Ichat smiley faces in snow leopard

hey all,
i searched but couldn't find a topic about this anywhere, so i thought it would be appropriate to make a new post.
sometime after i installed snow leopard i noticed that smiley faces now appear in the preview bar (like before you view a message, ichat gives the persons name and a little preview of the message) which is great, but then when i look at the message i dont see the actual image version of the emoticon, just the semi colon and parentheses or whatever they sent. hopefully i made this as clear as possible. do any of you know how i could fix this? obviously its not a huge issue but its a bit irritating.
thanks everyone

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
I am not sure I have it totally.
Are you saying that when you get a Text Chat Invite - what you can see of the Message may include a Smiley that appears in Picture form but when you open that the Text only shows the text form of that Smiley ?
Do you have Show Smiley's Off in the iChat View Menu > Messages sub menu ?
I thinks this may be a quirk between the Invite settings view and the options not to Show Smileys in the Menu mentioned.

    Welcome to Discussions, Stanley Chung
Sorry you are still having problems even after trying the good suggestions from Ralph and Boomer.
I did not see specifically from your posts that your iSight worked before upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I am inferring from your topic's title that it did. If your iMac came with Snow Leopard installed, please post and tell us whether you erased the disk and reinstalled all your iMac's software before you started using it. If you upgraded your iMac to Snow Leopard, consider the following.
    (1) Until you get iSight working, do all your testing while no peripherals other than keyboard/mouse are attached to your iMac. To eliminate all possibility of any conflict external to your Mac, be sure you also disconnect any wireless devices (iPod, printer, etc) connected to your system.
    (2) If you still have problems with all you have tried, it seems to me that you must have a software issue. You might try uninstalling Skype and VMWare and testing again to see if those installations are causing a conflict.
    (3) Check the support sites for all of your third party software to be sure there are no known Snow Leopard issues and that you are using the latest compatible versions.
    (4) If the problem still exists and you have not already tried this, reinstall Snow Leopard, repairing permissions immediately before and after the reinstall.
    (5) If your problem remains and System Profiler still shows your inbuilt iSight as a USB device, I suggest you backup all important files, erase your disk, reinstall all Apple software, and test to see if iSight works properly. Once it does, you can install any necessary peripherals and third-party apps one-at-a-time, testing after each addition to see if one of them is causing problems.

  • IChat 6 (Lion) on Snow Leopard?

I use screennames with AIM, Yahoo! IM, and Google Chat.
iChat 5 (for Snow Leopard) didn't support the Y!IM, so I used a different client to manage all of my screennames at once (so I didn't have to use multiple programs at once).
I'm currently running Snow Leopard (10.6.8); is there a way to get the lastest version of iChat (the version included in Lion) ported back to Snow Leopard, so I can use all of my screennames/services with iChat?

    Hi,
Each version of iChat and it's Updated versions, such as iChat 5.0.3, are OS specific.
With the exception of the first issue of iChat 2 which will work in Panther and the last Update of the OS before that each matches the OS as it goes.
iChat 3 only works in Tiger.  By the time the OS is updated to 10.4.11 iChat has reached 3.1.9
It is similar in Leopard where the OS reaches 10.5.8 and iChat reaches 4.0.9 (or 4.0.8 depending where you look at the app)  iChat 4 will not work on Tiger.
iChat 5 is Intel only and certainly cannot be installed on a G4 or G5 computer.
At this point the Frameworks include IMCore and some of the support achitecture is moved about.
In fact no matter which OS level you are at if you Reinstall iChat you have to Also Run the COMBO version of the Last OS Uppdate you did to Update iChat.
TO be clear, if you have a DVD Install Disk for Snow Leopard issued when it came out, the iChat version on there will be the base iChat 5.  IF you have since updated to 10.5.8 then iChat will have been updated but the reinstall will have "Backdated" it to version 5.  Software Update keeps receipts of what it has done so you manually have to run the Combo to Update the reinstalled iChat
It goes without saying that iChat 6 cannot be installed on Snow Leopard. (I also tried so I know)

  • Problem connecting iChat client 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to iChat server (Lion)

    Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to the Lion server, but it's all working fine with my Lion client(s) so far
However, my wife's best friend's MacBook is still running Snow Leopard ( and she is not willing to upgrade her MacBook as of now due to severak reasons) and I'm trying to connect her iChat client from Snow Leopard to the iChat server running on my Lion server.
If I try to set up the account manually in the iChat client, I can't find an option for Mac OS X Lion server and trying a work around with the Jabber account settings didn't work either (on the server's log: credentials failed). Then, I tried to create a profile on the server and downloaded it to the Snow Leopard system, but it wasn't recognised (in System Settings, there is no Profile option ).
So, can someone please, please, please give me any idea about it or is it simply not possible to connect a an older iChat client (5.0.3, Snow Leopard) to the latest version of the iChat server (Lion) ??
Again, any idea is very appreciated!
    Many tx in advance.
    Cheers
    Kai

    Hi there,
A simple suggestion , please make sure both MacBook Pro clock and the server clock are the same meaning the hour/Min/ sec both should match. A least difference of 3 seconds is fine.
I had faced this problem in many place and only solution was to match the time and it will bind immediatly.

  • IChat not working in Snow Leopard- is there a solution?

I've been reading the previous posts and am not sure if a resolution to this problem was found.
I am unable to iChat between to me.com accounts. It says "starting video chat" indefinitely.
The Router in COnnection doctor says: Port Restricted. Is this something i need to change? I am using port 5190, with SSL UNchecked. Server says "login.oscar.aol.com".
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Change the Port to 443.
You have to now hit enter when you have changed it.
I had to turn SSL on first before mine would work (I Turned it off afterwards)

  • CS2 Snow Leopard compatibility?

I've searched without success whether Photoshop CS2 will run with Snow Leopard.
I'm on an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB installed memory.
    Thanks for your input.

Duane, nice to hear that your CS2 is working.
Your info is coming out a little at a time.
Did your computer come with Snow Leopard, if yes, you  will not be
able to load Leopard unless you buy a retail copy.
However, if you don''t use the fonts that are affected then you can
    stay the way you are.
    I also use Quark.
I went back to Leopard because SL created conflicts with Helvetica,
Helvetica Neue, Futura and other fonts.
Out of 32 weights of Helvetica Neue, I could only use 10 weights.
I lost the use of all my condensed faces.
Snow Leopard creates conflicts with a number of fonts.
    Check these links.

You should also do a search for SL font conflicts for additional info.

  • Ichat no longer works with snow leopard

i recently installed Snow Leopard on my macbook pro and ever since, when I try to open iChat, a window opens and says "You can't use this version of the application iChat with this version of Mac OS X. You have iChat 4.0.8. I thought that the new version would have installed with Snow Leopard. What do I need to do?

    Hi,
    Go to the Applications folder.
Do you have two versions of iChat in there ?
If so, Click on to Highlight it.
Use the Apple Key (CMD) and I key together (Get Info)
In the panel that pops up what version number is it ?
What is the version number of the other one ?
If one is iChat 5 and one is iChat 4, drag the current iCon for iChat Off the DOCK and let go. (Puff of Smoke animation)
Drag the iChat 5 icon to the DOCK (It does not move the App just links to it.)
If you only have iChat 4 then post back and let us know as there will be more steps.
Please note the time of my post as I may not reply for some time.

  • IChat Inline Images No Longer Working After a Fresh Install of Snow Leopard

My roommate and I share the same computer network and iChat through Bonjour. This is mostly for us to drop data to each other as we both work - urls, images, etc. He upgraded to Snow Leopard as a completely fresh upgrade and reinstalled his existing software with no new software added. As soon as he upgraded, he could no longer receive inline images from me, and he has to go into the file transfer window to see the images. I can see inline images from him with no problems. I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard at this time. How do we fix his image problem?

I have not set my Snow Leopard computer to Not Start Up iChat if it is Quit (unstarted on computer start up) when someone IMs me. (Off line Messaging.)
I get sent a File when I am Off line on a Sunday if I miss a particular group chat on Saturdays.
I never seem to get a Chat started as this Group Chat has finished.
The Last Group chat I was in though does pop up as per my Setting for Saved Transcripts.
It is a File not a pic.
It is not "in a Chat" either.
I am not sure how close my situation is to what you describe as to Closed Windows for the Bonjour Buddy list or other factors (there is no Off Line Messaging for Bonjour but the Buddy List Window can be closed)
    I regard it a a partial replication.
    It may give clues.

  • Can't Star iChat Service after update to Snow Leopard Server

We had installed Mac OS X Server on a Mac Pro, and we had the iChat Service working in the organization; but when we update to the Snow Leopard Server we can't start the iChat service again. In the Server Admin app, on the iChat node in the Overview I have this:
    iChat Service is: Stopped
    Start time: not available
    Domain: not available
    Client connections: not available
With the update if I choose the iChat service node, I can't see the Start iChat button.
    Can somebody help?

  • Major issues with ICHAT in Snow Leopard

I upgraded my computer to Snow Leopard just recently. Had issues got them fixed and now have worse issues. I could use my iChat yesterday and now all of a sudden when I try to sign in it says I don't have any accounts set up in iChat. When I try to go set it up and hit the + key to add my account it does not let me. Yesterday when I tried to screen share with my boss. It kept closing iChat and said unexpected error. I'd hit reopen and try it again and iChat would log me out. Now I cannot even get on iChat or setup my account. Please help

    Hi,
Since you set up iChat and possibly the Mac User account you are logged in with have you enabled Parental Controls - either in the Mac User Account or with the same iChat Details in a Test/Second Mac User Account ?

  • FACE TIME with new Snow Leopard

I am currrently running Leopard 10.5.8 right now and i tried to download FaceTime on my computer...but found out that it doesn't work....because you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard?... so if i get the upgrade.... will it install smoothly? and let me run FaceTime with friends from over seas (Asia) without any problems?...Any issues with FaceTime and running the new Snow Leopard?... I need all the info before running out and buying the upgrade...thanks

    Hi,
It is Intel Only (As In only works with Snow Leopard).
Reports here vary mainly because people come here looking for help so it is a some what distorted view. (we never get to here from people who had no issue setting it up).
Some have reported issues trying so set up "accounts" using Apple IDs they already use elsewhere.
This may centre around the issue of using one Email address as th ID/Account emails and using another for people to Call (it's a bit like an Alias situation).
Search for "Facetime" in the iSight Forum
Same for the "Using Snow Leopard" Forum
This is where most have been posted.

I bought a new router - Netgear WNR3500L. I had a dlink. The problem is now when I click to open iChat, I don't see any of my Buddies in the window and shortly thereafter, my iChat quits. I have a G5, running Snow Leopard.  My firewall is off.  I'm not savvy to how the settings should be. Help please!

Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
    Log back in again.
And turn your Mac's firewll on and add iChat.
