IChat unable to audio only chat to AIM pc user

Hi. I have never been able to audio only chat to AIM pc (Vista) user. Every time it starts to connect, say "connecting" then fails and said user declined invitation. Which I know she has not, this also happens with another friend of mine (Win XP). Does anyone know a fix for this? Are there any special settings, mac or pc end? Thanks.

AIM on a PC is now at version 6.8
This version is actually still in beta as well.
the Support Pages at AIM only list that AIM 6.5 (the previous version) does not Video chat to iChat.
AIM 6.1 did but is no longer downloadable.
AIM 5.9 is still downloadable for XP users (it does not work in Vista)
Trillian Pro is an option as it has worked since AIM 5.9 (it's a PC App)
Also try Mebeam. This uses Flash in a Web Browser and can create Video Chat rooms for just you and your Buddy.

  • Audio only chats with AIM on PC?

Some older posts indicate it is not possible to initiate audio only chats between macs with iChat 2.1 and PCs running AIM. Is this still true with AIM version 5.9.6? Or should that work? I have tried, and can do a text chat just fine, but there is no audio (phone) icon on my buddy list for the buddy on the PC, so I can't initiate audio. Could it be firewall and port setting problems?

  • How to do audio only chat?

I see under the Video menu there is an "Audio Chat Enabled". I usually prefer to do audio only chats rather than video. How to start an audio only chat?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Well, I really want to use it with my family. My son has Skype and he has it always running. My wife uses iMessages only. I like how iMessages is integrated with iOS--the program doesn't have to be running. With Skype, you have to make sure it is in the background.
Neither of them (and not of my friends) use any of the other Chat programs.

  • Can't connect with video chat with AIM pc user.

My friend just recently bought a new pc, and he uses the latest aim for windows. we have tried to video chat but when either one of us sends the invite, the app takes a while and then says either one of us has not accepted the request which isn't true. i haven't done anything to my settings because my video chat works with others, including another friend with a pc, which makes me think it's my friends computer. the odd thing is though he's told me it works with other people he's tried it with. what are things that i can do to help rectify the problem.

  • How can iChat get to the community chats at AIM?/AOL?

I've been looking for a way to get into the community forums with iChat AV... Does anyone know if that can be done?

    Hi Soundman5,
Not sure quite what you mean here.
Do you want iChat to type response to the Apple Discussions ?
    This can not be done.
Do you want iChat able chatrooms ?
    See here http://i.chat.free.fr/ for some.
Did you mean the iChat based on-line help that used to be available for some applications support at Apple.
This seems to have been stopped or suspended.

  • Audio/video chat works but audio only doesn't

Audio-video chats (both 2-way and one-way) work, but audio ONLY chats don't work (connection error). One machine is running 10.4.2 and the other 10.3.9. Doesn't seem like this would be a firewall or bandwidth issue if AV chats are working fine. Why would this happen?

I have the same issue, as well as the other iChat issues on other posts. When our offices (SF area & LA area, CA, US) were on 10.3.9, no problems with audio or video chats (we all have AIM screen names). Then the boss upgraded to 10.4.1. He could a/v chat with anyone inside our network and could video (with sound) with the other office, but not audio only. When he is at home he could a/v with anyone. We upgraded one more computer in our office to 10.4.1 and it was able to audio chat to other Tiger machines outside the office, but not Panther machines (can chat with anyone inside too). Now the boss and I have upgraded these same machines to 10.4.2 and the audio chat doesn't work outside the office anymore and we still can't chat with Panther machines outside the office.
Our office has Netopia Cayman 3546-002 ADSL Broadband Gateway on SBC Yahoo DSL at 4936 kbps down/493 kbps up. I called Netopia and had them help me open up the ports (I had them look at the apple tech document so they could help me get it right). It has NAT enabled and all the computers on this LAN have static addresses. Most of the computers access the LAN through the airport express (which just bounces the signal from the wired side). I think we have port forwarding or mapping set up for our two servers...the router looks at the address from the WAN side and routes it to the address on the LAN side. Firmware is up to date on the router.
I did not originally set up this network and have spent much time reading the user manual for the modem/router (it's a combo device) and trying suggestions here and from Level 2 at Apple. They say it is our network, but I don't know how to fix it.
I don't think this router has any UPnP capability, that I could find in the manual. Also what is SIP? I need a description of it or at least what that acronym stands for. Also, I've seen stuff about using the Terminal to change the telenet port. This routers telenet is set to 23, that should be fine for iChat, right? No conflict?
Please help this tortured soul!! Thanks.

  • One way video with AIM PC user?

I understand that you can do a one way video chat when the other user has iChat AV, and I know that you can do a two way video chat with a PC AIM buddy. My question is this: is it possible to conduct a one way video chat with a PC AIM buddy? I have an iSight with iChat AV and would like to be able to have a one way video chat with my wife who is out of state.
She does not yet have a camera of her own, but does use instant messenger with the latest AOL software on her Dell laptop. When I see her online, can I initiate the one way video chat to which she will be able to both see and hear me?
    Somebody, please help...
    Thanks!

    Hi Alexander,
In theory it should work to ANY AIM client (AIM, Trillian or iChat) that can do Audio Video chat. (AIM for Mac can not)
I can, in fact, do One-Way to my wife's PC which does not have camrea or Mic and do not get the problem. I can start the chat in either direction.
Other people report this 10 sec problem.
I have not come across anything that is a specific tweak that will make it work.
The Mac is the one listed below,
The PC is running XP home and the processor is 1.6Ghz.
The Mac is on Tiger (10.4.2) and iChat 3.0.1
The PC is on Automatic Updates and has Service Pack 2 install.
The PC is running AIM 5.9 (not sure of the sub numbers)
The router and modem (2 devices) are set up as Static IP from Modem to router and UPnP and Static IP from router to computers (in this case both ethernet), agian with UpnP enabled
The Modem is a Spedtouch 510v4 and has the SIP unbound from port 5060 as it SIP aware.
Having been succesful in Panther - I tried it in Tiger and it failed initially. (the Video icon under the PC text chat disappeared)
I resorted to using the menu items on the PC and was sucessful in asking for a Video chat. This put the Video icon back under the Text chat window and now works in both directions.
It is fair to say that the router which also handles the wireless connections of my children has been rebooted several times which also might make a difference. This has certainly helped other people with Tiger.

  • Can't video chat with AIM only .mac users like me.

    Hi,
I'm running the latest iChat AV.
There seems to be alot of posts regarding people being unable to chat with .mac and only AIm but my problem is exactly the opposite. I can only video chat with other .mac users and not with AIM users. (I am .mac).
Nothing here involves a PC, all accounts are on macs. Any .mac friends I try and video chat to it works great, but any mac AIM users all I kept getting are 'failed to respond' messages. I failed to respond or they did depending on who initiated the video chat. All type chatting works fine. I have no firewalls and plenty of bandwith. To the best of my knowledge the AIM users have no firewalls either. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Rodi,
There has been one report of a .mac user contacting .mac because of this problem. He said he was informed that they were aware of the problem exsiting for some users but that they could not tell which ones.
They did something to his account that made it work (some problem with the .mac user list and the AIM Servers)
I suggest you explore this as well.

  • Can't video/audio chat with AIM user

As iChat AV seems to be the only IM app that will let me see someone else's webcam (I don't have one) & use audio chat, I'm trying to use it for the first time. I've got my friend to set up an AIM account, but... if I try to chat to them, the audio/video chat features are greyed-out. And apparently my friend's AIM says I'm not set up for audio or video chat.
I've looked at everything I can think of, checked the preferences... nothing. No idea why it won't work. It's driving us both mad... anyone got any suggestions?

    Well done, Sandra,

  • Two questions:  how do Skype and iChat compare for group video?  quality, reliability, cost, etc are important.  2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to use in the window in making an iChat buddy?  It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs.

Two questions:  1) How do Skype and iChat compare for group video?  Quality, reliability, cost, etc are important.  2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to input in the window in making an iChat buddy?  It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs, saying MobileMe, AIM, GoogleTalk (Jabber) all work. Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

  • IChat Video chat with AIM Buddy - Possible fix?

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions group. I received my MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple computer, just two days ago, and came upon this group after discovering the problems establishing a video chat with someone using AIM. With the help of "Rjin WI" I was able to verify that I could indeed have video chat Mac-to-Mac. This morning I decided to try something I should have tried on day one-I fired up AIM 5.9 on my PC, and tried to chat with myself.
I disabled all firewalls involved: the Mac firewall, the Windows SP2 firewall, and the SPI firewall on my Linksys router. I chatted with myself between two screen name for a few moments before initialising the video chat from the Mac, but was quite shocked to see on the PC "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." On the Mac was "Failed to start Video Chat because: (I) did not respond."
I tried a few more times just to be sure, but the error message was persistent. I kept looking for some button to press or question to answer in the invitation, but there was nothing to be found. Except for the "video" button in the AIM chat I had previously overlooked. I initialised the video chat from AIM, and what do you know, I received the invitation on the Mac, accepted, and was connected just fine.
I reenabled all of the firewalls again. And once again, I was able to have a video chat with myself when I sent the invitation from the PC. Trying from the Mac instantly gave me the error on the PC, and after timing out, the same error on the Mac.
Does anyone else have anything they can add to the mystery of iChat?

    Jason-
great post. i'll try and make my situation short and sweet, as I don't have the energy to try and describe every little "error" that my computer runs into. To make it short; just got the brand new macbook (thinking 'now i can actually video chat, unlike the isight which never worked and solutions/helpful advice via appletechs seemed to be non-existent). Low and behold the camera works perfectly...2x. At the time I was using airport for wireless connection, but I have since been using the computer with a linksys. Because the computer worked with the airport and not with the linksys, I thought this was were the problem existed...then the camera worked with a different user (with the linksys) so I scratched that idea. Anyways I have been trying to video chat with another macbook and there is no success whatsoever. We both get the msg " did not respond) when the user accepts, the camera icon goes "shaded" but then goes back to its normal state. Both firewalls were disabled, and both of us are using linksys. I also run vonage in my place if that could somehow play into this scenario. I apologize for such a poor post, but my energy regarding this matter is limited since I am so tired of trying get this video chat working. (first a worthless isight, then a macbook which can't even function with another macbook. in addition, to put it lightly, i am very dissatisfied with applecare regarding this issue.)

  • Two-way video chat with other (audio-only) participants?

Is it possible to have a five-way chat in iChat with
. - myself and one other participant via video, and
. - three other participants via audio only?
I know there's an option for one-way video conferencing, where only one person in a conference has video and the other(s?) have audio, but what about two with video and the others with audio?
And if we did this, could the three audio participants see the two video participants even if the three don't participate via video?

    Hi,
You can start A One Way Video chat with a Buddy without a Camera.
You can add others up to the standard 4 people (you and three others) and some can be audio Only.
You do have to have a Mac of a G4/1Ghz dual or above and have a Upload speed of 256 k at the very Least (Apple Specs say 384k) although more is preferable when you are Host.
Ideally the Host should be the fastest Mac with the fastest connection.
Invite Camera able Buddies first then Audio Only Buddies by clicking on the green A/V icon they are showing in the Buddy list.

  • Unable to connect to Group chat using AIM under Messages

Is anyone else having a problem using the group chat function in Messages.  My friend said that everytime she sent the invitiation, it said that group chat was not supported by this client.  I had problems in the past with Trillium when I first switched to my iMac, so I added a new AIM account to chat.  Tonight was my first time trying to participate in a group chat since I upgraded to Mountain Lion and Messages.. I couldn't find any settings that could be causing this.  I also tried to use the stand alone version of AIM, and it still did not work.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Using three different Screen Names on three different different computers I can do a group chat using AIM valid names.
I started on a computer with iChat 4 and invited a Screen Name on the iMac to a group chat (prelisted on the G4/iChat 4 computer)
That has the option to "Show the participants"  - which has disappeared from the Messages > View Menu.
Once I had that Accepted on the iMac (it does pop up an Accept/Decline option buttons in Messages) I then called a Screen Name that is only on my MacBook Pro (iChat 5).
I then closed/ended the Chat on the iMac and went to the File Menu > Go to Chatroom and changed it to the account that had been in the chat and entered the room name I had started from on the G4 (iChat 4)
iChat 4 and 5 reported me as leaving the Group chat and coming back again. I also checked I could IM and that was delivered.
I tried inviting a second Screen Name that the iMac uses.
The Invite shows in the same Chat window but you cannot separate out which account is then making the reply.
i.e it does not show as a separate chat/Invite and then make it join the group chat you have going on.
The iChat 4 that did the Inviting shows the Buddy as being "Invited" but in Messages I have no way of Accepting.
The upshot of this is that Messages can join an Existing group chat using the File Menu > Go to Chat Room
The Account you are calling from may have to be changed in the drop item which is a drop down.
    Uploaded with Skitch!
Then you need to add the room name.
There is a definite issue if you want to use two Screen Names in the same chat.
