IChat to support Hotmail?

Hi,
Just wanted to put my suggestion to everyone. Hope to be around here more.
Microsoft messenger 7 and 6 is really poor! It makes the Keyboard crash, constantly exits sometimes and doesn't even support Video calls.
Will iChat ever support Hotmail (MSN) accounts? this would save my day. The only bit of software/hardware I have is that program and it would be wonderful to get away from Microsoft all together but unfortunately I need MSN messenger to talk to my friends/colleagues. Some of my colleagues use iChat/AIM so Im always using that but I have to almost always have Microsoft Messenger open.
Tell me what you think.
- Joby.

  • New FCS with iChat Theatre support

    Good day..
With the new release of FCS it brags about iChat theatre support to collaborate with others. Not sure how to do this since the existing Apple LCDs do not have isight, nor does Apple make or sell the stand-alone isight cam. The newer 24"LED monitor is made to connect to laptops. Even the demo vid on tis feature does not show the setup only the onscreen view of ichat.
I'd love it if they finally put isights in all the screens (or have the option). I'd swap-out one of my 30" for that same size with a builtin isight version. Obviously they can do it, its in the 24".

Until Apple makes the product you would like to have, you can choose which cam to use with iChat.
Apple Stores sell this one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS665VC/A?mco=NDkwODcyNA
However, other "UVC" cams will also work on any Mac that is running OS X 10.4.9 or later with no additional drivers or other software required. Just be sure any new webcam you buy meets the "UVC" standards so they work "as is" with your Mac's OS.
Another alternative, although not a webcam, is to use a camcorder that connects via Firewire (if you already have or are planning to buy a camcorder anyway). Just plug it in and try it with iChat to determine with certainty whether it has the compatibility you want.  Compared to dedicated webcams, a compatible Firewire camcorder's higher quality images may be worth its generally less convenient and clumsier connections.
You could also consider Firewire webcams. A couple that may still be available are:
       Fire-i http://www.firewire-1394.com/fire-i-webcam-unibrain.htm and
      iSweet http://www.welovemacs.com/isweet1.html
This old review gives you some opinions on the relative merits of a few different Firewire webcams:
      http://www.macworld.com/article/27783/2003/12/firewirewebcams.html
Be aware that some webcams, particularly lower cost or older models, may not have integrated microphones, auto exposure, auto focus, or other features that might be important to you. To avoid disappointment, determine you requirements and carefully check the features of any webcam you consider buying.
    EDIT ADDED
By the way, in my testing with apps other than FC, (images/videos from iPhoto, QT, and Preview,) iChat Theatre image quality at the other end is FAR below that seen versus sending the original file to your contact. As an FCP user, I expect you demand high-quality video. Again in my experience, iChat Theatre can work as a quick preview, but it is NOT useable for sharing or collaborating on critical video or images. As seen in this search, I am not the only one who has noticed this.

  • Iphone 3G - Does it support Hotmail?

So the main reason I didn't get the first edition Iphone was due to its lack of hotmail support. As great as MobileMe looks I've been using hotmail for years and changing my email address is something i'd like to avoid...
So does the new 3G iphone make this easier or do I need to wait another year for version 3.0?

izymail.com is the BEST solution for free hotmail on the iPhone.
It's also free. I've been using it with no charges. They never asked for credit card info.
Visit the site and click the iPhone screenshot.
Step 1 says to register. Click it, enter you hotmail address and password and little captcha code (you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it).
Click on the iPhone screenshot again, then follow on to Step 2. Step by step pictures how to set it up under "Other".
Works flawlessly and you'll never even notice any difference.

  • I cannot open my Hotmail emails from Firefox. I have been on the hotmail Help Forum and they suggest to use Internet Explorer. Does Forefox not support Hotmail now?

    Hi,
I can log into hotmail but cannot open my emails or go to Sent items or anything. I have gone on the Hotmail Help Forum and MANY people are having the same problem. Hotmail say we should use Internet explorer and they do not really answer about using Firefox.
People using Firefox 3 and 4 are having problems.
Also, i downloaded Forefox 4.0.1 and it was not fully compatible with Kaspersky - has this problem also now been resolved?
In summary - is Forfox 4.0.1 NOT comaptible with Hotmail and Kaspersky?

Sorry, I can't help with Hotmail, beyond clearing the cache - I haven't used it for 11 or 12 years now. Surprising that a Firefox 3.6 version would have trouble there, as 3.6 has been around for well over a year and Hotmail problems are usually with a recent release of Firefox.
IMO, if Hotmail support can't help you with Firefox issues on their website and can only recommend using IE, maybe it's time to change web mail service providers. My advice is to signup with a different web mail service, one that takes Firefox seriously. Then set up forwarding in your Hotmail account to have all your Hotmail emails forwarded to that new account. Then slowly transition your email contacts over to the new email address over time. As long as you log in to Hotmail every month or two, your account there should stay active and emails sent there should get forwarded to the new email account. I have done that three times in the last decade, and the first one I transitioned from was still forwarding email thru the two intermediary accounts to my current account until last summer when that service finally changed owners and they wanted all new accounts set up or transitioned to their new software - which I didn't do - and I hadn't even signed into my account there in over 4 years and "forwarding" was still working.

  • Ichat not supported on my macmini intel?

hi all..i tried to get ichat working on my macmini intel core duo 1.66....it starts and takes quite a while to login ( it eventually does after 2-3 minutes waiting for login), but under video/audio settings it says: your computer doesn't support video/audio ...i'm using external isight...anybody with any ideas? any other service using isight works fine ( i.e. yahoo, sightspeed )
    thanks

I am using iChat with my macmini intel core duo 2.0 and it works great. I unfortunately couldn't find a iSight camera (that I could afford) so ended up using a cheap generic camera (image CCD). I also use an old JVC DV camera with iChat and that works as well. Login is a matter of seconds. I use AIM directory service (not .Mac). Which directory service are you using? I'll be happy to work with you on the various settings if that will help.

  • IChat Tech support?

My friend told me you could contact support using iChat. Is this true and how do I do it?

You can connect to check your set-up and connection with Apple autoresponders.
Add these to your buddy list:
    appleu3test01 AIM
    appleu3test02 AIM
    appleu3test03 AIM
    appleu3test01 @mac.com
you also can check if you have enough bandwidth to host chats up to 4 people.
Check Ralph John's site for all iChat issues, the site is an Encyclopedia on all iChat matters and is useful for first time users as well as advanced technological officers.

  • Does iChat now support iMessage?

I am trying to figure out how to send iMessage messages to my friends using iChat but failing horribly. In other words, I am iMessaging with my friends on my iPhone but would like to type a message using my laptop to them as well. Is this possible to do?

    Hi,
iChat and SMS is limited to computers set up to "be in" the United states to Phones in the United States ona service that supports the AIM SMS forwarding.
That mean that out of all those "Ifs" only the location of the computer can be fooled/sort of spoofed.

  • HT2515 Will iChat be supported by Mountain Lion OS?

When will it be available, I need it to do my work!

    Hi,
Mountain Lion is Available now (for Intel Core 2 Duo Processor or above)
I have successfully called Messages in Mountain Lion from a  computer running iChat 3, 4 and 5 in Panther (OS X 10.4), Leopard (OS X 10.5) and Snow Leopard (OS 10.6).
I do have an issue calling from Messages to iChat 3 in video at present and have not found an answer as of yet.
    Generally it is compatible.
If you mean does Messages do the things iChat does then the answer is yes.
What it also does is send iMessages to iOS devices.

  • Cant install new software only attempts to open with ichat

    Hello,
I must have changed some settings I shouldnt have because whenever I try and download certain applications like limewire I can download it but when I click to install it opens ichat and says ichat cant support the application. What should I do?!
    Thanks!
    Becky

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like the Open with setting for the
installer files got set to another application by
    mistake.
Control-mouse click the said documents and select
Open with...'s Other. There will be an option to
select Disk Utility for dmg files, Installer for pkg
    files.
By the way, I'd not attempt to download Limewire. It
is an extremely buggy application, and frequently
point to point (P2P) software can lead to bad
software being installed that could harm your
computer. A lot of illegally distributed software
exists behind Limewire and other P2P software titles.
Good places to download public domain software
    are:
    http://www.macupdate.com/
    http://www.versiontracker.com/
No extra downloader is necessary. If it is neither
pkg nor dmg file you are trying to open, tell us
which suffix file you are trying to open, and we can
recommend an alternative software title for it.
thank you for your responce. once i right clicked and said open with disc utlity it opened but then closed again. i tried this several times and no change.

  • Is it possible to use iChat for non network video conferanci

    Hi all,
I am looking for a little help please. This may be a fruitless question, but here it goes. I have a deaf 5th grader. TTY relay is essentially a thing of the past, and all of her friends are using 'video phone' to keep in touch. Anyway, today we got a Sorenson VRS router and video phone camera from her school, and it uses our existing cable internet connection. It is a BUNCH of stuff to hook up to an already crowded system. Does anyone have any ideas about the possibility of using iChat for my daughter to connect to her friends that will be using a different system?
Sorry if this is the question of a Neophyte. I am learning this deaf world as i go.
    Thanks,
    Chad

    HI Randell,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
I can tell you what iChat will do and maybe that will help.
iChat is an Instant Messaging service that uses the AIM servers. Therefore it is an AIM client.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger.
You can join this service in several ways.
    1) By having the AOL Package where AOL is your Internet provider (ISP)
    2) By having the stand alone Application referred on these Discussions as the AIM application (comes in several version for PC, Macs, Linux and phones although each version varies as to what it can do - see side bar at link page).
    3) Or by another application that is also an AIM client.
On a Mac that can be Proteus or AdiumX, there are PC AIM clients like Trillian.
Some AIM clients only do some of the features.
FOr instance iChat to PC AIM can Video (Moving Pics and Sound) but not Audio only.
iChat to Trillian on a PC can do both Video and Audio only if the PC end has the Pro version of Trillian ($25)
All clients can at least Text chat.
Many can send files and pics as well as Text chatting.
iChat can support Text chatting, Audio Chats and Video chats. Any USB Mic will work for Audio chats. Many Firewire DV Camcorders also work, many Firewire Webcams also work and some USB cams can be made to work with iChat.
To do this iChat needs a fast enough Mac (Procesor speed) and a fast enough interent Connection Speed.
In iChat 2 there is felt to be a better chance of success with connections to PC machines running either AIM (or the AOL package) or Trillian Pro for Video chats.
Text chats and Video chats can be done to the same Buddy (contact) at the same time. I would have thought this would be ideal as it provides a chance to practice lip reading skills and not missing any of the info.
What iChat 2 can not do.
    1) Chat to other services like MSN or Yahoo!
    2) Chat or link to Video phones.
    3) Video to Mobile (cell) phones.
    4) Connect to other Video conferencing services.
    For more info start here
Faq on how to start in iChat
This tells you more about connecting to PCs.
More info than you might need at this stage http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/
    What iChat 3 adds.
    1) Upto 4 people in a Video chat
    2) Access to the Jabber service (Another Instant Messaging service). This also can use Jabber servers that provide things called Tranports Gateways to other IM services which allows Text chatting to Buddiies on these services.

  • Help! iChat for Mac OS X Lion! Yahoo Messenger!

So today i just got Mac OS X Lion on Mac App Store, I just install it, a FRESH install, and i tried to contact my friend with iChat. I heard that iChat now supported Yahoo Messenger! So i log on my account, work perfect with Text chatting, but when i tried to Video Call chatting, it's said: "Yahoo! is not supported video calls."
    Plz help me!!!

    Hi,
    iChat and Audio.
This has always been set by the System > Preferences > Sound > Input as far as the volumes you Buddies hear you.  (Rather you turning this up has greater effect than them turning up their master volume)
This for a long time presumed there was only the Internal Mic or Line in on most Macs. (And that you weren't using Line-in despite showing both choices in the iChat Mic Drop down in iChat Preferences > Video Section)
Later this became an issue for Headsets particularly Blue Tooth ones.
These require that you set the System Preferences choice and volume first before then choosing them in iChat.
(If already set change both choices to something else.
    Close iChat
Set the System Preferences choice to the Blue Tooth or Headset.
Now open iChat and set the choice there.)
In all cases since iChat 4 it has been possible to set the Volume level for a device (mic) in System Preferences and that it does not change you can use that selection in iChat but change the choice in system Preferences for other input/app combos.  (i.e. once the volume is set for the device iChat uses the choice/headline device in System Preferences can be changedready for other apps)
I have never tested the Yahoo Beta in any build or sub version number for Audio Chats before today.
I tested between my G4/1Ghz Dual Processor running Leopard and my MacBook Pro running Snow Leoaprd.
Yahoo is allowed thogh both Mac Firewalls and the Modem/router combined device is doing UPnP.
Despite checking my Mic Settings in System Preferences on the G4 the Audio level seemed somehow to get turned down.
It stayed in the "right" place after I checked again.
Strangely the G4's older Yahoo Version 3.0.0 can Initiate an Audio Chat but the option is greyed out on the current Yahoo Version 3.0.1 that the MacBook Pro is running.
I will do some more digging.
However it would seem in your case that the Mic choice and Volume level would be the palce to start as it effects both apps.

  • IChat 6.0 on lion and MSN messenger

With iChat 6.0 we all can use jabber , is there a way to add MSN messenger in ichat without use external plugin like transcript from other jabber account?

It should be noted that since iChat now supports IM plug-ins, there may be a third-party plu-gin of MSN's protocol in the future. But I doubt it will come from Apple.

    Hi.
You have to configure Port Forwarding on the Verizon FIOS Modem Router for iChat.
    http://support.actiontec.com/doc_files/MI424WR_Rev._G_User_Manual_30.16.0_v1.pdf
    Excerpt from pages 109 & 110:
"To set up basic port forwarding:
    1. Click the arrow next to “IP Address forward to or select from menu” to display  a menu and either enter the IP address of the item to port forward from, or choose an item from the drop-down menu (choose your machine by host name, since the internal ip address changes from time to time, after the lease time expires).
    2. Click the arrow next to “Application to forward...” and select a pre-configured application from the drop-down menu (if iChat is not present in the list, you'll have to set up Advanced Port Forwarding).
    3. Click Apply. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen. "

    2. Enter the host name (from the drop-down list) or local IP address of the computer providing the service in the “Specify IP” text box. Note that only one local network computer can be assigned to provide a specific service or application.
    3. Click Advanced.
    4. Select the Internet protocol to be provided from the “Protocol” drop-down list.  Depending on the protocol selected, additional options appear in the screen.
    5. Select the connection with which this port forwarding rule will be active from the “WAN Connection Type” drop-down list.
    6. To select a port to forward communications to (this is optional), select “Specify” from the “Forward to Port” drop-down list, then, in the text box that appears, enter the port number. If no port is identified, select “Same as
    Incoming Port.”
    7. If this port will be active all the time, select “Always” from the “Schedule” drop-down list. If the rule will only be active at certain times, select “User Defined” and click Add. Then, add a schedule rule (for more details about
schedule rules, see the “Advanced Settings” chapter of this manual).
    8. If source and destination ports need to be specified, select Specify from the drop-down menu list (by clicking on the appropriate arrow), then entering the port numbers.
    9. Click Apply to save the changes. The new port forwarding rule appears in the “Applied rules” table at the bottom of the screen."
