Ichat theater - no audio ?

today i watched a movie using ichat theater.
it is .avi and works on my laptop and it worked on the app, too.
but when it started, i unplugged my headphones, and the audio stopped.
then i closed it, and shared the file again. this time, the audio didn't work at all.
i re-lauched our AV conversation and shaered the file once more. i plugged in my headphones. audio, then no audio.
i tried a third time, keeping the headphones in and it worked fine.
why was this happening?
also, the other person and i could hear each other talk through all of this and the video quality was good as well as audio (when it did work).
and i just now did some software updates, but are there ones for ichat that going to apple>software updates won't bring up?

Hi,
My Headphones have a 3.5mm jack that cuts the Audio Line Out circuit when the jack is inserted.
Do you have a 3.5mm headset or are we talking about a USB connection ?
If USB it will show up in System Preferences > Sound > Output as a separate item and also in iChat in the Video Section.
If you are then "changing" outputs you need to change the choice in both places.
The other possible is that it is a protection factor as you insert or remove the Headphones if a 3.5mm jack

  • IChat Theater - Audio not working - (Final Cut Pro 7)

    Hello Forum
I just installed FCP 7 and am trying to get IChat Theater to work. The video comes through fine, but I don't hear the audio of FCP. Any ideas why? The audio of the mic comes through, we can have a normal chat conversation but the audio of the playback is just dead.
My setup (I am the editor):
    FCP 7
    OSX 10.5.6
Mac Pro (early 2009) without Video Camera, only mic
    My client's setup:
    OSX 10.5.6
Macbook Pro with camera and mic
Do I need to have a camera installed on my mac pro?
    Any insight appreciated.
    Thank you
    sk

    Hi Meatpuppet,
I'm having the same issue with not getting my audio through to the client on Ichat theater preveiew. I'm on a mac pro with a small DV camera attached via firewire. when I start the chat, the person on the other side sees and hears me fine, but then when I start sharing in FCP, the video switches so that the remote person sees the time line, but loses the audio from me and doesn't hear the audio from the time line...
The manual recommends "disconnecting and external video device" ( then what do us mac pro folks do?)
So my question for you, and I know that you're on and Apogee Duet, is: Was your tinkering in FCP, your system sound settings, or iChat? in other words, where was the disconnect?
    thanks.

  • Ichat 4.05: Why can't I share an m4v file in ichat Theater?

I was trying to share a video that I purchased off of iTunes via iChat Theater, but all that appears is a gray screen. The file is an MPEG-layer 4 video file labeled .m4v. I checked to make sure that it was compatible with QuickTime (as that is the only outline set forth for video files in iChat help). Does any one have ANY advice on this issue?! It is frustrating, because the reason I bought the video on iTunes was to share it, and now it doesn't work! I tried converting the file using iSquint (a third party program) to no avail! It confuses me because the 'logo' of the file, unlike other mp4s, looks like an audio file (uses the itunes logo), instead of a video, but as I said it plays fine on iTunes, QuickTime, and my ipod. What is going on here?
    Thanks!

This turned out to be a case of asking the wrong question.  Our file server was changed from an AFP to SMB but the problem I was having was due to the fact that folder names had also been changed (dog knows why). Makes me wish there was a way to delete the whole question.

  • IChat Theater Balks

I am thrilled with the idea of iChat Theater, but I'm having performance troubles with it and I'm trying to figure out whether
    1. I'm expecting too much of it,
    2. I don't understand how to use it properly or
    3. My internet connection is not up for the task.
I'm trying to screen a long show for my client via iChat Theater. Everything starts fine, but after a few minutes (I haven't timed it to see if the time is consistent) the connection fails. I've discovered that when this happens my phone loses it's connection as well. Both internet and landline are through Comcast cable. I'm not on the phone when the failure happens, only after. I have no browsers or email clients running either. I've tried this with the sequence and with a re-imported QT Ref of the sequence.
I have never known my phone to drop its signal, nor do I often knowingly lose internet connection. Is it possible that by streaming for an extended period I'm creating some sort of logjam on my pipeline (terrible mixed metaphor, I know) or something? Would pausing every minute or so help? I'm not sure what sort of diagnostics I could run to figure out if there's an issue with my internet provider. I did run a few online bandwidth tests and I'm getting between 3 and 4 mbps upload.
    Martin

OK, I think I have this figured out ... here is what I have found.
For one, my phone line, connecting my DSL had come loose during some renovation we are having done on the house ... this was causing my overall Internet connection to fall to a dismal 1700 Kbs (down)/77 Kbs (up) ... the 77 Kbs is below Apple's minimum required 128 Kbs bandwidth for iChat Theater and iChat Screen Sharing.
Once this was solved, my ability to operate both functions, as described by Apple, with a remote user running leopard, worked as expected!!!
So some of my problem was related to low network bandwidth.
Now, regarding the disabled screen sharing, using iChat, with a computer on my local network ...
Screen sharing appears to work just fine from the finder, for a local computer, but not through iChat.
This does appear to work ok though with a remote user.
I am guessing this is because two local machines are sitting behind the same internal router, hence sharing the same external IP address ... although Text, audio and video chat do work this way, screen sharing does not.
I am guessing this a bug regarding how the integrated VNC software was implemented, and assume that this will be solved in short order.
If anyone else has a fix for this I would love to test it out!
Thanks for everyone's input, I still love Leopard!

  • Odd screeching sounds when using iChat Theater

Whenever I'm sending files over iChat theater there's a prolonged screeching sound much like the one you hear in the soundtrack of the film Psycho. One guess of mine was the volume of the speakers, but then, even when that's low, file sharing still emits those strange sounds. Any ideas what may cause them?
Mine is a PowerBook G4 running Leopard with a DSL connection. The other end uses a brand new Intel iMac.

On Laptops go to System Preferences > Sound > Input tab and adjust the Volume downwards.
If this does not work go to Hard Drive/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and reboot the Mac.
NOTE: This is the Library that shows up when you open the Hard Drive (NOT the one in your Home Folder OR the one inside System)

  • Can I toggle the video image on and off in iChat Theater with Keynote?

It seems to me that in the Leopard presentation in the Apple booth at MWSF when exhibiting iChat Theater with a Keynote presentation they were able to switch between two views. One was just a simple head-on view of the Keynote file. The other had the Keynote screen angled away slightly and there was a typical video chat display in the lower left of the screen. Now that I am trying to use iCT I only see the view with the angled screen with the video in lower left. I asked at the local Apple store but we were not able to find any information about this. Do I have faulty memory? Is this really a feature and if so how do I toggle the two views?
    Thanks.

Depending on the Specs of your Mac is the key to how iChat displays iChat Theatre.
I can find no setting for it.
Strangely when I tested my G4 split the view as did my MacBook Pro on receiving but when I tried to go from MacBook Pro to G4 I did not get split view

  • IChat Theater doesn't display properly

Everytime I try to play a quicktime movie on iChat Theater the display screen of the movie is cut. Sometime's the screen will be only showing half of the movie and other times it shows 3/4 of it. Any suggestions?? It just recently started doing this.

    Hi,
Some Movies you may have will be in "WideScreen" 16:9 ratio.
Others will be in the older 4:3 ratio
iChat's View is 4:3 in ratio
This causes issues with some Movies and Pages or Powerpoint presentations that are based on the Default Slide size. which also tends to be close to 16:9 in ratio.
Whether you get this Side by Side view depends on the Process and to a lesser extent the Internet speed you have.
Have you recently changed the format you make Movies in ?
If not check the Activity Monitor and see what Processor (CPU) cycles (in percentage terms) iChat, iChatAgent and vcencoder are using during iChat Theatre.

  • Anyone using Ichat Theater Preview from within AE 5.5*

I've got AE5.5, and I'm trying to use Ichat theater preview output.  No luck.  Works from within fcp7, all other output options work.  Have a blackmagic intensity pro card installed on my macpro.  Is this working for anyone?  Running Snow Leopard.
Sorry if this has been discussed before.  New to Adobe forums.  Did some searching here and googled without any luck.

Reset the LaunchServices database by copying and pasting this one-line command into a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/) and hitting the return key, restart, and reassociate the desired file types with Preview:

  • Messages in Mavericks:  How do we invoke "iChat Theater?"

Has the "iChat Theater" feature been removed from Messages?  I can't find it anywhere.  We used to be able to drag in files (video, pictures, documents) to view them "live" with our videoconferencing partner, like so:
And now it appears that all we can do is send the file?
Has this feature been removed?  Why?  If not, how do we invoke it, in Messages on Mavericks?  I use it all the time!

I suggest each user have their own Apple ID, iCloud account and purchase apps and music individually.
But if you must share the one account use the Settings app to stop syncing Contacts.
Settings > iCloud > Turn off Contacts.

  • Share a file with iChat Theater

I can share a jpeg picture by drag/drop the jpg icon on picture of person in my video conference and he receives it immediately. When I do this there are two window options superimposed on his picture, one to Send the File and the other iChat Theater. When I drag a short film clip, 13 mb, I only get the Send the File option. I tried using the iChat File menu "Share a File with iChat Theater" When I select the short film clip title the share button is active for a half second and then the Window indicates that the file can NOT be shared on iChat Theater. At one time I believe before 10.5.3 I could send film clips. I do receive film clips from others and view in iChat Theater.

    Hi,
This seems to have crept in at about 10.5.2
I certainly used to be able to do it on my G4 but not any longer.
I thought it was related to trying out PowerBoost and iGlasses but I have fully deleted those and deleted the .plists to make sure iChat is not looking for them.
    I have no work around.

  • IChat Theater only displays a still image

    Hi there,
I have a feeling this must be the simplest question in the world, but I can't figure it out.
While in an iChat session, I want to share an image via iChat Theater, so I drag a .jpg into the video window. When I do that, I have a choice on top to Send to my brother or to "Share With iChat Theater." I choose "Share With iChat Theater" but then instead of the interactive window that keeps my video feed, the .jpg takes over the whole iChat window on my end and there is no video feed. I can't find a setting to bring back the interactivity of iChat Theater. Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Greg

With faster Macs the screen does divide somewhat like a video chat with three people involved so that you see the person the Pic and yourself (or himself in this case)
On slower Macs your Video Feed is suspended in favour of the iChat Theatre Share and he will only see your Share and his preview.
The Side by Side view is supposed to be supported (top option) according to Apple's Specs http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2020?viewlocale=en_US See last paragraph.
Of course this also depends on the Internet Connection Speed and making sure it is not capped by System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming (Needs to be at 1.5Mbps) or iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit which should not really be less then 500kbps or by other macs and applications doing downloads.

  • IChat AV 4 - Leopard - Where is the side-by-side iChat theater?

It's shown in the Leopard preview (http://images.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat.html) under "Showing off without showing up".
But, how do you start this mode? I can share files, keynotes, iPhoto, etc. But, I can't find how to show the video feed side-by-side.
    Any ideas?

This appears to work only when both clients are running iChat AV 4. Trying to share a file with my girlfriend's MacBook running Tiger, it simply sent the shared file in place of my video stream.
Testing this on my Power Mac G5 and my MacBook Pro, both of which are on Leopard, starting sharing resulted in the nifty iChat Theater view shown in your link. And it is displayed in that side-by-side view on both parties' iChat sessions, not just the receiving end.
To start an iChat Theater session, you can either share a file or photo (or album, which runs as a slideshow) using the File menu, or drag a file onto your video session window and drop it on the "Share with iChat Theater" zone that appears.

  • Dysfunctional iChat theater

I am very disappointed with iChat theater.
    - It is unusable for Keynote sharing because the image quality is awfully bad, and slides are not readable
    - when sharing iPhoto or another document, the iSight video is not transmitted together with the iPhoto/Keynote etc. video.
This is not even conform to the presentation on Apple's website http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat.html
This has been tested between 2 brain new MacBook and MacBook Pro 17, with Leopard.
I am very disappointed. This worked fine several months ago in Leopard betas, as shown at the the WWDC presentation.
Has Apple considered that iChat quality was not critical for Leopard 10.5.0?
I can just hope so, and wait for a better iChat in 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 ...

For all users who share the iChat Theater image quality concerns here:
As shown in the image I posted above, iChat Theater image quality is certainly lower than looking at the actual document on your screen. Here are some thoughts for your consideration.
    (1) In addition to posting here in this user forum, you can use iChat Feedback to send your comments and suggestions directly to Apple. (For other issues, use Product Feedback for the product most closely related to your concerns.)
You will not likely get a response from Apple by using "Feedback", but at least you can be certain that Apple will see your comments for consideration in future products or updates.
    (2) Given its current image quality limitations, perhaps we do not yet correctly understand iChat Theater's intended use, at least in its present implementation.
Searching your Mac's iChat Help for "Hosting an iChat Theater presentation" clearly tells us that "iChat Theater lets you present slide shows in an iChat video window." We know that slide shows of pictures and large text files work, but small text fonts become illegible in the iChat Theater window.
While pondering this fact, it occurred to me that I can only read the large print in my local cinema movie theater. Small print is illegible there, too. For iChat Theater to truly be a "Theater", it's current implementation seems to me to make more sense as a slideshow presentation rather than as a document sharing function.
For sharing information-dense documents formatted with smaller fonts, the only iChat workarounds to I know iChat Theater's current image quality limitation are:
    (a) using iChat's Send File function to transfer a copy of the file itself, or
    (b) viewing (with editing capability) the document via Sharing your screen.
There are limitations and drawbacks to either alternative, but they do provide other ways to share documents that do not lend themselves to a "slideshow" presentation unless they are reformatted.
    (3) Understanding that normal iChat video quality is dependent upon available internet connection bandwidth and processor load, I tried a couple of tests:
    (i) To make sure that processor power limits are not adversely impacting iChat Theater image quality, I have tried iChat Theater with no other applications running and with several applications with high processor demands operating while I show and iChat Theater presentation.
(ii) I also tried making the iChat video window larger and smaller to see whether the smaller image and concomitant lower video processing demands would improve image quality.
(iii) I even tried doubling my internet service bandwidth (to 1 mbps up / 12 mbps down.)
None of these tests resulted in any noticeable iChat Theater image quality improvement on my dual-processor G5 Mac. Therefore, I know of no user-controllable way to improve iChat Theater performance at this time. I plan to use the workarounds above and wait to see whether the next update changes iChat Theater.

  • Ichat theater movie sharing

I'm having a problem with ichat when i go to ichat theater the movie I'm playing is cut off like the bottom so i can't see the complete screen can i adjust the screen?

    Hi,
I have just tested over Bonjour to OS 10.6.7 and iChat 5.0.3
The Lion picture changed to a Portrait shape distorting the pics and when playing movie from the Snow Leopard computer I had some green artifacts.
    It was only one test.
Otherwise the iChat Theatre worked in both directions without actually cutting anything off.
A Second test did keep the normal picture shape.
I do know that in some versions that Slides in Keynote and Power point that are not 4:3 in ratio can be cut off to the left and right.
Testing this does not seem to be effected as iChat seems to letterbox the "presentation"
As Adjustments used to be done in Keynote or PowerPoint I would think you may have to look to the Video/movie you are trying to watch.
