Ichat Port Restricted Problem

I just installed OSX 10.7.4 on an iMac.  I am now getting a router error when setting up iChat.  I get the "Port Restricted" message and find that I m not getting any incoming communications.  I have found a help screen which explains(??) what is happening.  I am not the greatest IT guru and am lost in the explanatioon.  Can anyone point me to a beginners manual about the problem, and more importantly - how to fix it!!
Thanks

Here's the page of info.
The Network Status pane of the Connection Doctor window displays information about
your bandwidth setting and network router type. Both of these attributes influence
your ability to establish and maintain connections during audio, video, and screen
sharing chats.
Bandwidth limitation: Indicates whether the bandwidth (data transfer rate) has been
limited to a particular speed in iChat Audio/Video preferences. If the indicator is
green, no limit has been set. If the indicator is yellow, click Settings to view and
optionally change the limit setting in Audio/Video preferences, using the “Bandwidth
limit” pop-up menu.
Router type: Identifies the kind of network address translation (NAT) router your
computer is using to communicate with other devices using the Internet.
A NAT router lets you use one Internet connection to connect multiple computers or
network devices to the Internet using a single public IPv4 address. Typically, the NAT
router assigns private IPv4 addresses to the connected devices. When a computer
sends outgoing packets, the NAT router translates (or “maps”) the packets’ private IPv4
address and port to an address and port that can be used for replies.
If the router type you see in the Network Status pane is Full Cone, your network setup
is compatible with audio and video chatting. If the router is some other type, your
network setup may be causing connection difficulties. Here are the NAT router types
you may see in your Network Status pane:
Full Cone: Anyone on the Internet can send replies to the computer by using the
translated address and port. If either the sender or recipient uses a full cone port, the
connection should succeed.
Restricted: The router associates the translated address and port with a particular
destination address. Replies from other addresses are filtered out.
Port Restricted: The router associates the translated address and port with a particular
destination address and port. Replies from other addresses and ports are filtered out.
Symmetric: The router associates the translated address and port with a particular
destination address and port, but uses a new translated port for each destination
address and port.
Unknown: The type of router couldn’t be determined.

This last sntence about the router not known appeared after I redid the Netgear "Routerlogin program"  So I did do something but nothing changed in the iChat program.

  • IChat, Port Forwarding Problems, Choppy Audio and Video

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help me... been trying to fix this for a few weeks with no luck.
I have been trying video chat my friend through iChat. This has worked in the past no problem. She has a MacBook and I a MacBook Pro. Just recently, I upgraded her computer to snow leopard (I am already running it)
We are having a problem with the quality of audio and video. She says that she can here and see me fine however on my side the audio is very choppy and the picture is extremely pixelated. This worked fine in the past but now is not working.
I have set a static IP on my computer and have forwarded all the necessary ports for it to work. I have also tried changed the port under iChat's setting to fix it.
Does anyone have any idea what else this could be?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
At here end she should go to the iChat Preferences > Video section and reduce the Bandwidth setting to 500kbps.
Once you have a stable Chat Open the Connection Doctor (Video menu) at both ends.
Then at one end at a time you should adjust the Setting upwards one step at a time to find out where and at what speed you have issues.
iChat 5 "sees" the Internet Speed you have differently from iChat 4 or earlier.
You are no longer capped (if you have a Fast Connection) to 1.5Mbps.
This may mean the speed differences between you are now in fact greater than they were before.
It seems at this point the mechanism in iChat to cope with this does not cope so well with these larger differences.

  • Network Status: Port Restricted???

So my ichat one day I started noticing that it was getting fuzzy, so I went to look under Network Status and found that next to Router Type: it says "Port Restricted" and i found out this could cause poor picture quality. How do i fix this I'm using a D-Link router if thats anything

    Hi,
The Question mark at the top of Defcom's Pic will tell you more.
It is about the way your Routing device does NAT.
NAT (Network Address Translation) is not the same on every device. There is no standard as such.
iChat "prefers" Full Cone as it is called but I also have Port Restricted listed and have no problems

  • Video/Screen Sharing via 3G connection not possible - port restrictions?

I'm running Jabber-based iChat AV 5.0.3 sessions from my MBP connected to the Internet via a wireless USB modem 3G/UMTS (German Telekom D1 network). My buddies are connected to the Internet via regular broadband connections (DSL). I have set up a hosted Jabber server via Dreamhost (without SSL, port 5222 used).
    Status Quo:
    - Contact status of remote Jabber users shows up properly. All buttons (text chat, screen sharing, video) are available (not greyed out) on both sides.
    - Text chat works fine.
    - Video chat and screen sharing can be invoked from both sides (confirmation window shows up), but after confirmation the initiation process doesn't finish successfully. The video/screen sharing session doesn't run. *iChat AV shows a message indicating that it doesn't receive an answer from the remote user device.* If the iChat session is initiated from a buddy's computer, the buddy gets the same message respectively.
    - For testing purposes, I changed the internet connection on my MBP from the mobile 3G USB modem to a regular *DSL broadband connection (same ISP, German Telekom). In this scenario, video/audio calls and screen sharing work flawlessly!* Therefore, I assume that the problems in 3G connection mode is caused by the ISP (German Telekom) blocking/restricting ports required by iChat AV for initiating the video call and streaming the data on their 3G network.
Is there any way to bypass ISP restrictions, by either changing specific iChat AV port settings on both ends (client devices) or by port forwarding? If yes, which settings should I change? Unfortunately, it's couldn't find any document indicating which ports are opened/allowed by German Telekom's 2G/3G (GSM/UMTS) network.

    Hi,
Does this 3G device have any set up functions that are on your Mac ?
If it does not it is likely that it is wide open to all Port (65535 of them).
I presume that in System Preferences > Network you see a Public IP when using this device ?
Again this would tend to pint to all the ports being open.
Is there anything on the ISP's web site that suggests this device is unsuitable to be used with VoIP or SIP connections ?
VoIP (Voice over the Internet) uses the SIP connection process the way iChat does.
Most likely the issues is the way packets are sent.
When you do a download, for instance, do you find the speed increases in the first few minutes ?
When some data packets are sent over the Internet the next one is not sent until confirmation that the first has arrived.
This Latency effects Point to Point WiFi (antenna to Dish on House) and satellite connections mostly particularly when it is a two way thing.
It can effect Mobile/Cell phone type connections.
What sort of Speeds are you getting on the 3G device ?
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Do these seem to get faster as the time proceeds ? (this can be difficult to spot).
The Log mentions one end being at just over 2Gbps although it does not make it clear which end.
As the Remote end is the end that reports "Router: Port Restricted" and it works over standard DSL we have to presume they have the ports open.
You could try restricting iChat 's Bandwidth in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (try it at both ends)
If that does not work try 200kbps
This may stop iChat from trying to send data too Fast for the Network Connections.
Realistically there are a few too many variables here.
It could be Speed of data throughout at the Initiation point. (Slow Start up of data transfer)
It could be an Internal setting preventing SIP.
It could be that the 3G network sends and receives data by different routes.
(I have seen this once when a ISP was repairing some Cabling. To maintain end user speeds they managed their own network to split Incoming and outgoing data to the end point.)
iChat does not like this as it checks the IPs and the Hops (number of intermediate stages/servers) and if the data is different it will not connect (Man in the Middle attack protection).
I can't remember the last time I knew of someone being successful with either an 3G USB dongle or a 3G phone as Modem (internet Sharing).
Despite my ideas I think you will be unlucky and this will not work.

  • Port restricted

I normally can connect to ichat video. Recently I changed my provider to comcast, and I am having a hard time connecting. It takes about 20 trys to actually connect, those are the days that it does work. Does anyone else have this problem.
I checked the connection doctor and it says: port restricted, this computers network setup includes one or more devices that are not fully compatible with audio and video chatting.
I need help desperately, and comcast charges for tech support. lamee.

    Brittannny, welcome to the forums.
I would suggest making sure both of you have the latest chat software.
Also find out if the person your having trouble video chatting to can chat with others.
Allot of the time firewalls can interfere with video chat. One trick, to get around the firewall is to invite her to a video chat. ones if fails, have her invite you to a video chat. if this work you may want to re-configure your firewall.

  • Linksys WRT54G, iChat & port forwarding...

I changed a lot of the port forwarding settings on my router so that iChat AV would work nicely. Problem is, these commands took up all of the room in the list, and I'm hoping to play around with these settings a little more to get some extra juice out of some online gaming... Can I condense the iChat port forwarding commands into one command, opening all those ports for both instead of just TCP or UDP? Say, from 5060 to 5678, all open for 'both'?
Thanks for your help, in advance. I realise the better solution would be to buy a router that doesn't make me want to throw it out of a window...

    Hi rodstrout,
If you do not use Bonjour as you do not have another Mac take out 5297, 5298 and 5353 for the TCP AND UDP settings they have (save four lines)
If not using Jabber delete 5220, 5222 and 5223 on the TCP setting (or change this to 5220-5223 as it is only 4 ports)
Setting UPnP if you have it does change it to a Once only ON/Off setting without any typing of ports.
If you do not have this look for Port Triggering (Special Applications) as this can open the ports in less lines.
Depending how the ports can be listed the main iChat AV ports can be done in one or two lines.
    On some it can be:
Trigger port 5678 on UDP to open 5060,5678,16384-16403 (no spaces) on UDP
ON others it is two lines
trigger 5678 on UDP to trigger 5060 on UDP
Trigger 5060 on UDP to trigger 16384-16403 on UDP
In both cases the Login port of 5190 needs to be a TCP trigger to Both protocols (UDP and TCP) but still on port 5190.
The Jabber and Bonjour ports are also added as single ports.

  • Yosemite Messages Screen Sharing Router Type: Port Restricted

I want to do Screen Sharing via Messages as newly enabled in Yosemite (through Messages...not the Buddy List).  Unfortunately, it fails.  I run Connection Doctor under Video in Messages and see that I have an issue with the message "Router Type: Port Restricted".  I would like to see "Full Cone".
What do I need to do?
I am on AT&T U-Verse running a Motorola NVG589 modem. I have the wireless disabled on the NVG589.  The NVG589 is connected via ethernet to my Apple Airport Time Capsule (the tower model that is 802.11ac).  The Airport Time Capsule is set up in Bridge Mode - so as not to create Double NAT but to offer 802.11ac wifi speeds and to provide Time Machine backups.
I have connected directly to the NVG589 modem and gotten the same "Router Type: Port Restricted" message.  I assume I must open a port/ports on the NVG589. If so...what are those ports?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
The Messages app in all versions up to Mavericks only Screen Shares with AIM to AIM and Jabber to Jabber contacts as well as Bonjour connections on your LAN.
It is based on those accounts that do Video and Audio Chats within the app.
The iMessages invokes FaceTime to do Video and will not do Screen Sharing.
However as you say there is this info:-
    Share a conversation —
    and your screen.
Now you can share your screen with the person you’re chatting with. Then you can go from iMessage conversation to screen sharing with just a click. You can easily do things like collaborate on a presentation with a colleague, browse the web with a friend, or select airplane seats with your spouse. And Messages automatically initiates an audio chat when you start a screen sharing session, so you can talk things through while you’re at it.
On checking the icon to Screen Share does appear in iMessages conversation Details option
Notice the slightly diminished ("greyed out") quality to the Screen Sharing icon.
It appears it only works to other Macs.
The Buddies menu also has the option greyed out.
    Routers
My Network Status looks like this.
The Bandwidth Limit is set in Messages > Preferences > Video/Audio pane > Bandwidth Limit.
Setting it to 500kbps is over what it needs to do 4 Way Video chat as Host.
When it is a really fast connection to a much slower Buddy it can help  and also with higher speeds come higher variances which and cause havoc.
There are four main type of Router  type as this refers to them.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation#Methods_of_port_transla tion
Port Restricted is just as effective as Full Cone.
I have had it show up this way on a  Thompson-Alcatel 510v4 when I was first On line in iChat 2 and Netgear device I forget the number of, a Sagem Fast2504 from Sky my current internet provider when I had DLS and the current Fibre Hub that they supply.
I have UPnP set as the method to open the ports needed.
This allows the computer (apps) to tell the router which ports to open.
They will also close after periods on Non use.
Router that do UPnP advertise the fact.
You can reduce the number of devices that happens through (Hops). The default setting is normally 4.  Router to computer counts as 1 Ethernet hubs don't count. But large LANs with more routers (Subnets to LANs) will count as more Hops.
    Ports.
Most devices have the first 1024 port open (there are 65355 in total).
These lower numbered port handle things like Web Browsing on port 80.
FTP on port 21 and 22
Some Outgoing Mail servers on port 25
Secure web connection on port 443
    and so on.
Messages and FaceTime Video chats use ports above this.
These are the one you tend to have to allow.
Video uses 5678 to send invites then moves to port 16402  (or one from a group of 10 ports below this)

  • Time Capsule + DG834G Port Restricted

    Hi,
When I go on the connection doctor in iChat it says that my router is 'Port Restricted'. I am using a Netgear DG834G and Time Capsule so how would I get it to stop saying it? I would have thought it wouldn't say that as I'm using a Time Capsule, although maybe it's because I have it in bridge mode with the DG834G? If so, I've already tried to use it not in bridge mode and it didn't work, unless there's another way of doing it?
    Thanks

Thanks so much for suggesting those things, I hadn't stopped the firewall on the DG834G, but when I did iChat reported it as 'Full Cone' with a green status and also Back to My Mac had a green status too which it hasn't had before!
I did a port scan and realised that even though the firewall on the DG834G is stopped, the Time Capsule firewall is on instead. I always thought that if the two were connected on 'bridge mode' then Time Capsule didn't have a firewall on, because I didn't see any settings for it on the Airport Utility. So thanks for that because it's now all working!

  • Can't run form from Form Builder 10g - Port configuration problem?

    Hi,
I have installed the Database (10.2.0.1.0) and the Developer Suite (10.1.2.0.2) on two Linux machines (Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4 Basic).
If I enter the frmservlet-URL manually everything seems to be fine.
In one case I enter http://127.0.0.1:8890/forms/frmservlet, in the other http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet; in BOTH cases I get eventually a dark square and the status bar says "Applet oracle.forms.engine.Main started".
HOWEVER, if I create a simple form with Form Builder and click on the Button with the green traffic light ("Run Form"), the form runs only on the machine where frmservlet listens on port 8890.
On the other machine (frmservlet configured to listen on port 8889) Firefox pops up, the URL "http://127.0.0.1:32979/6dOrpwghCqnp8PhMT7KVT533m3IaArqFbPqPBOztZXWYSsNy" gets called, and nothing else happens. The screen displays the string "ORACLE FORMS." and the status bar says "Waiting for 127.0.0.1...", and it stays like this forever.
I assume this is a port configuration problem, but I don't have a clue where to start.
Any suggestions how I should proceed are greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi Frank,
    Thank you for your reply.
    I doublechecked my configuration.
In the dialog Edit --> Preferences --> Runtime the Application Server URL is set to "127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet".
However, when I attempt to run the form, the URL "http://127.0.0.1:33140/W2dwbV9eXS2fPkuKlxNhCxFWdEihwDviat2uV7ycrSotqwDN" gets called.
The screen displays the string "ORACLE FORMS." and the status bar says "Waiting for 127.0.0.1...", and that's it.
I wonder how the port number 33140 got selected. Interestingly, this time it is a different number; last time it was port 32979. In fact, the port number seems to change each time; I tried again and now it is 33189.
I will now try to set the port number for the frmservlet to 8890.
I choose Edit --> Preferences --> Runtime and set the application server URL to "127.0.0.1:8890/forms/frmservlet".
I stop the container, open /home/oracle/OraHome_1/j2ee/DevSuite/config/default-web-site.xml and change the port number to 8890:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone='yes'?>
    <!DOCTYPE web-site PUBLIC "Oracle Application Server 10g XML Web-site" "http://xmlns.oracle.com/ias/dtds/web-site.dtd">

<!-- not work with clustering -->
<!-- also add cluster-island attribute as below
    <web-site host="localhost" port="0" protocol="ajp13"
    display-name="Default Oracle Application Server 10g Java WebSite" cluster-island="1" >
    -->
    <web-site port="8890" protocol="http"
display-name="Oracle Developer Suite 10g instance of Oracle Containers for J2EE Web Site">
<!-- Uncomment the following line when using clustering -->
         <!-- <frontend host="your_host_name" port="80" /> -->
<!-- The default web-app for this site, bound to the root -->
         <default-web-app application="default" name="defaultWebApp" root="/j2ee" />
<!-- Do not delete this line. -->
    <web-app application="forms" name="formsweb" root="/forms" />
    <!-- -->
    <!-- <web-app application="forms" name="formsweb" root="/forms" /> -->
    <web-app application ="reports" name="web" root="/reports" />
    <web-app application = "reports" name="demo" root="/repdemo" />
<!-- Access Log, where requests are logged to -->
         <access-log path="../log/default-web-access.log" />
    </web-site>
I restart the container, start Form Builder, connect to the database, and open my test form.
When attempting to run the form, the URL "http://127.0.0.1:33437/Pl0n3ky9vmU5z37A7ScBnQhsGwq3jwuzJpgTAKWPMOYIzT8K" gets called (again a new port number, apparently picked radomly within a certain range) and nothing happens: "Waiting for 127.0.0.1...".
However, when I enter the URL http://127.0.0.1:8890/forms/frmservlet I do (eventually, after confirming that I trust the certificate etc.) get a darc rectangle and the status message "Applet oracle.forms.engine.Main started", which tells me that my setup can't be that far off target.
Here is the output of netstat:

  • Port Mapping Problem with AEX

I have a new Airport Extreme and a problem that did not exist with the Airport. I connect a Toshiba network camera to an Airport Express, set as a WDS remote, with the netcam connected to the wired ethernet port of the Express. I can see the netcam, which also functions as a web server, on the internal 10.x.x.x address, and have reserved a discrete 10.x.x.x address via the MAC/DHCP reservation function of the Extreme. Just like the older Airport which did this without a hiccup, I should be able to map a port (e.g. 1200) on the public IP to port 80 of the internal 10.x.x.x address, then access the netcam on the internal network from any browser (http://67.x.x.x:1200). My cable modem is just that: no router involved other than the Airport Extreme. I'm using the latest Extreme and Express firmware, and am either missing something with the new Leopard firewall, overlooking something else, or dealing with a product flaw. Any help is appreciated and Happy Holidays.

I have forwarded the port (have tried several different ports actually) in what I think it the correct way: using the Airport Utility, connected to the Airport Extreme, and, under advanced options, selected port mapping, entered the public TCP port of 1200, then the private 10.x.x.x IP address of the netcam (which I can access from the internal network with no problem), coupled with the private TCP port of 80. I then attempt to access the netcam from the Internet by entering http://my cable modem IP address:1200 (or another port to which I've attempted to map). This method worked for two years with the Airport, but, with the Extreme and Leopard (simultaneous transition), I'm stumped. After reading other about other port mapping problems, I reserved an IP address for the netcam based on its MAC with no positive results. I also set the firewall through the Security icon in System Preferences to allow all incoming connections. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

    Binary Images Description for "iChat":
Indicates that the port 5060 is not open.
Where it is not open is itself an open question.
It could be All the ichat ports if the Firewall on the Mac is ON but the ports are not set.
iChat send a visual invite on port 5678 which you Buddy Clicks on.
The Process then moves to port 5060 where iChat contacts a Server Called SNATMAP run by Apple that does the SIP link part.
Your iChat contacts this server and tells it what ports you want ichat to use.
The Server finds the Buddy over SIP and tells them which ports and Bingo you are connected.
Now if Your iChat can see the SIP server then you get more details than you have.
As you don't have this detail it can mean the modem or router does not have the ports open.
It can also mean that you have a piece of VoIP equipment like a Vonage adapter that is stripping all the SIP data
It can also mean your ISP offers a VoIP service and wants to charge more for port 5060 to be open.
(VoIP uses SIP as well - Apple have said iChat is a VoIP app)
Most ISP seem to be persuadable that they should unblock port 5060 free of charge as it is effecting your app or that they have changed the conditions of the service without telling you.
Knowing more about your LAN, Make and model of all devices in the link and how they are set up for DHCP and ports would be helpful.

  • Photosmart printer D110A CN732A How do I solve a port match problem?

    operating system: windows 7
    Error message: port match
Any changes made to your system before the issue: No
When I go to print something It tells me it's printing, but then never does. The explanation is always just the simple "error". I've used troubleshoot, re-started everything and ran the diagnostic test which told me it was a port match problem. My printer will still copy.

    Hi there,
Try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03275041&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
It can fix a lot on its own and if not give a better idea of what is going on.
    Best of Luck!

  • Ichat port forwarding settings

Can someone point me to the open port settings for ichat? I cannot find them on the web and the hints and tips section above this forum says I do not have permission to read.
There used to be a document with the UPD and TCP settings, they are the ones I want.
    Cheers

See also my reply to Greg's post.
Apple has two Articles on the subject both are shwon as the two first hits in a Google Search (iChat Ports)
This was the 9th item http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/iChatPicsFolder/6%20iChat%20Ports/index.html But I am baised.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Ichat Port Settings

    Hi,
I work in an office with about 26 people who all use iChat, I have been trying to open the iChat Incoming Ports on our Router as outlined in the Apple Doc #93208. But when I contacted Netgear the Manufacturer of our Router, they said that you can only open up the Ports for one IP Address and that IP Address couldn't be the router.
Is it possible to open the iChat Ports so that everyone in the building can access them or do I really have to specifically Open the Ports for each Machine that uses iChat.
It seems like there should be a way to open the iChat Ports so everyone in the office can benefit, without having to open each Port for every machine.
    Any thoughts would be great.
    Thanks
    Kalagan

    Hi Kalagan,
If it has UPnP it is normally shown as an item on the left hand menu near the bottom of the list.
Your device is not mentioned here http://portforward.com/routers.htm
There are other FVS models that might provide some help.
On some Netgears the Services item is where Port Forwarding is normally done. On some this specifies the IP the port is forwarded to. On My DG834GUK this IP specifying is not done and it appears that the port is open to anyone's IP.
Other devices have specific places for Port Triggering.
Again this is table like in formulation.
It can specify the Trigger port, the Protocol that is going to be on and then the port or ports triggered.
At this point there can be some variance. On some the ports can be listed with commas or dashes separating them such as: -
Port 5678 on UDP triggers ports 5060,16384-16403 on UDP
On others only the dash is allowed.
So we end up with a table that looks like this for the single ports
5190 (Both or Any for the Protocol or add tow entries) to trigger port 5190 (Again Both/Any or two entries)
    For the Bonjour side.
5297 UDP to trigger 5297 on UDP
    5298 (Both/Any) to trigger 5298 (Both/Any)
5353 UDP to trigger port 5353
    For Jabber.
5220 on TCP to trigger 5220 on TCP
5222 TCP to trigger 5222 TCP
5223 TCP to trigger 5223 TCP
The AV ports are different in that they are the ones where one port opens others.
On those that allow commas and dashes then like this
5678 on UDP to Trigger ports 5060,5678,16384-16403 (Note the lack of Spaces) On UDP (Some will not like the 5678 restated although it seems to work for single ports)
On those that will not mix single ports and groups then it takes two lines: -
port 5678 on UDP to trigger port 5060 on UDP
Port 5606 to Trigger ports 16384-16403 (All on UDP)
I hope this gives you enough info to work your device out.
