IChat transcripts gone.

I was using iChat for the first time in quite a while. I planned to review the iChat later as it contained a lot of complex and inportant information that I was depending on iChat to save for me. When I went back to read it I discovered that iChat was not retaining the transcripts. (So yes, I clicked the check box.) I also noticed that all my previously saved iChat transcripts were nowhere to be found.
A couple of questions:
I had previously set up iChat set up to save the transcripts. The last time I used this know this feature was working was before upgrading from Snow Leopard. Did the upgrade change my preferences (and if so, why this one and not others.?)    (I may have the old ones backed up somewhere from before the upgrade.)
Perhaps Apple saw this option as a security problem? if so why change it without telling me. (I'm just supposing. I don't know how this happened.)
Are iChat transcripts dumped in some cases? ie when caches are flushed, or some such?
Thanks to anyone who has any insight for me.

HI,
The Transcripts stay where they are put right up to and including Messages Beta.
The Default Location is the Home Folder/Documents/ichats although this can be changed in some versions
I find using Spotlight to search for "ichats" gets the Folder as "Top Hit"
With some OS upgrades (example Leopard to Snow Leopard) I have found the folder has sometimes revertyed to the Default place rather than where I may have put it is  an earlier version rather than losing it completely.
I have used iChat 2 through 6 and Messages Beta and could not be precise about which version get "moved"
IF you had used a place in the Home Folder/Library to store the iChats folder then you will not find this in Lion using Spotlight or a manual search as this folder is now Hidden.
(Go to the Finder > Go Menu > Hold down ALT key and then Select Library)
I would also say that on occasions I have found that iChat has not been saving transcripts when I thought it was.
This also normally happens at version Upgrades  (in Messages beta it is "On" and cannot be turned Off)

  • IChat is gone after Mountain Lion

I recently updated my macbook pro to Mountain Lion and now, iChat is gone. How do you contact with your friends who still have iChat when you have Messages?

You would need an account for .Me or AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), etc. Then you add the account in Messages' preferences.
Check out the Help screens for Messages, they cover everything:

  • IChat Transcript Creation Dates

Hi and thanks for reading this post.
Problem: I have my iChat transcripts all showing the same creation date which is obviously wrong.
Question: Anyone know of a way to get the iChat transcript name information so that is it matches the creation date of the actual chat?
ex. macon on 2005-05-01 at 00.09.ichat with a creation date of May 05 2005 12:09 AM
I think it would be cool if you could import your chats and have iChat repair/modify this info. If anyone knows of a 3rd party solution that would be great too.
    Thanks,
    bimism

Thanks for the tip. i saw that in my search for a solution. I do remember Chax saying at some point that it needed to fix the creation dates but it's not asking me that at present. I'll play around with some chats changing dates to see if I can get Chax to try to fix the dates, otherwise I will have to do them manually. Not with thousands of chats I won't but, there has to be a better way. I did see a perl script that organized the chats into dated folders which would be perfect if it also added the creation date base on the time of the chat.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Can't save my iChat transcripts

I've never saved my iChat transcripts, and now I'd like to, but when I go to iChat>Preferences>Messages, check "Automatically save chat transcripts", it won't allow me to Open a Folder. Just beeps. So I can't save the transcripts.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thx
    iChat 3.1.9 (v446)
    OS 10.4.11

    Restarted iChat? Sure.
But it won't allow me to select "Open Folder". I've also deleted all iChat preferences and restarted. Still can't do it. Works on all my other Macs running 10.4.11, just not this one...

  • All ichat contacts gone

    HI.
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I today, for the first time, open up ichat all my contacts are gone. Last time I used ichat was on Leopard. It then worked fine (with all my contacts there).
    Ideas anyone?
    /Anders

    Hi,
Would´nt mobileme sync back my contacts?
    Not exactly.
If you you backed up your Address book and every Buddy was listed in the Address Book then yes you would have all the Screen Names on your computer..
In reality all your Buddies are in your Buddy List held at the AIM servers if you use AIM, @mac.com or @me.com names.
It is the iChat Software that links this to the Address Book Entries to give Buddies their "Real Names"
If you have a Screen Name your Buddy list (at least the Screen Names only) are then available on any computer or any app that can login to the AIM Servers.
The same applies to any Jabber or GoogleTalk ID you were using with their relevant servers
I would still try the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist deletion.

  • Removing Attachments in iChat Transcripts

I am using iChat to save transcripts of my conversations. I got a 150MB file transfer from a friend today, and I would like to keep the conversation without the file attachment. I don't mind hand editing the file if it comes to that, but I want to get rid of the attachment.
    Any thoughts?
edit: That's why I should proofread.

    HI Jason,
The file itself should be dragable to the Desktop as a first stage.
You should then be able to extract the rest of the text and save to a TextEdit doc.
This will make it a smaller file to save.

  • IChat transcript saving not working

For some reason, ever since I upgraded to Tiger/iChat 3.0, the app is not saving my iChats. I still have the ~/Documents/iChats folder there (and obviously have the option checked in the prefs), but no new ones are being saved. I have tried deleting iChat's prefs files to no avail. When I click on the "open folder" button in the prefs, I get an error sound.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    TIA

I now realize the problem must be that my Documents folder isn't in the boot directory, I've got an alias to it on a different partition.
Everything else seems to work fine with this structure, but iChat doesn't like it.
I can't really create a new Documents folder just for iChat, because everything else uses my Docs folder on the different partition. Ugh.
    Anyone have suggestions?

  • Ichat is gone

I click ichat to open it and when I clicked it a ? mark appeared over the icon and then I clicked exit and it went to the trash. In the trash it says "Recovered Files" and when I drag the files out of the trash to open them Text Edit opens to a blank screen. Should I try downloading ichat from the cd again, or look for it somewhere? PLEASE HELP!

As there is no Disk 2 with a Leopard Install it would help if we knew which iChat version on to what Mac you are trying to Reinstall

  • IChat AV is gone, is there a way to get it back?

    Hello,
This may seem bizzare, but my iChat AV got deleted out of my Applications folder. It was an accident, and I know that it is the equivalent of computer sin - not looking at your Trash before you empty it - but now iChat is gone.
I was wondering if it still resides on my Tiger installation discs, and if it does, how could I get it back onto my computer?
    Thanks,
    Mitch

  • My iChat is gradually breaking down...

Yesterday I was able to open my iChat and my buddy list would appear but none of my buddies were online or active. I decided to check with a friend who was online at the time but he didn't appear on my buddy list as active. I decided to restart my Mac to see if that would help but since then I haven't been able to log into iChat at all. I now get the following message:
    'Could not connect to AIM
The AIM service is temporarily unavailable. Wait several minutes and try again. The AIM service is temporarily unavailable. Wait several minutes and try again.'
Needless to say I've tried connect to iChat a number of times since then.
I'm not sure what's going on but since yesterday my iChat has gone from working fine to a non-active buddy list to not working at all. Can someone please help...?

I have tried everything included above, plus putting a clove of garlic in my router and it still doesn't work.
Would you believe it, I just disconnected my ADSL router connection and connected it again and it works.
(I did try this earlier and it had no effect at that time).
These past 3 days or so have been very unusual with this kind of thing happening with AIM.

  • Dont save iChats in iMessage Beta on Mac

How can I set the new iMessage Beta on my Mac to NOT save the chats in iChat folder?

Simple enough to remedy. Just choose "Open Selected Folder". Finder will open the location all chats are stored in. You can then select any or all folders, then CMD + Delete them. Note, you should be careful when deleting any item if you are unsure, but i've deleted all dated folders in iChat transcripts location without any ill effect.

  • Line Spacing In Mail and iChat

I recently downloaded and installed the 10.6.3 Combo upgrade. As a result, the line spacing in both Mail and iChat have gone crazy! The font size is correct, but the spacing is huge. So, it both reading and writing emails nearly impossible.
I am not sure if it is something in the Upgrade, or something in my system. I have tried everything I know: Emptying All Caches, Deleting plist files, Repairing Permissions.Nothing seems to help. Which leads me to believe that something was altered in the 10.6.3 Upgrade to cause this problem.
Anyone have the same problem? Anyone have a solution?

Have you added, removed, or otherwise altered any fonts?

  • Spotlight and ichat

my spotlight in tiger used to search through content within ichat messages...how do i do that in leopard? it's not working

Make sure you have chat logging turned on. In iChat, go to Preferences -> Messages and check the box next to "Automatically save chat transcripts to: <folder>"
Also, make sure you have "Mail Messages" checked in Spotlight Preferences -> Search Results. I'm not sure why iChat transcripts are designated as "Mail Messages," but there you go.
