Ichat says camera is being used by another application when its not!

Evry time i go to hook up my cam, (sony handycam), the stupid computer tells me that my camera is being used already by another application...even when every app is closed and off.. it still says this

Hi,
This message can also show up when iChat is having trouble recognizing the video format coming from the camera. I'm not sure if it will help, but you may want to try installing the iChatUSBCam demo to see if it help iChat to recognize the camera.

  • Built-in iSight problems-"camera in use by another application" but its NOT

I am having an issue with my iMac G5 2.1GHz with iSight built in.
I tried to iChat AV tonight after months of not using it. When I opened my own video window it says "Your camera is in use by another application."
There are no other applications open in the dock other than Finder.
Same results with Photobooth. The message reads -- Photo Booth cannot open because the camera is in use by another applicaton. Close the application using the camera, then try opening Photo Booth again. < OK >
I searched this forum and tried the following:
    • zap PRAM
    • reset SMU
    • reset NVRAM
I looked for iSight prefs, but couldn't find anything. Deleting prefs is the only thing I have not tried, but I do not know what to delete.
Also, the camera shows up under USB under system profiler. The IR remote also shows up on the same bus, and the remote works just fine.
The green light next to the iSight is never on.
I switched to another user and experience the same problems, so it does not seem to be user settings.
Any help to get my computer to recognize my iSight would be appreciated!

Thanks for the note. I saw that Apple KB article #93216 that basically tells you not to have any other applications running that use the camera, which I do not. Also, I have Classic installed, but it is not running as I hardly ever use it.
Since my original post last night I have tried several more things, with absolutely zero success.
One unique thing that I thought would work (and it sort of did) was to add Photobooth to my Startup Items under the Accounts tab of System Preferences. Unlike iChat AV, Photobooth will not even open if the built-in iSight is not available. So, I thought, let's see if Photobooth will open at Startup and perhaps take over the camera before whatever is taking it over has a chance to do that.
Sure enough, this trick worked, although the video screen was blank. On a second time the video screen showed erratic thick lines like it was starting to pass the video data through and then was stopped. Again, my iSight is recognized by Apple System Profiler, so the computer knows it is there and is getting power, etc. As soon as I quit Photobooth and tried to reopen it, I received the message again that the camera was in use by another application.
My next steps, when I am able, are to try to boot off an external firewire hard drive that should have an older saved backup of my system, from when the camera was working. I will also download the combo updater as you suggest, MGW, and apply that as I understand that to be a sort of remedy for any number of problems.
To me it appears to be a software issue. I would imagine with the OS and not related to any application in particular. (iPhoto cannot access the iSight, can it? For some reason my iPhoto opens automatically on my G5 iMac every time I boot it up, and I cannot figure out why. I will look into this issue and see if it is related.)

  • Flash thinks that my isight is in use by another program -- when its not.

When a flash page calls my webcam for use (like Yahoo Live), I get the following error: "Camera is unavailable, may be in use by another application." I've checked, and nothing else is using the camera.
I went into the system and found out that the webcam is controlled by the following component.
    System > Library > Quicktime > QuickTimeComponents.component
When I remove the component from the above location, Flash says that there is no webcam. When I put it back, I get the error message stated above.
Now, I didnt always have this problem... Yahoo Live used to work great, but then I installed Skype, and now it wont work... I then uninstalled Skype, removed it from my login items and everything, but still, Yahoo Live wont work. I then tried the something on my Macbook, and the same thing.
Does anyone know whats going on here?
Both my iMac and Macbook running Leopard have this same issue.
Im thinking that the above quicktime component is messed up and needs to be replaced with the original one.. What do you all think?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Hello Brandon
You can use the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to help find the source of your problem and perhaps eliminate iSight as a contributor.
Unless your problem is with iSight itself, your troubleshooting may lead you to the root cause.
Try some other Flash-based video website to determine whether your problem is only with Yahoo or some system component.
Have you tried to configure your "Flash" settings as described here?
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707
If you cannot even get to the Flash settings window, you may have damaged software. Try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Try a different browser (Firefox, Camino, etc.) to see if your problem might be in Safari.
Have you tried reinstalling QuickTime? Repair permissions before installing QT and again after the restart that finishes the QT update.
If you still believe that the problem is QuickTime related, you might get better help by searching or posting in QuickTime Discussions.
Beyond that, I would suggest that you reinstall all of your Mac's software and see if everything works before you add any third-party apps or peripherals.
Please let us know what you find.
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • Isight camera- Camera is being used by another program

I use my MBP with an external keybpard, & mouse, and monitor so I run it witht he lid closed. Everytime I go to click on the ichat icon- I get a message saying camera is being use by another program.
I am also trying to use an external camera. THis message happens with out without the external camera being connected.
    Any thoughts on this?

Try this... shut down ur machine, then hold the power
button for almost 10seconds or until u hear a beep,
then once ur machine is fully booted up the camera
should start working again. Good luck!
I don't have any issues, but I'm interested... What does this actually do? And what is it typically referred to as?
Is it similar to resetting the PRAM?

Don't know what any of it means.. if somone can let me know what I have to do to make the iChat vid to work let me know. Thank you.

I have exactly the same problem! None of the above worked either. I have a logitech camera with iUSB installed which worked fine when I had 10.4.11, but after upgrading recently to 10.5.5 following a hard drive failure on my G5 imac and re-installing iUSBcam, all I get is that the camera is in use by another application! Again, as with the initial post, it works with photobooth and the logitech driver software fine.
I have seen on another post, that an "archive and install" from the original disk has solved the problem previously, but having just spent some considerable time re-building my system to where it was before the hard drive failed, I am a bit loathed to follow this route. Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

  • IChat says my camera is in use by another application

I recently bought an IceCam2 and plugged it into my computer, but when I open ichat to use the video, it says that the camera is in use by another application, but I am running no other applications. I have tried to restarting my computer, which has not helped, and I also restarted again reseting the PRAM which also did nothing...please help!

    Hi.
I had this same exact issue with my PowerMac G4. I would plug in my new USB 2.0 MacAlly IceCam2 and it would work in all other programs except for iChat. I noticed that in the other programs the camera was very slow (response time) but was functional. After searching everywhere I some how decided to unplug it from one of the two built in USB ports (shown below) and plugged it into an expansion port on a PCI USB 2.0 card I recently installed.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/PowerMacG4/3Input-Output/chapter_4_section2.html
    USB Ports
The PowerMac G4 computer has two external Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports on the back and two on the keyboard. The USB ports are used for connecting the keyboard and mouse as well as additional I/O devices such as printers, scanners, and low-speed storage devices. The USB ports are off of the USB controller connected to the PCI bus.
Each USB port is connected to a separate USB root hub, allowing both USB ports to support 12 Mbps devices at the same time with no degradation of their performance. The USB root hubs also connect to the internal USB modem and Bluetooth modules and to the USB port on the ADC monitor connector.
The USB ports comply with the Universal Serial Bus Specification 1.1 Final Draft Revision. The USB register set complies with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification.
Well you see it right, my problem was that I had the webcam that required a USB 2.0 connection plugged into a USB 1.1 port! I wish I would have known this before hand but I assumed that since the computer was built during the reign of the USB 2.0 era that the USB ports on my computer were in fact USB 2.0 and not the old 1.1 standards!
Well I plugged in the MacAlly USB 2.0 IceCam2 into the USB 2.0 slot on my expansion 2.0 USB card > opened up iChat > works perfect now! If anyone is receiving the very disappointing error message about "camera is in use by another application" message with a USB webcam - verify you are using the correct USB standard (ensure the camera and port matches).
I wish I would have known this a few days ago!
    Thanks,
    ~croat

  • Your camera is being used by another aplication

hi, i just by my imac g5 and suddently photobooth wouldnt open anymore.
it says that my camera is being used by another aplication , but i have cheked if other aplications are open (ichat, imovie hd, comic life) ...and they are not. Please help me solve my problem..
How can i know witch aplication is using my camera?

It can be that you (or some one you share the Mac with) has not closed down an application that was using the camera when you switched accounts.
If you could check the other accounts have no applications running that use the camera. You can do this in sysprefs, accounts. (need admin access)
Very often Photobooth has an all account camera claim when running.

  • Error says"Your camera is in use by another application"...no apps running

I just purchased a brand new iSight. I connected it to my G5 but when I start up iChat and click on the green video camera icon at the top right, I get a new window that just says "your camera is in use by another application". I don't have other applications running. When I click on the preferences button at the bottom of that window I get another new window with some options for microphone and bandwidth limit. The iSight is not even an option for microphone.
I tryed the iSight on a MacBook Pro and a iBook, it works perfect on both so I don't think there is anything wrong with the iSight.
A few months ago I tryed to run a logitech camera on the G5 but couldn't get iChat to recognize that camera either. I wonder if did something that is coming back to haunt me.
I downloaded the latest iChat, tried all the basic stuff like removing the logitech software and restarting the computer...I am running out of ideas...Help, please

Normally we would suggest running the appropriate Combo installer or try reinstalling Quicktime

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

  • Says camera is in use by another program

    Eventhough nothign else is open.
I recently upgraded to 10.4.8 in order to fix the sudden shut-down bug on macbooks. Now, iPhoto starts up when I start up. COuld these be related ot the iChat problem?

    Hello gdoeas
Now, iPhoto starts up when I start up.
You can stop this by removing iPhoto from your System Preference > Accounts > Login Items. Then just launch iPhoto yourself whenever you wan to use it.
You should also check your Image Capture application's Preferences > General > Camera: Choices Bar to be sure that it is set to "No application" to prevent unintended application launches.
COuld these be related ot the iChat problem?
I do not see how unless you got a bad 10.4.8 download or install.
Disconnect any USB add-ons while you are trying to troubleshoot. Item 2 of Apple's USB Device Troubleshooting article tells you to unplug all USB accessories from the computer while troubleshooting.
Then try all of Apple's relevant suggestions from iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message.
If your problem persists, try the suggestions re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight.
If none of the above corrects your problem, you may have had a bad download or install of 10.4.8, Try the following to rule out this possibility:- Repair permissions.
    - Then download and apply this Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (iNtel).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iChat again.Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Please let us know if any of these suggestions helps you.
    Cheers,
    Jim

Have been unable to empty trash for the last 24hours, says it is being used by another task, how do I clear it. Thanks for any help.

Generally when you get the resource in use error logging out or rebooting will take care of it. When a file just absolutely refuses to delete try restarting in Safe Mode (hold the left shift key after the computer restarts) and then empty the trash.

  • Photo Booth Problems -- being used by another applications/ Please help!

Hi everyone: I am having problems with my 17" iMac (C2D). Photo Booth worked great for the first few weeks. Now when I go to use it -- I get a message that says it is in use by another application or there is no camera attached. Well of course there is a camera attached and there is no other application running. I've tried shutting down and bring the computer back up, as suggested in other posts. That did not work.
Any other suggestions please. I'd really like to get this going again.
    Sincerely,
    Anne

    Hello apple-chick
Check to make sure that iSight was not left on in another app, it can only be used by one app at a time!
    1. See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications.
    2. See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
    3. Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
    4. Reset SMC
Reset your computer's SMC and then check System Profiler again.
