IChat set-up

I have been tring to setup iChat to comminicate with friend and as yet neither of us can see the other online. When I look at the Buddy List window, my name at the top always shows as available and my friends name is in the list below, but always shows as offline. Where are we going wrong? Surely it can't be this difficult to setup?
The only thing I can think of is that I am using Net Barrier as a Firewall.
Does this matter, and if so, what do I do to get around it.
imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

HI Kinghorn,
There are several things to check.
1) Check you entered the name correctly.
This includes spelling and account type. If you have added an AIM name as an @mac.com name then they will appear Offline.
2) Check iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security Settings.
This should be set to Allow your Buddy.
Select Allow All to test.
2b) Check there is no-one in the Blocked lists.
3) To update the Buddy list with Buddies iChat needs port 5190 open to the UDP protocol.
This will need to be done in any Software firewall on the Mac and in in any router and/or modem.
4) Get your Buddy to do the same.
Note: Allowing Buddies Only in 2) will effectively block those not spelt correctly.

  • Ichat set as "away" shows up as "idle" in gchat (inside gmail)

This just happened to me recently, I'm not sure if I changed some settings or something...
Every time I set myself as away (red dot), my friends who use gchat inside their gmail browser see me as "idle". If I set myself as available (green dot), I show up as green in gmail, which is fine.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? Like I said this is pretty recent, I didn't have this problem before. I've already tried deleting all the preference files and restarting. I don't know how I would reinstall the program if I deleted it, so I didn't delete/reinstall.

    Hi,
Exactly when after you use the Red Away option do your Buddies using the Google Web Mail page for Chat see you as Idle ?
The reason I ask is that iChat shows you as Available but Idle (Amber) as well as plain Available (green)and Away (Red) but not Away and Idle.
You going "Idle" is after no keyboard or mouse Input for 10 minutes.
Some other Clients though show when people are Away and Idle and use the same Amber colour.
In iChat if you Mouse over Away Buddies they sometimes show the ToolTip that they are in fact Idle.

  • Can ichat set my status to invisible as soon as i log on?

Is there a way to automatically set my status as invisible or away when I first logon to ichat?

    Yes.
With iChat Open go to the Preferences > General Section.
Untick the item about Changing the Login to Available on Start up.
In the Accounts preferences untick the Box (whilst logged out) that says Login Automatically (Account Info tab)
Now when you start iChat it will not log in a Buddy List.
You can then set Statuses and such and manually log them in.
Alternatively you can use the Preferences > General section to show the Status iocn (Menu Bar icon)
You can then use this iCon to Login the front most Buddy list with the status you want.
I saw a post recently about also opening iChat with a modifier key but I cannot remember which one it was.
    (this did the same thing)

    Hi
I have a new MacBook Pro and I would like to know if I can audio/visual iChat without paying for special services? I have installed Microsoft Messenger, but I need a Corporate account with them to get video. I also have iChat but my brothers in Canada use Windows platform not Mac. I feel that I am a millimeter away from getting connected but it's that last millimeter that is so '%%%'('( elusive!
Can someone point me in the right direction?

  • IChat tutorial or instruction set up?

Hello guys! Is there any good tutorial or step by step iChat set up? Thank you! Igor.

    Hi,
In words it can be fairly simple.
    1) Register Screen Name or ID depending on Service to be used.
    2) Launch iChat and enter Screen Name or ID on the page for Service to be used
OR open iChat and go to Preferences > Accounts and click the Add ( + ) Button and fill in details there.
    3) add Buddy.
However there are places you can trip up and have Problems.
If you register for an @mac.com name  for instance the password has to be 16 characters or Less.
This is a valid AIM Screen Name.
As it is also a Apple ID you will need to link it to another Email address.
This has to be one that is NOT already linked to an Apple ID
If you are using a Gmail ID then you have to Enable Talk on your Google Account.
An in iChat the Name you enter MUST be exactly as it appears on the Google Mail Web page
(the Mail app seems to allow you to enter [email protected] or [email protected] but it makes a difference in iChat).
    NOTE.
If you have an AIM Valid Name (MobileMe, @Mac.com or AIM ) then you buddy has to as well.  (Any of these would be an "AIM" List)
If you have a GoogleTalk ID or a Jabber one then so does you Buddy.
iChat will not be able to Text chat (Or other chats) to Google/Jabber Buddies entered in a AIM List or vice versa (Adding AIM Buddies to a  Jabber/Google List)
(Video and Audio Only chats are iChat to iChat only for Jabber and Google Buddy Lists)

    Hi,
This is mostly about what is called Away as a Status and setting an Away Status Message when going Idle.
Idle happens when there has been no Keyboard or Mouse  input for 10 mins.
(read as for any Input device like Trackpad, Graphics pad, Trackball etc)
The Bottom section of the General Section of the iChat Preferences is abouut what happens when you go Idle.  (The Orange Arrow and Text in the pic Below)
(Your Status indicator will go Amber)
Some of this does depend if you have Set "Block others for Seeing me as Idle " in the Accounts section > Account Info Tab on AIM Logins.
It is also linked to Fast User Switching (your Mac User Account could go Idle whilst you are Logged in as another Mac User Account).
The Blue Arrow and Text points out you can make sure iChat stays at the Last Status (And Message) you used on Quit (The default is for this to be Ticked and iChat to  change to Available).
The Red Arrow and Text is about whether you appear as Fully Off line on Quit and Sleep.
On Quit iChat does not fully log you out of the AIM Servers.
You will appear as Off Line to your Buddies but the AIM servers will keep Off Line Messages for you (well, if you have never replied "NO" to the first Off Line IM you ever got)
However it does seem that in certain Combos of these settings that you can "Seen" by your Buddies as Away rather than Off line.
Picture of General Section of Preferences
If you add in to this mix a shorter time than the Idle time to make the  computer go to Sleep then you can also create other "states"  as well.
    So...
    In it's default settings:-
    1) iChat will always set you to Available on Launch.
    2) At 10 mins of no input you will go Idle (Amber)
    3) For Fast User Switching you can set iChat to go Off Line or to Go "Away" (A Status Message setting).
(It has been so long I forget what the Default was)
    4) iChat is set by default to show you going Idle (See the Accounts section of the Preferences)
    5) If you specifically set an Away Status (or Message) then iChat will do whatever is set in the bottom part of the General Section.
    6) Sleep will put you Off Line and the "When I Quit iChat, Set My Status to Off Line" option will kick in
The Default is for this to be Unticked.
There is no setting to create going to Away if left alone.
I am not entirely sure on this one though as I think it can be created via "Second Pass" things.
    Note:-
    Example of Second Pass.
Go to the View Menu and the Sort Buddies option.
If you sort by First Name then the Buddy list is likely to Reorganise itself based on the Address Book Entries.
If you now Sort by Availability it will organise those First Names by Availability rather than reverting to what was set before.
(Screen Names Only Buddies will appear alphabetically in any list)
Now repeat by Sort by Last Name then Availability and you will see that the list is not in the same order as First Names and Availability.
At this point I am not sure exactly what you meant.
The Title bit implies that Sleep was/is getting in the way.
The actual question details leave me wondering what you think you have set iChat to do ?

  • I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5 - How do I fix this ?

I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5
Many people are reporting that they cannot add Buddies to either iChat 4 or iChat 5.
The Symptoms are that the Buddy appears in the Buddy List and then does the "Brightening/Fading" cycle but fails to be anywhere in the list including Off Line Buddies.
To Show Off Line Buddies, highlight the Buddy list to bring to the "front".
Then go to the View Menu and Enable Show Off Line Buddies.
(there is also an Option to display these in a separate Group).
There can be many causes and I will attempt to deal with then in the order that they are most likely.
    A) The Contact is already in the Address Book.
When Adding a Buddy via the use of the + Sign at the Bottom of the Buddy List (Then Add Buddy) or invoking it from the Buddies menu a drop down appears to slide down out of the Buddy List Header area
In this slide out/drop down, you get the chance to Add the Screen Name and then the First Name Last Name details of the Buddy.
iChat checks the Address Book and if the First Name, Last Name items do not match any contact in the Address Book already then the Buddy will be added to the Buddy list.
As the Address Book does not allow two contacts to have the same name they will not be added to the iChat Buddy List if the name exists already.
In iChat 3 and earlier there was an Error Message that popped up saying there was Feedbag Error
    See here for More
Note: AIM Protocols call Lists "Feedbags". Contents (Buddies) are "Food" and of course Food is kept in Feedbags.
The Address Book is one Feedbag in this case and the Screen Name (only) Buddy List held on the AIM Server is the other.
The Software puts the two together for Display purposes
    The Fix.
    Either:
    1) Add them as Screen Name only
    2) Use the Arrow head at the end of the Last Name line to open the Address Book and pick the Contact.
    3) Open the Address Book and Edit their Card to Add the Screen Name, then drag them from the Name column to the iChat Buddy List.
    4) During any type of Chat use the item in the Buddies Menu to Add the person (it will display their Screen Name in Dark text if not in the Buddy List - Then item 2 can also be used)
    B) Parental Controls
There are similar Symptoms if the Mac User Account is subject to Parental Controls.
If the Mac User Account on the computer is not an Admin account it is a Standard or Managed one
A Managed one has Parental Controls Enabled.
There is a Tab for Mail and iChat.
If it is turned on for iChat then all buddies are Blocked initially (in iChat 4 Jabber and Bonjour Buddy List cannot be used.)
Adding AIM valid Screen Names (AIM, Those with either @mac.com or @me.com endings) to the allow List Unblocks those Buddies and they will show in the Buddy List as On or Off line
    The Fix.
In this case if you are the Managed account you have to get the Admin account to add the Buddy to the Buddy allowed list in Parental Controls.
    Exception
There is a very large exception.
Due to the fact that the way Parental Controls blocks names until they appear in the Allow List there can be a problem if testing the same iChat Details in a Test Account.
Lets say you are the Admin User on the Mac.
You set up a second Mac User Account called Test.
In this you set up iChat with the same details (Screen name) you use in your Main Mac User Account.
You then test Parental Controls by turning it On and setting the iChat Limit option.
Then you add to the allow List one or two AIM valid names.
You check iChat and find they are the only Buddies that show up.
It works, so you return to your main Mac User Account and discover that most of your Buddies are missing.
On checking the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Security Tab you find the Allow Specific People option is Enabled and the list only includes those Buddies you set in Parental Controls.
Choosing allow All does not seem to bring back the Buddies even if you Log out of the Test Mac User Account.
    The Fix Here
Is to Disable all the Parental Control Settings again (Remove names from any list) before Logging out of the Test Mac User Account.
The cause is partly to do with the Setting in iChat > Preferences > General Section that reads "When I quit iChat, Set the Status to Off Line" which is not the default - leaving a partial login for Off Line Messaging. As a consequence your Buddy List is constantly being told to block certain Screen Names.
A Variation on this is if you have Two Log-ins of your Screen Name from either different apps or computers.
Altering the Buddy List in one effects the other login. The computer or app that was logged in first take precedence.
    C) Adding Buddies as the wrong type (In Buddy List - But always Off Line)
This applies more to iChat 4 than it does to iChat 5
At the Add Buddy Screen/Slide in iChat 4 you have to choose if the Buddy is an AIM, @mac. or MobileMe name in a drop down.
The software shows the @mac.com or @me.com endings in grey in the Screen Name text field and adds this for you.
This can lead to Buddies being added as the wrong type as in ralphjohnsr added as [email protected] etc.
It can also lead to people being added with 2 @ symbols in the Screen Name ([email protected]@mac.com) and iChat not always telling you this is not allowed.
In both iChat 4 and 5, as Jabber IDs/Screen Names also look like Email Addresses, we have to also consider whether AIM names have been added to a Jabber List or Jabber Names added to AIM valid Lists.
    D) Plain old Typos
Here I am talking about misreading someone's Screen Name and typing that in (Such as receiving and email with a Screen Name in it and typing the letter O for 0 (zero).)
And of course, just plain typing mistakes.
The Fix for C) and D)
The Buddy in this case will be in the Buddy List but will always be Off line
Highlight the Buddy with one click.
Do a Get Info (Apple()/Command(⌘) key and I key together) and their Info card will show up.
    Correct as Required.

To Show Off Line Buddies, highlight the Buddy list to bring to the "front".

(there is also an Option to display these in a separate Group).
Do you mean under the {color:green}View{color} menu where I see Show Offline Buddies? (both iChat 4.0.8 and 5.0.3)
A)… In the {color:red}slide out that appears from the top{color} of the Buddy list you get the chance to Add the Screen Name and then the First Name Last Name details of the Buddy.
I kept looking for a button for the "slide out" at the top of the Buddy list. Found out it's the dialog box that appears when you click "+" (Add a new buddy…) at the bottom of the list. Yes, I can act like a beginner too
(Slide out to me sounds like a sideways slide out, versus a Pop Up or Pop Down Dialog box).
    As the Address Book does not allow two contacts to have the same name they will not be added to the iChat Buddy List {color:green}if the name already exists.{color}

  • A selection of iChat Bugs

    Ahoy!
I've been having a selection of small problems with iChat 4.0 lately, none of which are too problematic but they are all rather annoying nonetheless. If anyone has any ideas, then great!
First and most annoying: this has only began in the past couple of weeks, but when videochatting, the picture and sound cuts out for a few seconds at random intervals. The connection doesn't die, the window doesn't close etc. but it just freezes. and it does it a lot! If I keep an eye on connection doctor the bit rate doesn't drop or anything, just the video and audio quality bars drop down to zero for the couple of seconds the picture is frozen. As I said, it happens at random intervals, sometimes it's the person i'm chatting to that freezes, sometimes it's me that freezes for them, sometimes it's both at the same time! It was working fine for me prior to a couple of weeks ago. Nothing is Beachballing when it happens.
Secondly: I can't screen share (or video chat) with one specific person, only when using my Mac Pro. it's a strange phenomena because it worked the first time we tried it, it still works with other people, it works from my old PowerBook on the same internet connection (except the Mac Pro is connected to my router via ethernet) and they can successfully screen share with other people too (including my PowerBook!). Any ideas why iChat is singling this one person out?
Lastly, this is completely trivial but iChat theater has also started behaving erratically since the first problem problem arose too- when I share an image or movie via iChat theater, it usually displays both the picture I am sending and the person I am chatting with in the theater style (and for the other end they get the picture I am showing and still get a stream of me), but instead of it doing that now it just decides to put whatever I'm showing into my video box so they cant see me. It behaved normally again yesterday but continued to misbehave again today.
Details: I am using a four-week-old Mac Pro, connected to the router via ethernet, running Mac OS X 10.5.1. The Mac Pro's IP is set to be a DMZ on the router. My internet connection is my weak point as it is only 1 megabit down and a meagre 256k up, but that hasn't been a problem up until about two weeks ago. I am in London.
The person I talk to most on video chat (who I experience the freezing problem with the most) is using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 on an unspecified New York cable connection- we don't know how fast it is but we do know it's a lottt faster than mine.
The person I have the screen sharing problem with is using a PowerMac G4 MDD running 10.5.1 on a respectable internet connection that I believe to be 2 megabits up and down. They are in the Midlands of England.
I have also experienced the video freezing problem with someone on a iMac G5 running 10.3.9 (i think that was the last panther release at least!) with a similar internet connection to mine. They are a few miles from me in London.
I have tried fiddling with the settings that made video chatting more reliable for me on tiger (changing the bandwidth limit in iChat Preferences, changing the connection speed in System Prefs > Quicktime > Sharing) and have since put it back to what was working for me before these issues arose (No limit in iChat, setting QT streaming to 1 megabit as that's what I have going down) and none of it has really made a difference to how it behaves.
I haven't knowingly installed anything new when these problems surfaced, though I did install some more RAM about a week after the problems began.
So there's a challenge for whoever wants something to puzzle over! If anyone can work out why I'm facing such mysterious behaviour, then points are on offer. Or something.
    Thanks!
    -Ricky

It's time for a bump. My problems haven't subsided since upgrading to 10.5.2.
The freezing problem still exists and I have realised it is with anyone I talk to, so I'm putting this one down to my pony internet connection (though it didn't do it on tiger!). Defcom: thanks for the offer of trying to solve this through a videochat but I shall politely decline- I have a hard enough time talking to people I don't know on the phone, let alone on video chats. :[
The iChat theater problem is the least annoying of them all and I simply don't care about that one any more.
The problem with my computer singling out this one particular person is bugging me like crazy now though- it's not just screen sharing with him, I can't do anything beside text chat (or sometimes direct instant messaging if my computer is feeling like playing nice). I can't do screen sharing either way, no videochat, be it one way or two way with this one particular person on this one machine, though I can on my other machine on the same internet connection. I have been through and meticulously checked for settings that might be different between my PowerBook and this Mac Pro and nothing is different in any of the networking/sharing/QuickTime system preferences or iChat preferences.
Is it worth me filing it as a bug report through feedback with Apple, as it's such a specialised problem (only one person on one computer)?

  • IChat audio/video not working in a particular scenario.

Three differnt people with 3 different setups trying to do an audio chat:
John: MacBook(2.0Ghz, Leopard), connected via AirportExpress, using an AIM account
Anne: MacBook(2.4Ghz, Snow Leopard), connected via a 3G USB Modem, using a .Mac account
Mark: iMac(2.0 Ghz C2D, Tiger), connected via AirportExtreme, using an AIM account
John can voice and video chat with both Anne and Mark, no problem. But Anne and Mark constantly get the Error-8. (But strangely Anne and Mark can share files via iChat just fine.)
If it was a firewall issue, wouldn't one of the three be excluded from any voice/video chat completely ? Im starting to wonder if it's the NAT/PMP issue as well, cause it doesn't seem to be an issue when connecting to the other person.
I have scoured the web looking for a solution but to no avail.
This is a snippet from the error log:

    Cheers

    Hi,
    Re 1)
iChat makes a Connection that is Peer-to-Peer when doing Audio Only and Video chats.
To do this it uses a method of going through NAT Devices (Network Address Translation)
NAT Is not a standard. It is a vague description of things that happen in most domestic routers to share one IP between many computers and other devices.
There are about 4 main ways of doing it See Here
Realistically iChat can be Fussy as to how NAT is done. (Some methods don't seem to "Play Nicely" together)
So you can get what looks like intermittent symptoms.
    Re 2)
I am on a Leopard booted computer and my AIRPORT UTILITY is version 5.5.1
I don't have an Airport Base Station so posting a pic is useless at this point.
The older firmware I am thing of popped up a very small Window asking for the Password before giving you the main window.
The version I have lists the different Base Station it can find down the left with a manual Configure Button and a first time set up button on the right (I forget the name).
It sounds like he has something closer to my version.
The Port Mapping Protocol may be "Greyed Out" if the Device is NOT "Sharing an IP" on the main Internet icon/pane. (On the current version I believe the NAT tab disappears if this is the case).
    Re the Zyxel.
Not particularly iChat Friendly as a range.
There is something about them logging in to AIM on Port 5190 on the TCP Protocol and iChat send files on port 5190 on UDP that these modems don't like (Dual use of the same port)
This may be related to Port Forwarding.
With setting up Port Forwarding you point one port to one IP (Computer) (multiple ports one at a time for iChat)
This means that other computers cannot then use those ports (ports Cannot Be Forwarded Twice).
Not all devices specify Protocols to do this but the Zyxels do seem have an issue with and for some reason this crosses over into A/V Chats.
    SOLUTION
In iChat go to the Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab when Logged out.
Change th Login port from 5190 to 443
This port is memorable as it is below the 1024 threshold in most domestic devices (all ports below this are Open to everyone) and is used by Web Browser for Secure sites (such as Banks and the Sign-in here to post).
It is also used by some mail servers.
    The Modem most likely routes.
    This means two things.
    1) the Airport Base Station should NOT - Set it to Bridge (Off) Mode in the drop down at the bottom of the Internet pane (Port Mapping will not be needed then either).
    2) the ports need to be allowed in the Modem.

Do the pics look like his set up pages ?
Most likely he will have to Look for UPnP - Try the Advanced menu item.
He will not need the Port Forwarding if he Enables UPnP.
He may have set up pages that look more like these pics EQ 660 R
Here you can plainly see UPnP in the middle menu 9At the bottom)
    Summary
Change port for Login in iChat
Set Base Station to Not Route.
Enable UPnP in Zyxel modem. (DO NOT use Port Forwarding despite the Links (they are just for the Pics and Instruction on how to access the device).
If he cannot find UPnP come back to us.
He may have to set Port Forwarding if it is only one computer.
As he is on Tiger he cannot do iChat Screen Sharing so that will not be so much of an issue.

  • IChat quitting

For the most part, I have no problems with iChat, but sometimes, I will try starting an audio or video chat and then iChat will just quit. Nothing is written to the error log and nothing shows up saying iChat quit. Then I will try oepning iChat and it will automatically quit. I try six or seven more times, and it will still quit. Then after opening it for the 10th time, it'll stay open and i can actually log in and chat. Does anyone else experience this? This doesn't happen at my house, but it only happens when I switch to the iSight.

    Hi Dan,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
As strange as it sounds cut the power to the modem for a few secs (10 or so) and restart it.
Are the ports for iChat set up in it ?

  • How do I turn off multiple ichat

I use an iMac and a Macbook Pro....I switched the iMac to Lion a few months ago but just switched the laptop this weekend...now when I get a message on iChat it signals on both computers.
I used to know how to turn it of so that it doesn't go to multiple computers, just one, and now I can't figure out how to get it back to that on Lion.
    Help?

    Hi,
If this is an AIM Name then you could -- if it is an Off Line IM that is triggering the app launch -- stop Off Line IMs at the AIM Settings Page
(in this case "AIM" names include Apple IDs ending [email protected] and @me.com)
In addition to this you can also turn Off  (Un-tick) the box that also deal with this in the iChat Preference > General Section about "When I quit iChat, Set my Status to Off Line"
This also stops Off Line IMs open the app.
    NOTE
IMAgent in Lion (iChatAgent in earlier version) starts when the computer is booted.
It "Listens" at the server for IMs and if the AIM Server is set to Allow you to have them then it will open the App proper.
Both settings will stop the  issue but the iChat Preferences are better if the name is an iCloud issued @me.com one
The later iCloud Issued @me.com names only work in iChat 6 or Messages beta due to a second login to me.com that then allows the AIM servers to "See" the password.
This in turn means the name cannot be used at the AIM Settings page.
Also in the iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts > Account info tab you can untick the "Enable this Account" to Log Off then Untick the Allow Multiple Logins so that only one iChat will login at any one time.
With a Jabber login it is about setting one Login to have a higher Priority than another.
I know Messages does this but I am not booted in to iChat 6 at the moment and can't remember if it also has the "Chat Settings" tab which allows you to set the priority.

  • IChat AV Configuration Window Keeps Popping

    Fellow Mac Users,
*Every time I logout or reboot the computer, when I log back in iChat asks me to re-setup the AV screen.* I essentially have to type my name, and then click next/OK several times (bypassing the Jabber setup and camera test screen) and then it goes away and the buddy window opens.
Since I have iChat set as an auto-launch application thru the login items in System Preferences, this is quite annoying.
Also, once I'm logged in and do this once, I can quit/re-open iChat with no issues, doesn't ask again.
So, I wanted to see if it had something to do with the auto-launch, I removed it and rebooted. When I logged back in and chose the iChat icon in the menu bar and said "Available" the icon went dark with no problem. But, when I tried to initiate a chat or open the buddy list, boom - problem happens again.
The weird thing about it, is that it remembers my AIM user name/password (yes, using AIM user name not .Mac), and buddy list just fine. It's just convinced that I need to re-setup the AV part every time - as if I'm reconfiguring the iSight.
Anybody else have this problem or know how to get around it?

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help: iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes has detected an audio configuration problem

  • IChat not allowing initiate of multi party video

iChat works for me in almost every case...even iChat to AIM...and even when the remote location is behind 2 NAT routers. It has worked between Tiger and Leopard, between Tiger and PC/AIMver5.9, and other scenarios. However, there is now a problem. I can video chat with user B (Tiger, iMacG5). I can video chat with user C (Leopard, iMac). I can make successful video calls to appleu3test01. I can even initiate multi party video chat with user C and appleu3test01. Typically, connections to user B come up at 1mbps (1000 kbps). I CANNOT initiate a multi party video chat with user B and appleu3test01. The problem is if I call user B first, my iChat will NOT let me add appleu3test01. However, if user B initiates the call, it works....but the video quality is not very good. One note, the video chats with user B typically come up a 400kbps. I have Quicktime set to "1.5mbps T1/LAN". I 've tried iChat set to 500kbps, 1mbps, and none. No other problems (so far) using video chat as initiator or receiver.

    P.S.
In addition to my reply about the user B video settings and stacked icons...recall in the original post I noted that user B was able to initiate the multiparty video call just fine, and it worked. This would require him to have the "stacked camera icons", I think. In any case, he did show stacked icons when I initiated the video call, which connected to him just fine as the first participant, but then iChat would balk at my attempt to invite the next participant.
One thing that may be useful is that the message whe I tried to invite the last participant was that the participant was already in a chat...however the last participant's icon was showing as "available" for multiparty conference (ie; stacked icons). Maybe this indication was simply wrong and the last participant may have already been in a chat, especially since that participant was the "appleu3test01" user, which I imagine is very busy
If this is the case, it's just frustrating that iChat would show the user as fully available for multiparty video chat.
