broadband Comcast Internet. I also think the residential VoIP with Comcast maybe part of the issue. I have also read that Tiger 10.4.10 has bugs in it that cause this issue.
It is really aggravated that after years of being able to use iChat, now I cannot. Any help or info about Comcast's role in this would be helpful.
