IChat no longer connecting to AIM

Did AOL disable the Oscar servers? I can't use any AIM compatible client to connect. Adium, iChat and AOL's own client do not work. I can still get my mail.

Hi Alex,
I have posted in your other thread.
This thread deals with part one of this as a symptom.
It can be one of a collection which need greater involvement to solve.
Judging by your other thread you may have to go deeper as you suggest here.

  • IChat doesn't connect to AIM over wireless connection

I'm trying to connect to AIM over an open wireless connection. What happens is iChat sits there for a few minutes saying "connecting" and then eventually tells me that it can't connect. I can still connect to the internet but it won't connect iChat won't connect to AIM.

    Hi John,
If you have a wireless device that is separate from your modem then you need to apply the set up to that device.
Essentially it is turning off the DHCP server.
Setting up Static Addresses is better.
Setting up Static Addresses and the router as a access point is best.
One option for some modems is to be set to Bridge mode:
All ports are open and the Public IP address is passed to the router. You then only have to worry about one set of IP addresses and will have got around the Subnet problem.

  • Ichat won't connect to AIM - timed out

Everything was working fine. Now I still have Jabber on ichat 4.0.7, but my (long-time expired) .mac account times out, won't connect. Just one day it worked and the next it didn't. I have tried resetting port to 443, from 5190, tried using SSL and not. double checked that my .mac and AIM passwords both work on their websites. I can't think of anything that has changed. I was just getting into this - and now it doesn't work. Any ideas please?

So at this screen originally you selected the @mac Option ?
There is an example of the Expanded drop down a little further down.
(iChat 3 pic but same for iChat 4)
There is a similar option if in the iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts you use the + Plus button to add a New Account/Screen Name.
If the Keychain (and therefore iChat) shows you the current @mac.com password but iChat is not connecting then go to your Home Folder (Little House icon)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist (by putting it in the Trash) and Restart iChat.

  • IChat can't connect to AIM due to socket error

    Hi,
Every time I try to connect to AIM via iChat, I get the following error message:
    Could Not Connect To AIM
An undefined AIM socket error has occurred
Has anyone figured this one out yet? I tried deleting the PList and allowed the firewall to make connections but it still won't work.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab and change the port to 443 whilst Logged out of AIM

  • IChat won't connect to AIM. It says I tried to login too many times.

I was randomly using my comp when i tried to login to iChat and it tried to login several times. After it got done freaking out it suddenly said that i couldn't connect to AIM because i tried to login too many times and that i need to wait a few minutes and try again. I've tried deleting the .plist files and have also tried setting the port to a different one. It keeps coming up with the same error. Is there anyone who is also having this problem and might be able to suggest some solutions? Thanks

I take it you are trying port 443.
Try it without the SSL Login
Also try deleting the com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and com.apple.iChatAgent.plist together.
    Don't forget to restart iChat.

  • IChat no longer connects AIM

Have been using iChat (w/ my AIM account) with no problem until today.  The only thing different is that I downloaded the new version of iTunes, in prep for downloading IO5 for my iPhone (have NOT downloaded IO5 yet).  After the restart, iChat ceased to work - it will not connect.  Have not seen anyone else with this issue nor did I see any AIM-specific issues when I searched... so...  any thoughts?

If you still want to use you can change the server to slogin.oscar.aol.com with port 443 and check SSL. Seems to work for me.

  • IChat no longer connects

I have used iChat many times early in the year with no problems.
I have not used iChat over the past several months.
Recently I started using it again and I am having problems connecting.
    I am constantly getting error codes -7 & -8
Recently my son got a new Mac Book and he is having the same problem as well.
We tested it out with both firewall on & off.
Also changed QTstreaming speed to 1.5Mbps T1
    We still have the problem.
Both of us are on cable.
Other, then the above mentioned changes, I have never fooled around
with any of the settings in iChat, for it always worked, up until now.
Does anyone have any idea what caused this problem?
Will it be resolved by an update from Apple or do I have to
start making adjustments within the program.
If more info is needed, please let me know and I will pass it along.
    Thank you

    Hi Ralph,
After reading several articles on your website, we did the following:
My son and I made the following changes to both of our computers.
    Sys Prefs> Sharing>Firewall
    Opened ports 5060,51190,5678, etc. etc.
I turned the firewall off on my router as well.
Now, we are no longer getting the error-8.
My son is getting insufficient bandwidth errors.
    I am now getting error-22

  • Ichat won't connect to AIM

Hi. I know there's other topics with this exact problem but none of them were helpful, so I have to post my own here.
For months I have had the problem with iChat, where if I try to sign in, it collapses and expands many times and tells me I have tried to sign in too many times and to try again later. Maybe a handful of times out of the many months this has been a problem, I have randomly succesfully logged in, but of course it would mess up again a few hours later.
I downloaded the AIM app for Mac so that I would be able to chat with people, and that always worked, but I really much prefered the iChat, so I have been trying to fix it.
I changed the port to 443, that did not work. I deleted the .plist thing, did not work. I followed all of the troubleshooting guidelines I've found on this website, nothing worked. Worst of all, after doing ALL of this, it seems that it somehow messed up my AIM application too, because now when I gave up on iChat and decided to just use my AIM app again, it will no longer let me sign in, and tells me "rate limited". Now I REALLY can't do any chatting.
    what the heck?

    Hi,
You have OS 10.5.8 with Security Updates to get to iChat 4.0.9 (Only reported as such in iChat and using Quicklook on the app in the Applications folder - and not by Get Info)
That would appear to be Up-to Date
IF your Name and Password are letting you login to the AIM web site or with AIM Express in a web browser I would delete com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist which you will find in your Home Folder/Library/Preferences
Restart iChat afterwards. This will force a new login using info in the Keychain for your Password and Screen Name.

  • IChat can't connect with AIM on Vista

I'm trying to conduct a video chat. I'm using iChat 3.1.9 (v446) and my sister is using AIM 5.8 on her brand new Dell laptop running Vista. We both have Linksys Routers which have all the recommended ports opened PLUS we both tried turning our firewalls completely off.
When she invites me, it tries to connect but ends up saying that I "did not respond". When I invite her, it sits in a perpetual state of "waiting for XX to connect". All sessions end with "error 8".
Help! It can't be this hard??

AS it is Vista I presume that is AIM 6.8

  • IChat can't connect to AIM or Google accounts

When I try to connect to my AIM account I get the pop-up message "The host refused the connection, try again later"
When I try to connect to my Google account I get the pop-up message "Could not connect to host talk.I.google.com"
Is there a setting somewhere in iChat that I have to change?
    I'm using iChat 4.0.7

    Hi,
I had not heard that the GoogleTalk server would allow different ports.
I was trying to make sure you had the "Right" one with the "right" server.
    If it works though.
    AS to the Name displayed.
This is a sort of threefold thing.
    iChat first.
At the to of the Buddy list it will show either your "Real Name" as it is in the Address Book at the My Card (Head and Shoulders icon) or the Screen Name you are using (this will be all lower case and No spaces).
When you set up a New Screen Name at AIM on this page you will see that you can set a Display Name.
A Display Name is only seen by your Buddies.
iChat can see Display Names so will show spaces and Upper Case characters if they are used.
On the top right of that same page you can Log in to the AIM Web Pages
Once there you can use something like the Edit Password option to access your Account setting and set a Display Name

  • IChat can't connect to AIM network

My iChat was working fine with my AIM account until this evening -- now, it reports that it can't connect at all.
What could have happened to my Macbook since this morning?
How can I figure out how to fix it?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not sure why your iChat use to work and now it doesn't. Have you made any adjustments to your Mac firewall? Did you make any adjustments to your router?
Or have you made any other system wide changes since the last time you were successful in logging in.
Lastly, you may want to change your port to 443 iChat>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings
Lastly, it may have just been a problem with the AIM servers. Are you up and running again?

  • IChat no longer connecting to Jabber server after Leopard upgrade

Just upgraded to Leopard yesterday, and the only significant glitch I notice so far is that iChat is now getting stuck in the "Connecting..." step when I try to get onto our Jabber server (which was working fine before the upgrade). Am now getting a "untrusted certificate" message now, which I also didn't get before, but I can continue and it does try to connect but gets stuck in doing so every time.
Have tried tweaking the jabber account server settings, but to no avail.
    Sound familiar to anyone?
    Cheers.

Hey! SO i was having the same problem but I discovered what was wrong. Actually I don't know what the problem was, but the solution to this is...........
    1. delete your old jabber(google) account
    2. add a new account, and then on the "type of account" there is a new one called Google Talk Account, and obviously pick that option !
    3. enter username and password and BINGO! it works

  • Unable to connect to AIM error

I keep getting this error message when I try logging on to ichat:
    Could not connect to AIM
The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost.
I have checked all of my proxy settings in firewall and have even tried my aim and .mac account. My bonjour chat seems to be working fine and other than this my internet connection is strong.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know a quick fix?

No Help, I have gone through and deleted all the ichat preferences in both the main library and the user one.
I have force quit the app with activity monitor.
I have restarted the computer after all of this.
I have changed my port to 443.
I have been thinking of upgrading to Leopard and wondering if that might fix this, Regardless, I am still unable to connect. I get the exact same message after it tries to connect for a couple seconds.

If there is a problem somewhere with your Screen name and the way it logs in to AIM this will be brought forward to Leopard when you Update as you will keep the .plists
iChat only has .plists in your Home Folder.
The Force Quitting of anything to do with iChat in the Activity monitor was to Force Quit iChatAgent (it has no icon in iChat 4)

  • Suddenly can't connect to AIM/iChat.

I'm sorry if this has been asked many times, and answered many times but I can't find an answer to my problem. Please help.
Recently I am not able to connect to iChat while I am at home. When I'm at school and using their wifi, iChat works fine. After awhile, it won't connect a box comes up and says, "Could not connect to AIM. The conncection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I can still go to websites and my .mac mail seems to be working fine, it's just the iChat that isn't working. I've checked for updates and it says I have all the updates that are available. To my knowledge, I didn't change any numbers, addresses, connections or whatever to cause iChat to stop working. I don't know what it could be, or what changed all of a sudden that it stopped working.
    Thanks!

    Hey,
I'm having the same problem, too. Only, for some reason, my iChat stopped working in my dorm room at school. It was working yesterday in my dorm room and worked when I was in class, however, it stopped connecting when I tried to sign on from the dorm. I tried changing my port from 5190 to 443 and nothing happened. It either says "connecting" for a very long time or it says "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I'm not sure why there is such a sudden change, however, I really need to get on iChat. I also tried using Yahoo Messenger and the same thing happened also. Any more ideas besides attempting to change the port??
    Thanks =)
