Ichat or skype for voice lesson

My wife is a singing teacher in NYC and has a student in LA. She would like to be able to do a singing lesson with her student in LA. She has a new 2.4 GHz macbook and her student also has a Mac.
1. Which would be better ichat or skype especially the audio and video quality?
2. We also have a external iSight camera that we use on our G5 imac. Can we use this on the Macbook and override the internal isight? I am assuming the external one is better. Should she invest in a higher end web camera and if so any recommendations?
3. As she needs to be able to clearly listen to her student, should she use a headset or external speakers?
This is all new to us and we are hoping others have investigated this and can offer some advice.
Jerry

Hi
1. Mac to Mac use iChat, you will find with Skype you might get feedback.
2. You can but i would use the internal cam as the pic is a bit better(depending on bandwith)
3. Try and see what she prefers.
If you would like to test you can connect to me defcom1 .mac account.

  • Webcam for ichat or Skype?

Hi, could anyone give me any advice on a good webcam to use with iChat or Skype?
    Thanks, John

    Hi
http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/ can be a starting point.
With a Mac Pro that has USB 2.0 ports you can get any UVC (USB Video Class) camera as the Mac OS has included a Generic driver for these since OS 10.4.9 (Although it does not always give you all the options Vista might.
UVC tends also to be known as Vista Certified.
They include the X-Box 360 camera which gives quite a Good picture.
The Link I posted links to other site that sell the cameras.
Not all of those sell brand new cameras. (I spotted a Firewire Web Cam on sale from Amazon in the list)
A Firewire camcorder can function as a Web cam without the need for further drivers as well.

  • Submit: Great Skype for iOS ideas

The new iOS idea board lets you all share and exchange your ideas on how to improve and develop Skype for iOS.
Before you start sharing your ideas, here are some guidelines to help you get started:
    Idea Submission Guidelines
Search before posting. Do a quick search and make sure you are not submitting a duplicate. If the idea already exists show your support by giving kudos to the original idea rather than watering down the potential impact across multiple submissions.
Draft your idea. Be as clear as possible, tell us what your idea is, how it would benefit users and why you think we should consider it. That will not only help us to better understand what you want, but we may even be able to solve your problem more quickly another way. Please avoid text speak and keep the idea short and to the point. Ideas are available within a limited number of topic sections of the community as they are not discussion threads.
Currently you can choose one of the following topic labels for your ideas:
    Video
Video calling is one of Skype’s most popular features. What do/don’t you like about Video calling on Skype for iOS and do you have any ideas for how we can make video calling even better? You can send video messages to family and friends, even when they’re not online. Let us know what you think of Video Messaging in Skype and any ideas you have for how we can make it better.
    Voice
Calling individuals and groups is at the core of Skype. Anything you are currently missing with those features? What would make you use the Skype app more for calling?
    Instant Messaging & Contacts
How can we make it easier for you to find friends and family on Skype and add them as a contact? What are your thoughts on how contacts are managed on Skype for iOS? How to enrich your chat experience? Do you have any recommended improvements?
    Sharing
Tell us how you would like Skype to be integrated with iOS. Would things be easier if Skype was better integrated with your contacts? Better integrated into other apps? Or in the dial pad?
    Some things to include:
Start with a clear title, e.g. "Add XY", ""
Add appropriate label(s) from the list of labels shown below
    List features and benefits
Review the ideas of others. Look at other ideas to see what your fellow community members are requesting and feel free to exchange on them in the comments section. While we take into account the numbers of kudos an idea receives, we also consider the amount and quality of member feedback when making our decisions.
Add value. Vote for those items that you like and agree with by giving the idea a kudos. It's really a significant way to recognize someone's effort. We are using votes as a barometer to find out more about what our contributor community thinks is important, so we can factor this into our prioritization process.
Submit a new idea. Adding an idea is just like posting a message on a board. To create an idea, click on the “New Idea” button, located on the left side of the page content tab, and in the left column under the actions heading click “create an idea”. Be sure to enter a clear title and description of your idea so others can decide how they would like to vote. Remember, the more complete your thought, the more likely it is to get noticed! You can use simple HTML, format the text, or add links or images. You can also preview your idea and check your spelling before you post the idea.
Do not be discouraged. Sometimes what seems simple may not be so simple to build. Some ideas take longer than others, and some ideas will not be possible within the scope of what we want to accomplish in the next year or so.
Be respectful. Comply with the Community Guidelines and Skype etiquette.

How to check if an idea exists already?
Use the search function filtering by the ideas board – or click here (direct link to search function)
    What do the votes/kudos mean?
Just as you can give kudos in the community boards and blogs, you can vote for ideas you like on the Idea Board. Ideas with high vote totals are more likely to be recognized and accepted by the teams at Skype who develop our products and services. You can also leave comments on ideas, but remember to be kind!
What do the different idea statuses mean?
We strive to review submitted ideas on a biweekly/monthly cycle. Each idea will go through a life cycle that will be assigned statuses at each milestone. The statuses are explained here:

Already exists - This is available in the product.
Future possibility - Idea is a good one but not something we can include in a near-term product or software release.
Accepted - Idea has been accepted and has been taken forward for implementation, check back soon for updates.
Not right now - We like the idea but just not for right now, we will revisit it in the future.
Implemented - You asked for it, we did it!
My idea has been accepted. How long will it take to be implemented?
Sadly, we will not be able to provide dates for the implementation of any accepted ideas within the community due to the number of factors involved. Please be patient and let us make sure it is completely ready before we make it available.
How will I know if an idea has been implemented?
You can track the status of your ideas as your ideas are sent to the people here at Skype who can make them happen and you will see the status of your idea is updated. We will be telling you if the idea is something we are working on now or would like to do in the future, or if it’s something that is not feasible for us at this time. To ensure you don’t miss any updates select “Subscribe” from the “Idea Options” menu when viewing your idea.
What ideas have been implemented so far?
You can check "Accepted and Implemented ideas" topic here.
Can I edit or delete my ideas comments?
No, you can't. Be sure to check your spelling and preview your comment before you post it; you can't edit a comment once it's posted.
Who and how often moderates/ manages the ideas board?
The community team is monitoring the board on the weekly basis and product managers will come in on a monthly basis to update statuses of the ideas and post their comments.
If Skype decides not to pursue my idea, will you tell me why?
We do not always provide the reasons for our decisions regarding ideas submitted for review but will strive to provide an explanation where possible.
If I am not comfortable submitting my idea over the Internet, is there another way I can do so?
    No.

I would really appreciate if you guys work on the feature “ custom backgrounds for chat notifications”.
If users will be able to choose any image of their liking in the custom background feature if would add value. Currently some of the chat messengers provide this facility to the users which makes interesting to the users while improving user friendliness and satisfaction. Options that would include are
    Take a photo
    Choose from albums
    Search from web
    Delete
That appears to be a reasonably robust selection. In search, a user can use a built in engine to pull up images based on search and then select it as it their choice. Once you chose an image, it will be asked to confirm and ‘set’ as the universal chat window for all contacts.

If you are asking questions about skype issues this thread is really the wrong place lol. Getting an answer to yoru question will require a little effort on your part.
    First go here:
    https://support.skype.com/en/
Read through that page, if you want to narrow it down and search, use the search.
Since the search targets all skype forums, include which OS you are on.
However since you all are probably on windows, click this link and use search or browse topics.
Do not post a new thread without using search. Look for forum topics marked as [Solved]. Doing otherwise spams the forum and is globally known as inappropriate and poor forum etiquette.

  • How can I setup video on Skype for ipad2?

Just bought ipad2and installed Skype for it,i can have voice discution and I can see the person on the other end,but they can see me besides the pick I have on Skype, is there some setting that I need to change for me to get video conference?

I'm a newbie on Apple.  I've had an iPhone since it debuted, but didn't get an iPad till June, 2012. I just bought an iMac desktop & am exploring it.  I was attracted to Keynote 9, but when I lecture, I need to be able to project my slides through a monitor provided by my host.  How do I get the Keynote slide show to display on a large monitor.  I can have it on my iPad, but that's not large enough to be seen in an auditorium.
I admit my techie skills are poor.  I flunked Kindergarten & would flunk it again if I had to take it over.
I can't figure out how to display Keynote 9 slides on a monitor.  If Keynote could be transferred to a thumb drive, it could them be played on a monitor which has a USB port, but that, I gather, is impossible.  From the posts on this thread, I gather that many people just take their Mac Airs or Mac Pros with them when they speak, but I have a iMac 27" desktop.
As great as Keynote looks, it won't work for me unless someone can figure out how to display it on a monitor.  Apparently, the iPhone can then act as a remote.

  • Skype for Business - Skype search Directory

    Hi all,
we use Office pro plus from office 365. However, we have our on-premise Lync servers since we use enterprise voice.
As of yesterday, I have got the Skype for Business and it looks great. All demos show that with Skype for Business we will be able to search Skype contacts right from the search box. In my case I can not search regular skype users from Skype for Business
client. Does anyone know what could be the reason?
    Thanks,

The server is due out on May 1st, but I'm not sure there's an article yet... I can't find one.  It would be in here somewhere I'd think when it exists:

  • I want to Use iChat with Skype to Videoconference several people

I want to video conference in my niece in New Zealand (PC using Skype) with iChat and the rest of my Mac family stateside.
I have Skype for Mac running and I have the iChat AV running. Any chance to hook in the Skype User with the iChat multi-pane video conference?
It looks like iChat only accepts iChat and AIM but not Skype. My niece apparently cannot get AIM in New Zealand.
Any clever help would be appreciated.

I want to use iChat for Skype as well. I want one chat client for all my communications. That was the point of iChat in the beginning, wasn't it? Hopefully, Apple will jump on the ball and support the best way for us common folk to communicate internationally. The supported Aim when they were king, why not the new king?
I stinks that I can not use the great app, because one no Skype but two I don't know anyone else that uses .mac.

  • Sharing a PPT - using Skype for teaching

    Hello.
I have an online teaching school, teaching kids in China with teachers in the UK.
I currently use Cisco Webex as its functionality for teaching is great, giving me PPT sharing ability and tools to draw and highlight on the PPT slides which is useful. BUT, the connection can be a little bad with Cisco, so I want to try Skype.
I want to know is there a way I can use Skype for the same functions as above ? I will only have up to 4 students per lesson. The most important functionality is to share the PPT.
    Thanks
    Craig

    Greetings, Fellow Teachers,
I am a former teacher myself.  I was hoping other Community contributors would join this conversation before I did!
The Skype client software does not provide a white board or writing tools per se.  What I propose is Skype's screen share facility, which for a group call up to ten (10) particants would require a Premium subscription.  The reason for this is that Skype considers the screen share to be a video feed, so a call with two people using their webcams + screen share = "group call" in Skype.   To take this explanation from a different angle, an audio call to single student, where you as the teacher would use screen sharing, would not require a Premium subscription.
Another note to consider if you choose to use screen sharing: the facility does not work like a corporate group document sharing platform.  Only one person (call participant) could share their screens at a time.
Here is a link to the libary of FAQ articles related to screen sharing so you can make an informed decision:  https://support.skype.com/en/category/SCREEN_SHARING/
I still recommend testing this prior to actually using for a teaching session.  by purchasing a Skype Premium "Day Pass" before purchasing a Premium subscription.  (Please note, the "Day Pass" is valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase.)
    Regards,
    Elaine
Update: Skype no longer requires a subscription for video chat up to ten (10) participants.  Therefore, the outdated portions of my post appear like this.

  • Using Skype for video call on iPad2

I installed Skype for iPad and when I try to place a video call, the video button is present but not active.  I have gone through the audio test call several times and that works fine.  How do I activate the video function?

    Barry-
Looking at preferences and settings, I can not find any way to change access to the video button.  I see it is not active when you place a call to the audio test server, but that is to be expected.
I had a problem with the Macintosh iChat video program, where video was not available when my internet access was too slow to support video.  I do not know if that applies to Skype or not.  If you can have someone call you using their video button to make the call, your Skype video may activate and work correctly in the future.

  • Isight is not working on ichat and skype, however will work on photo booth and imovie.

My isight will not work on ichat or skype, saying that there is no camera connected. isight will work in photo booth and imovie. It shows up in the system profiler. Have tried resetting SMC. Help?

    (1) Here is how I would proceed to isolate the underlying problem that requires corrective action.
    • Shut down everything.
    • Then restart modem and allow its self-test to complete.
    • Then restart router or wireless access point (if you have them) and allow self-test to complete.
    • Then restart Mac.
    • Use  > Software Update... (Update your Apple software if not current.)
    • Then test Photo Booth or iMovie with no other apps else running to ensure they still work.
    • Then quit your test app and try iChat with no other apps else running.
    • If iChat works, quit iChat and try Skype with no other apps else running.
    (2) If iChat works but Skype does not,
    • Verify that you are using the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your OS X (10.5.8) Mac.
    • Update if necessary.
    • Then test Skype again with no other apps else running.
    • If Skype problems remain but your camera works with everything else, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.

    (3) If you still have trouble with more than one app, you may need to use Disk Utility to:
    • repair permissions,
    • repair your disk,
    • or even reinstall Mac OS.
If you reinstall OS X 10.5, use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to return to the latest version in one update step.

  • Skype for iPad??

Has anyone even bothered trying to download or use the new version of Skype for the iPad? Might be just me but I am unable to download it from the app store.
I'm still trying to figure out how it would work on the iPad. Like the calling feature. Does the iPad support a headset with a mic? They say it's compatable with the iPad and that you can make calls with the iPod so I thought it would be cool...if it works that is.
    Thanks

    iScared,
I'm not certain if you are questioning the newest Skype version, or if you question Skype for the iPad in general. Anyway, here's my input:
    * I have made at least four calls with Skype from my iPad, before I updated the latest Skype version.
    * One person I called about 50 miles away said the audio was great. I actually knew that already, because my first call was a test to my home voice recorder.
    * Yes, last week I downloaded the latest Skype version, but have not made a call yet.
    * With each call, I used the Apple earphone which came with the iPhone.
    * The iPad has a built-in mic, and Skype has a speaker option, so the earphone is unnecessary. I prefer it though.
    * I would use Skype more often; however, my iPhone has lots of unused (paid) minutes. With Skype, I would need to pay for my use, albeit it's a nominal amount.
    * My longest call was about one hour. No issues.
Yes, Skype or VoIP, via the iPad is very cool. It is great knowing that I can place calls with my iPad if I choose to do so. Oh, there's one annoyance. If your existing U.S. contact numbers do not begin with a 1, the call will not be completed. You must dial as 1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx in the U.S. Either update your contacts list before you download Skype, edit afterwards, or manually dial. Hope this helps.

  • Skype for Windows Phone idea: Make it work

[Topic title updated by moderator to be more descriptive. Original topic title was: "Re: Submit: Great Skype for Windows Phone ideas"]
Oh, here's a brilliant idea - make it work. Simple enough?
Fix resuming the app. Make it fast enough so I can actually pick up a call.
Decrease battery drain. Currently when using skype my battery usage sometimes reaches 65% per hour. It's not even ridiculous anymore.
I'm not asking much, I don't need calling skype-skype a pleasant experience. Just make it work without requiring 1Gb/s bandwidth and quad-core processor with 8GB RAM.
Last but not least - make SkypeOut not a theoretical feature to lure people into paying subscription but something that actually works at least half the time.
I'm really not asking anything fancy like deleting some old messages or other things people mention. Just the basics of a communication app.
The funny thing is that we all know you don't give a s* about what we are putting here. Nobody's gonna read it anyway.
It's sad. I used to like skype, before the mobile revolution. Now... Just keep it going the way it's going and in two, three years you'll be a history like Blackberry or AOL

As for those "smaller improvements" I think everyone will agree with me that they are way too small, and they take much too long. I mean, seriously, 65% per hour battery drain! I am yet to find an app, ANY app that would be even remotely close to your "achievements". With improvements that small and slow I guess in 5 years skype will be using only 30% battery every hour. If I'm not expecting to be next to a power outlet within an hour or two I'm not even trying to use skype anymore. Exactly the same applies to resuming the app. I understand that there are some improvements but honestly improving by 50 ms is not an improvement that any user would appreciate. Again, in this matter skype is probably the worst or one of the worst among all communication apps in WP store. And it's not like it's a new app. Those "improvements" (exactly the same) have been announced from the very beginning and yet they are virtually unnoticable for an average user. Like I said before, sometimes it's impossible to answer a call because it takes too long to resume skype. And any improvement that doesn't make it possible is not really an improvement, from a user's point of view.
I really hope this changes and next fixes will be dramatic.
Now, SkypeOut problem. I cannot agree that it has anything to do with a carrier I'm trying to call. Here's why:
    1. I'm calling the same people from desktop app, from metro app on my tablets and from my phone. Desktop - no problems whatsoever, Metro - pretty much good as well, Windows Phone - unusable most times.
    2. When I try to call people from phone - it doesn't work at all, I tether a laptop/tablet to the phone, thus virtually using the same connection (ATT) - magically it starts working perfectly fine.
    3. I'm calling landlines and all cellular carriers in Poland. Problems are with ALL of them using Windows Phone, and there are no problems using any other platform while calling exactly the same phone numbers. So, unless you have a problem with Poland in general, it wouldn't make any sense to blame the carriers.
    4. For some reason, sometimes it actually works on the phone. But only sometimes.
Also, I noticed this behavior on Windows Phone:
    1. SkypeOut works bad no matter what internet connection I'm using, whether it's 2Mb/s or 100Mb/s it's just a disaster (most of the times), and whether it's wifi or cellular.
    2. Video calls quality is very poor also on both - wifi and cellular.
    3. Voice calls are actually not that bad. Assuming that I can start the app before they hang up
I'm using Lumia 920 so I hope this phone is not too weak for your app. If it is - you're killing yourself limiting only to owners of the very newest phones packed with the best hardware available.
