IChat talking to AIM

I have a mate who has just bought a PC with XP - he's using NEW AIM (which he's just downloaded from the AIM site).
I have a Mac with iChat ... works really well with other iChat users (my Router is a DG834 - so no silly port business!)
I can chat using TXT with my mate - but we cannot use the Video function to see each other.
Does iChat work with AIM - or deos he have to download the full blown AOL 9.0 for us to do the videao thing?
Thanks in anticipation!
Bob

Hi Green, Bob,
He needs AIM 5.9 (not 6.0)
He needs to "tune" it to his Mic and camera
He needs to Enable it through the XP firewall if he has Service Pack 2
Longer version of info
http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html
Of course if he has a modem that does UPnP then that should be used to open the ports in his device.
In your Netgear leave it in the Default UPnP mode.
Go to the WAN set up page on the modem.
Disable DOS (uncheck the spot)

  • IChat 5 to AIM (Any version) frustrations

This has been driving me insane for a week.
I can connect PC to PC on AIM for video conference. I can connect Mac to Mac for an iChat conference. They work when both computers are on the same office network. They work when one of the computers is remote, so it even traverses our firewall and routers without issue. Under no circumstances will an AIM to iChat video conference fully connect.
I've used multiple computers, and no computer has a software firewall enabled. I have tried AIM 5.5, 5.9, 6.5, 6.9, and currently have the latest 7.2.61 installed.
Here is a trace from a PC initiated Video Chat request (it ends with "There was a comm. error during your chat" on the Mac, and the PC remains sitting on "Waiting for Buddy Confirmation"):
Sorry about the ludicrous length of this log file...

It in fact seems to have gotten more difficult as time has gone on.
iChat 3 to AIM 5.9 or 6.1 seemed to be the best it ever was.
This is about as much as we know to try
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
AIM on the PC uses port 5190 to Login, as does iChat (both Default settings)
Both can have this changed to port 443 - AIM uses it as "Fall Back" port if a firewall or router does not have the ports open.
AIM then goes on to use a random sort of port between port 1024 and 5000
These ports have to be opened in any routing device.
The PC firewall since XP service pack 2 has required you allow Exceptions through the firewall (any NON Microsoft app) and preferably also turn On UPnP hare as well so that any routing device can also use UPnP.
The SIP connection Process is supposed to "Negotiate" the ports to be used.
It usually or rather used to show on the Mac end and using the ichat ports (in ichat 3 Audio and Video where on 4 different ports in and out - 16384-16387 as first choices.
In later versions of iChat (4 and up) Video and audio is on one and it is used for both In and Out (port 16402)
However I use Little Snitch and this does not seem to be constant now and iChat will connect on seemingly random port if UPnP is used.
Your Log shows both ends moving ports during the connection Process.
In fact one part of the Log says this
133429.692851 Remote party is using AIM 5.9 client.
    133429.692935 =========== OpenPorts!
It suggests that the ports are not open somewhere.
    This info is also important
    133421.158867 CommNAT result:

    CNAT_PATINORDER .... 1
    CNAT_BLOCKIP ....... 1
    CNAT_BLOCKPORT ..... 1
    CNAT_LOOPBACK ...... 0
Your routing device is not Full Cone (0) which is iChat's Preferred stated method of doing NAT in iChat 5
(our belief is that this is always been the case but only iChat 5's Connection Doctor tell us this).
This is not to say other methods don't work.
My own routing Modem says it is Port Restricted and does fine for iChat to iChat Video (it's a long time since I did an AIM/PC test).
The detail also suggests ports are blocked.
I ma also not sure of the significance of the ports listed at this stage.
However the log also does not seem to state it is mapping those to 16402 (and down to 16393 as it start top down).

  • Having trouble connecting to AIM on iChat, adium and AIM

    hi guys,
as the title states, i am having a **** of a time connecting to ichat through my wireless connection!
i recently moved and have a new ISP provider (qwest). i have contacted them regarding port forwarding/firewall settings and they assured me that there is no problem with their modem. i tested this out by connecting my macbook directly to the modem, and i was able to connect to ichat.
next, i adjusted settings on the motorola wireless router (model wr850g), turned off the firewall, port forwarding, UPnP! this didn't help at all. i contacted motorola and they assured me that it was not their product that was causing my connection problems and it was the settings on my mac.
now, i have been able to connect to ichat when using a linksys router right out the gate, so all the firewall settings that i adjusted in the system preferences was new to me. so i followed all the directions there about sharing and firewall and performed all necessary steps, and i am still having problems.
i am able to browse the internet, but things like azureus, ichat, adium, and aim are not working.
before i contact apple regarding this issue, i wanted to see if there was anybody with the same type of problem. i have searched the forums the past 2 days and could not find anything regarding this problem. please help.
the model of the qwest router is
    actiontec gt-701
    motorola wr850g
    thank you
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi mrayatpa,
Both these devices have variation model numbers on this Page
    http://portforward.com/routers.htm
It would be best if one was not doing DHCP.
Preferably the modem should have DHCP turned off then the router should be set to ask to use a Static IP to the Modem.
This will stop the computer being in two DHCP subnets that overlap and is probably the cause of the problem.
As iChat uses ports above 1024 that need to be opened or allowed this needs sorting.
Web Browsing and mail apps use ports below the 1024 mark and are not routers as such hence the reason the work no matter what the set up is (or how many subnets are involved)

  • IChat with MobileMe + AIM, SSL

I posted this some days ago in the MobileMe forum. I got no answer there, but I think this one should be the more appropriate place to ask about an iChat issue...
One of the potential benefit of setting up a MobileMe account in iChat is the fact that one can have an encrypted audio/video chat. Which is great.
However, there's a quirk, in my view. If I understand correctly, Apple creates and maintains an AIM account (on AOL servers) which has the same ID and the same password of the MobileMe account: which is not so great, but let's go on.
When setting up a new account (of the "MobileMe" kind), iChat, by default, connects with the AIM server without using ssl. This has nothing to do with the audio/video chat which could follow: this is just the initial authentication on the AIM server, and if I'm not mistaken the MobileMe password is sent in the clear. So it's all good and well to have ssl by default on www.me.com, but if you configure a MobileMe account in iChat you send out your password to potential eavesdroppers.
    Is this the case?
Please note that I know that I can force ssl in the iChat options. What I'm pointing out is only that this is not the default behaviour.
Moreover, the first connection is made by iChat immediately after having entered the MobileMe username, without waiting for an explicit user command. Even if you do not enter your MobileMe password, iChat gets it from your keychain.
In other words, it seems to me that configuring a MobileMe iChat account implies sending out your MobileMe password at least once unencrypted, unless some convoluted tactics are adopted to stop iChat from connecting.
    Is this the case?
I hope someone could confirm or (better) tell me I'm wrong here.

    Hi,
On the issue that Apple Creates the AIM Accounts for you.
I have only found this in one Apple Document which suggested the same by the way it was worded.
Due to the fact if the Mobileme (Or @mac.com servers) go down iChat or any AIM app cannot check your password and sign you in the process if obviously different.
It seems that in all cases where AIM have agreements with Service like Apple or ISPs that their servers can check the names and passwords at the various servers involved
The other thing about this is that Apple allow passwords longer than 16 characters.
Using the first 16 characters only does not work which would be the simplest way the method you suggest would be used.  (you have to change your password)
I have done a partial test of your other issues.
I Opened my iChat Preferences and created a New account and chose MobileMe
I did not enter a password and clicked Done.
At this point iChat displayed a Buddy List and immediately a Dialogue  box asking for a Password.
Like the name I chose something fairly random. The Save to Keychain was not checked.
On Pressing OK the Dailogue box reappeared with the Save to Keychain ticked. I dismissed it.  (I checked the Keychain later and it was not Saved there)
In Accounts I went to the Server Setting tab.
It was set up wihout SSL being On.
That needs to be reported here http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html  (And have further testing with a registered name)
In all my other accounts I have set up in iChat no Buddy List Window has appeared, saying it is Connecting, until I have pressed the Done Button.
I also know that if you delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and then restart iChat then your Accounts info is pulled back from the Keychain.
Deleting com.apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist will cause the Start Up Screens to reappear
This in the AIM options the "first" AIM valid Login details will be Prefilled.
From this I can see that if you have a MobileMe Name and it is use on your Mac somewhere then entering it in iChat may cause the password to be "collected" from the Keychain.
You can still decided to remove it before pressing Done.
The Account will not even try to log on until you have pressed the Done Button.
I tried also to set up an AIM name (I happened to have one not used on this computer)
This did not have the password in the Keychain for any other purposes so it was not pulled up.
The Buddy List did not appear until I pressed Done.
In fact the Add Account pane had closed and the Buddy list said Connecting before Little Snitch told me iChat was connecting to AIM (Again).
This means at no point did my fictitious @Me.com name Buddy List actually make contact with the AIM servers
I checked the Server Settings for this Account and this was a NON SSL login as well.
This surprised me as I seem to remember that the default was for SSL to be Enabled on it's introduction via Upgrade from iChat 3 (I am using iChat 4 on this computer).
You do seem to raise some valid concerns.
I have yet to test in iChat 5.
You should use the feedback site to raise these further.

  • WILL AIM iChat work with AIM Triton for PC?

I see RALPH's how to and his summary notes advising that AIM PC will not work the AIM Chat.
But is this the case for AIM's new TRITON? My friend has downloaded TRITON. He is able to invite me to chat with AUDIO. Triton activates my iChat asking me to ACCEPT. I accept. iChat thinks and then tells me the PC user DID NOT ACCEPT, yet the PC user is given a MESSAGE advising both SYSTEMS or USERS are ready to chat.
    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

    HI Gordon,
I have heard there is this new item Triton.
I have yet to see anyone post that they have had a succesful Audio only chat.
I see that is only Beta.
    Also
    Q. What hardware is required to run AOL Talk?
    A. The user must have a microphone and a set of speakers attached to their computer. AOL Talk allows users on Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh computers to hold one-to-one conversations. Multi-way conversations are currently only supported on Microsoft Windows XP.
This does not say what App the Mac user should be using.
The AIM for Mac has never done Audio or Video chats. I can see nothing that says this is going to available for Macs. That would suggest iChat as being the application.
I would spend some time checking that Beta site for info on Ports and connection issues.

  • Kicked from ICHAT, but not AIM

hen I do not restart my router every day I consistently get kicked off ICHAT every 3 - 15 mins unexpectedly with a message stating something like, HOST cannot connect to server. During this time my internet is working perfectly fine, however when I power on/off my router Ichat will work fine for the remainder of the day, but must be powered on/off the next day and thereafter
On XP through bootcamp, I have not powered on/off my router the past few days and I do not get kicked off AIM or have any internet trouble. I talked to my internet service provider said my router looks fine as well as my signal........

  • Why can't I log into my ichat account through aim even if I know my password and my internet is fast?

I was talking to my friend through ichat then I went to get breakfast when I came back my internet disconnected after I fixed it, my ichat would not work and wouldn't let me log in.

    Hi,
What have you tried so far ?
Is this an @mac.com or MobileMe name (They are valid AIM Screen Names as well) ?
Have you been asked to changed your Password over the weekend ?
Did you make it longer that 16 characters ?
I take it you seem to have the Internet back ?
Have you tried Quitting iChat and starting again ?  (iChat can be a bit like this if the Mac went to Sleep).
Have you tried restarting the Mac ?

  • Multiperson audio chat with Mac/iChat and XP/AIM buddies

Looking at using a G5 for video-conferencing. I should be able to set up multiperson video chats with other Mac/iChat buddies.
What happens if an XP/AIM buddy wishes to join the conference? I expect they wont see a multiperson video display like iChat but can they audio conference with everyone? Can they video conference with the host Mac (my G5)?
One day I will talk them into buying Macs!

    routing iChat for AIM
I have a Mac Pro with both ethernet cards connected. ethernet zero is connected to my office network and ethernet one is connected to a back channel DMZ. I do not have Access to the office router and it's been configure to prevent chat. I have added routes to the table for ethernet 1and am able to chat through AIM with my wife on the iMac at the house with no issues. However when I establish a video connection it errors out. I've made sure that I have both the initial and establish connection IP's routing through my back channel. But it doesn't seem to work. If I turned off the office LAN, I have no problem connecting using video chat.

as I said I can still chat, I just cannot use video chat unless I disconnect the office network. I need to leave the office network as the default route. Suggestions would be appreciated, not sure if iChat problem or routing problem.

    Umm,
Not so much as a Bug but a feature.
iChat has been designed with a level of security in-built.
When you send a Visible Invite it is just that, away to trigger the other end to pop up a window.
iChat then engages in the SIP part which includes a text based connection method called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).
This involves a behind the scenes invite and a check to see that the IP the Visible invite went to is the same one the SIP bit ios going to. (remember you can log in as many times as you wanton different apps and computers to the AIM servers), but is essentially to make sure you are connecting to who you invited.
This SIP Process is very much like an old fashioned operator call in that you call the operator they call the operator at the other end who calls the Buddy, he answers his operator who confirms he is willing to chat... etc.
As with a telephone call you want to make sure you are talking to the right person.
Like a telephone iChat has to be in "one place" in relation to the internet.
Unlike a corner plot house it can not have one "number" in one street and another in the side road (even local authorities and postal service ignore this).
The process in other IM apps is mixed.
Skype spreads it's connection over as many hosts as will accept them meaning your call could be using 30 or 40 other end users to spread that load.
Of course this also increases the ports in use giving you less security overall.
Some do seem "better" at ignoring secondary connections the way Web Browsers do.

  • Can't iChat With My AIM Buddy

Since upgrading to iChat 4.0, I can't chat with my buddy using Tiger who has an AIM screenname.
What's the first thing to try to rectify the problem?

    Ok,
What account type do you have ?
    Is it @mac ?
    Is it paid for ?
Have you checked the Authorization is still current ?
    If not @mac have you tried deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist for Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences ?
This will also lose bubble colours, font choices and Alerts plus Saved Status Messages.
    Restart iChat.
Make sure port 5190 is open to the UDP protocol in your routing Device if using Port Forwarding.

  • Open iChat instead of AIM from Safari?

I would like to know how I can get iChat to open instead of AIM, when I click on a link from a webpage that will allow for chatting? Everytime I do this, Safari automatically opens AIM.

Or you could use RCDefaultApp and change it

  • IChat and AOL/AIM Login Information

When I log into iChat it brings up the bonjour list. Then when I change the option to my email address it prompts me to log into an AOL Instant Messenger account. When I type in my Apple ID and password it says my login ID or password is incorrect. I don't have an AOL account or login so I'm not sure what I should be putting in there. I have used my iChat before with no problem. Even though it has been over a year since I've last used it, it never asked for this type of information before.

    Hi,
iChat was originally an AIM client  (Joined the AIM service)
You could use an AIM name or at that time an Apple @mac.com name.
    Later MobileMe issued @Me.com names
These stopped on the 30th June 2012.
iCloud issued @Me.com have somewhat replaces MobileMe but you have to register.
This may mean you have an iCloud issued Apple ID which you are using in iChat 5 or earlier - And it will not work.
It may be that you have set up a new password with more than 16 characters (AIM Server Limit)

I've been scanning google and everywhere else for tips on this but no luck. I am using iChat with a logitech quickcam pro 9000 and attmepting to do video chat with friends on aim 5.9, 6.0 and 6.5 and they can all get audio and hear me, I can hear some of their audio as well. however, they get a black screen and cant see me. Is there a fix?

    Hi,
Ecamm are normally fairly good with their Camera Guide page
This device has been known to be a bit flakey since the UVC (USB Video Class Spec) was added to the OS at 10.4.9
Most reports the Audio does not work properly.
IS your System Preference > Displays set at Millions ?
Have you Repaired Permissions at all ?

  • Ichat/login to AIM too often

I continue to get an error message from iChat that i have logged in to AIM too often in a short period of time and need to wait to log in again. When i wait, I can occassionally get in, but then I get kicked out again and start the process over. Has anyone else had this problem? Any settings that might help with this?
    Thanks
