IChat Status Oddity...

Hi Everyone,
I'm online with my office (I telecommute) and my office manager mentioned something to me and I want to see if anyone else here has had this happen. On the iChat application at the main office (Version 3.1.9) if I change my status to an Away the status message will change, but the status bubble does not change from green to red.
I am using version 4.0.8 and the bubbles and messages are working properly on my machine here in my home office.
Any ideas what might be going wrong here?
Matt

Hi,
At the moment there are about three thread that have reported something along these lines from it being Only ichat that does not seem to show to Buddies the Status change to the "Symptom" you describe that is probably related.
It seems to coincide with AIM updating the PC version of AIM on the 19th June 2009 (dated for future readers)
This probably included a server Update which will be at the heart of things.

  • Setting a user's iChat status to available using Apple Remote Desktop

    Hi,
I have a couple of users who routinely forget to re-set their iChat status to 'available' when arriving for work and opening their laptops. (Of course, iChat usually fails to set their status automatically, even though that option is checked).
Is there a terminal command I can issue to do this for them from ARD?

osascript -e 'tell application "iChat"' -e 'log in' -e 'end tell'

  • Bonjour iChat Status in Mail

    Hello,
I am currently in the middle of testing Apple Mail for work, hopefully no more Entourage soon!
We also have iChat setup thru Bonjour for interoffice communication. Is there anyway to get Mail to show the iChat status of users in our Bonjour buddy list? When looking in Address book there is no option for Bonjour when setting up a buddy name.
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you. I have that selected, but when I have iChat open with my Work Bonjour Buddy list and then have Mail open with View >Columns>Buddy Availability on I still do not see their status.
So if I "Mike Smith" at work has iChat open and then sends me an email, the Buddy Availability Column in Mail next to his name stays blank.
I know this functions works because I have it setup at home with Mail and iChat but my iChat account is AIM. At work we are using Bonjour.

  • IChat status change not seen by other users

    Hi !
I have inherited a small network
I have a Aple Intel Xserve running 10.6.6 which all users are connected to
This has the iChat service set and running
All my users are running systems with 10.6.8
When some users change their status in iChat, this change is NOT being seen by the rest of the users
I cannot see any errors been highlighted in the logs on the server so assume the problem is with the client.
I can see nothing in the logs on the client.
Is there any diagnostic tools for iChat or should I be removing some plists on the client to solve this problem?
    Regards
    Tony

    Hi,
As it is an X Server and therefore is likely to be iChat Server that you are running (Or another Jabber server) then I would delete to com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist and then restart the client iChat to refresh the Login.
Regarding your additional post I do seem to remember another thread where people could change there Available Status (to one with a Message or back to Available  -- actually check this last statement) but not to Away.
At present as I type the answer to this escapes me.
This bothers me as I thinks I either had this issue myself or could replicate it.
AS  they could have the Bonjour List and the Jabber server list showing can you check they have turned Off the Bonjour Option.
I see you have already posted in the Server Communities as that would have been my next suggestion.
If this then appears to "solve" it check again with the Bonjour Buddy List showing but check if the setting is to have the same Message for all Buddy lists  (I am not sure that iChat 5 can do this actually).
Edit See the iChat Preferences > General Section  deselect the Use Same Status for all Accounts
The client users may find it's about trying to change the Status from a Buddy List that is not the "front" window - particularly if the Bonjour window is open as well and linked though having the same Status message.
(dismissing a Buddy list using the red button to left only hides the window so some people may have more Buddy List open (Check the window Menu or the App menu > Accounts)
    EDIT.
removing all the .plists on the client's computer "Might" do it
Deleting and reinstalling iChat "might"  (I can't remeber what the default for the Use same Status item is so it may just get reset)

  • Editing iChat status menu doesn't show in menubar icon

Instead of having various status menu options ("surfing the web", "at home", "out to lunch", "in a meeting:", etc.) I prefer to edit the list down to just "available" and "away"
When I edit the status menu from the buddy list drop down (by deleting the other options) my changes are reflected in the buddy list. However, the menubar icon still shows all of the preset options "surfing the web" etc.
Does anyone else notice this? Is this expected behaviour?

I later went into my com.apple.iChat.plist file and found two variables - "CustomAvailableMessages" and "CustomAwayMessages". After deleting all but the first blank line, they went away. (Make sure you make a backup!)
I also deleted them from com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist file.
It was tricky, but I finally managed to get it so I only have available and away (in addition to the current iTunes song) as away messages in my menu bar. After I deleted the above, I had to go in and delete my custom edited away/available messages in the buddy list menu.
MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A BACKUP OF THOSE FILES BEFORE YOU TINKER WITH THEM. You can use TextEdit I believe, but I use PlistEditPro to edit them.

  • IChat status changes to running app!

    Hello all,
Suddenly, iChat (v4.0.8 (619), Leopard 10.5.7) has started changing my status to whatever application I run or switch to. It flips between "Finder", "Safari", "iChat", whatever!
Has anyone seen this behavior? I didn't "set" it, and can't find anything to un-set it... I thought it might be that I had recently enabled the iChat plugin of Quicksilver, but disabling it didn't fix the problem... I really don't want this "feature"...
    Thanks in advance!

I have it book marked from some time ago when the issue was more prominent.
Realistically it did not feature in that many posts and peoples own descriptions of what they see/meant does not always match what others report so matching search can be difficult.
As you report it has been updated it may have had that feature for some time which is why reports have dropped off.
    Glad you are sorted.

  • Changing iChat status with applescript

I have the basic commands to change the status in my iChat (v 5.0.1):
    tell application "iChat"
set status to away (or available)
    end tell
When I set my status as "away" everything works fine. The green dot turns red and the status message says away. But when I try to set it as "available" the dot turns back to green but the status message still says away. I have tried the command
    set status message to "Available"
and that works but when I try to set it as away, the dot turns red but the status message still says "Available". So I tried the same command to change the status message but with "Away" instead when I wanted to change it to away and it worked, then I reversed everything to available and the status message would change but the dot would stay red. I wouldn't think it would be this hard. Any ideas? Thanks

Seems to be working today. Though it takes a while for the status message to change to available, but it is working

  • IChat status

    Hi all.
I communicate with 40 different Macs with different os X versions. Everything worked fine until last week.
As soon as anybody's status buton changes (from green to yellow or red)if I want to initiate a conversation or if someone else on my list wants to contact me: I must re-boot iChat.
    Does anyone have a clue?
    Thanks!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi there!
This seems to have been an issue for about four weeks. It's not your computer -- it's some sort of issue that has occurred with AIM's servers. Not sure if Apple or AOL needs to make a change to resolve the issue, but neither party is acting quickly to do so.
You can see various other reports in threads such as this one:

  • Ichat status notifications

I've been using iChat for some time now with Chax to consolidate my AIM, GTalk, and Facebook chat. Only recently, I've started seeing pop-ups showing my friends status (i.e. "JoeSmith is idle") I've never seen this before and I haven't made any changes to my settings. I can't seem to get the pop-ups to go away. Any ideas on how to approach this? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Go to iChat > Preferences > Chax
    Turn of the Growl Notifications
You may well have turned this effect on in Growl itself. See System Preferences.

  • IChat server admin Service Running, status not available

    X-Serve running 10.6.8
I noticed the other day thaat when I look at the iChat service in Server Admin, I observed the following:
    iChat service is: Running
    Start Time: Not Available
    Domain: Not Available
    Client Connections: Not Available
The log screen says No Log Files exist
I have seen similar screens when there was a slight lag in server admin gathering information to display on screen.  This stays this way indefinately.  The service is working as far as I can tell, IE people can log in, add each other, and chat.  A log file is in fact being used and updated (/var/jabberd/message_archive/)
I noticed this because I was trying to autobuddy.sh, I script I use often to update when I add new users to the organization so they show up in everyones group list.  I attempted to stop the service from the command line using:
    #:serveradmin stop jabber
    #:jabber: state = RUNNING
and was never able to stop iChat.  The system behaves the same after a reboot.  I am not sure what to do, or what the actual problem is.  The only thing besides a reboot that I tried was a permission repair from within the OS.
In the log below I removed some user specific information because they are user names for users on my network.  This server and service is internal only.
the console logs I have this:

Any help on what might be going on or a push in a direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well I searched the forums here and I found some similar issues, however the fix's I was directed too did not resolve the problem.
I did notice this today after reading a post regarding the use of the .local domain name, and fixing that fixes this issue:
When i selected my server on the left hand side of server admin, click on settings at the top (the gear) then on Network, I see:
    Ethernet 1 (eth0) IPv4 192.1.1.4 Aphrodite.local
I am not sure where the .local is coming from.  This is an internal server and has been configured with a FQDN for 2 years now, aphrodite.cotaoil.net.  On the server, the only other place I see the .local, is in system preferences, sharing, at the top it has my fqdn, but when I click on edit, it has a local host field that says Aphrodite, with a .local greyed out after, or ghosted.
When I use the command changeip -checkhostname I recieve:
    changeip -checkhostname
    Primary address     = 192.1.1.4
    Current HostName    = aphrodite.cotaoil.net
The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.
    dirserv:success = "success"
the hostname not available message is new (well I know at some point in the not too distant past I did not have this message) so I am not sure if an update broke this or not but basically I am not sure where to go from here.
The DNS settings are set the same as they were when I originally set up the server.  Reviewing DNS logs, I do not see anything abnormal.
additionally when I run scutil i get:
    aphrodite:~ root# scutil --get LocalHostName
    Aphrodite
    aphrodite:~ root# scutil --get ComputerName
    Aphrodite.cotaoil.net
I am a little stumped as to where to go from here.  I believe based on some other posts Ive read that this may have something to do with why I cannot see any iChat status and am recieving the dreaded "detailed service status not available until network configuration completed"
Thanks for any and all thoughts.  Currently reviewing Hoffs tutorials, but I used combined Hoff tutorials and apple server guides when originally set up the server.  Please let me know what I did wrong (besides my internal IP range)

  • IChat changing Status on its own

I have now had a number of events where I set my iChat Status to "Away" or a custom "In Conference", and it shows that on my Buddy List, but the rest of the world sees something different.
When they then, based on what they see as my Status, invite me to a video chat, I can look at my Status to see that it has been changed to a Red square icon and the word "Available next to that, WITHOUT ANY ACTION ON MY PART. My status has change to something other than what I set it at.
My buddies see something other than Away or In Conference. My Status on my buddy list is different than what my status shows on their buddy list. How can that be???
It happens often enough that I have taken to using the Invisible option to avoid misleading them. I should not have to do this.
    Is anyone else seeing this?

    Hi grandpa,
Yes Unfortunately we know about this one.
From any AIM logged in Screen Name changing the Status Message in the Buddy list does not work as it should.
You see in your Buddy List what you chose.
What Your Buddies see is the Last Message (if there was one) and the last Status colour.
So you can get it to Show a Message of Away but with a green Available Blob.
You can also do it the other way.
    Two main work arounds.
In Leopard setting the stats in a Jabber or Bonjour Buddy list works as they all display the same.
For Snow Leopard and Leopard using the Menu Bar incon to set the messages works.
