IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

    Hi RonWM,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article lists the ports that are used by the Apple TV:

  • Please help with iChat Video connection problem

    Hi,
I'm having problems getting iChat video to connect with other users. Is there anyone here who can interpret the log for me to diagnose the problem?
I'm using iChat 4.0.2 (604) on OSX 10.5.2. I'm able to make a test call to the appleu3test01 account but not to anyone else. My computer is behind a firewall/nat that allows all outgoing connections.
    Thanks in advance,
    Charley

  • IChat video chat issues

iChat has been acting up recently. I have an iSight, the person I want to talk with has a Veo USB webcam. They are on a Windows XP computer using AIM 5.9, I am on a Mac OSX 10.4.5 using iChat 3.1.1. All my ports are forwarded, I have no firewall on, nor does he. Sometimes it will work. Once we got it to work so that I could see and hear him, and he could see and hear me. Lately though, it's been me seeing him, not hearing him, but he can see and hear me. Then it let me see him for a second, then it freezes, but he can see and hear me. I never have audio from the start from him. Somewhere in between there it will load to the point where I can see myself in the window but not him. Usually he can only see and hear me and I can't hear him, but once I could hear him. This is getting confusing and aggrivating. We both have the newest version of everything, and I have gone to every troubleshooter everywhere. What's up here?
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Michael,
IF you can connect, but his audio is missing there is a setting on his end that can sometimes help.
    Start a Chat.
You open the Connection Doctor from the iChat Video menu
He clicks on the rear of the two tabs where he sees your Video. This should be his preview.
When his preview is at the front there should be a small icon to the right.
If he clicks on that a slider will come up.
Sliding the slider to the left does in fact reduce the quality. (not that you can tell visually)
In the Connection Doctor you should see his bit rate and Framerate increase.
If there is enough adjustment of the Video quality the sound should kick in.
Adjust as required to achieve acceptable Video and Sound.

  • 8 Series Samsung video connection issues

I have recently purchased a Samsung 8 series TV and finding difficulties with video connection on my Skype account. There is no video at all during a call, but the people I am in contact with use video connection successfully on their accounts with other people. Any ideas? Please!

Does she have a good working internet connection?
    Have her try to connect to a video test;
    appleu3test01 AIM
    appleu3test02 AIM
    appleu3test03 AIM
You might have been connected by Bonjour at your hame.
Make sure you both configure an iChat account, either by a mac or AIM screen name.

  • IChat Video connection fails because I did not respond?

    Hello everyone,
Before I get 10 post telling me this is already out there I wanted to add something new.
I've read all the NAT issues, opening ports up, UDP on or off,DMZ and router ports and tried everything suggested and I still cannot connect without this annoying error.
Here it the strange part....I can video chat with a PC person with an AIM account fine, no problems, no error messages. It's only when I try a mac user to mac user that I get this message. It worked perfect until Saturday afternoon and has not worked since with mac users. I can text chat, audio chat but video will not work. I've spoken with other mac friends who are experincing the same thing.
We are all on different ISP for the record.
Is Apple having server problems? Is this 10.4.6?
Thank you in advance for helpful suggestions.
    G5/Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

To all who are having the "I did not respond" error and have a Linksys or other router (tested on Linksys only):
In the router control panel administration tab, enable the UPnP: to ENABLE and save the settings. This solved the problem for me and now iChat works perfectly again for me and mmy dad overseas (tested on linksys only) and may for you as well. Make sure the other party on the other end has done the same. Hope this helps and please email me if this works for you too.
    Take care! [email protected]

  • Ichat video connection not working

    Hey guys how are you?
The thing is that I have two Brand new 15" macbook pro and i'm trying to use them both with ichat, but the problem is that i can get connected but i cannot star a video chat, first computer stays in waiting for response and second computer never gets any alert or anything that says that there is a video chat coming so if some of you can help me with this little problem would be very nice.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • IChat video and audio not working (yep, me too). Help? Help!? etc. :)

I'm not here to start a rant about Apple or iChat AV. Before 10.4.4, my mate and I had some great chats on iChat AV. He had a cam attached to his Mac and I could see the video absolutely fine. We used to do audio chat, too. It worked fine.
Now we're both on 10.4.4 and I've got a built-in iSight on my new iMac. Obviously, I want to try out some 2-way video now. It won't work for me, though.
We can text chat, we can send files. We can't use audio chat anymore and neither can we use video. It's the old 'did not respond' problem.
Nothing has changed in my setup, connection-wise. I've got a healthy broadband connection which is connected to a BT Voyager 250 modem. Connected to this, via ethernet, is my Airport Express.
I've tried eliminating the Airport Express from the setup, but it makes no difference in this case.
I don't really know a lot about port forwarding and telnet sessions, so... be gentle. Hopefully someone here can help get it working.
    Many thanks,
    B

  • Cisco ASA 5505 VPN connection issue ("Unable to add route")

I'm trying to get IPSec VPN working onto a new Cisco ASA5505. Pretty standard configuration.
    Setup:
    * Cisco VPN client on Windows 7 (v5.0.07.0290 x64 on Laptop1 and v5.0.07.0440 x64 on Laptop2)
    * PPPoE/NAT and internal DHCP on the ASA were configured with the Startup Wizard in ASDM
NATting is working fine - internal PCs get an IP address in the 192.168.2.0/24 range and can all access the Internet.
I wanted to be able to connect from anywhere to the ASA in order to reach one of the internal servers. Should be pretty basic.
First I tried with the built-in ASDM IPSec Wizard, instructions found here.
VPN clients can connect to the ASA, are connected (until they're manually disconnected), but cannot reach the internal network nor the Internet. Note VPN client can connect fine to a different VPN site (not administered by myself).
Client logs show following error messages:

I've already tried the suggestions from this link, although the problem is different there (as the user can still access the internet, even without split tunneling, which I cannot).
A show run shows the following output (note in the below I have tried a different VPN network: 192.168.3.0/24 instead of 172.16.1.0/24 seen in the Client log)

Unfortunately I'm getting the same "AddRoute failed to add a route with metric of 0: code 160" error message.
I'm very confused as this should be a pretty standard setup. I tried to follow the instructions on the Cisco site to the letter...
The only "differences" in my setup are an internal network of 192.168.2.0 (with ASA IP address 192.168.2.254) and PPPoE with DHCP instead of no PPPoE at all.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Yes, I have tried from a different laptop - same results. Using that laptop I can connect to a different IPSec site without issues.

  • MPEG Video Import Issues (Not Trial)

    Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new to PP CS3. Up until recently I have been using basic Video Editing tools. I have decided since I like video editing so much, that I am going to try and go into it full force. So I bought my friends copy of CS3 Master suite off of him (because his company bought him two licenses and he only needs one so I got it cheap) and away I go.
So, with that in mind. Please be patient if I sound like noob because I am. I am a system admin, but when it comes to this stuff, I know very little compared to most of you I am sure.
Right now I am just doing something really basic to get my feet wet. I have imported a bunch of Kids shows I recorded using my Media Center PC and want to make a compilation of just the musical scenes for my little girl. I have done this type of stuff with Pinnacle in the past but I seem to running into a weird issue.
The video's are a standard MPEG 2 DVD compliant format. The capture card I use is a Hauppauge PVR 150 so it does the hardware encoding on the board.
If I watch these files on my TV or in Media Player Classic/WMP/VLC they all look fine. The minute I view them in PP CS3 they get this weird distortion. It looks like digital artifacts from say a bad digital cable stream, except it is all colorful and such. Dare I say the "Technicolor rainbow" :)
I thought at first that maybe it was just because the preview is a lower quality. So I did a small amount of editing and exported the video. After watching the exported video, the weird distortion IS there. So I am not sure what to do about this. I did see one post on the forums that suggested simply changing the file extension to AVI might help. I did this and odly enough, it did fix the video issue, but then the sound was completely out of synch.
I have looked around the forums and seem some references to MPEG file issues but none seem to describe the issue I am having and most seemed related to trial versions of the software not having the MPEG codec licensed. That would not be my situation.
Just as a last note. I know that MPEG files are highly compressed and are usually and especially in the case of DVD's the final product not meant for further editing. However, in this case I am just cutting sections out so I didn't think there would be an issue. Also, as I mentioned above, I have done this without issue on Pinnacle.
If anyone has any suggestions. I would appreciate it.
    Thanks again.

    Kyle,
It sounds like it could be a CODEC issue. I'd start by getting a bit of freeware, G-Spot, http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and installing it. Run your MPEG-2 in G-Spot and see what it says about it. Your capture card could be doing the compression in a CODEC that PP does not work nicely with, or that it does not/can not access on your system. G-Spot will give you the CODEC used/required. Also, it will render the file with just a few mouse clicks and you can view it, with audio, in G-Spots viewer. How does it look there, just like in WMP?
I assume that you are doing all of the work on the same computer, right? If so, any CODEC available to WMP (and G-Spot) *should* be accessible to PP.
Actually doing a "conversion" to AVI would be better than just chaning the extension of the file. The Premiere-pedia has a full set of FAQs on file conversions. Eddie Lotter, the "gate-keeper" of the pedia offers this link:
    http://premierepro.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ%3aHow_do_I_import_%E2%80%9Cxyz%E2%80%9D_format_files %3F
Hope that the forum does not truncate the URL.
As for sync issues, if the Audio & Video are out of sync by a constant amount, you can alt-click on the Audio and adjust it, until the sync comes in. You will want to Zoom the Timeline and also turn off the "Snap" feature, when you begin adjusting the sync. Find a point that is pretty obvious, like a sound that has a distinct visual associated with it. Dialog can be used, if the visual is shot tight enough to see the actor's lips. Do this BEFORE you do any cutting of the Clip. Once you have matched the sync, then you can cut and all should stay the same. However you should not have to do this, if your file is something that PP can play with. PP likes DV-AVI footage, that one shoots with a DV tape camera best, but should work with what you have, to a lesser degree.
Doing VHS captures to PP on my system (Turtle Beach A-D card) yields an 8 frame sync issue, that I have never cleared up. However, with the above syncing technique, it edits fine. These captures are done AVI uncompressed, but the sync problem exists with all of the possible formats from the TB card. Some day, I need to address this problem, rather than just do the workaround.
As for the exact distortion, that you describe, I have not seen that, but maybe others have and can tell you that I'm full-of-it, but give you a fix. Hey, that's all that's important, right? Believe them.
You might want to go up a level in the hierarchy of this forum (to get ALL versions of Premiere) and do a search for "MPEG + distortion," and similar, to see if someone else has had this problem. The Premiere-pedia is another good source of info too, though its "search" is not as good. I often find that Google does a better job, searching the P-pedia. Premiere-pedia:

  • Internet connectivity issues with SA 520W router

    Hi,
We have configured Cisco Small Business Pro (SA 520W) in a small office and all computers are connected with wifi. We are facing following problems:
    1. Computer is connected with network and 100% signals available but there is no internet. After repairing network from computer or sometimes rebooting computer fix the this problem. What cause internet connectivity problem?
    2. Sometimes computer is connected with internet and everything work fine but suddenly there is no internet. May be internet come back again after 2 minutes etc. Strange behavior.
    3. Sometime there is no internet connection even after trying all possible tuneing but internet connection become alive again if we reboot router.
All these problems appear randomly on different computers. Can anyone tell what's the reason of all these problems and how can fix it?
    Thanks.
    Sajjad

I have the just similar problem since few days , for long time I have no issues with wireless router
I have five static IP addresses I am using 1 static IP for the Router and other for the internal use
I though it was my inter provider technical issue,
The internet is working through provider gateway router but not through a Cisco SA520W
some times it works some time it wont resolve host name, internal LAN works perfect ,but internet drops packets and it is very slow
If  we dynamically setup the router, it  works but not for the static IP address
my old configuration is not saved , reset to factory defaults even then it did not work
I do have 24 port cisco switch when I login there is no gui console just blank blue screen with text boxes
    I appreciate some can guide.
I believe we need the update firmware on both devices .I appreciate for the help
    Thanks

  • AIM to iChat video connection failing

my boyfriend and i have been trying for a few days to connect to a video chat. i have windows XP Pro with AIM 6.5 and he has a macbook with iChat.
up until just a few minutes ago, we couldn't get either computer to accept an invite to a video chat. it would boot us immediately. i changed some firewall settings like i'd read and it tried to connect but still nothing.
then i got more firewall change suggestions [all from the forums] and we made progress. when we start a video chat, i can see myself as a PIP and he can see himself the same.
    but still no video chat.
the firewall settings i changed were the UPnP as an Exception. then i edited the 2 things in the UPnP to accept All computers. those were the first revisons.
then i added AIM6.exe to the exceptions and that got us to the PIP view we both have now.
can anyone help? i suppose the problem is on my end. he has changed his bandwidth limit to none.
he also tried on AIM on his Tangent laptop, and we had the same results. so i'm assuming the problem is on my end. i have my AIM preferences set for my specific camera and mic and speakers.
is there anything else i need to do??

    Ok,
AIM (in any version) uses port 1024-5000 to do video chats (It uses 4 ports like iChat at any one time in a one-to-one connection).
These have to allowed in the routing device as well as the XP or Vista firewall.
If the Computer Firewall has UPnP also Enabled then the routing device can use UPnP if it has it.
This will will mean logging on to the routing device in web browser and looking at the settings. (They are on a series of web pages held on the device as an interface for changing the settings)
This site http://portforward.com/routers.htm list many devices.
Click on your if it is there.
Clcik on AIM Video in the next page.
The next page will show you 1) the defaults to access the device (THE BIT YOU NEED)
It will also show 2) the way to Port FOrward. (You will only need this if you don't have UPnP on the device)
UPnP allows the Apps on each computer to open portss. It also allows multiple computers to use the same ports and therefore is preferable over Port Forwarding which only allows one IP(Computer) to use the ports
The link above will only tell you the Defaults for logging on to the device.
If the owner has changed the Password or User ID or even the IP then you will be stuck without their help.

  • Camcorder connection issues (not the simple type)

Note: Also posted in OS and Hardware forums
I have a Panasonic PV-GS400 camcorder that my Mac Pro refuses to recognize. First a list of what I have confirmed.
    1) There is nothing wrong with the camcorder (It will work with an iMac at my work running Leopard)
    2) There is nothing wrong with the cable I am using (Connected a friend's cam corder using it)
    3) There is nothing wrong with my firewire (I have a LaCie drive and have been able to interface to a different camcorder)
    4) I have reinstalled quicktime w/o fixing the problem.
    5) I installed my orig Tiger OS on my firewire drive and still see the same problem.
    6) Both iMovieHD and FinalCut fail to recognize the camcorder.
    7) All of my software and firmware is up to date.
    8) I have confirmed all settings on my camcorder (It worked with another mac)
Now for the information regarding my mac:
    2x3GHz Dual Core Xeon
    OS X 10.4.11
    Model MacPro1,1
    Rom Version MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version 1.7f10 (Don't know what this is)
I appreciate any suggestions, there are only 2 things left to try (as far as I can see)
    1) New OS
    2) Try a Firewire 800 cable
I have searched the net quite a bit over this issue and I feel I have done my homework with no success. I have also heard some disturbing comments / BS regarding certain camcorders "just not working" with certain Mac / PCs. Is this really true?
    Again thanks for any thoughts.

I thought this initially myself, but when I had the other camcorder working with my mac I went through the following steps
    1) Use Canon Camorder (iMovie works, I can see the camera in the profiler)
    2) Plug in the GS400 and nothing happens (Can't see it in the profiler)
    3) Use Canon Camcorder again to make sure my cam is not killing the firewire and everything works as in step 1.
Thank you very much for the suggestion, I also tried a 30 min reset a couple of days ago and no difference.
Do you know if there are any firewire utilities for looking at plug in events and such?

  • Two issues not related about OSX.6.7 on MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz 17", 8 GB RAM

    Issue number one:
Just purchased (Feb22 2011) a MacBook 17" Pro 2.8 Ghz i7 Processor, 8 GB system RAM, 500 GB SATA Hard Drive. It was Replacement for a PowerBook 17".
I'm finding the keyboard on my new computer, not nearly as responsive as on my old PowerBook.
One thing it appears that the keyboard on my new computer is same type of keypad as a TV remote where they have a rubber membrane that have little pencil led carbon dots applied. If so it will be worn out within a Year or need to be taken apart and the board cleaned as long as the button. Most Remotes are worn out and need repairs or replacement within a year to 18 months. whereas my old computer has a real mechanical key switch type keyboard.
I am finding that that Ican actually type faster than the keyboard can keep up with and cause no end of editing for misspellings.
Second Issue: When on the Internet I notice that connection takes forever to respond.
I use several DNS number parts That I switch out, one from my ISP. One Pair from "OpenDNS" and one set from Google DNS. I notice when get in this rut of taking forever to respond. IF I quit and switch DNS settings Then restart. Everything Flies.
Doesn't make a difference what Browser or Email Client I use. IT act like there is a Kick Start when I do this.
Browsers and Email Clients I use:
    SeaMonkey
    FireFox
    Camino
    Safari
    Postbox
    Opera
    OmniWeb
    iCab
Seems like some cache file get to a limit then fails at a certain point.and when you switch DNS number pair it kicks out that old cacahe and starts over.
Any suggestions on either or both Problems.

Have you changed your Apple Menu - System Preferences - Keyboard & Mouse settings?

  • Downloads hesitate, not related to router or provider

My iTunes downloads (of podcasts) used to be really fast. Now I see that they load for 2 secs then wait for ten or so. The download time is huge now. I tried this at another house in another state with a different type of connection and provider, and it's the same thing. It never did this before. Now what used to be a 5 minute download is an hour. Did Apple add a setting that tells it not to hog all the bandwidth? This is a real pain in the neck.

Since you are no computer expert I thought I would enlightn you a little. Its virtually impossible for apple to know every PC configuration out there and test for it. So once in a while a software conflict happens. I used to use Norton several years ago but it was causing all kinds of conflicts, so I switched to McAfee and no problems since. However I always try to minimize the amount of applications running in my system tray (by your clock on the task bar) Its not that the virus programs block new applications on purpose. Sometimes when upgrading to a new version of a application, you have to reset the rules in your firewall/virus.
You said its obvious its a apple bug. How do you know for sure? Did you install itunes on a clean machine with nothing else on it except for XP and drivers? Please keep in mind this is a user forum and people come here for help, which is why you see more posts on that subject. Would you expect people with no problems using itunes to post here, "My itunes is working great" No you woudn't. Also keep in mind the thousands of people who did download it and aren't having any trouble.
This last upgrade, in order to download the new itunes I had to turn off my popup blocker which in the past I didn't. If you want to post the problem you are having with any reproduce steps and the exact error messages you are getting I'd be happy to help unless of course you just wanted to rant.
