IChat video impossible yet Skype Video possible

It has been quite some time since I was able to have a video chat with iChat/iSight . With the new Skype Video Beta I have good video conferencing . At least I now know it is not a bandwidth problem . But why does iChat Video prove totally impossible ( text is fine , audio is mediocre ) whilst Skype works fine . Any help or advice greatly appreciated .
iMac G5 2.1 GHz 2.5 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi again , I'll try and be as complete as I can .Following the order of your questions:
iMac G5 2.1 GHz 2.5 GB 10.4.8
Firewall is on ( always on)
Only ran Tiger - unsure about iChat 2 - Mac is less than 1 year old .
No changes to the firewall - only occasional changes when activing appletalk or filesharing or similar
No modem , only router ZyXEL P660 HW-61
Wireless ( printer wireless - iTunes to Hi-Fi wireless )
The router is the DHCP server ( I think ) ...
Ports - I need guidance please
Set-up : Router , wireless to G5 Mac and also occasionally to 17" PB and other visiting Macs , to Printer , to Airport Express for iTunes to Hi-Fi
Can't figure what has changed . Regular Mac updates whenever available.
Occasional temporaray airport connection problems - router to mac when rebooting .
As it so happens since I posted , the inbuilt iSight camera is no longer recognized ! Message says no camera attached or in use by another application .I checked previous posts . I have the Apple_iSight file , have run disk repair from Install disk , have uninstalled Skype . When I connect an external iSight camera , it works ( the video image ) .
Continuing to be grateful for your help.

  • How do I reinstall iChat, how do PC users video iChat with me, and should I just use skype?

    1. I deleted iChat awhile ago by mistake. I searched ichat in Macintosh HD, and the only result was iChat the application file, but its icon is a faded out IWeb icon. When I click on it, it just bounces on my dock, until it disappears and an error message pops up stating it quit unexpectedly. I tried dragging the result to my desktop then redragging it into my Applications folder, but the same thing still happens (faded out iWeb icon instead of iChat icon, bounces, quits, error message). I also tried installing the iChat AV (forgot which version) and iChat Update 1.0 Universal, both of which said I had to have 10.4. I have 10.5.8. Also, if this makes any difference, the current faded out iChat in my Applications folder says its version 4.0.9. I do not have my reinstall CD, and do not want to call support and have them send me one. Considering I bought my macbook in late 2008, and my warranty is up, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't help me anyways. I also do not know of anyone who has a mac so the sharing option can be crossed offed. Is there a downloadable version of iChat for 10.5. users?
    2. If I somehow managed to reinstall a working iChat, how would PC users connect to me and vide chat?
    3. Should I just use skype? Would i have to download anything? Is skype video chat free? What are the differences between iChat and skype, and which one is better?
    Thank you for your time!

    Hi,
    Reinstall Instructions
Be SURE to Download (Manually) and Install the COMBO version of the last Update to the OS you did as iChat will need to be Updated (Software Update will think it is already done and you need to Fool it)
    Re 2).
In theory it is just a question oif you using a valid AIM name in iChat
This could be one registered with AIM or one from @mac.com or MobileMe if paid for or a current trial.
In Practice it can need a bit of tweaking at both ends
They Need to allow the AIM App through the Windows firewall as an Exception (AS with any Non Microsoft app)
They may also need to turn off the "Real Time" option that does not work to iChat and effects A/V chats as well.  (It is Sending as you type). It will be in one of the Menus of their Budy List.
Post back for more if you get stuck.
    Re 3)
Skype does offer free Video Chat and some people resort to it when iChat to AIM does not work.
It is free (At present - and you only pay for the Connection to and from real phones)
Skype was bought by Microsoft within the last week and things may change at some point in the future.
    iChat has better Video
Audio depends on the capabilities of your Mac and their PC but is probably about equal.
Connection methods differ and iChat's Video and Audio Chats are technically more secure (you can in fact log out of the Buddy List as they adre Peer-to-Peer where as Skype uses a little bit of everyone's bandwidth (Between 40 and 100 other End Users)
    Other options are here
Video options are from 8 onwards
Mebeam is now called Koowy. (Video Chatting in a Web Browser using Flash)
    NOTES;
Google Do a Plug-in for Intels to allow you to use their Web Mail Page Chat Option
It can Conflict with Flash if you use more than one option.

I guess not many people have tried this since the PR 1.2 release. Dont see any posts so far on people confirming it?

So the image appears hazy and kind of with broken pixels ? as it appears in an average webcam !

You are mistaken, Jim. Have had no luck getting that program to work on my computer. I did manage to get macam to work with my old camera for use as a webcam with quicktime and Skype so that will have to do with that for now.
    You are mistaken, David.
The Panther versions of iChat can work with
many USB webcams when used in conjunction with iChatUSBC

    As shown in the "Compatibility/System
Requirements:" at the top of the iChatUSBCam installation page, iChatUSBCam works with
    "iChat AV 2.0 or higher".
iChat AV 2.0 and iChat AV 2.1 both run in the
Panther OS, and both are supported.
You do not need to take my word, or that of the

  • Logitech C920 and Skype Video Calls

So, the Logitech C920 I have worked before with Skype video calls with no problems. But after this new update, it doesn't detect the web cam anymore. I've googled, searched this forum, searched reddit and every possible form of help to only still not detect the web cam.
I've used 6.22, 6.18,  and right now I'm on 6.14 and it still won't be detected. I've tried every USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 port I have on my rig.
Now before someone tells me it's the web cam that's broken, the web cam works on Logitech's program, it works on twitch, it works on Microsoft's program as well. All drivers are up-to-date as well.
Completely frustrated with this problem and I was wondering if posting it would be of any help.
I am on Windows  8.1 Pro 64-bit as well.
    Solved!

    Hi,
Im having a similar issue. Logitech c920 no picture in SKYPE. Other apps are OK and SKYPE titles my webcam but it just a blank screen with spinning wheel in setting. Sound is OK.
Im running Windows 7 64bit. I have uninstalled SKYPE and updated the drivers ( AMD Catalyst to 14.2 and also tested beta 15.4 ) with no change.
    Any help would be appreciated

  • Skype video calling for iphone 3g

I don't see the new update for skype in the app store and the options just say call? How can i enable video call? Is it possible for the iphone 3g

Skype v3.0 has video calling for iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G and iPhone 3GS only.
    http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/download/iphone-for-sky pe/
As the iPhone 3Gs does not have a front facing camera, the person you are calling will only be able to see the view from the rear camera.

  • Does anyone know how I can get skype (video call) to work on Ipad 3rd generation

I have tried to make a video call through Skype to a business relation (who did not have the possibility to use Facetime) on Ipad 3rd Generation. Did this using the most recent Skype app (which claims to have been updated for the Retina display). The app works all rigt, but the video doesn't. That is: I can see myself, but the other person can't. And I cannot see the other person. What have I done wrong?
    Regards, Koos Woltjes, Netherlands.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

  • Recording a Skype video chat?

I have an iMac with built-in iSight and I want to record a Mac-to-PC video chat through Skype.
Does anyone know how I can do this with Skype? iChat to AIM/PC has been very lame. So I use Skype.
Is there a third party program that makes this video chat into an .mov?
    Thanks,

  • Can I record Skype video feed using iSight camera?

I have tried to use the iMovie application to record video sessions via Skype but I am not sure if this is possible. The Help instruction tsay to click the mode switch to set iMovie to built-in camera mode but i do not see this function. Does this mean I do not have the correct version of iMovie or that my computer is not compatible for this function?

You cannot use your built-in iSight for video in two applications (Skype and iMovie) at the same time.
I do not see any built-in ability to record video calls in Skype's video features page:
      http://tinyurl.com/239gqgf
The easiest way for you to record Skype video is to add http://ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/
You will find many other possibilities if you search the web for "+how to record Skype video call?+" (without the quotation marks.) You may find many other perfectly acceptable alternatives, but I have always had good results with ecamm products and can recommend them in good conscience.
If you are determined to use iMovie, I can suggest two ways to record a Skype video call using iMovie:
    (1) Run Skype on one Mac
      • Run iMovie on a second Mac pointing at the first Mac's display.
    (2) Connect an external webcam to your Mac. (With more than one camera, iMovie will show both.)
      • Launch iMovie and select the external cam as the video recording source.
      • Point the external cam at your Mac's display.
      • Launch Skype and verify that your built-in iSight is the cam that Skype will use.
      • Start your Skype call and set the window size, brightness, and location.
      • Adjust the iMovie cam to show the part of your display you want to record and start recording.
Call Recorder seems a much better ways to record your Skype videos than either of these.
*For Snow Leopard users wanting to record Skype video*: you can record your entire display regardless of what app is running by using the QuickTimeX (version 10.x) that is bundled with Mac OS X 10.6.x. (10.5.8's QuickTime does not offer this screen recording feature.) QTX records only the full screen, so a product like Call Recorder may still be of interest to SL users who want to record less than full screen calls.

  • SKYPE VIDEO APP THAT USES 3G AND WIFI

I would like to know if Verizon will now allow (as AT&T does) a Skype app that will use 3g and Wifi to make regular and video calls bypassing Verizon's network.  As I understand it, it just uses the 3g data or Wifi data (internet) network.  If Verizon wants to be competitive, they need to do this soon!  And with their 4g system coming, it should be even more possible.  Any ideas to get Verizon's attention?

Don't confuse this with Skype on vzw phones.  This is SKYPE VIDEO that you are referring to.
AT&T currently only allows video to video chat over wifi, they are going to allow it over 3G now.  The main downside is AT&T's network couldn't handle video to video over 3G during their own testing of their Facetime App.  So it's likely it will still be limited to wifi due to insane lag.
Skype mobile is still exclusive to the Verizon network.
I don't know what you are looking at, but I see two versions available.
    http://www.droid-life.com/2010/10/05/skype-available-in-android-market-for-all-devices/
You're correct in that Skype now is open to all networks.  However the Skype Video is what the OP is referring to with At&t being over wifi.

  • Could someone with whom I had a Skype video call h...

Could someone hack and access my webcam and microphone after having a Skype video call with him?
I am worried if someone with whom I had a Skype video call could hack and access my webcam and microphone anytime he wants. I am using a MacBook Pro and I know that the green light is supposed to be turned on when the webcam is being used. However, I've heard that there are hackers that can turn off the green light, so that I don't know it is being used.
I hope you can help me. Thanks very much.

without the aid of any virus, malware, or similar elements, it would be impossible for anyone to access or hack the account (webcam, mic, etc) of other users.

  • IPhone 4 skype video chat

All my friends have skype and I'm the only one with an iPhone 4 so I can't video chat with any of them is there any guess to when skype video can be used on the iPhone 4 or if it will ever happen?

    Quoted from Skype:
"Skype is the market leader and champion of video calling for consumers and it's clear to us that mobile video will become increasingly important to our customers in the coming year. We are glad to see that Apple recognizes the value and potential of mobile video.
However, just to be clear, we are not considering FaceTime as a technological platform for video calling in our own products. Based on Apple's statement about FaceTime being an open platform, we are looking forward to see how this process unfolds. We look forward to working with Apple to bring the best possible mobile video calling experience not only to the millions of Skype users on the iPhone around the world, but also to the countless more making video calls on desktops, TVs and other connected devices."

I think that it is a good reason for T-Mobile not so sell it, possibly ever. European users are a lot more patient and tolerant to things like that, but imagine T-Mobile selling this -- the return rate would be high, and in the end they might get slapped by a class action lawsuit from some greedy lawyer for selling a phone that has advertised features that simply don't work!
Only a year and a half ago, the original G1/Android phone - which is still sold by T-Mobile - was far, far more immature and limited in respect to both the hardware and software than the N900/Maemo.  If you had been an early adopter of Android, Maemo now would seem totally amazing to you.
Nokia has never advertised video calling on the N900.  But it's in the works.  Support for #646#, etc. should be in the 1st firmware update which is in testing now and to be released soon.
