Ichat to AIM on vista question

I am not able to video chat or audio only chat with my friend, who uses Vista, via AIM. I found a website telling me how to set up the windows firewall on the pc, however it only says for windows xp. I tried it on my old dell laptop running xp and video and audio chat were both successful with macbook running leopard and imac running tiger.
My question is: Will this work for vista? Or just an xp fix?
BTW, the settings said to turn on UPnP and open the scope to any, not jsut subnet. I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
Some Forums have Users Tips above the Topic list and iChat has some.
This one http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438 is about iChat to AIM on a PC and video chats.
Quick things to try and check.
Have she allowed AIM as an Exception in the Windows Firewall ?
In your ichat Go to the Preferences item in the iChat Menu.
Chose Video/Audio section and change the Bandwidth to 500kbps
If you are using Leopard (10.4.x) and iChat 4.x.x then go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the speed to 1.5Mbps (Don't worry that it hints about it being for Cable)
Double check System Preferences > Sound > Output tab.
If you actually have two methods of output make sure the chosen one here is the same as in iChat > Preferences > Video and the extra Output Drop down you will get below your Pic/Camera Preview
ON the PC end the Mic is set up in the Control Panels and the AIM app uses that Level for Audio and Video chats.
She may need to make sure this is high enough. (I am not sure this is adjustable during chats like the System Preferences > Sound > Input on the Mac is for iChat).

  • How do I change ichat from AIM to MSN on my macbook

I'm trying to figure out how to switch my ichat from AIM to MSN.

    Hi,
Natively you can use names vaild with AIM (AIM, @Mac.com a MobileMe) and Jabber IDs including Googletalk ones in iChat.
There is a way to get to Text chat to MSN Buddies via a Jabber ID and what are called Transports.
    The Instructions are here

  • IChat to AIM XP - my experiences so far

My experiences with iChat to AIM 5.9 on a PC running XP
I have a G4 Cube (10.4.2) in Germany and my Mum and Dad are in New Zealand running a PC with XP. We both took our firewalls completely down (have not tried just opening the selected ports yet). We get a connection with sight and sound when he initiates the call, but if I try to initiate then I get the " I failed to respond signal" message.
I felt the video and sound was better than iVisit, which we also tried. But after a few minutes of video chatting, the audio I was hearing deteriorated and then eventually the image froze. My Dad at 70 is no computer genius (he should get a Mac really), but I will pass on the "AIM tuning tips" posted elsewhere in the forum to him to see if we can improve the connection.

    HI Peeks,
I suggested to Crista that she should look at the XP Service Pack 2 Firewall settings as I have found it works better if the Firewall is not wide open but pinned down to the AIM exceptions.
This will not be in her relatives modem.
In fact if it is a USB modem they would be advised to Enable the UPnP excetion as well as this is controlled by the computer.
On a Mac the router can treat the new OS as if it was connected to a whole new computer. This can mean checking router settings (some D-Links and Netgears seem to like a reboot), making sure any Port Forwarding settings are still pointing at the IP the computer has.
With this change of the OS some people bump into the SIP aware modem problem.
This is a somewhat transient thing to pin down.
    The symptoms can be:
    Two small groups of Buddies
    a) contact all the time
    b) contact some of the time.
This goes hand in hand with a larger group of buddies that can not be connected to. (this is Audio Or Video chats)
Now moving up to Tiger changes things for some people so that they appear to have a large group of No contacts (many because their Buddies lists are not large enough to check the problem)
Check the manufacturers web site or any manual that you have about this.
Further info can be had here Safari users will have to scroll down to the paragraph on SIP and the texts in Boxes below that.
As you are unfortunately aware this can be an extremely frustrating learning curve.
To be at our most helpful it would be useful to know the modem you are using,
The Manner in which you have opened the ports for ichat in it.
    Any secondary router you have.
The port opening style there as well.
Any Connection Doctor error messages or the text over the failed chat if nothing else shows up.
Booting in to Panther for testing (if you have it on a spare disk or partition) is useful as the Connection Doctor there tells you more, even if it is a bit cryptic.
AIM updates come faster than iChat ones and any automatic acceptence may be part of the problem. The current version is at AIM 5.9.3861

  • How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac

How do i transfer or export buddy list names on iChat or Aim on mac?

    Hi,
If you have the AIM for Mac then you cand sign in as one Screen Name and use the Export feature to create a file of the Screen Names of that Buddy list.
(you can then sign in under a different name and import the names)
In iChat it helps if all the Buddies have Real Names or Nicknames so that they have entries in the Address Book.
You can then create Groups in the Address Book and move all the Cards into one Group.
All the names in that Group can then be selected and dragged to another AIM valid Buddy list.
I once transferred 292 names this way.
You can also login to multiple Accounts in some version of ichat and just Drag names form one list to another.
You may find with any of these methods that some Buddies appear only as Off line.
This will due to their Security Setting where they are only allowing your Original Screen Name.

  • Multi-person video conference iChat to AIM 5.9 on PC

Is there a way to have multi person video conference involving a buddy that's using AIM 5.9 on a PC?
If I'm on a video chat with another iChat buddy and try to invite a AIM-on-PC buddy, it simply doesn't work. If I'm on a video chat with the AIM-on-PC buddy, the plus sign is grayed out. I can otherwise easily support a four-way video conference, so long it involves only iChats...

You cannot do multiperson video conferencing involving both iChat and AIM PC users. I think that is what the first responder meant to say.
You can use SightSpeed to do multiperson video conferencing among both Mac and PC users. There are both PC and Mac versions of SightSpeed, and it is necessary that all users be running SightSpeed software and not iChat or AIM for PCs.
Also, the person hosting the SightSpeed multiperson conference must have the $4.95 per month paid version of SightSpeed. If you are interested, you can find more information at:

  • Ichat to aim no audio

o.k. i know that there are all kinds of problems with ichat to aim connections. i finally got a working video connection to my friend who uses aim. he can even hear me. the problem is that i cannot hear him! anybody ever had this problem? it seems new to me...
    - christian

    Hello - christian.
    anybody ever had this problem?
    Many times.
Whenever there is no audio at your end, but the PC user on the other end has a mic and can hear you, the PC user should try "tuning" the preferences for his camera and / or Mic. That usually resolves the problem.
Some PC users report that they need to reboot their PC after tuning to make the changes effective. Some also have reported that they must re-"Tune" whenever they make ANY camera or mic change, even as simple as unplugging and later plugging the same item back into their PC.

  • Issues with both iChat and AIM

Recently I have been having issues with both iChat and AIM. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on what the problem may be.
AIM allows me to log-in and chat with people. However, if I close an IM window or Buddy Info window, the AIM program will quit and the "Unexpectedly Quit" notice will pop up.
In regards to iChat, I did a clean install of iChat using the Tiger install disk. However, when I launch iChat and go through the initial setup it freezes up and I get the spinning rainbow and have no choice but to do a force quit.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

    Hi
Seeing you re-installed iChat you will need to run the 10.4.10combo http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410comboupdat eppc.html to bring iChat back upto date.

  • IChat can't connect with AIM on Vista

I'm trying to conduct a video chat. I'm using iChat 3.1.9 (v446) and my sister is using AIM 5.8 on her brand new Dell laptop running Vista. We both have Linksys Routers which have all the recommended ports opened PLUS we both tried turning our firewalls completely off.
When she invites me, it tries to connect but ends up saying that I "did not respond". When I invite her, it sits in a perpetual state of "waiting for XX to connect". All sessions end with "error 8".
Help! It can't be this hard??

AS it is Vista I presume that is AIM 6.8

  • IChat to AOL/AIM image quality question.

This is a question about the image quality during a video chat from AOL/AIM and Trillian Pro on PCs to iChat on Macs. The details of the computers, connections and cameras are:
I'm running 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro (2.33GHz CPU, 2GB RAM) with iChat AV 3 with a DSL connection that averages 1.24 Mbps DL and 271 Kbps UL and an external iSight camera.
My mother is running 10.3.9 on an iBook (1.33 GHz CPU, 256 MB RAM) with iChat AV 2.1 with a DSL connection that averages 155 Kbps DL and 146 Kpbs UL and an external iSight camera.
My sister is running Windows (not sure which version) on a Dell Dimension DIM4600 (2.60GHz CPU, 512MB RAM) with Trillian Pro with a DSL connection that averages 1.29 Mbps DL and 446 Kbps UL and a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 with QuickCam 8.3.0.
When I video chat with my mother my picture to her is good and her picture to me is good.
When I video chat with my sister my picture to her is good, but her picture to me is bad. The slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
When my mother video chats with my sister, my mother's picture to my sister is good, but my sister's picture to my mother is bad. Again, the slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
Also I have a friend (some kind of PC, some kind of Logitech webcam) using AOL/AIM 5.9 (I think) with cable modem connection (I don't know the speed). When I video chat with him my picture to him is good, but his picture to me is bad. Again, the slightest movement causes the image to go break up into large squares that settles back down a decent image when the movement ends.
    Does anyone know if:
    (1) this kind of behavior "par for the course" with PCs over the AOL/AIM network?
    or if
    (2) there is some "switch" in Trillian Pro and AOL/AIM 5.9 that needs to be thrown to improve the image (like the Bandwidth switch in iChat preferences)?
    or
    (3) is the camera or camera connection (USB vs. Firewire) that causes the problem?
    Thanks.
P.S. I know the speed of my mother's DSL connection seems slow, but because our video chat images both ways are good I don't think that's the problem here.

    Hi James,
I can relate to this somewhat based on AIM 5.9 to Macs.
You may be able to use the information to sort Trillian out further.
Ok first start a chat and then open the Connection Doctor from the Video menu at your end.
The Bit rate should be well over 100 for both of you.
Her Frame rate should be at least 10fps.
Now when on AIM 5.9 the framerate drops to about 1fps to the ichat end it is usually because the Pic Quality is set too high on the PC end. It then spends so long producing one frame it slows down sending the video.
To change this on the AIM app a user has to do the following.
They click on the preview tab (there are two; one for your incoming and one for their preview).
With the preview as the front tab a small icon appears to the right of the pic.
Clicking on this brings up a slider.
Sliding the slider to the left reduces the quality.
Visually you may not detect this but the effect is sort of converse in that the frames are produced faster as less detail is in them and the video frame rate goes up and therefore looks smoother.
I have not heard of Trillian needing this and consequently would not know where specifically to direct you.
I would start with the Preferences/Properties of Trillian and see if there are any setting there for output.
Look at size of the pic at their end as well as frame rates that they are aiming at.
As you say the slower 150ish connection is considered slow in many places now-a-days but is enough for 1-1 chats (min 100kbps).
The problem is likely to be a setting on the PC end.
I would also check the Trillian site for info about adjusting the frame rate or video quality. They have an extensive FAQ database.

  • General iChat video AIM Question.

Has anyone figured out what port settings your AIM has to be on in order to use the video chat feature? I am currently using port 1080 and my parents can see me, but I cant see them and I tried using these same ports with another friend and it wont work at all. Any help.

    Hi,
Apple has 2 Articles on this now.
This came out for iChat 2 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507?viewlocale=en_US and was updated for iChat 3 and the Jabber parts (you need the info on Jabber and Bonjour form here)
Apple added this Article for Leopard (but did not include the Bonjour and Jabber Info)
    The A/V ports are 5060 (if Tiger/iChat 3), 5678, 16384-16403 if Tiger/iChat 3 or just 16393-16402 if Leopard/iChat 4
(it does not really matter if you set the iChat 3 ports as the Leopard ones are inside that range).

  • Can't initiate a video conference from Mac to PC wtih iChat and AIM

I am using iChat on an iMac intel core duo and trying to video chat with my dad on a PC laptop using AIM 5.9. We can both invite the other to video chat, however when either one click to accept various things keep us from initiating the chat. One message we get says a firewall may be the problem. My firewall is turned off. He is running Norton. But we tried with that firewall turned off as well as the windows firewall tirned off. At the moment we are on the same network connected via a 2wire router (Myself wirelessly and he via ehternet). I have tried various settings with the router firewall including setting the PC to DMZ and the Mac to the settings specified on portforwarding.com.
When I initiate the conversation from the Mac he gets a brief flicker like the video window is opening and then it closes; meanwhile my computer says waiting for response until it gives up. When he initiates the video chat and I accept I get the message that the chat failed because I did not respond even thougth I clicked accept. He gets a mesage that the chat failed and the reason may be a firewall.
Any ideas on how to get this to work so that we are able to video chat. Also he will be returning home in a few days and using a linksys router.
Any help or ideas to try would be great

    Dear Ralph,
Sorry for the confusion, I did assume you were an Apple empoyee. Your knowledge about iChat is stunning. I appreciate your effort to help users by sharing your knowledge with such dedication. I do apologise.
    Regarding:
Port forwarding is being automated and static ip addresses will be generated automatically.
Let's call it redirection (the handshake indicates the port to forward to).
When you have NAT running in your home you have the entire Internet available to all your machines. What if you have a machine behind the NAT gateway that needs to be accessed from outside? This is where redirection comes in. Redirection allows incoming traffic to be sent to a machine behind the NAT gateway.
    An example:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 80 -> 192.168.1.20
This line redirects TCP port 80 (web server) traffic to a machine inside the network at 192.168.1.20. So, even though 192.168.1.20 is behind your gateway and inside your network, the outside world can access it.
The from any to any part of the above rdr line can be quite useful. If you know what addresses or subnets are supposed to have access to the web server at port 80, you can restrict them here:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.0/24 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
This will redirect only the specified subnet. Note this implies you can redirect different incoming hosts to different machines behind the gateway. This can be quite useful. For example, you could have users at remote sites access their own desktop computers using the same port and IP address on the gateway as long as you know the IP address they will be connecting from:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.14 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 16.114.4.89 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.22
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 24.2.74.178 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.23
A range of ports can also be redirected within the same rule:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 6000
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 7000:*
These examples show ports 5000 to 5500 inclusive being redirected to 192.168.1.20. In rule #1, port 5000 is redirected to 5000, 5001 to 5001, etc. In rule #2, the entire port range is redirected to port 6000. And in rule #3, port 5000 is redirected to 7000, 5001 to 7001, etc.
Static ip addresses are necissary to ensure that the router does not hand out the same ip twice, hence my question about the data transferred when a user connects his new mac to the one wich was set previously by the user (or other user). I think this information is explained in the Network Traffic Analysis you direct iChat to when they are asked to port forward (manually). I do not know the url by heart but it should be a known link to you.
    Regarding auto response:
Sometimes you have to consider whether a very direct (and unelegant) interveniance in the software outweights the malfunction of an application that is causing a lot of trouble and inconvinience to Mac users. Personally I think that in this case the risk of being disturbed (still the same as anyone who askes for attention using chat or even phone) outweighs the much more irritating and incomprehensible "user did not respond" message and thus not being able to use one of the main features promised and promoted by Apple.
    Yes life is inconsistent,
at least life is not sold to you.
    Regards,
    JPM

  • IChat and AIM

How can I make AIM for Windows do a video chat with iChat? It must work with Leopard and later versions of OS X and Windows Vista/7. Ideally XP as well.
I downloaded the latest version of AIM on a PC and tried to do a video chat with an iChat account, and was told that the other party needed to upgrade to the latest AIM for this to work. I was offered to invite them to download it. Text chatting worked fine.
I read about having to turn off the real time protocol or something like that, but I found nothing like that in the settings or UI which is very bare bones.

It is a bit strange, but it seems to be working in theory. I am in Norway, and I was able to connect from AIM to iChat in Thailand and the USA. But I was not able to connect between to machines on the local network! That is what I tested before as well. Sometimes iChat would give me an error log, one of which is included below, sometimes AIM would say "Unknown error" and sometimes both programmes would be stuck waiting for a connection even though I accepted on the receiving end.

  • Click wheel ipod and vista question

Hello, I have a 4G click wheel 40 gig ipod (updater version 3.1.1) and I have been using my mothers computer which has windows xp and i haven't upgraded itunes to the version 8. I was given a new computer (32 bit) which is running windows vista basic. My question is am I going to have problems with using vista basic and my older ipod? I have heard that it was turning older ipods into bricks and have been scared to transfer everything over to the new computer.
Also, I am using it with an Alpine KCA-420i (got it the same time as the ipod) in the truck, and it worked great for a while and for the past two years it freezes up, skips songs or just won't work and was wandering if it was due to upgrading itunes? The last time the ipod was updated was for the version it is running now.
I am trying to be careful with my ipod since it got frozen during an ice storm (no electricity for nine days) and left in the truck in bellow freezing temps for a couple of hours. The hard drive didn't appreciate it and is now not really working all that great. clicking, whirling ,grinding noises ya give it a couple good whacks on the back or sides it starts to work again. I read some post on reformatting the disk, last time i tried it the ipod froze but now i am going to try again. I did the diagnostic mode solution and it keeps getting frozen in the HDD scan.
Sorry this is long, but if anybody has any suggestions or answers that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Cinamon

I don't have a guide or anything, but it is almost as easy as replacing it with another hard drive, and there are online guides for doing that, for example
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/iPod4th_Generation_orPhoto
Be sure to use those plastic tools. If you use metal ones, you will damage the iPod's case.
And it's a Compact Flash card that I used, not an SD card (which is smaller). Compact Flash cards 16GB and below are getting affordable (if you shop around online), although 32GB and higher ones are still expensive. 4GB cards are very cheap, so you may want to try it with one of those, to confirm it works, since it is always possible there are other problems with your iPod.
    1. Get one of these adapters, or equivalent. It's $5 with shipping included.
    [CF Compact-Flash SSD To Toshiba IPod 1.8 inch Adapter|http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-Compact-Flash-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapt erW0QQitemZ180303249125QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Cables_Adapters?hash=item29fae93ee5& _trksid=p3911.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1240%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A2% 7C294%3A50]
The listing above on eBay is the same item from the same seller as the one I bought.
    2. It fits in the iPod case with only one minor mod. There is a pair of jumper pins, used for the master/slave setting; you can see it on the image in the listing (on the left side). You want it with the jumper ON, for the master setting. It sticks out too much, so I just bent the pins 90 degrees with needle nose pliers, and the jumper still fits. If your 4G iPod is the 40GB model, it has the thicker drive and case, so it may fit fine without bending it over.
    3. Connect the Compact Flash card to the adapter and connect the adapter where the 1.8-inch hard drive was connected. You need to put something non-conducting between the logic board and the adapter/CF card. A stiff piece of paper (like a business card) would work; I cut a piece of clear plastic from the +impossible to open without hurting yourself+ packaging material that most tech products come packed in these days. Cut it to the right rectangle shape to fit between the logic board and adapter/CF card without sliding around.
    4. The adapter plus CF Card is much smaller than the hard drive, so you need to fill that space to avoid it rattling around. Cardboard pieces would work, but if you want to take advantage of the lighter weight, get something light. I used some of that flexible foamy packing sheets that are used to wrap around delicate items for shipping. I cut appropriate size pieces to take up the extra space. I put one layer between the adapter/CF card and the logic board and the rest between the adapter/CF card and the metal half of the case.
Then, you just connect the iPod and run a Restore, as if it was a regular 4G iPod. The three key advantages are better shock resistance, lighter weight, and no drive spin-up delay. The only real disadvantage is lower capacity, unless you get a more expensive CF card with higher capacity.
Note to other readers: I also tried this retrofit with an older 3rd gen iPod. It did not work for me and the parts I used; I could not get the iPod to format or restore with the Compact Flash card inside.

  • Video iChat for AIM not working

I know this is a common question, but I've tried all the suggestions and it's still not working. I've already:
    -turned off Internet sharing
    -changed the port to 443
-changed my QuickTime streaming to 1.5 Mbps
I also know it's a problem with my connection because my friend who I was trying to chat with is not having any trouble video chatting with others.
I'm not sure what else I can try. I've included the error details, if it'll help. Thanks!

Could you for the benefit of others describe where this firewall was and what you did to change it's settings ?
Was this the spot for the Un-blocking of Internet PINGS or was it a more general sort of Firewall ?
OR was it a Firewall with High, Medium, Low and Off settings that specified different levels of Internet access ?
