Ichat says my iSight is in use by another app

Hello, I just got my iSight that I bought on ebay.
I have a problem, iChat is saying my camera is in use by another application, but I'm not using it with any other app. I also tried to use it with quicktime pro, and when I went to file, new recording I got the same message.
Can anyone give me some help with this?
Thanks

Hello WishboneJG
Because your iSight is newly purchased, you may want to contact the eBay seller for help suggestions or to preserve your return or exchange rights. If your iSight's seller does not help you resolve your problem, try the following suggestions one-by-one until you find the one that works for you.
(0) Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts.
(1) Restart your Mac. Sometimes that is all that is required. If you can get the iSight recognized, you can use these suggestions to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.
(2) If you use an HP printer/scanner with your Mac, consider the "daemon" suggestions from user "parkersal" in this post.
(3) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
(4) Try every suggestion re: Standalone iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Also try the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific" as explained in the built-in iSight troubleshooting suggestions on that page.
In addition to testing with QuickTime Pro, also try iChat, iMovie, or some of the other Applications You Can Use With iSight to test whether your problem is "application-specific".
Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
(5) If none of the suggestions above correct your problem, try the following:
- Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
- Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help)
- Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
- Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
(7) If none of these suggestions help, I suggest that you contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check. If you do not have local access to Apple Service, see Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions.

  • IChat says my camera is in use by another application

I recently bought an IceCam2 and plugged it into my computer, but when I open ichat to use the video, it says that the camera is in use by another application, but I am running no other applications. I have tried to restarting my computer, which has not helped, and I also restarted again reseting the PRAM which also did nothing...please help!

    Hi.
I had this same exact issue with my PowerMac G4. I would plug in my new USB 2.0 MacAlly IceCam2 and it would work in all other programs except for iChat. I noticed that in the other programs the camera was very slow (response time) but was functional. After searching everywhere I some how decided to unplug it from one of the two built in USB ports (shown below) and plugged it into an expansion port on a PCI USB 2.0 card I recently installed.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/PowerMacG4/3Input-Output/chapter_4_section2.html
    USB Ports
The PowerMac G4 computer has two external Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports on the back and two on the keyboard. The USB ports are used for connecting the keyboard and mouse as well as additional I/O devices such as printers, scanners, and low-speed storage devices. The USB ports are off of the USB controller connected to the PCI bus.
Each USB port is connected to a separate USB root hub, allowing both USB ports to support 12 Mbps devices at the same time with no degradation of their performance. The USB root hubs also connect to the internal USB modem and Bluetooth modules and to the USB port on the ADC monitor connector.
The USB ports comply with the Universal Serial Bus Specification 1.1 Final Draft Revision. The USB register set complies with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification.
Well you see it right, my problem was that I had the webcam that required a USB 2.0 connection plugged into a USB 1.1 port! I wish I would have known this before hand but I assumed that since the computer was built during the reign of the USB 2.0 era that the USB ports on my computer were in fact USB 2.0 and not the old 1.1 standards!
Well I plugged in the MacAlly USB 2.0 IceCam2 into the USB 2.0 slot on my expansion 2.0 USB card > opened up iChat > works perfect now! If anyone is receiving the very disappointing error message about "camera is in use by another application" message with a USB webcam - verify you are using the correct USB standard (ensure the camera and port matches).
I wish I would have known this a few days ago!
    Thanks,
    ~croat

  • Error says"Your camera is in use by another application"...no apps running

I just purchased a brand new iSight. I connected it to my G5 but when I start up iChat and click on the green video camera icon at the top right, I get a new window that just says "your camera is in use by another application". I don't have other applications running. When I click on the preferences button at the bottom of that window I get another new window with some options for microphone and bandwidth limit. The iSight is not even an option for microphone.
I tryed the iSight on a MacBook Pro and a iBook, it works perfect on both so I don't think there is anything wrong with the iSight.
A few months ago I tryed to run a logitech camera on the G5 but couldn't get iChat to recognize that camera either. I wonder if did something that is coming back to haunt me.
I downloaded the latest iChat, tried all the basic stuff like removing the logitech software and restarting the computer...I am running out of ideas...Help, please

Sync your iPhone to iTunes, and see if that does the trick.  Also you could try a Soft Reset with no Risk to Data.  Holding down both the Sleep button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears and then waiting for the Reset to bring you iPhone back to the lock screen.    Are you trying to add the email at Settings>Messages>Send and Receive from (2 Addresses) your iPhone number and your email address?

  • "Camera in use by another app" message in iChat on Lion?

Ever since I installed Lion, when I try to initiate a video iChat, it tells me that my camera is being used by another app. In fact, it isn't. Restarting iChat fixes the problem, but I have to restart it EVERY TIME I want to initiate or receive a video chat. When it's behaving like this, the other person receives a message that I'm in another chat.
    Suggestions?

  • ISight Makes a SLOWER "Turn On" Sound Then "Used by Another App Message"

I've had my iSight cam for about 4 years. When I plugged it in a couple of days ago, that quick sound it makes when it's connected (focusing sound?) was much slower. I then received the message that it is in use by another app.
I do regular maintenance (permissions, clean caches, check pref files). I've tried another user account. I've unplugged everything and shut the computer off for at least 15 minutes. I've tried another firewire port. I'm going to reinstall the 10.4.10 combo PPC update.
Has anyone else encountered the slow "turn on" sound to find that their iSight no longer works?
Im afraid I'm going to have to send it away, pay $150, and get it repair. I guess that's better than paying $350 for a new one.
    Thanks.

    Hello PDXKevin
Has anyone else encountered the slow "turn on" sound to find that their iSight no longer works?
    Not I.
I know you did not ask, but you may want to consider any of the following that you have not already tried before you have your iSight serviced.
If you have changed anything recently, have you considered Possible hardware or software conflicts.
I see you have previously posted about problems with your Firewire. Does your iSight show as a Firewire device in your System Profiler? Do other Firewire devices work when connected to the same port on your PowerBook?
If your iSight works when connected to a different Mac but you do not see iSight in System Profiler when your iSight is connected to your PowerBook, you may have connection, cable, Firewire, or other problems with your Mac. In this case, try Apple's suggestions in What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device.

Hi, i buy new phone in ukraine, but when i try add new device on my apple support profile,it says that serial nuber already used by another apple id please help what can i do?!thx

You purchased a gray market phone. The iPhone is not available for sale from any Authorized source in Ukraine. There are no authorized or supported carriers in Ukraine.
Take it ack and get your money back.
If you want an iPhone, go to a country where unlocked iPhones are available for legitimate sale and purchase one directly from Apple.

  • Cant disconnect iPod. Files used by another app.

iTunes will not let me disconnect my iPod because it says files on my iPod are being used by another app. I have my iPod set up to update manually because I have a few different music files on my iPod then in my iTunes music library and I dont want them deleted. Right now the only way I can easily disconnect the iPod is by the icon in the windows toolbar. Or is that what the manual means when it says you have to disconnect the iPod manually when the iPod is set up to update manually. I confused >.< Please help!!!

Does this always happen when you connect your iPod? If not, and if you can disconnect your iPod by using the Remove Hardware icon in the toolbar, then it should be no big deal. Don't worry too much.
Occasionally I also encounter this after I copied songs to my iPods. I don't know why but since I was able to disconnect using the Remove Hardware icon I do not worry about it and so far I have no reason to be worried. I use manual update as you do.

  • Restore time machine fails - files in use by another app

Situation: I am trying to get my files off my broken LaCie external drive(no longer mounts, unable to be fixed in Disk Utility) .
    This is what I did:
    a. I select all the files in Time machine.
    b. I click restore, they "come forward".
    c. A window comes up saying "blank" (meaning the first file in the list) cannot be opened because it is in use by another app.
    d. I tried selecting just one file vice all the files, same thing.
It is a major tease that I can see the files, but are they just ghosts?!
Additional info: I am scanning with Disk Drill for the last hour, NOTHING found on the drive. How could almost 350gb of files disappear? Now it says no recoverable data found.
Disk Utility lists the drive, but it is greyed out and therefore unable to be fixed in any way).
Also, Disk Warrior also says the disk is in use (by what?), and cannot continue to rebuild the drive. Error codes given: 2153 and 4903.
I do believe I am hosed.
    Thanks

I'm staring to suspect that it might be some underlying library that firefox uses that's caused it.  I just tried 3.0.12 and that's behaving bizzarley too.
With that I get some console output at least, not sure if it's much help.

  • Suddenly iPhoto gives me the error message "your photo library is either in use by another app or has become unreadable".  HELP

Suddenly iphoto gives me error message 'your photo library is either in use by another app or has become unreadable'.  What can I do?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

But it still says its in use by another program in ichat
This is my first mac, its very upsetting
I looked in the system profiler and it shows up under usb,
but the usb option doesnt show up in stickam nor does my ichat work
    HELP
the Apple store is an hour away and i dont want to drive, i want to fix this myself

Are you opening all the programs at the same time. The camera will fight between applications for its use and may get stuck. It's better to open and then close each. When all else fails trash the preference file for the application or applications. There are specific directions for this on the apple site.(or someone may likely follow my post on an easy how to) I can't go through at the moment but keep in mind preference file or .plist as they are shown are all located in one specific area of your mac. By trashing them is like resetting the program to it default setting without your changes to color background, font choice etc. Minor stuff really. The plist file is rebuilt automatically on relaunch of that application. Trashing a plist is a common fix recommendation and about the extent of ever having to go near the system area.

  • Isight is used by another app. !!! it's AIM

Ok L & G, not sure if this is the issue but i think the very common message that a lot of people are getting that some other app is using the Isight and we can't use is because (in my poor opinion) ICHAT i linked to AIM, by means that, when you log in to ICHAT which normally automatically, you are also logged in to AIM at the same time which makes Isight logged too in two different locations at the same time, i'm getting a message from AIM that i'm logged in in 2 different locations and if i need to log out from one of them i need to reply to that message by 1 then send !! this is replying to AIM. can some one out there please confirm what i said?! i might be high !!

If you're logged into AIM via iChat, it doesn't necessarily mean your iSight is in use. Also, connecting to AIM with iChat isn't really two different applications/locations.
When AIM says you're logged in from two locations that has nothing to do with your iSight. For example, you sign on your screen name at work and don't sign out (assuming your connection is still active) - you come home and sign in the same screen name - you're signed in from two locations and you'll get that notification. It's also possible to still be signed in from an earlier session if AIM/iChat/Adium/any IM app crashed.

  • ISight camera "in use by another application"

Hello. I'm having trouble using my built-in iSight camera in my brand new MacBook Pro. I can get the thing to work while using iMovie 08, but it won't work with Photo Booth, iChat, or iMovie HD. The very first day I had the computer, it worked with Photo Booth, so I'm fairly certain it's a software problem. I've loaded a ton of software.
The error message I get for iChat and Photo Booth is "Photo Booth cannot open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application." It isn't. I swear.
After reading through a bunch of posts, here's what I've tried:
    1. Reinstalling QuickTime
    2. Updating the OS
    3. Rebooting
    4. Repairing permissions
    5. Deleting the Photo Booth preferences
    6. Zapping the PRAM
    7. Resetting the CMU
    8. Logging in through a brand-new user account
    9. Checking to make sure the camera shows up under the About This Mac/More Info section
    10. Trashing everything I can find related to the HP Scanner software (though I'll need that again in the future)
    11. Getting rid of other devices listed under the Image Capture folder in my Library
    12. Re-installing Photo Booth
    13. Calling Apple Support. They gave up and told me to "archive and reinstall," but after spending several weeks installing software, I don't want to do that. Archiving and reinstalling is a pain in the butt. They also offered to "escalate" the issue, but after 1.5 hours on the phone, I decided to try back another day.
In the meantime, I wanted to see if anyone else had some advice.
It feels like the old days of OS 9 extensions conflicts. But I'm just not sure how to problem solve these things. Like, for example, if it IS a problem with HP scanner software, how do I get rid of all of it? Might it be a problem with having both iMovie HD and iMovie 08 on the same computer...? How can I systematically problem-solve this thing?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, schmargle
I think you are on the right track. The fact that you have "loaded a ton of software" makes me think possible conflicts.
For your HP issue, parkersal's solution at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4246676#4246676 might help you. In addition to some more details about parkersal's tip, you can find some other users' suggestions in Shelia Addison's sightless iSight ... thread.
If HP is not your only problem, your quickest fix may to be an Erase (your entire startup disk) and Install (of the OS.) Update to the latest version, and test your iSight before you install anything else to be sure it works. Then install the additional software you need one-by-one, testing iSight between each one to make certain you know which one is breaking it.

  • Flash thinks that my isight is in use by another program -- when its not.

When a flash page calls my webcam for use (like Yahoo Live), I get the following error: "Camera is unavailable, may be in use by another application." I've checked, and nothing else is using the camera.
I went into the system and found out that the webcam is controlled by the following component.
    System > Library > Quicktime > QuickTimeComponents.component
When I remove the component from the above location, Flash says that there is no webcam. When I put it back, I get the error message stated above.
Now, I didnt always have this problem... Yahoo Live used to work great, but then I installed Skype, and now it wont work... I then uninstalled Skype, removed it from my login items and everything, but still, Yahoo Live wont work. I then tried the something on my Macbook, and the same thing.
Does anyone know whats going on here?
Both my iMac and Macbook running Leopard have this same issue.
Im thinking that the above quicktime component is messed up and needs to be replaced with the original one.. What do you all think?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Hello Brandon
You can use the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to help find the source of your problem and perhaps eliminate iSight as a contributor.
Unless your problem is with iSight itself, your troubleshooting may lead you to the root cause.
Try some other Flash-based video website to determine whether your problem is only with Yahoo or some system component.
Have you tried to configure your "Flash" settings as described here?
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707
If you cannot even get to the Flash settings window, you may have damaged software. Try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
Try a different browser (Firefox, Camino, etc.) to see if your problem might be in Safari.
Have you tried reinstalling QuickTime? Repair permissions before installing QT and again after the restart that finishes the QT update.
If you still believe that the problem is QuickTime related, you might get better help by searching or posting in QuickTime Discussions.
Beyond that, I would suggest that you reinstall all of your Mac's software and see if everything works before you add any third-party apps or peripherals.
Please let us know what you find.
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • Can't disconnect it says that files are being used by another application

i can't just eject it or use the safely remove hardware icon and select ipod. nothing i've heard so far works when i click the usb port thing it jsut says: "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." I've had this problem before and i need to know how to make it safe to disconnect now

I had the same issue with my new iPod 4gb nano. To be perfectly honest, I fixed it and I'm not exactly sure what part of the process actually did the job, so I'm going to attempt to explain it as best I can.
Basically I bought the nano to replace my 160gb classic aka paperweight. I'm currently deployed and the thought of traveling back to the US without a portable music player made me shudder. Within 4 days new nano click wheel decided to do the whole dying thing where I could click the buttons but not scroll through my music/change volume. I took the defunct iPod back to the BX and they exchanged it. I got home and discovered the "new" one they gave me was actually one that had been returned..because it popped up as "josh's ipod" when I plugged it in. So I'm on my third device and you can imagine when my computer informed me said device was corrupt and couldn't be read by my computer..I was pretty peeved. It took 7 or 8 tries to get the new nano update to install on my slow connection and when it finally did..I got the message that the files were in use by another application and couldn't be restored. I restarted the computer, made sure all other applications were shut down, checked my virus software. No dice. I ejected the ipod from my computer, plugged it back in and went into itunes preferences and clicked on "reset sync history". I think at this point it then treated the iPod as if it had never been plugged into my computer before. I then attempted the restore again, it did its thing and I now have a nice, new functioning iPod.
