IChat Messages

If anyone could help... recently when using ichat, normally new messages popup on my screen and on the ichat icon on the dock a number comes up for how many new messages there are. also the tabs on the ichat boxes have a snippet of what the person is saying or message. the problem i am having seems to be that the number never disappears on the dock. normally when you click the new message the number goes away and the snippet of what was said on the tab also disappears but it is not. So right now while being on ichat the number in the dock increases while im online and does not go down unless i exit out of a conversation box. If anyone knows how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated. i believe this only began happening when the new software came out but im not positive.

Are you using iChat 4 and the Collect All chats in to one Window to see "tabs" ?
Or are you using Chax (An iChat Add-On) to do it for you ?
It is possible to dismiss a window using the Red button top left of a window.
In iChat this normally Ends a Chat.
However in some cases it hides a Window, as it would if you did it to the Buddy List.
This means that if you have used or use Remember open Chats Across Launch you could have a Hidden Chat.
I would turn On Remember Chats and turn it Off again.
I would also check the Window Menu to see if it tells you about any Other items that are Active.
I would turn off the mechanism you are using to collect the chats into one window and recheck the items above and see if anything pops up in list.
Failing this I would delete com.apple.ichat.plist from your Home Folder/Library/Preferences. DO this last as you will have to reset everything that is not default that you have changed in the iChat Preferences (You also lose Saved Status Messages)

Buddies with multiple accounts on iChat/Messages

Ok, this seems like it should be an easy one, but I can't seem to figure it out. There are a few buddies that have two or three accounts. For instance, my sister has a gChat and AIM account. iChat/Messages groups both accounts into one (which is a really nice space-saving feature), but when I double-click on her name to chat, iChat automatically picks one for me (usually AIM).
Is it possible to choose which service you want to use to chat to someone with more than one account? It should be a lot more intuitive, but I just can't seem to figure it out. Anyone know?

Hi,
Once you have the Chat window Open go to the "To" spot.
Her name will be a drop down and offer her other "names" and your "From" options (it is possible that not all combinations will work.).

I have an iphone 4. Recently I cannot receive pictures or receive normal texts. All my texts come in as ichat messages. Even if it's from another iphone. I've reset and followed the support page instructions... still having problems. Thanks!

I also have a similar issue since upgrading from the 4s to the 5s.
The issue I have is, issue number 2:" If I do receive a text message/iMessage notification, it disappears within 5-10 minutes before I can even check (no other notifications disappear)"
Which also consists of the same events in the last message from monicash "So for example, if i get a text while sleeping... i wake up in the morning to check my notifications and there is nothing there because it disappeared (even though there should be a notification there with my current settings that are ON)."

Incoming iChat messages are in Chinese?!?!

I can send out messages in iChat in English, but everyone who replies to me comes out in Chinese. I have no idea why this is occurring, the font slect is correct and my language select is English. Can anyone help me?

As you rightly say deleting the .plist will revert the files to the default settings which will list Helvetica when examined in Property List Editor if you have Delveloper Tools installed.
However as Tom says Helvetica Fractions causes problems at a deeper level then would be fixed by this deletion.
There once was a post about this that included a link to a screen shot. It may have been so long ago that it was in iChat 2 and may have been acrchived off before November 14th 2005. It might pay to search to see if it it still there.

The Search for Helvetica Fractions does not make it obvious to me at present looking at some. I have sorted by date and looked at the older ones with no luck.
Tom may have a link as he was involved then which is how I learned of this.
The search does highlight how often this comes up.

My ichat messages are posted in gibberish!

This morning when I went to respond to an iChat, I couldn't read it because it was in some gibberish font (weird symbols). Then I tried typing a message, which I could read fine, until I posted it. My post was also in gibberish. I can't figure out what the deal is or how to fix it. Help!

Why are adium users seeing my ichat messages as xml?

This started recently. As far as I can tell only Adium users are seeing the messages as XML. I have not changed anything in my iChat setup, and as far as I can tell there is not a new, broken version of Adium that they're all using. This is happening for Jabber accounts.
They're seeing XML like so:

Hi,
Basically the Balloon and other IM background data is sent as a sort of HTML package (obviously coded in XML)
You can try going to the View Menu > Message and changing the format/Style
Text seems to work well.
This used to come up in AIM 5.5 as well some time ago. (It could not recognise the Style Info)
This is the first I have seen regarding a Jabber Message.

I can't send photos through iChat/Messages?

Hello! I have a MacBook Pro and I can't seem to send photos through iChat to my friends. I am able to receive photos, though. I can drag a photo into the message box and I can click send and it looks as if I've successfully sent the photo. However, after a few seconds, the message bubble becomes blank and a picture is no longer there and my friend tells me she can't see anything. I've updated to Mountain Lion but I still can't send photos through Messages. Does anyone have any idea why? Thank you in advance!

The Messages app in Mountain Lion is a fusion of iChat (which uses AIM Screen Names and Jabber IDs to create Buddy Lists) and iMessages from the iOS side of things.
iMessages can be sent if you register your Apple ID for iMessages when opening Messages for the first time.
The same Apple ID is then used on your iOS devices (iPads, iPhones and some iPod Touch devices) so that you can sync the conversations you are having.
iChat is /was an app in Lion and earlier Mac OS version that could join the AIM or Jabber Service (And the Yahoo service in iChat 6 in Lion).
In those versions Buddy List were displayed by default.
In Messages the default is to display any Non iMessage Accounts (Seen in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts.) as one list, which can be brought to the front by the Keystrokes CMD + 1 keys together (See Window Menu)
You can separate the Buddy lists by going to Message Menu > Preferences > General section and unticking the items that say about gathering accounts into one list.

As you can see I have an Account callled Google talk (And another that logs in to Jabber.me)
The Names shown here are what you enter in to the Description field in Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts.
If you enter nothing and have one account that logs in to AIM and another that logs in to Google the Account Buddy List window will get titled "AIM Buddy List" and Jabber Buddy List as Google run a Jabber server.
If you have more, like I do, of both sorts then they take on the Screen Name or ID of the account if you don't fill in the Description field.
(The Partially Blocked out one is doing this as it is an AIM registered Name)
If your Apple ID happens to be your Google Mail ID and you have set it up for iMessages it also needs setting up for the "iChat" Google Talk side (it may be already there if updating from Lion)
However you cannot send iMessages to your Google Buddies or vice versa - sending IMs from your Google Buddy list to Contact's Apple IDs
So make sure the Messages window is saying you are using iMessages if talking to Contacts or your IM account type (or name/ID) if using Buddy lists.
If your Apple ID can also be used with the AIM or Jabber services then double check what you have set up in Messages > Preferences > Accounts and which you ware using.

Stop new incoming ichat message open a window in foreground

hi there
When iChat receives a new incoming message from a buddy it opens a new chat window in the foreground even if you are running an application in full screen like VMware, and even if you are running in a different Spaces window. Is there a way of stopping this behaviour?

IChat / Messages refuses correctly entered Yahoo password

I have been using iChat (now Messages) to chat via my Yahoo! ID for as long as I can remember with no issues.
I changed my yahoo.com password yesterday and now I can't access Yahoo! chat via the Messages app. Accessing Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. is not an issue ... but chat will not work.
Trying to log into Yahoo chat via Messages now just asks me for my password over and over even though I enter it correctly each time.

On and on it goes from there. I've already tried the following:
-Using my user ID with and without @yahoo.com attached to the end.
-Accessing my keychain, completely deleting all yahoo associated items and re-entering the new password fresh
-Completely removing Yahoo! from my Mail, Contacts & Calendars area and re-installing it fresh
-Manually typing in the password (vs. copy & paste)
-Telling Messages to remember the password in the keychain or not
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,
Despite all my years with iChat I can't say I have ever joined or created a Jabber Chatroom.
However it does look more like a Time Stamp issue than anything else.
iChat and Messages need to be linked to a global time source.
That is to say that both the Mac and the router needs to be set to the right time in the right Time Zone using the right daylight saving time if applicable.
For instance at this time of year the UK uses British Summer Time, a 1 hour advance on GMT.
This then creates a two hour time difference between Paris and London (Anywhere in the UK and anywhere in Western Europe in actual fact.)
Obviously there are places in the world where it is a lot easier to change between Time Zones or move north or south to have Daylight Saving times apply.
If settings appear to be correct and all computers are using the same Time Server, as well as the router I would then check if the WiFi was dropping out on some machines.
It may not be long and may be caused by interference but could possibly be enough to disrupt things.
I would also look at Processor heavy activities like Time Machine Back ups that can distort the amount of time an app takes to do something.

At present you cannot do this in iChat 6
In earlier version there was an Add-on called Chax that could strip the HTML coding to produce the Ball0on and the colours when sending to an ICQ buddy.
The last version is not compatible with ichat 6 (they moved stuff)
There are rumours about a new version but the site does not list it yet.
You may find that changing the style (iChat View Menu > Messages when a text chat window is open) to Compact or Text may make it more readable to your ICQ buddy.

Can't read my iChat messages

Using iChat 2.1, I can send messages to others and they see my text. The return a message, I can see they've sent one, but I can't read it. Why? I've checked that my font is black on a normal background???? What else

-If you are overriding the senders' text and balloon colors, have you checked the font color and background for incoming message?

finish its self-test, too, before restarting your Mac.)
-Have you recently done your Regular Maintenance / General Troubleshooting? I know it says iMac at the top, but these tips really help keep OS X running smoothly on all Macs

Not Receiving Ichat messages

I am not receiving messages from friends on ichat but I know they are sending them because of aim on my Itouch

Ok,
There are several possibles here.
First of all Log in here
Go to the Mobile option in the list (when the page gets back there)
Turn it off (So things are not going direct to the iTouch And if it is listed).
Now set iChat to NOT do Multiple Logins.
If you used the Settings here to Push IMs to your Mobile device (iTouch) then disable that as well.
Quit iChat and then restart it.
Do you now get messages ?
Are you getting the indicator that they are typing ?
Is the iTouch still getting the IMs ?

New to the Magic Triangle - can't get ichat/messages to work

Hey all, thanks for your support right away, I have a feeling I will become a regular. So lets get too it!
I'm using the latest OSX server on Yosemite. I've also attached this server to our Active Directory Server. I've been able to configure and use the following services:
* file sharing
* time machine
* Netinstall
* open directory
I'm working on getting messages to work, to which I feel should have been pretty simple. The error that is persisting is "Messages can't communicate..." "The host domain.com does not support Kerberos authentication."
In the log on the server i'm getting : connect then right after disconnect jid=unbound packets 0
So some of the things i've done: (which probably made it worse)
- In active directory I set the computer to trust this computer for delegation to any service (Kerberos only)
- I've set on the client to "Use Kerberos v5 for authentication"
- I've made sure the DNS is legit with the PTR record.
- I've tried setting the host array
- sudo serveradmin fullstatus shows the following:

How to process received images in iChat/Messages with Applescript

I want to process all received photos or videos with Applescript.
I try this:
using terms from application "Messages"
          on message received theMessage from theBuddy for theChat
                    if the length of theMessage is 0 then
-- it means I received a picture or video file, but I can't get the file with Applescript, because theMessage is an empty string and not a file

But if I receive a photo, theMessage is empty.
The event handlers "on completed file transfer" and "received file transfer invitation" don't work in this case, probably because it is not a file tranfer, but sort of an inline picture.
I use OS X 10.8.
Can somebody help me?

I think "completed file transfer" is regarding to the file being transfered to Apple's Server from your computer when a file is sent, but I'm not sure about "received file transfer invitation." Regarding it being an inline file, maybe try using the attachment class.
