ICHAT using macbook to connect to imac at home

Hi, I think a pretty basic question but for some reason couldnt get it to work!..Recently been away & tried to get in touch with the kiddies through ichat using my macbook (i have an imac at home)...do i have to have different a/c's or is there any other solution that i am missing?...many thanks

Hi,
I See you have linked or replied to my post.
I was trying to find out if the names were linked to your current MobileMe account.
A Trial MobileMe Account will not work in iChat if the Trial has run out. (@mac.com ones do)
At the MobileMe change from the .Mac (@mac.com name issue) you could decide to keep an @Mac.com name for your MobileMe Account.
Therefore you could have a MobileMe Account that has two working email IDs but they will not work in iChat (It is the same as if [email protected] was adding the Buddy [email protected] and trying to Video to "themselves")
I think Defcom has made it clear where you should be going for the New Account.

  • Problems using Macbook to connect to LAN at home

Hello, I'm a first time mac user so bear with me
My home LAN is connected by several cables in a few areas of the house, using a router. I previously had the cable hooked up to my desktop PC in a room. It works fine, plug&play most of the time. The times that it doesn't work, I re-insert the cable plug until it works. However, when I try to connect certain cables from other rooms into the macbook it doesn't work - nothing is detected, not even when I try out the network diagnostics. What could be the problem? Is it that my home network (router on all pcs except mine) is not always compatible with the router, or shoud that not be an issue?
What is the best way to make the entire network wireless, to be compatible with both PCS as well as my macbook?
    Thanks for your help

The new gigabit ethernet on newer Macs doesn't autonegotiate very well. Try changing your Ethernet settings (Preferences/Network/Ethernet) by changing the duplex, speed, and/or adapter type. You just have to find a combination that works.
Wireless would be much, much nicer. Just buy a $50 router, plug it into your cable modem, setup security, and you're done.

  • After setting up my brand new Airport Express 802.11n and accidentally using it to connect my iMac to the network...my iMac no longer connects through Ethernet?  Any ideas...I have tried everything without success!!

I have been using Apple technology for about 10 years starting with 1st generation iPods and our house now includes a 5 year old iMac, all versions of iPods and touches, Apple TVs (both generations) and most recently an iPad 2.  I have always told family and friends that Apple technology just works.  Unfortunately that stopped today.  I bought a new Airport Express 802.11n to use for AirTunes around my new pool.  I set it up from my iMac and accidentally used it to connect my iMac to the network for a short time.  Now I can no longer connect the iMac to the network using a hard wired Ethernet cable.  I have tried resetting everything possible, from hubs to routers to the Mac itself and it just will not connect to the network through Ethernet any longer.  I am now a very frustrated Apple user especially when the support site says I can't use the fast path support because my product was manufactured 5 years ago...I just bought it at BestBuy yesterday.  All other computers and itechnology in the house are connecting via wifi and Ethernet without any issue except from my new iMac boat anchor.  Anybody who can help me???  Thanks

John, thanks for the email so quickly.
I too hope I haven't tried "everything" either but I am reasonably technical.  I had done what you suggested to do before but I did both again.
Ethernet is yellow in the left side bar.  In the right pane it's status says Connected but then below it says "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
I have tried the assist me menu and Network Status has Ethernet Green, Network settings Yellow, ISP Green, and Internet and Server Red and Failed for both.  I have turned things off and on, checked cables, deleted all locations and tried restting them up but to no avail.  I even disconnected everything and connected the mac directly into the cable modem itself and the thing still will not connect.
    Thoughts???

  • I have an ipad also wifi at home. Would is needed to use my wifi connection while not at home?

I have an ipad also wifi at home. Would is needed to use my wifi connection while not at home?

You can't use your wi-fi connection when not at home. Heck, my wi-fi connection bales out halfway down the back garden.  Many places offer wifi hot-spots. Go google. The only (relatively) surefire way to be able to get on the internet anywhere is to have a 3G capable iPad and corresonding data plan.

  • My Macbook Air connects to ATV at home but not at work

My Macbook Air connects at home over a Time Machine network to my apple tv just fine (including airplay); when at work on a non-apple wifi network both computer and apple tv connect but cannot see each other.  As I would like to stream video to the work ATV via airplay, this is a problem...  Any ideas?

    Hello Allan Robinson,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning AirPlay:
iOS: Troubleshooting AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4215
    Try the following suggestions:
Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Using Macbook 2015 with old iMac in target display mode?

Opinions about the new 12 inch Macbook 2015 aside, I am wondering if I can use my 27 inch iMac mid-2011 in Target Display Mode.
I also had trouble finding "daisy chain" solutions to this. Ex. An accessory that will allow me to charge the Macbook while also providing a thunderbolt port in order to output the display into my iMac.
Am I just being too impatient? I have a feeling I will need to buy a load of different adapters just to try and work with the new Macbook's USB C...
Just for more information, I'm currently using my 15 Inch Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012 connected to my 27 inch iMac in target display mode through a thunderbolt cable. I'm just hoping I can have this simple setup also work with the new Macbook 2015..
    Thanks.

Yes, that model supports Target Display Mode. You will have to wait for Apple to provide adaptors for such use.

  • Use Macbook Pro RAM in iMac?

Hi, so I just upgraded my macbook Pro 15 inch (pre-unibody) to 4GB of RAM and thus have two 1GB sticks laying around. We have an iMac that serves as the family computer, and so I was wondering if I could use the PC-5300 RAM in the iMac. the iMac is a early 2008 aluminum 2.4GHz mac and uses RAM with 800MHZ bus speed.
Will the 667MHZ RAM from my Macbook Pro work? (better to have 2GB than 1GB right?)

We've been waiting for a Guinea Pig, oop's I mean a Test Subject to come along.
While some of the time it works the other way around 800MHz in place of 667MHz ram, the problem here is that even if it does it would slow the memory bus down to the slower 667MHz speed.
Truly you are better off sticking to the correct speed for your system!

  • Trying to use MacBook to connect Wii to internet

I just bought a Wii yesterday and I am trying to connect it to the internet so I can buy old school nintendo games. I have already spent way too much time on it and it won't work. The wii is recognizing the signal from my computer, but it will not pass the connection test. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
    I am running a MacBook 10.4.11 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
I have the internet coming into my macbook through ethernet DSL and it is being broadcast through airport wireless.
Again, thank you for your help!

Ensure that the firewall on the MacBook is disabled.
Unfortunately OS X's Internet sharing has no options. If the services required by the Wii aren't passed through, you will need to buy an inexpensive wireless router and use that instead of your Mac.

  • Want to use iPad to connect to IMac

This is new to me, so be nice. I have an airport extreme that works fine creating a home wireless network for my laptop and iPad. My G5 iMac is connected via ethernet directly to modum. I want to be able to connect directly to the iMac using the ipad (wirelessly) both at home and on the road. This would be to access files (movies) etc. Help. Thanks

  • HT4463 OSX Mountain Lion download fails using MacBook wireless connection

I've tried to complete this download about 8-10 times.  It fails at some point, and there when I restart from Purchases, I have to start from the beginning.  What's going on?  I'm connected on AC power, have PowerSave options turned off so it won't go into sleep, and I've disabled all screensavers.  Yet, when I come back to my download after about ~3 hours (into a 4 hour download), the Mac has been "reset" to user login screen.
Also when the app is downloading, the only progress bar I have is either in Purchases or in Launchpad:  So this quote from your help document is wrong
When you find an app that you like, click Buy (you may be asked to sign in with your Apple ID). For more information about Apple ID, please see this article. When you click Buy, the app will begin downloading automatically, and the app icon will be added to your Dock with a progress bar below the app icon. Once the app is done installing, the progress bar below the app icon will go away.

Je suis sorti de l'AppStore puis ré-ouvert. Je peux reprendre le téléchargement......je croise les doigts

  • Adaptor To Connect Intel Imac To Home Stereo?

It's been about five months that I've had my Intel Core Duo iMac sitting proudly on my desk. Question: Has anyone found a way to connect the audio outs to a standard home stereo? (No, I don't want 5.1, just good old 2 point stereo)...
    Thanks,
    Stu

My friend we have all tried to tell you that you are mistaken with your ideas about the audio output jack of the Intel iMacs, but you don't want to believe us. The output port is both digital and analog. A regular mini plug cable activates the analog output. A mini plug on a Toslink cable activates the digital output. Yes there is a 1 to 2 mm gap that is always there. No neither Apple nor anyone else makes anything special because what they expect you to use is the regular old standard mini plugs.

  • Slow connection speed imac but not macbook

Slow connection speed on my imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo running 10.6.8, I get download of 15mbs and upload of 9mbs but on my macbook pro 2.8ghz intel core i7 on the same desk I am getting 33mbs and 10mbs!
Can anyone help me out on this, thanks in advance.

The two key numbers here are: 1) Transmit Rate: 59 which is the current maximum bandwidth of the wireless connection in Mbps, and 2) The MCS Index: 6 which indicates that the iMac's connection to the BT Home Hub wireless is only using a single spatial steam. Forget the techo mumbo jumbo, your iMac is much more capable than that.
You should expect a Transmit rate closer to 130 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz radio. At least this explains the poorer performance of the iMac. I would venture to say that if you temporarily connected the iMac to the BT using an Ethernet connection the iMac would equal or exceed the MacBook Pro's bandwidth performance.
Has this always been an issue or something that has just recently started happening?

how can i can connect imac 24 pouce and macbook to use the screen of the imac ?

You can't. It requires a 2009 or later 27" iMac to use Target Display Mode. You could try using software like ScreenRecycler.

  • Best way to connect to Imac using MAcbook via internet

Hi all right I am wanting to connect to my Imac at home which is connected to the internet via my Macbook which could be any where in the World but is still connected to the internet which is the best way to get access to the HD to I can use the Itunes library on the Imac on my Macbook , Look at Files and Copy and Edit files on Imac ?
could you also try and provide me with a link to a tutorial ?

There is a built-in utility, which requires a subscription to MobileMe, called 'Back to my Mac'. It's had its ups and downs, but there are also other products which could produce more stable results like gotomypc
I would still recommend the Back to my Mac via MobileMe subscription.
