Ichat stopped working

i do not see any of my incoming chat messages. i can send. when i quite ichat and restart it, i suddenly see the messages i had been missing. i had AIM on my ipad and even when i was signed out, the messages went there, even when i deleted my account in the program. so now i have deleted that program. but, although i have restarted the computer and tossed the preferences, i am not getting any incoming messages...thoughts? thanks.

Hi,
When you say you had AIM on the iPad do you mean you used the same Screen Name there ?
Have you tried turning On the option to Allow Multiple Logins ?
Try turning this On then Off again (iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts)
You should (possibly) get a message then saying whether or not the AIM servers think there is a second Login.
Answer with a 1 (type 1 in the text field and send it) and this will log the other Login out.
Logging in to the AIM web site in a web Browser with your Screen Name and then dismissing the page will leave you logged in for their default period (which is two weeks).
If you were using AIM Express the same will apply.
(it's one of the things you can change in the settings here after you Login)

  • IChat stop working with Bonjour when parental control was enabled

    Hi,
I'm wondering if someone could help me out with this issue.
I am running Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
When I enabled Parental Control, iChat stops working on bonjour account, is there a way to fix this or is there a work around.
    Thanks,
    Mindy

For some reason at present I can not get Bonjour to work properly between My Leopard computer and my Tiger one.
Having Looked at Parental Controls I do not see that this is an iChat Issue.
Look at the Way the computer/account is allowed to share files with other computers

  • IChat stopped working last night on iPads and Mac

Last night, while using iChat (beta) on my MBP to a friend's iPad, it studdenly stopped sending.  She called me to tell me that she suddenly couldn't send from her iPad, so I tried from mine.  She can't use iChat on her iPad, I can't on mine, I can't send to iPads or iPhones through iChat on my MBP, but I can use it and chat fine to a PC with a google account.  It stopped working, then briefly, it worked, then it stopped again, and hasn't worked for any of us since.  iPhone to iPhone works fine.  I've gone all through the forums here and haven't seen any buzz about something being down.   Any clues?

    HI,
    iPhoto  - Photo Stream.
I had a dial up email account that has been my Apple ID for a long time.
Last year I used this to create an iCloud ID for my iPhone as it went to iOS 5
This gives me two "names" to access the account if I use iTunes or the App Store.
They work as individual Names for iMessages and FaceTime.
I am the person in our house that inherits the old  phones at update time
I gained a second iPhone 3GS and I did have the two names split between the two phones.
With iOS 6 I did get the offer to include the Apple ID (iCloud version) to be added to Messages on the Mac (along with the second iPhone Number) I thought I had declined but it does actually appear in the Messages Accounts for the iMessages account although Unticked.
This led me to check which iPhone was using which part of the Apple ID's "Names" and I found one phone was not syncing iPhoto's Photo Stream.
I had thought it was because I had messed up the name somewhere.
I have checked whilst writing this and have had to time Machine some folders back that went missing in iPhoto (only my Daughter's wedding !!!).
Seems it is something I did on my Mac ??
I thought I was on to something that was going to be more helpful.

  • Screen Sharing in iChat stopped working

To begin with, I have iChat 4.0.3 but I do not see any categories for that version.
The screen sharing feature in iChat was a really great tool that allowed me assist my family from remote locations to help them trouble shoot issues on their Macs. This feature mysteriously stopped working after the release of the 10.5.3 Mac OS X update. Prior to that, the feature worked perfectly and was able to connect each and everytime after all the proper settings were configured correctly at each end. Now, the feature does not work at all in iChat. I have confirmed and I am able to use the screen sharing features in "Back to my Mac" so I can still screen share with my desktop at home when traveling using my laptop, but I cannot screen share trying to connect using iChat. I have double checked the proper settings for sharing and those are good, I have double checked the settings in Quick Time preferences and those are set to 1.5 Mbps T1 as suggested. I have also gone back and applied the 10.5.3 combo update to both my laptop and the iMac that I am trying to connect to. The router settings have all been verified and the ports are open. The firewalls are all set and both allow connections using iChat, File Sharing, and Remote Log In. Still, after all of this, the screen sharing feature in iChat will not connect and results in a timeout error after about 15 seconds. Is this a known bug in 10.5.3 and can I expect some relief in the next update? Are there any other tricks that may be applied? This is a feature I relied on pretty heavily and now it is gone. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
I have read several posts regarding the issue of screen sharing in iChat not working properly and I have tried every solution offered in those threads and none of them have worked for me.

Upon further testing with a different iMac user I was finally able to determine that the problem is router related. I am going to go back again and double check the port settings to make sure they are configured correctly. The router that is giving the problems is a Linksys router and the router that tested fine is an Apple Airport Extreme router. I suspect the LInksys router probably needs to be tweaked further to get it to work properly.

  • IChat stopped working on BT Home Hub

    Hi
I have been video iChatting with my parents in Spain using my BT Homehub for a few weeks but now it has stopped working? As far as I am aware neither myself or my parents have changed any settings.
I've read the problems on the forum and I now too get the error 8.
Is it worth buying a new router?
    Thanks

I see I missed a big NOT in the previous post.

  • IChat stops working from the start. Help me!!

After using mac for about 1 month, my iChat starts this problem. Every time  I open iChat and try to change the status, the app stops working and not responding at all. How to solve this problem???

    HI,
OK, it sounds like the app at least Launches.
Can you access the Preferences ?
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts can you enable as many accounts as there are there including the Bonjour one ?
You should have at least two Buddy list show up.
From what you say at least one such as an AIM (Or Jabber) login is reading "Disconnected" and not doing anything when you click to change this.
Does the Bonjour one display fully, even if you have no Bonjour Buddies On line on your LAN  (It is for connecting to other Macs that have iChat/Messages with the Bonjour account active.)
If there are no such Buddies it will display as an empty Buddy list but should connect and say Available.
In System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Firewall tab, is the Firewall ON ?
If it is On go to the Options Button and check the "Allow Signed Software" item is ticked and that iChat and IMAgent is in the Allowed List.  (I am working in Mountain Lion and yours may only have an Advanced Button.  Go there and see if you have).
Do not have Stealth enabled as iChat sends Pings in Video and Audio Only connections.
Basically if other apps like Web Browsers can get on the internet we have to look as to why iChat is not doing this.
Enabling the Bonjour account will tell us if it is a local issue or and Internet one.
If it looks like it is between the internet and the app then the Firewall is the first port of Call.

  • Camera in Ichat stopped working?

I'm using a mac mini computer , mac os 10.4.11, ichat 3.1.9. when I first open Ichat I don't get a picture of my self in the preview window, the screen is just white but the camera turns on, I get sound but no video. Ichat has been working up until yesterday (4/13/08) I'm able to see my Ichat buddie but he can't see me and we here each other just fine. I've made no changes to my computer except for updates (quicktime player)

Ralph, I am using the Microsoft Xbox live vision camera. It is plug and play so I did not have to install any add ons. I remember having a little trouble getting it to work initially (trying different USB slots, making sure I had the latest iChat software update, etc.) but I finally got it to work. Don't ask what made it work,I don't remember. Since then it has worked every time without a problem. I could initiate a chat or accept one from someone else. Mysteriously it just would not work the other day. Also, now, when I open iMovie and try to use the camera, it says there is no camera connected. This camera has a light that shows when the camera is on. In iMovie I can not get the light to come on, but in iChat the light comes on when I use preview or I am on a chat.

  • IChat was working... now it's not??! (Chat ended with error -8)

I've been able to chat with my friend for a long time with no problems, but the other day iChat suddenly stopped working. The only event that I can think of that happened before iChat stopped working was that my weakish wireless connection to my router downstairs gave out, and I got disconnected for a moment. She has a Linksys WRT54G and I have a DI-624. Just to make sure we reset her router, made sure UPnP was enabled and put on all the proper port triggerings, but it still didn't work. Before I didn't need to do anything to my router to get it to work, but since nothing else was working, I added the port triggers to my router as well but it still hasn't worked. Also of course, all the proper ports are opened in our firewalls.
I just find it very strange that It would be working fine, and then suddenly stop working. Here is all the data from the error.

    Hi Zaxxon,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
IF you are you using UPnP then you don't need to set other means of opening the ports.
The D-Link 624 does not like UPnP on see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93333

  • IChat suddenly stopped working

I'm on an iMac 2.8ghz Intel Duo running OS 10.4.10 connecting via Airport
After 2 years (on my iBook and then my new iMac) the iChat suddenly stopped working properly 2 days ago. It allows me to see the people in my buddy list but when I ring them for a video chat, they can't see my ringing to accept, and when they ring me, I can't see their invitation. Sometimes I can text them, but it's only worked a couple of times and then not for very long.
I thought perhaps there was something wrong with the program on my iMac, but it does the same thing on my laptop.
I called my ISP thinking it may be the modem. We reset the modem and made sure the firewall level was set to OFF, but still no difference.
I tried some of the suggestions I read here in the forum such as changing the Quicktime speed and making sure the bandwith limit was set to None, even downloaded the newest version of Flip4mac.
I'm totally baffled. I can log on, see my buddies and they see me, but we can no longer chat or IM.
    Thanks for any input.

  • IChat screen sharing stopped working

Me and my girlfriend have identical Macbook Pros, and we've been utilizing the screen share capability of iChat for about a month and a half now. Today her capability to screen share stopped working. Nothing has changed recently, we haven't changed any system settings (that we know of) my screen share is still an option, but her screen share is greyed out. Screen sharing enabled is checked on her video option so we really have no idea what else to do. Any ideas?

    Hi,
She should do a Speed test
http://www.speedtest.net/ (Use the Yellow Star in the main window)
Are the reported speeds near what she pays for ?
(they are typically shown at about 80% of what the ISP claim to supply)
Try cutting the power to the computer, any router and modem then start them up Modem first, then router then Computer, allowing things to be come established at each device and see if things improve.
If that does not work she should delete com.apple.ichat.plist and then restart iChat.

  • IChat Video Stops Working

    Hello
I just upgraded to Leopard doing a clean install. I went to try a video chat with someone and it would not connect at all. So I went to try the test name appleu3test01 which also failed to connect.
I use a Westell 2200 modem with static NAT on to forward all ports my computer. I have tested to see if all ports are correctly opened, and indeed they are. I decided to connect using PPPoE directly from OS X and video started working! However, after a few hours, I went to try again and it failed.
Why would this randomly stop working like that? Even if I don't use the computer it stops working after a few hours.
What could be causing this randomness? Oh, I have the firewall set to Allow all incoming connections, too.

    I figured out the problem!
Turning off Internet Sharing resolved the issue and allowed me to connect properly. I know this is not a work around everyone can do, but it works. We shouldn't have to turn that off, though. =[

  • Since last update, sound on my Logitech Quickcam fusion stopped working?

In iChat ,I noticed that since the last apple software update the sound on my Quickcam Fusion stopped working only the video works.. I noticed that under preferences, video, then microphone, it is no longer listed as a USB device option. Only line-in is present.
I suspect it has something to do with the last software update from Apple. I think the details had mentioned that they changed something with USB security??
I would like this camera to work since I just bought it and it was working 2 weeks ago!
    Thanks for any help.
Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   latest version of iChat AV

New Audio Update toady for me.
Although this was on my MacBook Pro that I have just reinstalled the OS on.
(I can not find it in downloads. Strangely it has appeared after the 10.4.10 combo Update)
It may also pay to start up GarageBand odd as it sounds.
Also go to Applications/Utilities and open the MIDI Utility and make sure the setting is set to 44100

  • Safari stops working.  Mail won't work with Safari running.  Now iTunes can't find my phone.  If I restart and do one thing at a time it helps but still not reliable.  All software on my iMac is up to date.

I have a new iMac and iPhone 4.0.  All software is up to date and I have installed the free beta version of Mountain Lion which let me use iChat on my computer.  Safari intermittently stops working.  Mail won't access my mailboxes if Safari is running.  Now iTunes won't find my iPhone when it's locked and in a dock charging.  If I restart I can do 1 thing at a time, but I can't have Safari running and use Mail.  I've emptied my cache, checked my passwords.  It's none of that.  By process of elimination, there is some kind of conflict between using multiple applications on the Internet at the same time.  Sometimes after I've gone to several Internet sites Safari will stop working properly even though all other applications have been "quit".

Oops. You installed the beta Mountain Lion on your main hard disk? Usually most people install it on a secondary or external hard drive. Your situation should actually be posted on the Developer web site for Moutnain Lion and not here. All I can suggest here is to run repair permissions and restart. Sorry.

  • Speech Recognition stops working after a minute of nonuse

I'm a grad student trying to keep from exacerbating my carpal tunnel and just figured out how to use the voice commands on my macbook. So far, they work great, they hear my voice, it does what I tell it to do, and I'm not constantly hitting apple+tab and apple+c and apple+v and so on, which really helps my wrists!
BUT. If I go for more than a minute or two without using a voice command, it stops working. I can't pinpoint anything else that triggers it other than if I stop using it for a little bit while I'm reading a paper or something. The microphone is calibrated and working, the little black arrows and the blue and green bars flash on the widget like it hears me, but then it won't give me the sound that says the command was recognized and it doesn't perform the command any time I try to use it again after a few minutes of not being used. It's like the recognition part goes to sleep and won't wake up.
If I go to the system preferences and toggle Speakable Itemst off and then on again, it starts working again until another minute or two of non-use. If I use spoken commands constantly, it will stay on for a good long while, but I'm not using it constantly that's the end of speech recognition. I really can't stop to just tell it some unneeded command to keep it awake all the time! Eventually, the computer gets confused if I turn the "speakable items" on and off too many times from the System Preferences, and it gets confused about whether or not it's turned on or off, or the widget disappears but the System Preferences panel thinks the Speakable Items is on.
I read somewhere that other people with a newer OS have a similar problem if they don't use the default speaking voice, so I switched to Alex and restarted, and the same thing is still happening.
I'm running 10.5.8, and using safari, word 2011, preview, nothing too crazy. My speech recognition is in "Listen only while key is pressed" mode, and like I said, works great until I stop using it for a minute or so. I'm using the internal microphone on my MacBook (dob circa 2008). Any tips on how I can actually keep my Speech Recognition useful? Thanks in advance!

OK, I have one more question now, seems to be the same as this question which was never answered years ago:
Speakable Commands>Application Switching -- how to delete items?
When I click on the triangle from the speech command widget and open speech commands, there is a TON of stuff there that I'll never ever use, but these things do not appear in the Library/Speech/Speakable Items folder so that I might be able to delete them. For example, one item I'd like to turn off is just the word "Home" and the computer keeps thinking that I said "Home" instead of whatever else I meant to say. Another keeps opening iChat or Mail, when I say "open new window" or something like that. I tried clicking, control clicking, option clicking, nothing will highlight a command in the Speech Commands window so that I might delete it.
The "Home" command only shows up when I'm using Word, in the "front window" list. However, the Application Speakable Items/Microsoft Word folder is empty. Is there some other way to get into the speakable commands list and weed out unwanted stuff?

  • My applications always quit...iChat only works for 4 minutes at a time HELP

ok so i bought leopard today
i installed it but i skipped that step when leopard checks the volume of your comp or whateever (not sure if that will affect what im about to say)
now i have leopard...i love it but my applications just KEEP quitting out and my iChat only works for 4 minutes and then my friends stop recieving my messages
should i uninstall and re install?? how would i go about doing that??
    anything just please help

One possibility is that your hard drive is failing. If you don't have backups of any data you don't want to lose, that needs to be your number one priority. Get that data backed up. Once you have done that, you can start exploring options.
Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive and take a look at the SMART status:
If it says anything other than Verified, the drive is definitely failing. If it says Verified, all that means is that it isn't failing in a way that the drive can detect.
