IChat to ICQ

Once upon a time I had no trouble chatting with ICQ users via iChat, aside from the fact that when this first became possible they saw all the xml formatting (long ago fixed). Now I can see my ICQ "buddies" status, but I can't get messages to them anymore. They no longer see me at all in their lists. Doesn't matter which machine I try it from (I have multiple Macs). Seems like it started happening at least a few months ago.
All of the affected machines are running the following:
OS X version 10.3.9
iChat AV 2.1 (v153)
I log into iChat with a .mac account.

Finally got this resolved, turned out to be partly an ICQ issue (and partly a little human error). My friend had his ICQ setting to only allow messages from his contact list, and for some reason he had accidently deleted me. ICQ has a character limit on adding AOL/.mac usernames, and mine was 1 character too long. He temperorarily downgraded to allow all, I sent him a message, and he added me that way. Now it works again.

  • How to send instant messages from my mac

I would like to know if it's possible to send instant messages to a cell phone from my mac..

Depends on the standards supported by your cell phone. Skype does exist for PowerPC.
iChat supports ICQ and AOL instant messaging as well Jabber based chat standards. If you can get one of these, you can go through iChat.
And finally for Twitter, some options on this article:

  • Has my mail been read?????

How can you tell if an email you have sent was opened and read?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Technically there is no way a computer could tell if an eMail you sent has been actually read by the intended receiver. You'd have to ask in person and have the recipient repeat the contents to you in person to be sure.
Most mailservers completely ignore mail receipt requests. Even if they don't they only tell you that the mailserver has received the email, not that the recipient has retrieved it as well.
Most mailclient applications ignore mail receipts as well and those that don't leave it up to the user if they actually want to send a receipt back. Default usually is not to send it.
But even if you do get a receipt back, what does it tell you? Nothing of value. Somebody has clicked on that mail and had it displayed for long enough on screen to trigger the receipt. 1 second is enough for that, but nobody actually will have read your message.
To make things weird at last, you can't tell if the've only looked at the attached pictures, and ahven't read your message or if they have even understood a single word of it. It might have been somebody else having access to that computer who didn't even bother to look.
    Conclusion:
Any technical receipt will have an information value just below zero if your recipient really read and understood your message. Forget about receipts, use instant messaging (Jabber/iChat/AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/Skype/MSN etc.) if you want to be sure or talk back to the recipient about the matter.

  • IChat, ICQ and non-unicode ICQ clients (cyrillic=latin accented letters)

I would like to use iChat to connect to my ICQ account
If somebody with an older ICQ client sends me cyrillic I get garbage (latin accented letters).
If they're using newer ICQ clients I'm getting the message in correct cyrillic.
This imho has something to do with using non-unicode encoding for the messages.
In other ICQ clients (e.g. Adium) I've used there was a setting specifying the encoding to use when there's no explicit encoding. Setting this to windows-1251 was solving the problem for me.
But I see no similar setting for iChat.
Can this be handled somehow ? Is there some preference somewhere ?

    Tom Gewecke wrote:

PS There is one thing you could try, namely setting the font used by iChat to one encoded as Win-1251. You can get some here, for example:
    http://web.ku.edu/~herron/fonts/download_fonts.html
Whether having these on your system will mess up anything else I don't know.
This didn't worked unfortunately. I'm still getting the text as accented latin letters. Apparently the network layer of iChat is translating them to unicode somehow.
And no : having these fonts installed haven't affected anything else on my system from what I can tell.

  • My buddy can't decode my iChat messages, which i send over ICQ/AIM

    Hi,
im using my ICQ-account over the iChat app on my MAC. And when i'm trying to send messages, my chat buddy only recieves kryptic messages!
What can i do to make this work ?

    Hi,
At present you cannot do this in iChat 6
In earlier version there was an Add-on called Chax that could strip the HTML coding to produce the Ball0on and the colours when sending to an ICQ buddy.
The last version is not compatible with ichat 6 (they moved stuff)
There are rumours about a new version but the site does not list it yet.
You may find that changing the style (iChat View Menu > Messages when a text chat window is open) to Compact or Text may make it more readable to your ICQ buddy.

  • IChat inserts HTML for ICQ users

When I chat with other ICQ users, iChat inserts HTML into my dialogue containing formatting for the text. This only happens when the other person doesn't have iChat but a different chat client.
Is there an option to turn this kind of unhelpful text styling off for my outgoing messages?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Simon,
As far as I can tell iChat sends the HTML stuff to produce the Bubble inforamtion at the other end.
Obviously AIM ignores it and ICQ does not.
I am not sure if switching to Text only actually completely solves it completely but it is an option.
    There is no halfway setting.
    Thanks for the points.

  • Running Mavericks, I was trying to get messages to run ICQ and apparently I changed a setting that now causes me to get an error message and shuts messages down.

    I am running Mavericks.
I was trying to get "Messages" to play nice with ICQ. it was sending HTML format to the receiver on the other end.
I saw online how to change the item typed to show up as plain text on the for the recipient.
Unwisely, I didn't follow ALL the instructions (where it told me to make a copy on my desktop "in case" and I changed one of the settings incorrectly.
Now when I try to start Messages up, it opens briefly, then says it encountered an error and needs to shut down.
I can remove Messages, but before I do, I can't seem to find a place to re-download it.
Any suggestions on the best way of handling this?

    Hi,
Once you get to Lion (OS X 10.7) and higher the only way is to Restore the whole OS as several Apple App are included this way and are not available separately.
It should be just the .plists that are involved.
The com.apple.imagent.plist holds the account info as it provides a "listening" function on all logins before your start up the app.
I would delete this one as well.
If that does not work repeat the process and delete com.apple.ichat.plist itself.

  • How to send messages in iChat in plain text? (no html)

How to send messages in iChat in plain text? I don't need any formatting nor hiding links in achor tags.

    HI,
In the View Menu once you have a Chat window open is the Messages item which allows you to change the style of the IM.
However this still sends a HTML like packet for dispalyiing the info at the other end.
This does not work to ICQ users.
Chax, an iChat Add-on, works in iChat 5 and lower (although there are then different versions) and can strip out the HTML part for sending to ICQ users.
However there is not yet a Lion/iChat 6 version.

If those things are the same do this:-
In the Finder use the Go Menu > go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences in the dialogue box.
Then find the com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and drag it to the Trash.

  • IChat and msn

Is apple ever going to come out with a version of iChat(and mail) that is compatible with hotmail and msn messenger?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I am not a product manager in Apple nor in MS, so I can't tell them which protocols to implement nevertheless they wont listen to me (alone). Honestly I don't even mind whether they should implement it in iChat or in another software, but the fact are that:
    1) Most web camera's (90% or 99%) are not supporting Mac.
    2) Skype has video support for windows but not for Mac.
    3) MSN on Mac has no video support.
    4) And even Apple, don't take care of us by giving us something that does work cross platform.
So at the end of the day whether this is XMPP/Jabber or any other protocol, Mac users are getting nothing useful to use for proper video chats.
BTW according to latest market researches MSN is leading with over 60% worldwide market share, 70-90% in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and neck to neck with AOL in the US.
Hey guess what..(?) 99.9999% of the users around
    the
    world use Windows.
    It's probably closer to 90% (~3% Mac, ~5% Linux,
    leaving about 2% other).
Why not give the 0.00001% of us
loyal to Mac a proper way to connect to our
    families
and friends, who use MSN for video chats???
I suspect it's because Apple is a US company. In the
US AIM rules, in Europe it's MSN. In Asia i've heard
that ICQ is still popular (but ICQ and AIM use the
    same protocol now anyway).
Frankly i don't want Apple to add MSN capabilities to
iChat, and i'd rather they depreciate the AIM
capabilities in favour of more work on XMPP/Jabber.
If you want interconnectivity i suggest you email
Microsoft (,AOL and Yahoo) and ask them why they
aren't supporting the IETF standard for IM, which is
    XMPP.

  • Adding ichat account names

ever since updating to latest snow leopard, ive had an issue in ichat when adding a name. used to be when i hit the "+" button on ichat, a window would appear where i can enter someone's name. if i had them in my address book and an IM account name was also in my address book, their account name would show in the "account name" box. now it displays a phone number and i have to open address book and cut and paste it in. any others share this problem?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I am busy sorting out my Time Machine Backup drive at the moment for my OS 10.6.4 computer.
My Address Book does not have Address/Contact cards for people who I only have Screen Names for.
I can Add a entry by adding a character to the iChat Info Card > Address Card tab
(I list [email protected] as just a Screen Name - I added just an A as "First Name") Info card is brought up by highlighting a Buddy then the CMD key and i key together.
If I then removed the letter "a" in iChat (info card) the Screen Name as Name then remains in the Address Book.
Adding a Buddy normally presumes they are not in the Address Book and "Asks" for First Name, Last Name.
However it can be linked to an existing Address Book entry by clicking the blue half arrow at the end of the Last Name line (opens a slide out to the Address Book and asks to "Pick a Card")
If you add a Buddy with an Open Chat from either the Buddies menu or the keystrokes (I have not done it with the + Button) then the Screen Name is pre-filled in the slide out (that you call window).
In the Buddies Menu the Add option changes to add in the Buddies Screen Name (the Slide Out is the same otherwise).
ICQ which has been owned by AOL for a long time still uses numbers as IDs
The Screen Name/ID is then added as that number.
In the States you can also do SMS but I can't here.
I forget which type has to have a + sign in front.
Hopefully this will provide you with some clues.

  • IChat - what "accounts" do I need?

This is going to seem a totally dumb question but here goes anyway ...
I have iChat 3.1.7 (and Chax 1.4 7), a gmail account and an AIM(?) account which I got when I tried (and subsequently abandoned) .mac
I currently use iChat with two other gmail users in a panel headed Jabber List and to an active .mac user via a panel headed Buddy List.
    So far, so good.
But I'm aware that there are other IM systems out there - including at least ICQ, MSN and Yahoo and probably several others too.
Now, I'm also a member of an active forum of like minded sports supporters and I want to be able to make myself available to chat to as many of them as possible.
I presume, therefore, that I need to create accounts for each of those other Chat types/providers but can I then list all my correspondents in either my Jabber or Buddy panels? For example, I also have a never used Yahoo Messenger account but it seems, to my untutored eye, that I need to have their own Yahoo Messenger application open to use their service and not iChat.
Is there a way of combining each and all of the disparate Chat formats into iChat to cut down the number of applications I need to have open?
Or am I, as a confused iChat rookie, missing the whole point and speaking through my capacious fundamental orifice? I have, really I have, tried to RTFM - or at least the Tiger "Missing Manual", but alas the pearls of wisdom therein just go straight over my head.
Thanks from a bewildered potential iChatter!

Thanks, Tony. There's a fair bit to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest there - I will attempt so to do and come back if I get terminally confused!
    Thanks for the pointer.

  • Using iChat for Garageband training

There have been a couple of mentions in this forum regarding iChat and Screen Sharing where the app in question is an audio app - the only audio shared is the microphone. One solution is to use Soundflower. Soundflower itself is simple.. after installing, use Garageband's audio preferences to output to Soundflower, and set iChat's audio input to Soundflower. This sends all the GB audio directly to iChat. However, that excludes the Mac's own microphone and anything I might wish to say - and be heard.
The same problem is encountered when trying to do Quicktime Screen Recording - the audio is either the system microphone, or, using Soundflower, the internal audio application.
An Audio Midi Setup "aggregate device" allegedly allows multiple sound sources to be mixed together. But I can't quite suss out how this works.
    A block diagram would be:
    Garageband audio out>Soundflower
Aggregate device: Mac Mic + Soundflower (Garageband output)
Aggregate device is set as the iChat audio input device
If it were that simple, then why was SoundflowerBED created??
Since I have no one at this time to try an iChat with, I may try this combination with a QT Screen Recording. If anyone's used this combination, please lay your wisdom on me !!
    thanks - Karl out West

    Hi,
iChat was first developed as an AIM client.
That means you can Text chat at least to AIM Screen Names, Apple IDs (@mac.com and @me.com), ICQ and other email type names that are allowed similar to the Apple IDs (Normally a deal by the persons ISP)
Video and Audio only chats are possible between AIM and iChat (Earlier versions of AIM on a PC do better)
There is a Third Party app called Trillian for the PC that can also do Audio only and Video chats.
At iChat 3 Jabber Support was added.
An iChat to iChat Video chat can be done with Jabber Buddy lists (Screen Names) at both ends as iChat involves the same video codecs (same for Audio Only chats)
To other Jabber Clients on any platform is Text Only.
GoogleTalk is a Jabber server. However iChat cannot Video chat to the webmail Chat option as this is different Video codecs again (Flash based) and is different again from the PC GoogleTalk app which iChat cannot Video or Audio chat to.
    Screen Colour.
In System Preferences > Desktop and Screen Saver you can choose from a range of presets supplied by Apple and it also links to the photos in iPhoto or the option to navigate the hard drive to any pic you have, giving you the option from a plain colour to any picture you want.
However if the Mac has been set up with only one User Account if you change it your Husband may not like it.
It may be better to create a second account on the mac for you
System Preferences > Accounts. Then you can have all your own settings and your Address Book will be separate from his. (And your iChat Buddy List)

  • Video Chats including Audio from iChat to various PC clients

    Hello,
besides using alternatives to iChat like Skype, aMSN or SightSpeed, are there any smart ways like plugins or add-ons to iChat allowing full AV (video AND audio!) conferences with various PC AV chat clients?

The "target" is to have only iChat running and to avoid having several AV clients installed on the Mac.

As to which end (other than changing to AIM 5.9 as well) the problem lies is difficult to say.
    1) If you Mac Firewall is On do the stuff around the Second pic here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_ports
    2) Have you set these ports or set UPnP to work in your Modem or Router ?
    3) Have you gone to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the drop down to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN
These are the most common reasons on a Mac.
