IChat microphone refuses to work! Quite frustrating.

Hi,
when video/voice chatting with iChat, no one can hear me..
I'm running OSX SL 10.6.6 with iChat 5.0.3 build 745 on my Macbook Pro 2010 unibody
I have two microphones, the internal Macbook one and another built in to my Logitec USB headset.
Both microphones are set up in system preferences and it seems to detect my voice when I speak through either one.
I have tried restarting my machine as well as my iChat several times.
Interestingly, if I go to iChat preferences, the microphone is set up and appears to work (the equilizer bar moves).
Audio works. Nothing is on mute. This issue occurs with more than one party that I call.
Any advice?

Hi,
Headsets can be awkward.
In iChat and System Preferences > Sound > Input select any other sound input other than the headset.
Now In System Preferences First chose the Headset and set the volume slider to get the blue bar about 1/2 - 3/4s of the way across to the right (DO NOT have it banging in to the right hand end)
Now set the Mic choice in iChat.
This iChat "last" set up has worked for some people.
IF the volume is not high enough the green bars (which show lower movement anyway) will not move very high if at all.
If the volume set in System Preferences makes it hit the right hand End the OS "Clips" the audio to prevent feedback and they hear nothing (or you record nothing in other apps)
Repeat |iChat Last" for Output as well.

  • Safari, iChat & SoftwareUpdater suddenly not working.

Recently certain applications on my computer haven't been working. Whenever I open any of the following applications (Safari, iChat & Software Updater),I get the rolling little beachball and it freezes up the program. What is causing this and what can I do to fix it? Thanks!

Ok...an update......actually there are many things not working with my computer now it seems....all of my system preferences/control panels, ichat, safari, sherlock, preview, stickies, mail, ical. Whenever I try to open any of these applications I just get the spinning little beachball and it freezes up in that application so I have to do a force quit.
One thing I did try was to boot up from the disk and 'repair permissions'.
But this did not seem to help.
This is quite frustrating to not be able to do anything on my computer.
If anyone has anything to offer I would much appreciate it.
    Thanks.

  • Internal Microphone suddenly stopped working, help please.

That is my problem. I have updated my driver, restored my computer to a time where my mic worked. It was working earlier today, then when I restarted my laptop, I had the legendary Toshiba startup issue. Once I got that figured out and got back onto my computer, I got bluescreened. Eventually I fixed my computer, with this last remaining issue. I've never had issues with my internal microphone.
It's not muted, it's enabled. How can I plug it in when it's an internal microphone? I'm very frustrated. Someone help me. I've been searching for a way to fix it for two hours and I haven't come up with a single solution that's solved the problem.

  • [XP64] Microphone does not work in WinXP 64

Hi,In Windows XP 64bit my microphone does not work, tried it in Ventrilo 2., Skype and even in the Windows Recorder. The computer don't detect any sound. Offcourse?I have selected the microphone in the recordering section in the Windows volume panel and the volume at maxium. Also in the volume panel under playback the microphone is not mute, set to max volume. I have also installed WinXP 32bits and here it works OK with exactly the same settings. Thats why I think it is because of my Soundcard driver, I have installed the latest driver from this site. I have a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatality. Is there anyone with a X-Fi soundcard with the same problem or anyone where the microphone works in WinXP 64bit's Or is it a known problem? Please help me

Hi Theicewarrior,?Creative support has been aware of this issue for quite some time (6+ months, maybe even a year). The 4GB+?RAM driver/addressing issues are not a priority or they would have been addressed quite some time ago.
Presumably this is due to functional Vista drivers for the masses being a higher priority than the relati'vely few of us with 4GB+ RAM and an X-Fi.
While the X-Fi?is a great card, my only wish was that the vendor was forthright about this product not functioning with certain configurations. It is my feeling that?making an effort to help?customers choose?products that will work with their configurations would result in satisfied and repeat customers?and a better bottom line?as opposed to?eeking a few extra dollars out of a slightly larger customer base and?who are then left unsatisfied with a product and unwilling to buy a company's products in the future.Message Edited by Foddan on 07-9-20070:45 AM

  • Microphone does not work in Facetime

    Hi
I read other posts and in Maverik I didn't find simmilar problem, for most people their microphone does not work after few minutes, but in my case, microphone does not work at all in Facetime, so I can hear the other end, but they can not hear me! This happened after updating Mavericks.
    My Mac specs:
    Macbook Pro 2013
    OSx 10.9.1 (Mavericks)
    things I already tested:
I tried to use headphone and without headphone, but it didn't make any difference
Microphone works fine in Skype and other softwares (Audacity, YahooMessenger, etc.)
Tried with WiFi and with Ethernet cable
    Internet speed is 2.3MBps
Router's firewall does not have any restriction for certain ports
Tried turning facetime Off and On
Tried to call iPhone 5s, iPad2 and MacBook Pro each in different network and different countries!
... and finally searching internet for hours (which obviously came up with nothing)
I'll be thankful if somebody help me through, all suggestions are welcome, so please don't hesitate to post.

    Same issue here....
8-core Mac Pro, Lion, Original External iSight camera connected via FireWire 400 through the FireWire jack on the 23" Apple Cinema Display.
Audio and video work fine using iChat and making video clips through any/all apps.
However, using FaceTime.....incoming audio and video are fine, outgoing video is fine, but outgoing audio is missing.  Nobady can hear me.
Sorry guys...you can't doll this one up or spin it in any other direction......it's a bug pure and simple.
Feel free to fix it whilst you're dealing with all the other problems that Lion has.

I have 4s iPhone , I download the iOS 7. Now the front receiver microphone is not working , please help me that how to fix the problem.

I live in South Africa, and I had the same problem with my iPhone 4.
After weeks of frustration and swearing, I was in the process of restoring my phone to a previous iOS. To do that you need to turn the "Find my iPhone" option off, since i turned it off, my problem was solved. No need to repair anything or revert back to old iOS.
***** that i cant use Find my iPhone, but atleast i can use my phone.

  • The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all..

My iChat has been doing this all the time! I can't stay connected for more than an hour without iChat quitting on me and giving me this message:
*"Disconnected from iChat Agent. The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all services. Logging in again will restart it."*
I have tried these steps to fix the problem with no success.
    Step 1 - Repaired Permissions
Step 2 - Rebooted off of the DVD or CD and Repaired Disk
Step 3 - Went to /Users/user_name/Library/Preferences folder and deleted these files:
    com.apple.iChat.plist
    com.apple.iChat.Aim.plist
    com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist
    com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist
    com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
    Step 4 - Reinstalled the **** thing.
My iChat works 100%, I have no issues connecting, video conferencing, screen sharing and etc. But every hour or so the connection drops and gives me that **** message!!! *"Disconnected from iChat Agent. The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all services. Logging in again will restart it."* So have to keep reconnecting all the time! Sometimes I'm in a middle of a conference and the freackn' thing just drops!!!! (Even tho sometimes I do get that error but my video connection still works offline.... not sure how....)
I have been in several forums and no one was able to fix this issue! Can some official Apple guy help with this!!! I mean, ****!! What an annoying bug!! I really on iChat to communicate with co-workers and etc as I work remotely. If Adium had video support I wouldn't even wast my time to get this thing working, but iChat is still my best option(when the **** thing works)
Please any help is greatly appreciated.
And no its not my router and ISP and this happens with any connection(Coffee shops, public libraries, WiFi Hot Spots....)

I had the same problem a month or two ago. I spent a few hours on the phone with an Apple tech and after the fourth time calling back was transferred to a Product Specialist (the highest level of Apple technicians). The specialist recommended creating a test account on my Mac and trying to launch iChat to see if the problem was system-wide or a user based issue. When that didn't work I was out of options. What it unfortunately came down to was having to do an Archive and Install (which didn't work) and after hours of backing up did an Erase and Install. After all the smoke cleared and my computer was back to normal, iChat was back and fully functional as before.
IF YOU ARE USING TIME MACHINE:
*DO NOT* copy all of your files back onto your Mac. Only copy your documents and music, preferences and nothing else. Chances are you backed up the problem without even knowing it and you would just end up back where you started.
I did notice that my .Mac account still works in iChat but AIM does not (which just happens to be what I use to communicate with the rest of the world).
    Good Luck!

  • ISight attached to Mac Pro: microphone no longer working

    Hi all,
Recently my PowerMac G5 died (coolant leak) and I've had to replace it with a new 2.8GHz Mac Pro.
I have an original FireWire external iSight camera that I got off eBay fairly recently, and which I'd used (briefly but successfully) with the G5.
Now that I've got the iSight attached to the new Mac Pro, I find that its microphone doesn't work. As a camera it works fine, but I get no sound input from it. I've tried plugging it into both the front and back FireWire 400 ports on the Mac Pro to see if it works with one and not the other, but it won't work with either. Video image fine; sound input non-working. It definitely worked OK before, when it was attached to the G5.
My system is completely up to date, as of today (24th July), running Leopard 10.5.4.
I'm not sure how one is supposed to tell what version of the iSight firmware is installed, but I looked under the FireWire section of Apple System Profiler, and the iSight is listed there as follows:
    iSight:
    Manufacturer: Apple Computer, Inc.
    Model: 0x8
    GUID: 0xA2700040E355E
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 200 Mb/sec
    Sub-units:
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x102
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x11
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x12
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    Product Revision Level: 1.0.2
Now, I don't know why there are all those near-identical 'iSight Unit' entries, but I do note that the last line says "Product Revision Level: 1.0.2", so I assume that it means that I've got the 1.0.2 software installed in the camera.
I checked in the downloads section of Apple's support pages and found that there was an update available to version 1.0.3, and that version 1.0.3 improves audio performance in some way. So I tried to install the update, to at least see if I was able to.
And the answer is that I wasn't. The updater told me that I couldn't install the update on my machine because it doesn't run on any version of Mac OS X from 10.4 onwards.
I do still have an old laptop with Tiger installed on it, but I certainly don't have a machine that runs Panther any more, and Panther seems to be the latest OS supported by this particular update; so I can't even see if the 1.0.3 update would fix my problem (and there's no guarantee that it would anyway; it just sounded as though it would be worth a try).
Can anyone offer any advice about any of the above? I do have a USB headset with a working microphone in it, so the problem isn't a show-stopper for me, but I'd prefer the iSight to work properly if possible.

First of all, thank you very much: you've just solved my problem!
To answer your initial question, the iSight did indeed show up as a sound input in all the places it should do so, including the Input tab of Sound in System Preferences (and Skype, and iChat etc.). Everything appeared to be absolutely correct, with the small shortcoming that the microphone didn't actually work!
However, I followed your advice to extract the iSight 1.0.3 updater from its enclosing package, and having run that, it successfully updated my iSight to the latest software... and bingo! It works!
So that really was all there was to it. I find it odd that the iSight worked fine on my G5 with Leopard but not on the new Mac Pro, but there you are... I guess that's what firmware updates are for.
One slight oddity is that System Profiler is still showing the firmware as 1.0.2 (and I've done a 'Refresh' in case the info was cached), but the update did work and the updater application does now report the firmware as 1.0.3. And the main thing is that it does indeed now work correctly!
So, thanks very much once again. That was a very swift and painless solution to an annoying problem.

  • Microphone won't work

After installing snow leopard successfully I found out that my internal and external microphone
does not work and I can't figure out how to fix it. Anybody have any ideas?

I have an error that I think might be along the same lines. My audio drivers work to produce sound but whenever I record anything in Garageband '09 on Snow Leopard I get an audio driver error whenever I record or playback audio. It seems to think the audio files are temp files and erases them whenever I quit Garageband so I get "file not found" errors when I open the project. It has caused me to lose quite a bit of time and work. The error I get after recording says the audio driver returned an error, I think it was error -34 or something like that. I cannot replicate it right now because I had to downgrade back to 10.5.8 just in order to complete my work.
I did the Snow Leopard upgrade option originally, then to troubleshoot this I tried a clean install of iLife '09 over the top of a clean Snow Leopard install and the problem still persisted. Seems like a driver based issue to me.

  • External Microphone problem not working.

I am trying to get a Sony ECM-DS70P Condenser Stereo Microphone with a 3.5mm stereo male plug to work on my MacBook Pro with a Behringer UCA222 USB Audio Interface and I am having no joy at all.
    Summary of Problem
The Microphone will not work when plugged directly into the Line-in jack on the MacBook Pro because the Audio Line-In input on the MacBook is line level -10dB to+4dB and microphones are generally around -40dB. So, I need either a line level preamp or a usb audio interface.
I decided on a USB Audio Interface (Behringer UCA222).
The Microphone is plugged into a 3.5mm stereo to RCA L & R cable which is plugged into the L/R RCA inputs on the Behringer UCA222. The Behringer UCA222's USB Cable is plugged into a USB port on the MacBook Pro.
On the Macbook Pro in System Preferences > Sound > the output is set to Internal Speakers and the input is set to the USB Codec (Which showed up when the Behringer UCA222 was plugged in).
    But it doesn't work!
Any help from anyone would be very much appreciated.

I haven't actually tried it myself but it has a good reputation and gets very good reviews.
I have used many (most) of the Blue microphone range, especially the blueberry and the woodpecker (fabulous mic) these are xlr balanced rather than USB but the build quailty and diaphragm/enclosure design is first rate. Not quite Neumann standard but, not at all Neumann prices. Good choice.

  • Having issues with 5.0.1 update?  Quite frustrating!

I was prompted yesterday that my phone was ready for an update so, like any normal person with this phone i proceeded.  It took iTunes 2 hours to download the new update and then i was prompted that my phone needed to be restored and got the black screen with "connect to iTunes" icon on it.  I tried to restore it and it gets about half way through it and then gives me an error messages that says "iPhone cannot be updated due to error (1)" well i can go to "more information" to see how to fix the problem but that was useless because there is every error message except the one i am looking for.  I have also tried to shut down computer and restart, delete iTunes and redownload, and i have also tried to hook to another computer that we have in the house-- mind you, none of the three worked.  I am quite frustrated because i pay so much money for this phone and most importantly because i deal with alot of business call on it and until it is fixed i am unable to work-- i am not really sure why an update is released if the **** thing doesnt work because obviously i am not the only one having this issue.
If anyone can help i would be very grateful, thanks!

    Hi lhsmith89,
I understand your discontent. While most people prefer to use iTunes to update iPhone software, some times an alternate method work better as pointed out by gina7239 (Thank you!). Please try to update your iPhone wirelessly. For detailed instructions please visit this LINK.
I trust that updating wirelessly will resolve your software update concerns. If this option does not work for you, please post the errors you encounter and the community and/or our social media team will provide further assistance.

  • My Microphone is not working in Facetime (iPad2)

The microphone is not working when i use various applications on my iPad2, i am not sure if it happens when i upgrade the IOS to the latest version. Is there someone with the same issue as mine?
Pls. help. Facetime is useless without the microphone...

Saw this on another post - iPad 2 mic not working.
I can confirm vacuuming the mic worked for me. I hadn't used the mic on the iPad 2 for quite a few months, then noticed when trying a VOIP telephone call, the other person could not hear me at all. Vacuuming the mic (tiny hole on the centre, top edge of the iPad) restored the mic to normal.
A tip, when vacuuming, get as much suction as you can by using the crevice tool attachhment on the vaccum and using your fingers to close off as much of the nozzzel opening as possible to maximize the suction.  I noticed it took about 30 seconds of vaccumming before the mic worked again. 5-10 seconds wasn't enough. So if it doesn't work at first, keep vacuuming.
The mic is as good as new. Now, on a VOIP call, I can hear the wall clock ticking away at the other person's end. The iPad makes a great conference phone. That mic is super sensitive.
Thanks to all the other posters on this forum for the mic repair tips. It really has saved my iPad as it's out of warranty.

  • IChat 5 to AIM (Any version) frustrations

This has been driving me insane for a week.
I can connect PC to PC on AIM for video conference. I can connect Mac to Mac for an iChat conference. They work when both computers are on the same office network. They work when one of the computers is remote, so it even traverses our firewall and routers without issue. Under no circumstances will an AIM to iChat video conference fully connect.
I've used multiple computers, and no computer has a software firewall enabled. I have tried AIM 5.5, 5.9, 6.5, 6.9, and currently have the latest 7.2.61 installed.
Here is a trace from a PC initiated Video Chat request (it ends with "There was a comm. error during your chat" on the Mac, and the PC remains sitting on "Waiting for Buddy Confirmation"):

    Hi,
This has never been as simple as it should have been.
It in fact seems to have gotten more difficult as time has gone on.
iChat 3 to AIM 5.9 or 6.1 seemed to be the best it ever was.
This is about as much as we know to try
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
AIM on the PC uses port 5190 to Login, as does iChat (both Default settings)
Both can have this changed to port 443 - AIM uses it as "Fall Back" port if a firewall or router does not have the ports open.
AIM then goes on to use a random sort of port between port 1024 and 5000
These ports have to be opened in any routing device.
The PC firewall since XP service pack 2 has required you allow Exceptions through the firewall (any NON Microsoft app) and preferably also turn On UPnP hare as well so that any routing device can also use UPnP.
The SIP connection Process is supposed to "Negotiate" the ports to be used.
It usually or rather used to show on the Mac end and using the ichat ports (in ichat 3 Audio and Video where on 4 different ports in and out - 16384-16387 as first choices.
In later versions of iChat (4 and up) Video and audio is on one and it is used for both In and Out (port 16402)
However I use Little Snitch and this does not seem to be constant now and iChat will connect on seemingly random port if UPnP is used.
Your Log shows both ends moving ports during the connection Process.
In fact one part of the Log says this
133429.692851 Remote party is using AIM 5.9 client.
    133429.692935 =========== OpenPorts!
It suggests that the ports are not open somewhere.
    This info is also important
    133421.158867 CommNAT result:
    External IP: XX.XXX.XXX.XX
    External Ports: 36870, 36872, 36871
    CNAT_BADTEST ....... 0
    CNAT_ISFULLCONE .... 0
    CNAT_ISPAT ......... 1
    CNAT_ISPATHOST ..... 1
    CNAT_TRYPRESERVE ... 0
    CNAT_PATINORDER .... 1
    CNAT_BLOCKIP ....... 1
    CNAT_BLOCKPORT ..... 1
    CNAT_LOOPBACK ...... 0
Your routing device is not Full Cone (0) which is iChat's Preferred stated method of doing NAT in iChat 5
(our belief is that this is always been the case but only iChat 5's Connection Doctor tell us this).
This is not to say other methods don't work.
My own routing Modem says it is Port Restricted and does fine for iChat to iChat Video (it's a long time since I did an AIM/PC test).
The detail also suggests ports are blocked.
I ma also not sure of the significance of the ports listed at this stage.
However the log also does not seem to state it is mapping those to 16402 (and down to 16393 as it start top down).
133421.573835 [0]Creating a port mapping from on interface 0 from external port 57110 to local port 16402...
    133421.574171 TPListen on port 16402
The @mac name seems to be on a Public IP where as the PC (AIM Name ?) seems to be behind a router when the info is first reported in the log.
Later the @mac name appears to be behind the same router.
This info about the LAN IPs seems to be Odd.
