Ichat starts than dissapears
ichat starts up checks for my web cam and then it acts as if it crashes but the crash message never comes up. The arrow under the ichat program goes away like I had never started the program. Then I restart ichat and it acts as if it had never dissapeared and picks up in the middle of signing on. Then it dissapears again. After three or four times I have logged on and the program works. Any idea why it acts odd like that?
Hi John
iChat sometime does this but it can be difficult to guess as to why.
Evidence from previous discussions suggests that either the app has developed a problem or it can not see the support folder properly.
The thing to do is get Terminal to open iChat and look at the log that is created.
Copy and paste the bold text below into Terminal (applications/Utilities) and hit enter.
/Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
This will get Terminal to open ichat and create log in the Terminal window.
IF iChat launches normally Quit iChat
Either way copy the log here.
Quit Terminal.

Well I'm a frequent Firefox user ad recently my cursor has started to dissapear when I'm not moving it. However when i press a key it flashes back for a second also, when I'm moving it flickers a lot (one moment its there one moment it isn't). How do i fix this?
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== Earlier today (july 20th 2010)Never saw this problem until today, first on Facebook, then on these Mozilla support pages. I had one Firefox window with multiple FB and Mozilla tabs open.
Here's my observations: On the FB and Mozilla pages, the cursor (arrow/hand) acted identical and as described here, would disappear after 2-3 seconds of inactivity or non-motion, then instantly reappear with mouse movement or key strike but only momentarily if no further motion/action occurred. Interestingly, I also had one FoxNews tab (actually FoxNewsInsider) open, and observed slightly different activity. The Cursor/hand would disappear as described above, but instead of staying invisible, it flashed on /off for what appeared to be <1 second on then <1 second off, until mouse movement or key strike. Now, here's the really interesting part ... When I opened a second FoxNewsInsider tab, the problem corrected itself with no direct action on my part to resolve the issue. I was going to close all tabs, then Firefox and perform the system reboot to correct this annoyance ... but, still have not seen the problem.
Okay, I'm not going to say viewing FoxNewsInsider webpages not only provides one perspective on news, and the added benefit of fixing cursor/hand problems .. but maybe there's some to being well informed ... Sorry folks, couldn't resist ... :) I will be watching for the disappearing cursor issue again, and will reply here with any updates or changes in my observations. -
ichat starts to open, lingers a second, then 'unexpectedly' quits. I'm in Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I can't find the ichat plist in the library, even though I've custom re-installed (even the hard way) and downloaded the latest upgrade. Que pasa?

Hi all,
Ive just went wireless a couple of days ago and everything was going great on the install side of things, it took me while but Im managed to complete port forwarding and configure me my osx firewall and hey presto ichat started up. But the next day nothing, ichat will login then log out seconds later. Ive also got a jabber account but this seems unaffected and logs in no problem.
I have had one successful login but my buddy list vanished it was only a mate of mine texting me that made me aware it was up and running.
My router is a Netgear WGT624 v3 with firmware updated, can anyone give me any advice on what might be going wrong, its driving me crazy! I use ichat alot for my freelance work so this has left me feeling a bit stranded.
Ive installed the latest secruity update too could this be the cause? Now try turning UPnP on and off a couple of times(clicking apply each time) finish with UPnP on.
Also set the Quicktime settings, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed set what you get from your ISP go no higher then 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
Restart iChat.

Why won't iChat start hidden?
It's a small irritation but one that's been with us since the very start: I have iChat in my list of Login Items with the Hide checkbox checked. iChat starts all right, but the icon goes into it's hidden (dull) state for a fraction of a second during iChat start up before iChat bursts into life and onto my desktop in a decidedly unhidden state.
Aside from assigning iChat to a distant desktop using Spaces, has anybody actually cracked the simple-sounding problem of getting iChat to start and stay hidden?Hi,
Try also Hiding iChatAgent.
iChat Also "Remember" where each window was when iChat is Quit.
Closing A Buddy List Window (Red Blob Button) does not Log that Buddy List out but "Hides" the window. Therefore iChat will start up with no windows on show.
There was a thread recently where someone was having problem with iChat and Spaces.
Something about the way iChat is means that even if in another Space a New Invite arriving brings it to the Front and Current Space as well.
This may have been to do with Chax (an iChat Add-on that can set any iChat Window to be "Always in Front").
It may also be to do with the Dock and this being in any Space.

NALEXPLD starts and Start Bar dissapears.
Hopfully someone can help me out with this one, mainly because it has been
a problem for a little while now.
We have Zen3.2 installed on all the servers and we have a range of clients
from 4.83 SP1 all the way to the new 4.9 SP2.
On some servers we had the Nal files (NALNTSRV, NalExpld, Nalwin32 etc etc)
all with different dates and times. So some servers would have the date of
the 28th and some would have a date of the 14th. This meant that when users
logged in they would constantly get "Application launcher has updated and
requires a reboot", because they switch between servers it meant that there
was no way to fix.
So I decided to try and copy one set of files to every server, making all
the computers the same. I chose the newest files I could find on the
servers and copied them around to all 150 odd netwere servers we have.
This morning we come in and some computers come up with the usual
"Application launcher has updated" and asks for a reboot and all has worked
fine afterwards. However a good 25% of the computers that we have showed a
different problem.
Some computers the refresh of nal never finished, it just sat there
spinning away. After a reboot it seemed to work fine.
The more interesting one is that when they login, the start bar is visable,
then when you expect it to ask you to reboot because the application
launcher has updated, the start bar dissapeares and the computer sits
there, as if waiting for something. Some computers a reboot fixes this
problem, some computers it does not and we get the problem with comptuers
with no start bar. However all the computers have different versions of the
client installed.
Has anyone come accross this problem before?

IChat starts but nothing else happens, no windows just greyed out menus
iChat starts but nothing else happens, no windows just greyed out menus
Dunno what it is, i would live it on all night and the next morning i see beach balls and have to force quit it, then when i start it nothing happens, i just see the menus on top, i am forced to restart the computer just to get it running again.
Any advise appreciated.Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions
iChat does not close when you use the red button to close windows as some other apps do.
This means iChat can be running but not showing any windows (including any Buddy Lists).
If you set up iChat it will have at least one Buddy List.
Open iChat and go to the Window menu
In here you will see any Buddy List that is Logged in.
Selecting that item or using the keystrokes next to it will show you the Buddy List.
In Tiger/iChat 3 Apple Key and 1 would open the AIM Buddy List, Apple + 2 the Bonjour List (If active) and Apple + 3 any Jabber Buddy list.
As Leopard allows you to log several Screen names in to AIM or Jabber the list can be as mixed up as you want (or Created)
The Order can be changed in iChat menu > Preference > Accounts by dragging the list into the order you want.
My Window menu
The Accounts Prefs List

I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

Automatically Launch iChat plus another application when iChat starts
For all the Terminal/Automator/Apple Script/know-more-about-OSX-than-I-do people out there:
When I launch iChat I would like Skype to also launch, and the same for quitting. Is this possible?
I'm using 10.6.2 if that helps.
Thanks,
-RoyI have something similar that I start from an alias on my desktop. As it is right now it opens iChat and connects, connects to Skype, opens a series of webpages in tabs in Safari, and checks my mail.
It doesn't quit these apps but it would be easy to create a second application that quits these programs. Check out the example at http://www.atpm.com/15.11/speakable.shtml That workflow doesn't have the Skype commands in it but here is what I have currently using the following actions:
1. Connect to iChat
2. Login to iChat
3. Set iChat Status
4. Launch Application - Choose Skype
This is saved as an application that I trigger from an alias. Because it is an application a keyboard command could be assigned to it.
It would be easy to add a second workflow that quits the applications using a couple of Quit Application actions. I didn't build that part because I usually leave these programs open all the time while I am working.

Have no windows open when iChat starts.
I recently had to do a full reinstall for my G5.
I don't recall this being a problem before then.
When I start up iChat (after rebooting, whatever) it opens the buddy list PLUS empty windows for any chat I had going when I last quit.
I think before, it'd just open the buddy list and no empty windows.
I'd like to get back to that if I can, but I don't see a preference for it..
Help?Hi,
I am glad you found the answer.
However the Chat windows should not be empty.
The should contain the last chat you had with the Buddy it was with.
However this does depend on you Saving the Transcript(s) (Also in Messages)
(Note to Self - try this without Save Transcript On)

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat" -
IChat starts and then quits right away...
The title pretty much says it all....
I start iChat/Tiger up and and I see the iChat window briefly (say, 2 seconds or so) and then the application disappears. It does not give an error message and it's process is most definitely dead when I check Activity Monitor. I should note that the iChat previously worked without any problems.
Interestingly enough, it looks like it does successfully log into AIM, because after trying to start the app 10 or so times, I got an AIM message saying that I've attempted to login too many times in too short a period of time.
Any idea what's going on? The only event I can correlate is the fact that I downloaded the newest Tiger security update this past Monday...I believe that is the only change to my computer since it was last working.
Any help is greatly appreciated!Ralph,
I have the same exact problem on two brand new macs, a mac mini and an ibook g4. I tried reinstalling ichat, which made it worse; my buddy list would no longer open, instead, the little black arrow appeared under the ichat logo, and then disappeared after a few seconds. I then copied and pasted that command into the Terminal app, and here's what I got:

Hi
We've recently had a problem with iChat and file transfers, I took at a look at this yesterday and came to the conclusion from looking through the logs that there was a DNS issue.
It looked like it was a reverse DNS issue, so I added the reverse DNS record and tried again. I am not entirely sure how it happened but the start button for the iChat service disappeared. I deleted the com.apple.ichat.plist file, refreshed my services in Server Admin and it came back.
Now however, the service has stopped itself again, the 'Start iChat' service button has disappeared again and none of the fixes I've seen in the Apple Support Communities seem to resolve it.
I am really at a loss.
The server in question is a MacPro5,1 running OS X Server 10.6.8
Thanks in advance.Hi
There is nothing trouble for webservices when the server is restarted.
can you please explain in detail
Kind Regards

IChat starts up when iPhone or camera connects
iChat keeps starting up when I connect my iPhone or camera.
I unchecked the box in the preference panel so it shouldn't start up...
Who has an idea??Go to your apps folder and start image capture and go to its prefs and see what it set to open.

I updated my I pad yesterday with the ISO 7.04 . Now it just has a black screen. When I hold the button on the right hand down for 10 seconds, I first very briefly get the Apple Logo, than immediately the I-Tunes sign with a plug sign. I cannot get anything else working. I did not have I-tunes on my i-pad since the file is large, but have it on my MAC . So how can I get my I-pad working again????
This solved all my problems. It took a while, about 87 minutes for the complete "restore to factory setting" and after that about 30 minutes to put all my contacts etc. back on.
It did'nt matter how long it took, I have my I-Pad back and that is great.
I really do appreciate your help. Thank you so much.
