Ichat v 2.1 problems

Everytime I open ichat and try to chat with someone I get this error message.
ichat internal error!
NSInvalisArgumentException:
NSConcreteMutableAttributedStrong add Attribute:
value:range:: nil value
I can hit quit or continue but either way it crashes iChat. iChat was working perfectly fine last week and all of a sudden this week it is doing this. I haven't changed anything. Would appreciate any advice. thanks

  • IChat video conference connection problem

I am having trouble connecting in a video conference. I get to starting connection then it just hangs, or it will say that I did not respond. I have a netgear router which I know causes problems but i opened up every possible port that iChat uses. I am using a webcam supported by ichat, my video comes up fine

    Hi,
This page is for how to Access and to view only.
    It shows UPnP.
Make sure it is enabled and the setting saved.
Repeat. (Enable it again and save) as setting it twice on some firmware seems to make a difference.
This will allow the ports to be open when the Application wants them.
Make sure there si nothing set in the Port Forwarding section.

  • IChat AV video conferencing problems since update

I've noticed that may of us have posted problems we have been having with video chatting (error -8). Nobody has really brought this up but haven't you all noticed that we all started having this problem with iChat since we downloaded Tiger 10.4.10? Or maybe the recent security update of earlier this week.
My question is, if the updates did create the problems, how likely is it that Apple will realize this glitch and patch it up?

I wish I could say this problem only involves Intel Macs or OS X 10.4.10, but I think some of the problems I'm seeing may occur on PowerPC Macs with whatever version of the OS, or Intel Macs running 10.4.9 too.
If an Apple update is the culprit, or even partially responsible, it may be an update that came shortly before, or independently of, 10.4.10 and applies to all Macs regardless of CPU.
Really want to find a solution. Anyone know what the dreaded 'Chat ended with error -22' is really about? Is it bandwidth or blocked ports? Both? Neither?
One case where it was indeed an Intel Mac running 10.4.10, the user gave me the log (I'm a network admin.)

  • IChat AV video conferencing problems (again!)

The more experienced I get with Macs, the more nothing makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall quite like video conferencing with iChat. Why it can't "just work" like everything else on a Mac I just don't know.
Any way, my problem: In a nut shell I can no longer video conference with my parents (200 miles away so it makes for long telephone conversations when trouble shooting!). I can happily video conference with others so I'm thinking the problem is at their end not mine.
I'm using an iMac g5 with a BT Voyager 2091 wireless router with BT ISP. They are using an iMac g5 with a Zoom X5 on Karoo.
To complicate matters, I recently had a hard drive failure which resulted in reinstalling OSX. I have reconfigured all my port forwarding (I had to create a new static IP). And as I said I can video conference now with someone else in the same room on an iBook (I turned off my airport and used ethernet to make sure).
My parents also had to replace their router as the last one died. I set it up for them and did the port forwarding. After we couldn't make a video connection I've just been through the port forwarding again over the phone with my dad. It still doesn't work. I'm fairly confident he did it correctly (it took 3 hours!) so now I'm at a loss.
    Please help.

    Hi
Try connecting to me defcom1 .mac account.

  • Ichat audio and video problems, error 8

I've been reading the other ichat posts, and it seems that I have kind of the same problem. I can't get audio or video to work with iChat. I can send or receive invitations, but then it gives me an "error -8" message and the attempt fails.
I have a new computer, so this is the first time I've tried to do iChat audio/video chats. I connect via DSL with a Siemens speedstream modem connected to an Airport.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What is your internet up and download speeds?
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Sounds as if you need to adjust a few settings:
    Navigate to:
    System Pref>Quicktime>Streaming = 1.5
    iChat>Pref>Video>Bandwidth limit=NONE
Try making those adjustments and let's see what happens.
Feel free to chat with me, my AIM screen name is the same as on here.
    Good luck!

  • Ichat audio and video problem

my ichat audio and video don't work with any of my friends, no problems with a text chat, i'm using tiger and they all have leopard, all macs are up to date, i've tried messing around with the ports, firewall is off, internet sharing is off, i know a lot of people are having this problem, are there any answers to this that actually work, i'd appreciate any help

    Hi Ben
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
Presumably you mean this Linksys is set to Not Block Pings on the WAN port (Or whatever phrase your device has) ?
I also presume that you have done the Quicktime Setting that Steve mentions above ?
I presume the Linksys is the modem as well and it is doing UPnP ?
At this stage I have two suggestions.
    1)
Shut down the computer and remove the Ethernet cable (modem or computer end does not matter) (Make sure it will not connect Wirelessly when restarted before hand)
    Restart the computer
    Restart iChat.
    Reconnect the Internet
    Log iChat in.
    2) Try a reinstall of the COMBO version of the 10.5.2 update
Both of these suggestions have been used in previous iChat's when other things have not worked and the set up appears OK on the surface.
    Also try
    3) Rebooting the router and a Modem if separate.
    4) In System Preferences > Network > Connection method > Advanced Button > DNS tab add the DNS servers of your ISP
DO them one at a time so you know which one works.

  • Ichat Buddy Alert sound problems

i like to be alerted with a special custom sound when my family members log in to ichat, but the sounds i have been sing doesnt work now for some reason. it is odd. when i assign a song file (just a few seconds of a song that i have editied down) or a sound clip for a movie to play when a certain contact comes online, it wont play. i just get an error sound (which is also a sound file that i have chosen, so it works fine as a part of leopard, jut not for ichat). if it is a premade apple sound then it is okay and i will be alerted properly when that contact comes online. i have a bunch of sounds in the sound folders but i cant play any of them now through ichat as an event….. strange. anyone else have this problem? does anyone else use this feature?
oh, these are the exact same features i used in tiger....

    Very.
Does this Buddy have an entry in the Address Book that shows both these Screen names ?
If they actually have two Address Book entries, what happens if you add the other Screen name then delete the current one (So you effectively swap the Address Cards' iChat details).
(I am not sure if that will tell us it is the Address Book entry/Link to Info Card or just something about the Info Card).
If you have Developers Tools and therefore Property List Editor you can check the com.apple.ichat.plist and expand the bits about the Sounds/Alerts played.
It is beginning to sound like (pun intended) iChat plays the sounds differently for the different Buddy lists - but that would be crazy.
I have nothing new on this.

  • IChat V6 Port Changing Problem

    My equipment: OS X 10.7.1 - iChat V6 (927) - Yahoo account
My Problem: 1. Cant send SMS   2. Cant change port in iChat
I have seen in previous post the process for changing the ports for older versions of iChat but I have yet to see anything about V6. I also read where changing the ports might fix this SMS problem but there are no options for this under V6 iChat> Preferences> Accounts.....
I basically want to send SMS and dont have any problems with anything else. Sending SMS in the Yahoo app still works but I like iChat better. Any suggestions?
This is the only Account Options avalabile:

    Hi,
The Yahoo option does not have a place to change ports
An AIM accounts showing the same view will have 3 tabs across that pane (your second pic) (Jabber/Google have two).
Both of these types have a Server Settings tab and the ports is in there.
AIM Accounts have had a SMS option but you have to have your computer set as if it were in the United States.
(Format tab in the Text and something pane in System Preferences - Flag icon - called International in earlier OS versions)
The phone you are connecting to also HAS to be in the United States on a service that can access the AIM feature (Not all Carriers do)
I do not have iChat 6 to test an SMS option in Yahoo
I would start by checking the Yahoo web site for any restrictions similar to the AIM one.

  • Ichat Help Needed: Connection Problem

I purchased a new imac about 2 months ago. I have been having problems with my ichat ever since the beginning. When ever I open my ichat to login it says: Lost connection with AIM, the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost, Almost immediately upon login. I have never infact been able to access ichat because I can never login. My internet connection is fine, I have been using the internet with no problems what so ever. I have been using AIM express in the time being and it has worked fine. I have tried updating my software and creating a new AIM screen name but it hasent helped. I would greatly appreciate if someone could tell me how to solve this problem.
    Thank You.
    iMac Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    hi Olivier,
In that case do two things
    1) Download and Instll the Combo version of the Update
    See this list http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/
    2) reboot the Modem and or router.

  • Ichat with linksys Befsr41 problems please help

any help would greatly be appreciated.
    thank you
    John
power mac g5 dual 2 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This chap has emailed me as well
    The answer was:
    Hi John,
If the Motorola is in Bridge mode (passes the public IP to the Linksys) then the Linksys can be left doing DHCP.
The Linksys is going to have to have the port open for iChat and AIM for the PC if that is what you are doing.
This page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/BEFSR41-v3-v4-v5/ iChat.htm tells you how to access the Linksys.
Looking at the pics it has UPnP (Use the one in Administration) This will save you having to open any ports by any other method.
(not to mention that the ports listed for Port Forwarding on this site are wrong in iChat8 as they call it)
UPnP will allow all the Apps on all the computers to pen the ports as they need them. It is just an Enable/ Disable setting in Administration
On the Set Up page you will find the MTU setting. Try setting this to 1492 rather than the default 1500
On the Set Up page you will find the spot to disable DHCP. This will then mean setting Static addresses on the computers.
On the Mac it is done in System Preferences > Network
Go here and then Built-in Ethernet in the second drop down.
    Go to the TCP/IP tab
In here as default, it will be set to Using DHCP and have the other details filled in. Make a note of these before turning Off DHCP in the Linksys
Change the drop down that read Using DHCP to Manual.
You will now have to fill in the text fields.
The computer can be 192.168.1.xxx where xxx is anything between ,2 and 255 (the Linksys itself is .1)
    The Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
The DNS will be whatever you have now.
The "router" is 192.168.1.1 as it is now.
Repeat for other Mac but add a different last number for the IP 192.168.1.3 for example
On the XP machine it is done buy changing the Properties in the Network Connection.
Go to Start > Control Panels
Pick out the Network Services one
Click on the one that is for the LAN network
Right click or use the Properties Button
Change as the mac was done. the last number of the Computer's IP will need to avoid the numbers for the Macs and router.
If the Motorola is in bridge mode it is easy enough to leave the Linksys doing DHCP and UPnP.
    Also
On the Macs make sure System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab has the drop down set to your Connection download speed.
Check in iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down that it is set to NONE.
If it still does not work try this:
Go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Make sure you are logged out of AIM.
Go to the Server Setting tab
Change the 5190 port to 443
These are the most common things to check at your end.

  • Can anyone make sense of this iChat report? Video problems.

    Hi,
Can anyone figure out why it is I cannot connect with anyone using iChat Video? The Text option works like a charm. I have recently moved, same internet provider, etc, upgraded to Leopard as well. Tiger and iChat worked fine.
    Solutions?
    Cheers, SZ

  • IChat video and audio problems Mac to Mac

My associate and I have just set up video chatting with iChat, AIM accounts, and Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro cameras. I have a 12" G4 Powerbook and he has a late-model G5. We are both connecting to internet via Airports, with cable at my end and DSL at his end. After going through many discussion postings, we adjusted our settings so that Quicktime streaming was set to 1.5mbps, log on to AIM was on port 443 rather than 5190, iChat video bandwidth was set to 500, and Internet sharing was off on both machines. We can now see and hear one another, but the sound quality is very poor (we tried Skype, too, and the sound quality is much, much better) and the images we see of one another are very fuzzy and jerky (very slightly better than Skype, and our local images are very sharp and smooth). Worse, the image I see of him disintegrates (pixelates, horizontal lines, etc.) most of the time; he can see some of this on his local image of himself. The disintegration does not occur on Skype. We would rather use iChat, but obviously cannot with these conditions. I have seen no description of anything like this in any of the first 15 or so pages of discussions. Help!

    Hi,
If Quicktime is at 1.5Mbps and you get this try the Bandwidth Setting at NONE.
WE suggest the 500 setting fro a couple of reasons.
Two ISPs, Comcast and Road Runner, practice Data Stream Management to combat File Sharing apps. This reduces the Internet Speed they supply to try and make these applications unworkable.
Unfortunately they can not distinguish between those Apps and iChat in an A/V chat which is also Peer-to-Peer and sending lots of data in both directions.
Other ISPs practice "Fair Usage" Policies and restrict the Bandwidth (And therefore speed) during High Use periods (but never say when those periods are).
The effect is the same as the Comcast/Road Runner issue.
If NONE still does not work try one of the other two setting in-between NONE and 500kbsp.
iChat does use a large amount of processor and Video card time and processing.
It pays to make sure you are not rendering some iMovie item or other high Processor use App.
AS iChat can be effected by Bandwidth issues Sharing the Connection you have with another computer that is downloading or streaming something from the 'Net can be an issue.
It may pay him to look in Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and see what is using the Processor (Set it to All Processes then click the CPU column to re-arrange the list). Anything over about 20% may effect iChat. (vcencoder in lower case is part of iChat)

  • IChat GTalk File Transfer Problems

    Hey guys,
I've noticed that my file transfers keep failing via GTalk. If I drag a picture into the chat window, it looks as though it's going to start sending... but it never does, not network activity at all....
I've found the following two threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1502231
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9449766
But with no real answers.... Anyone able to assist?

    Hi,
I managed to get hold of EZ Jim.
We did some extensive testing from Leopard to Snow Leopard and back and from Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard.
    Results.
    1) Leopard GoogleTalk ID to Snow Leopard GoogleTalk ID did not work (Me to him)
Tried logging out of other Jabber IDs
    2) Leopard Jabber ID to Snow Leopard GoogleTalk ID also did not work.
Logged out of GoogleTalk in iChat and still no luck.
    3) Found I was still logged in to the GoogleMail web page.
No Change on Logging out of Google completely repeated 1) and 2)
We also tried dropping the file on the Buddy's Name in the Buddy List, startng File Sending from the Buddies menu and dropping in a text Chat plus using VIdeo Chat and dropping it on the Box that appears there.
    4) EZ Jim could send me files
    5) Both EZ Jim And I have the Mac Firewall On Normally but turning it off at both end (with tests with only my end set to Allow All) also did not work.
    8) On my Leopard Computer I run Little Snitch.
    This was turned Off completely
    6) Along the way we also deleted, re-added and re-authorised each other.
    7) Changed to Login via my MacBook Pro Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard.
AIM File Sending from my end worked (As a test of file)
GoogleTalk to GoogleTalk IDs did not work from me to him.
Another Jabber ID was tried without improvement.
    8) EZ Jim could still Send me Files and Pic-in-Text chats (Direct IMs)
On My MAcBook Pro and the Jabber Account I have there I could not send files to my GoogleTalk ID which was different to my Leopard computer (This may have been the Server Involved).
    Summary.
Anything over Jabber whatever the ID or starting method did not get to EZ Jim.
    Anything he sent me worked.
As I said My Modem is also my router and is doing UPnP.
I had partial success on the same computer (to myself).
I have yet to find the time to Check Mac to Mac at my end.
I did reboot iChat on my Leopard to make sure it dropped all links to Servers after turning Off the GoogleTalk ID but there was no improvement.
Deleting and re-adding a Buddy and Re-authorising them may prove to have some improvement and would be a first step.
I trust EZ Jim's firewall and/or routing set up is not the cause.
    Tests to do.
Mac to Mac at my end.
Me to EZ Jim from my Google Talk on different day and reboot of computer to clear any network/login issues with Google and/or iChat IDs
What is clear is that it works.
What is not clear is what to do when it does not.
    I will keep you posted.

  • IChat Screen Sharing mouse problems

I just bought a new iMac 20" for my mom for xmas with the thought that the iChat screen sharing will help me to remotely configure her system.
I am finding that once I have initiated the screen share I am have erratic mouse behavior. When I am sharing her screen and moving the mouse the cursor will jump around the screen. this happens even worse if I am click-dragging a window around.
Is there any way to improve this performance? At work I use Windows remote desktop with no issues such as this, and I would expect the same performance from OSX.
    Thanks

My first thought is that your mother is also trying to control the mouse.
I presume though you have exclude this.
iChat Screen Sharing does include an Audio component so the computer is doing an Audio chat at the same time effectively. This will have a impact on the processor usage particularly over the way iChat A/V chats use the processor. (they tend to dip in and out to spread the load and not hog the processor).

  • IChat error number -8, problem isolated to modem

So I've been serially posting, trying to figure this out, but I just went to my local coffee shop to try and figure out if it was my modem that was preventing me from video chatting and lo and behold, it was. I don't, however, know where to go. I'm still at the coffee so I don't know the brand of modem, and if that matters I'll definitely repost, but is there a generic way of reassigning ports (if so, what ports do I reassign and what to?) / knocking down/reconfiguring firewalls on the modem?

AS I have posted before it does tend to be a somewhat Specific area on the modems set up pages.
If the device has UPnP then use that. This will allow the apps to open the ports when it needs them and they close after a timed period of non use.
This is normally and On/Off type setting so no need to enter lots of ports that iChat uses.
In System Preferences > Network you should see a spot called "Router IP"
The first three numbers are likely to be the same as your Own IP on the line below Configure IPv4.
IF this number starts 192.168.x.x or
10.xxx.xxx.xxx or is between 172.16.xxx.xxx and 172.32.xxx.xxx then type that number for the "router" into a web browser (just the numbers and dots).
When you hit enter do you get a pop Up asking for User ID and Password ?
Does it happen to say the name of the device ?
If the Coffee shop is letting you get On-line and Video chatting we don't need to know the modem there.
It is the one at home where things are not working we need to know more about.
