IChat video conferance with people using PCs

If I am using iChat and camcorder with my iBook G4 to video conferance family in Florida who are using a Dell PC with Logitech fusion web cam, what should we use to see each other. AIM, ichat, Yahoo? What program is the most compatible to video confernance between macs and PCs?

Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Diiscussion Pages
iChat will work to AIM 5.9 or Trillian
Both use the same AIM servers that iChat does.
Aim needs some Setting up (Tuning) first and does not do Audio Only and has a very small pic.
Trillian Basic does do Audio Only but the Pro Version ($25) is needed for Video chat
Both need enabling through the XP Service Pack 2 firewall.

  • IChat video conference with PC using AIM

I have successfully connected with my brothers PC and we can see and hear each other using ichat on my side and AIM on his PC. Unfortunately, he only has a one inch by one inch screen the displays the vidio image while I'm enjoyng a full screen using ichat.
Is there anything a PC user can do to increse the size of their video viewing window when using AIM?
    Much appreciated.

You can try trillian pro, which is $25 after the free trial.

  • IChat Video chat with AIM Buddy - Possible fix?

This is my first post to the Apple Discussions group. I received my MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple computer, just two days ago, and came upon this group after discovering the problems establishing a video chat with someone using AIM. With the help of "Rjin WI" I was able to verify that I could indeed have video chat Mac-to-Mac. This morning I decided to try something I should have tried on day one-I fired up AIM 5.9 on my PC, and tried to chat with myself.
I disabled all firewalls involved: the Mac firewall, the Windows SP2 firewall, and the SPI firewall on my Linksys router. I chatted with myself between two screen name for a few moments before initialising the video chat from the Mac, but was quite shocked to see on the PC "Unable to complete the connection with your buddy. This may be due to the configuration of the firewall." On the Mac was "Failed to start Video Chat because: (I) did not respond."
I tried a few more times just to be sure, but the error message was persistent. I kept looking for some button to press or question to answer in the invitation, but there was nothing to be found. Except for the "video" button in the AIM chat I had previously overlooked. I initialised the video chat from AIM, and what do you know, I received the invitation on the Mac, accepted, and was connected just fine.
I reenabled all of the firewalls again. And once again, I was able to have a video chat with myself when I sent the invitation from the PC. Trying from the Mac instantly gave me the error on the PC, and after timing out, the same error on the Mac.
Does anyone else have anything they can add to the mystery of iChat?

    Jason-
great post. i'll try and make my situation short and sweet, as I don't have the energy to try and describe every little "error" that my computer runs into. To make it short; just got the brand new macbook (thinking 'now i can actually video chat, unlike the isight which never worked and solutions/helpful advice via appletechs seemed to be non-existent). Low and behold the camera works perfectly...2x. At the time I was using airport for wireless connection, but I have since been using the computer with a linksys. Because the computer worked with the airport and not with the linksys, I thought this was were the problem existed...then the camera worked with a different user (with the linksys) so I scratched that idea. Anyways I have been trying to video chat with another macbook and there is no success whatsoever. We both get the msg " did not respond) when the user accepts, the camera icon goes "shaded" but then goes back to its normal state. Both firewalls were disabled, and both of us are using linksys. I also run vonage in my place if that could somehow play into this scenario. I apologize for such a poor post, but my energy regarding this matter is limited since I am so tired of trying get this video chat working. (first a worthless isight, then a macbook which can't even function with another macbook. in addition, to put it lightly, i am very dissatisfied with applecare regarding this issue.)

  • What type of video camera do people use to edit professionally these days?

I use to own a Mini DVC camcorder that I would edit video with in Final Cut Pro. Now since my Mini DVC camcorder broke I'm shopping for a new video camera but found myself really confused on what I need to buy for a good professional video camera at this point. It seems like DVC camcorders have been turned obsolete and now my options is a camcorder with a hard drive or a sd card in it, unless there are other options I'm not seeing at the local best buy.
I'm a little hesitant with the SD and hard drive cameras just for the fact that I would think they would be compression the video when saving it to these new formats, and I also don't know what compression scheme there using. With a DVC all I had to do is shoot the video and then hook it up to my computer via firewire and capture it, this would allow me to compress the video while I was capturing it.
With these new cameras I have no clue on what compression scheme they use and if there even a good option for good professional video editing. I'm not looking to spend to much money, I was hoping I could get something between $200 - $400 tops, but I wouldn't spend this type of money till someone gave me a little advice on what format is right to use with computer video editing these days.
Any advice or recommendations would be very appreciated. If the price is right I would take standard definition (just for the fact that my Mac is a G4 and I don't really think it can do HD video that well), but if I could have an option to later shoot in HD that would be very helpful to.

With a DVC all I had to do is shoot the video and then hook it up to my computer via firewire and capture it, this would allow me to compress the video while I was capturing it.
DV video, recorded onto DVC (Digital Video Cassette) tapes, would NOT be compressed during capture. DV, DVCam and DVCPro (all varieties of the DV25 codec) is compressed 5:1 when recorded to tape. When you capture, all that happens is a straight digital transfer of 1s and 0s from the tape to your computer. No further compression was taking place.
What type of video camera do people use to edit professionally these days?
All types. Everything from Flip cameras to HDCam SR.
I'm a little hesitant with the SD and hard drive cameras just for the fact that I would think they would be compression the video when saving it to these new formats
You'd better get over that ... tape-based recording is going the way of the audio cassette.
I also don't know what compression scheme there using
Now you've hit upon what I consider to be the main problem with non-tape cameras; many manufacturers have taken to using codecs that were originally designed for final delivery, like H.264. So they need to be converted to an editable format PRIOR to editing. That's probably the reason that Apple developed the ProRes family of codecs. It's definitely a change in workflow. The other real issue I have with non-tape recording is the lack of a decent archive method. With tape you had a built-in archive medium; the tape itself. But with the new card-based recording, your archive options are limited and more expensive than tape.
    If the price is right
And what price would that be? What's your budget?

  • I cant have a video chat with people without macs?! why?

i can have a video chat with anyone with a mac, but weneveri try to conenct to anyone else with a web cam it says there is a conenction problem. whats wrong? the version of i chat that i have is ichat av 3.1.8. please help! what do i do?

The problem is that there is no standard for audio/video that everyone uses.
Each IM provider has decided to use their own method of doing it, and they're all incompatible with each other.
It's possible to use iChat on Mac OS X to do an audio/video chat with someone using Windows, but only if that person is using the AIM protocol in either the AIM client or Trillian Pro.
The method that is generally recommended here for cross-platform audio/video chat is Skype. I don't like recommending them because of their misleading practices, closed proprietary protocols, and the fact that they treat Mac users as second-class citizens (and Linux users even worse), but for the moment they are probably your best bet.
WWDC is in a month, so after that we'll know whether Apple has added additional protocols or changed their methods for doing audio/video in Leopard's version of iChat. Personally i'm hoping for full support for both Jingle and SIP (open) standards, which will allow communication with Google Talk users on Windows and VoIP (soft)phones on every platform.

  • How to chat with people use AIM?

    i am use I-chat 4.0 ,mac OSx10.5.1
how can u chat with people use AIM?
he use can chat with people who is .mac or .aim.

    Hi
For a Mac person just starting out on iChat, a good place to start is here:
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page2.html
If AIM is being used by a Windows PC user then setting up as per http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service is required.

  • Using the iChat video conferencing with a PC user

I have been trying to use the iChat AV with a PC user who is on AIM. Is this not possible? Even a one-way chat?

Unfortunately this is the only way I use iChat... I can't convince my relatives to make the apple jump. It will not work one-way, only if both sides have video. When it does work it works ok, but the windows side generally has all kinds of configuration issues (like personal firewall problems). It also isn't that great of an experience on the windows side, but that is just my opinion after using hte mac side.
There are some really good folks in the ichat forum with a LOT of great information on how to get this working correctly. But for the most part the problem is going to be on the other (pc) end. The one other person I do video chat with is a mac user in New Zealand and I am in the US - when we connect I never have a problem...
    Good luck!

  • Can I use iChat to chat with people on other platforms, e.g. yahoo etc?

    Dear all
Can I use iChat to chat to people on other platforms e.g. yahoo, aol, gmail, jabber etc? For example, I have just managed to sign into iChat with Gmail (had to resort to this because iChat won't let me log-on with my Mobile Me name), but now it seems iChat will only let me add other Gmail users?  Surely there is a way to log in with Gmail but chat with people on other platforms?
Any help would be most appreciated.

    Hi,
Since iChat 4 you have been able to log in to as many AIM or Jabber IDs as you have set up.
In Lion (iChat 6) they become a combined Buddy list.

  • I want to video chat with people on Facebook or MSN who are not using an apple device.

I Have been trying to video chat with friends and family using my ipad 3 but they do not have apple devices.
WHat does anyone suggest for an app to link to my Facebook and/ or msn account in order to be able to video chat with them?

It sounds like Skype would do well.  It has no direct connection to Facebook or MSN, but that's OK ... as long as they use Skype as well.
Skype is now a Microsoft product, so it's related to MSN in some sense.

  • IChat cannot communicate with iMessages using Bonjour.

We are trying to setup an iChat system in our office, but having trouble with compatibility between iChat and iMessages, specifically when using Bonjour. A Bonjour List can open and shows buddies, but when we try to chat between computers running 10.8 and above and those running 10.75 and below, it won't work. Please advise.

    Hi,
    This was using Bonjour.
I have used AIM and Jabber accounts across them as well in separate tests.
I am the Admin on all three computers.
when I set them up I used "Ralph Johns" as the User name.
As a consequence all three were names as "Ralph Johnss Computer" when looking in System Preferences > Sharing.  (yes certain OS versions do silly things with names that end in s)
Sine ce then I have made sure they have different names so that they appear in the Shares in the finder.
The G4 tower is in fact "Ralph G4", the iMac is "Ralph's iMac" and the MacBook Pro is "Ralph's MacBook Pro" which also distinguishes it from my son's MacBook Pro ("xxxxxxxx's MacBook Pro").
That is to say that each computer has it's Own Name to use with Bonjour as well as it User logged in to the Mac having his or her own My Card in the Address book or Contacts app.
As I said (well I hinted really) I have also tested in Tiger (the G4 used to have multiple boots up until recently.)
Although Text Chatting is fine  Video and Audio chats are more difficult.
In the testing I did do before the drive failed I always had to Video Chat Calling from the Tiger end (G4)
I have seen people report issues when using an Address Book held on a Server where the My Card is then generic.
I do not know enough about Server sets up s to help resolve that.

  • IChat video problems with Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO

I have spent the last week reading numerous threads re: issues with video conferencing and Netgear "MIMO" routers. I believe I have tried every possible suggestion from the available discussions, still to no avail.
Specifically, I am trying to video conference with my brother, who also has the same Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO router, by the way. I have a Macbook Pro and he has a brand new Macbook. I have cable broadband w/ Adelphia/Time Warner connected to Motorola Surfboard modem -- to Netgear wireless router -- to Macbook Pro. He has cable broadband w/ Adelphia/Time Warner connected to RCA broadband modem -- to Netgear wireless router -- to Macbook.
Current settings for both of us are as such: iChat port set to 443, UPnP is on, SPI firewall is off, Quicktime streaming set to 1.5 Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN, video bandwidth limit is set to "None", "Block UDP traffic" is off. Have tried with apple firewall off and on.
Due to all the previous threads, I am assuming the problem is with the Netgear RangeMax MIMO routers.
    Q:
    1. Does anyone have any further suggestions/comments on getting around this issue?? I would certainly appreciate any help as we would both prefer to use iChat rather than Skype, which we have been using with no problems.
    2. Should we give up on the Netgear RangeMax routers, or are there people out there who have been able to successfully use this specific wireless router to video chat with iChat??

  • Cannot video chat with someone using AIM software

I tried to video chat with someone who was using the downloadable AIM software, and when they initiated the chat, nothing came up saying a video chat was requested, and when i tried to initiate it, a notification came up for them, they accepted, but nothing happened, video chat did not initiate, and on the top of my video chat screen it still said "waiting for response from ...". Anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it?

    Hey All,
I got the following message when trying to connect to people using AOL messenger:
There was a communications error during your chat, iChat encountered errors while communicating with participants in this chat
I am using G5 (latest version) and iChat latest version. What is wrong> Please can someone help at all?

    Hi Gary:
Using the latest version of AIM won't work. The PC user MUST be using AIM 5.9 or before or Trillian.
Have you tried connected to the PC AIM Bot listed here: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html (It's my PC auto responder). If you can connect, then it's probably the windows user configuration with the firewall that is preventing you from connecting.
