IChat to iChat random video disconnect.

Hi, I'm currently having to ichat with my girlfriend in the USA from here in London. And all of a sudden we're getting disconnected when we video chat every 20 minutes or so. We can connect to each other again immediately after, but the same thing keeps happening over and over again.
I run an iMac with Leopard, she runs a Macbook with Leopard.
We both have the same Router (Netgear WGR614V9 Wireless Router)
Both of our settings under iChat are as follows:
Port: 443
Server: slogin.oscar.aol.com
I'd really appreciate any help. iChat is like a staple in our keeping in touch right now.

Are there any other symptoms before you lose contact ?
Any issues getting Mail or web browsing looking slow to get apge now and then ?

IChat/AIM keeps disconnecting...

Hey,
I have a problem with iChat and AIM. Both keep randomly logging me off. When they do, they say that there have been network problems when the connection has been totally fine. I can whiz through the net with Safari but iChat and AIM keep shutting down by themselves. I looked through preferences to see if there was some type of timer or something that would automatically log me off but I can't find anything that would do it.
Can anyone help? I'd like to stay on AIM and iChat even when I'm idle. Sometimes it logs me off in the middle of a conversation and it just gets really annoying.

With an external camera it is possible to set iChat in iChat > Preferences > Video section to automatically launch if the camera is On/attached
In the iChat > Preferences > Accounts it is possible to set an account name to Login automatically when iChat opens.
If the Internet is dropped these two setting normally make it reconnect when the connection comes back.
It was better in iChat 2 though.
Internal cameras seem not to give the cue to iChat to reconnect as most of the time there are off.

Error Message when using iChat w/ Video

I am receiving an error anytime that I use iChat video. It only occurs in certain circumstances though. They are anytime I have been in a video conference with someone for about 20/30 minutes, I am told that audio still comes through but the camera feed freezes. Then when that happens, I close down the video screen/window and attempt to re-connect. When attempting to reconnect, it tells me that it is asking for the other party to join in, tells me that it is connecting then I get an error message popping up.
I'm going to go ahead and throw this in here. I am using a 2Wire Router, my internet provider is ATT U-verse (I know feel for me).
Now, in order to get video to run again, both parties have to reboot their computers. Otherwise we will both continue to get an error. What in the bloody heck is going on? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!

Is System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps ?
Restart iChat if you have to change (the Automatic setting can cap iChat in Tiger and to a lesser extent Leopard)
In iChat > Preferences > Video Section set the Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
I say this as the symptom you describe may be your ISP trying to control Peer-to-Peer File sharing and as iChat is Peer-to-Peer in Video and Audio Only chats it seems it is subject to those ISPs playing with Bandwidth to control this.
It may pay to have the Connection Doctor (In the iChat > Video Menu) open to monitor if your Connection speed or your Buddies is the one that is dropping off.
You can change the Bandwidth setting in iChat during a chat and it does not need a restart.
Which 2Wire device ?
What can you tell us about how it is set up for iChat ?
Does it have and is it using UPnP ?
Does it have DoS or SPI protection as this may also get in the way ?

IChat's Video Chat & IMs Supported

What IMs are supported by iChat's video chat function?
I'm asking this because, I have tried GTalk on iChat, and the video chat button is greyed out.

Hi,
iChat uses the same Video Codecs no matter which Buddy list you start from.
Therefore it can Video - iChat to iChat from an AIM/Apple ID Buddy list that logs into AIM or viw and Jabber Buddy List (including Googletalk) to any Jabber Buddy that is running iChat.
Of course the Bonjour Buddy list invokes the protocols to Video to other MAcs on you LAN that also have iChat open.
The GoogleTalk App for PC and the GoogleTalk Plugin for Intel macs can not do Video with iChat.
Not can iChat Video chat to a User logged in to the GoogleTalk web based list in Google mail's page.
Jabber as a whole are working on thier Own Video solution.
GoogleTalk have gone their own way despite being a Jabber server.

No video in ichat, but video in other apps

Hi,
I have a firewire DV camera that I use as a webcam. It has always worked with iChat in the past. Recently, it hasnt been working with ichat. It is detected by iChat, meaning that it shows that I have a video chat icon next to my name. However, when I click on the video preview, all I see is a black screen with no sound. Video shows up fine in other apps though. For example, If I use quicktime and make a new video recording, I get crystal clear video from my camera. Any ideas? Thanks.

i am using the front one. Again, the computer knows the camera is plugged in. In quicktime it displays video perfectly. However in other apps, such as final cut pro and ichat no video shows up. I am thoroughly confused.

I'd like to learn about iChat.

Have you tried subsequent visits ?
I tried Safari after it loaded the second time (I was getting the URL) and it loaded straight away.

BUG: Playback Fails When Loading A Random Video - Firmware 1.2

I've been looking all over on where to post a bug, and for a fix for this bug I found. Not many seem to be having this problem (I assume not many are trying to randomly play a video from a video playlist)
BUG: Playback Fails When Loading A Random Video
iPod FIRMWARE: 1.2
PROBLEM (1): When pressing "Play" on a video playlist or on 'Music Videos' while the iPod is set to Random->Song, the iPod displays a white playback screen, displays song 0 of 0, empty duration bar and a duration time of 0:00/-0:00.
PROBLEM (2): After successful playing a seleted video within a video playlist or music video list, the iPod attempts to play a randomly choosen video (HDD clicks abnormally) but times-out and returns the user to the Playlist selection screen.
iPod MODEL: 60GB Video - Black [Bought in NOV 05]
If anyone knows how to report a bug, or anyone else having this problem (Try it on you iPod, post your results!) let me know!

Random video plays as background to title instead of still

I added a still as background to scrolling credit title (iMovie11). When I play the movie, it's all good. When I hover over the still or export the project, what plays in the background is NOT the still but some random video clip. I deleted the whole clip (title, soundtrack, still) and problem is still there. How do I clear? This has not happened with other stills/scrolling titles I've used in the project. Thanks to any and all who can help.

Random Video Noise in Compression

I have a 90 minute timeline that I am exporting to Compressor - using DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes 16X9 - each time I do it I get random video noise - pixalated blue boxes - bands across the bottom of the screen etc. Each time I compress the noise is in a different place. With Compressor 1 I did not have this problem. I have a number of Chapter Markers that I am exporting and quality is a concern so I need the Dolby 2.0 compression on the audio - so using the Quick Time Conversion is less desirable - I have followed the directions for getting rid of Compressor 1 presets but they don't seem to go away - also tried to reinstall compressor but on a custom install it is grayed out. Any suggestions? I am desperate!

First a speed issue (Compressor 2.0.0, solved in 2.0.2) then there are gamma issues (still broken), now I too am having video noise in the form of strange bands / chunks and lines in the video. I've checked my master, the digitized source in FCP and it definitely is in the output from Compressor. My source material is uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 footage from both Beta SP and Umatic. I export to a Quicktime reference video (because a direct export fails to incorporate proper gamma settings, the image being too dark) and then import into Compressor.
My System (all software, drivers, and firmware up-to-date):

FCP 5.0.2
OS X 10.4.2
Aja IO Driver 2.0 / Firmware 23 (28)

I'm happy to provide Apple with any footage for troubleshooting purposes.
BTW, I recommend rolling back to (or staying with) system 10.3.9 with FCP 4.5 and Compressor 1.0 for anyone considering the jump who need MPEG2 compression out of Compressor. That system runs fine.

Play video clips in random order. That's it. That is all it has to do.
iTunes will allow you to play a list of videos but only in order from top to bottom. If you try shuffle it freezes. I've talked to Apple techs about this too and other third party vendors like Boinx. Random video playbacks are not featured in any program out there for all I know.
It would be nice too if the program could equalize the sound level too from video to video - that's all it would have to do.
Is there a reason why this is so hard to do? I have a mac mini attached to a Apple Cinema and I like to show video clips from Vimeo and other places but not always in the same stale order from top to bottom. Yes I can drag and re-order the playlist, but sure would be nice to have it all done randomly and to keep a constant volume level from video to video.

I think a random video playback feature would be neat in iTunes or Front Row or am I the only guy that digs this? I could be since third party developers are not harkening to this calling.

I've never had any issue using the shuffle feature in iTunes to play videos in random order. You might try creating another user account to see if it is a permission issue. If it's not, you might want to reload the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

Random Video track selection

I have an idea to create a DVD that works like the interactive board game/DVD "Scene-It"
Basically what I am wondering is, whether there is a way to select a random video track when you click on a menu button.
For example let's say that I have 5 video tracks, when someone clicks on a button I would like one of those 5 tracks to appear randomly. This way, each time someone clicks, a different video track will be played.
I'm not sure whether this is possible using DVDSP, but wanted to ask the people would know more about it than me.

[solved-ish] random usb disconnect

Hi
There's a first time for everything and today that seems to be a random USB disconnect.
So my USB dongle was disconnected and wouldn't reconnect when replugged.
Does this error message mean anything or should I be looking elsewhere to try and find the cause of the failure? Google hasn't turned up much of use and didn't see much on the forums here either.

Hi, a lot of people too (myself included). After upgrade, any usb unit goes away (some external devices like mouses excepted), usb pendrives dissapear (and become corrupted for any other computer), battery goes down quicklier and performance is affected. It seems 10.9.2 doesn't manage correctly hardware physical connections by asking them continuously. This is my young macbookair performance since I unfortunately upgraded to 10.9.2 four days ago. A lot of people is calling in all forums for questions (iphones, Cameras, external drives, monitors...) that are all related with this missfunction with physical connections.
