IChat video issue

Last night while trying to video chat with my daughter in law and grandson for the first time I couldn't connect with her video. She could see me but when she would try to accept my invite to talk the screen that should show her would be solid green. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Hi,
Ahh, AIM on a PC.
In theory this is supposed to work but it has become more and more difficult as both AIM and iChat have had new versions.
This is what we know to try to give the best chance
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
Summary of that.
PC End.
Allow AIM as an Exception in the firewall
Also Enable UPnP, particularly if their Routing device can use UPnP
Allow UPnP to control the ports in their Routing device.
In AIM on the PC turn Off the "Real Time" feature (It's like the Bonjour Chat send as I type in iChat but effects video as well in AIM to iChat connections).
Double check your Setting on the Mac.
Set iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth to 500kbps.
Use UPnP in your routing device.
Make sure your Firewall if On has Allow Signed Apps set in the Advanced Button and add iChat to the list (iChatAgent should also get added automatically)
Realistically you may have to chose either a another service or a Web Based/Browser option.
Either
Alternatives to iChat but Video chatting capable apps
iVisit A Mac and PC alternative. (does not use AIM or MSN or Jabber)
Skype Cross Platform IP telephony and Chat client. Now has a Mac version for Video chat
PalTalk.com
Gizmo Says it can link to almost anything. Free to Download. Looks like calls to landlines cost like Skype does.
or
Alternatives to iChat but Video chatting In a Web Browser
MeBeam. An option to use a Web site that create Private room for Video Chatting. Uses Flash to access your Camera and Mic.
iVideoChat Similar setup but a somewhat corporate type look to the site. Has Public rooms as well. Again uses Flash.
Googlemail/GoogeTalk now do a Version in a Web Browser
Tokbox A Site that can link your existing Buddy Lists that Uses Flash to Video chat in a Browser.

  • Ichat Video issues after update

Hello, this is my first post so apologies if i mess anything up. My iChat has suddenly lost video chat capabilities. After perusing the forums i was unable to find a solution to my problem so i'm hopeful that someone can help me out. So far what i've been able to determine is that its saying "This computer does not support video chats" and "Slow Network" I found this odd since i had been using video chats just 24 hours earlier. I still have audio chat capabilities though. I did install a new update on my mac in that time so i didn't know if that was the cause of the issues. I am now running iChat 5.0.3 (745) and OS X 10.6.7. I have checked my download and upload speed. DL= 25.15 Mbps and UL=11.94 Mbps which i've gleaned should be more than enough. If anyone has any idea's why this is happening or how to fix it i'd welcome them.

    Hi,
At iChat Launch it will check the hardware configuration and what Internet speed is available.
The speed is written to the com.apple.ichat.plist and is used as the basis for all iChat version after that (During the time iChat is still Open)
Starting up iChat whilst the computer is doing a download will effect this.
Same if another computer on the same router is using the internet heavily (Consider On-line games on Game Consoles).
Also getting iChat to Launch On Login to the Mac may get the app to start faster than it can Establish an Internet Connection (waking form sleep is prone to this) but maybe influenced by other apps starting and using the 'Net for Update checks.
Upload speed is the crucial one.
This should not be below 128kbps ("Real World" consider 256kbps)
A restart of iChat will most likely sort this.
If it persists delete com.apple.ichat.plist form your Home Folder/Library/Preferences (Drag to Trash)
Restart iChat after this and the .plist will be recreated from defaults.
This will mean that all your changes to anything but the accounts section of the iChat Preferences will be back to Defaults (Saved Transcripts, Font, Colour IM Colour etc.)

  • 10.6.2 still hasn't solved iChat video issues

I was hoping the 10.6.2 update would help iChat to work as it should but video pixellation remains as well as audio distortion. It's disappointing that Apple can't get the basics right.

    Hi!
I´m having the exact same issue since I´ve upgraded to SL. I even upgraded from a first gen macbook air to Macbook Pro to getter performace. Instead I ended up with a iChat that pixelates and audio is totally chopped, almost useless.
I have never had any issues with this before.
I did the speed test and I had.
    6mbit Up
    5.4 mbit down.
    ping 5ms
I hope apple take this seriously and release a fix for it.

  • Please help iChat video issues

I can't seem to use video chat. I was in a hotel room two weeks ago and it worked, prior to that I was over a buddy house and it worked. Now I'm am at my parents and it doesn't work, nor does it work in Starbucks or the public library. Any suggestions?
I can't do the audio, screen sharing either.

    Hi,
    This is the important info
    Chat ended with error -8
    Video Conference Error Report:
    Video Conference Support Report:
    Video Conference User Report:
    Binary Images Description for "iChat":
This says by the lack of info that your iChat is getting no feedback from the SNATMAP Server.
Your iChat sends or gets a visible Invite which is on port 5678 (Tiger and Leopard)
iChat then moves to port 5060 in iChat 3/Tiger and call the Connecting server SNATMAP as does your Buddies iChat.
They then tell the Server which ports they wnat to use and it "Negotiates" this then connects.
Your log, if the ports are open or not blocked, should show this progress (or connect).
    Causes.
Mac Firewall On in Tiger but ports not set for iChat (No Preset)
    See here for more.
ISP block port 5060-5063 for their Own VoIP service.
The bit on port 5060 in iChat uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) As Do VoIP apps and service/devices. Some ISPs are now blocking these ports until end Users pay more for the service. Explaining they are blocking an app you were using sometime s gets them to Unblock it.
Of course the same ports as listed in the See More item also need to be opened or allowed in the router and or modem if it routes.
At this point you may want to tell us the make and model of the connection devices you use and also what you have done to set them up for iChat.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my link to my website.

  • IChat video call not working.

    Hi there,
Please kindly advise on my ichat video issue.
ichat indicated this computer does not support video chat.
We have two mac connected to a router named Ericsson Broadband and the other mac ichat video is working but my isn't working and my macbook pro is newest than the other one. I have gone through the same configuration with the other mac which is working on Preference-Security, Preference-Sharing, Preference-Network. All same configuration as the other mac which ichat is working.
I did a install application download from gmail for the video but thereafter is not working i demounted it.
I did saw from youtube to delete the com.apple.ichat.plist file and is not working either so i reinstalled the ichat application again and also not working.
We can use Skype to chat and gmail video but not on ichat video only audio chat only.
I will be appreciate if you can list out the check list for me or other to check all the possible way of error on configuration.
Thanks in advance for your reply

  • IChat Video not working (Error -7/-8)

Another case of these strange iChat Video Issues (Error -8).
A friend of mine upgraded today from Tiger to Leopard. iChat 4 video is not working anymore. I thought it was my fault because of a recent router firmware upgrade. But I checked with another Buddy and it worked fine. So what to do? My friend did not change his setting since Autumn when we had the last chat (both using Tiger) and everything worked fine.
Following please find the protocols. Can anybody retrieve some useful Information?

    Kind Regards,

NAT can be done - in the routing device - in different ways.
Apps like iChat that have to work with or through NAT have to predict what that is or what the data is going to come across as it goes through different devices.
We know that in iChat's case this does seem to effect the checksums that refer to the ports being used and that it can be seen in the Error logs.
This is not anything to do with the way Apple Does NAT.
The Base Stations are a different matter though.
    These do DO NAT
Although they can be set to do Port Mapping which the Wiki page I linked above says in Miss-named as NAT - they actually do what Apple Calls NAT - PMP or NAT with Port Mapping Protocol which does something that looks like UPnP does, in that it is a One Setting that effects all connections with no setting of ports but allows multiple computers to use the ports.
    Wiki Link
    So it is NOT Leopard.
    It IS the Base Stations.
It IS because there is not an International Standard (or if there is that defines NAT Well enough)
    I hope this helps.

  • IChat backdrop issue--new video effect pixellating

Each time I use one of the new iChat video backdrops, my image pixellates once I enter the frame. When I move it's really bad. I've tried keeping my background as bright as possible and I have all the latest equipment.
Anyone else having this problem? I'm beginning to think that the new video backdrops suck. I'd thought I could use them for work videoconferencing, but the technology doesn't seem to be there yet.

It is more about the front lighting to your face than the background.
The Position over overhead lighting can be a problem if they are slightly behind you.

  • IChat video chat issues

iChat has been acting up recently. I have an iSight, the person I want to talk with has a Veo USB webcam. They are on a Windows XP computer using AIM 5.9, I am on a Mac OSX 10.4.5 using iChat 3.1.1. All my ports are forwarded, I have no firewall on, nor does he. Sometimes it will work. Once we got it to work so that I could see and hear him, and he could see and hear me. Lately though, it's been me seeing him, not hearing him, but he can see and hear me. Then it let me see him for a second, then it freezes, but he can see and hear me. I never have audio from the start from him. Somewhere in between there it will load to the point where I can see myself in the window but not him. Usually he can only see and hear me and I can't hear him, but once I could hear him. This is getting confusing and aggrivating. We both have the newest version of everything, and I have gone to every troubleshooter everywhere. What's up here?
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Michael,
IF you can connect, but his audio is missing there is a setting on his end that can sometimes help.
    Start a Chat.
You open the Connection Doctor from the iChat Video menu
He clicks on the rear of the two tabs where he sees your Video. This should be his preview.
When his preview is at the front there should be a small icon to the right.
If he clicks on that a slider will come up.
Sliding the slider to the left does in fact reduce the quality. (not that you can tell visually)
In the Connection Doctor you should see his bit rate and Framerate increase.
If there is enough adjustment of the Video quality the sound should kick in.
Adjust as required to achieve acceptable Video and Sound.

  • IChat video/audio fails to work

iChat video/audio fails to work 90% of the time. The error message says the other party failed to respond, or some other, similar, bogus "communication error" message.
Invitation to video or audio chat fails 100% of the time with certain buddies of mine, and anywhere from 50% to 90% of the time with others, regardless of whether they invite me or I invite them. Changing ISPs, Macs, locations, or static/dynamic IP settings has made no difference.
This problem surfaced with Tiger in the summer of 2007, and progressively became worse, especially since Leopard, to the point where iChat video/audio fails 100% of the time, unless the other user happens to be in the same [home] network.
All of a sudden the problem went away since the upgrade to 10.5.6, and I was able to again use iChat video to communicate with friends I have not been able to "see" in a year and a half! However, the problem started again today, with the same bogus "communication error" message every time a video connection attempt is made.
Screen Sharing also fails to work, 100% of the time, regardless of how it is invoked, through iChat or not, unless, again, it is attempted between 2 macs in the same home network.
In the meantime, Skype video works fine all the time.

    Hi,
Thomson-Alcatel by default do what is called Binding of SIP to port 5060
This means ANY SIP data is forced to that port. iChat 4 no longer uses this port for SIP. It caused problems in iChat 2 and 3 which could be resolved when the firmware was Version 4 or earlier.
    How do I know ?
Personal Experience from a Speedtouch 510v4 (running version 4.2.5 firmware)
Hence the web page I linked you to.
Built up from comments on the iChat 3 forum and the iChat 2 forum since 2004
Search Results for iChat 3 (it will only go back to about Nov 14th 2005 when the software Apple Uses to run the forums changed - some active threads did cross over this date so occasional ones are older)
    Smaller results from iChat 2
The work by iBoise in this forum and the ADSLGuide's Apple Forum
Known issues for the BT HOME HUB in Britain as it is a Thomson-Alcatel inside.
Because the fix on Page 4a in the orignal link I gave, worked until Version 5 firmware came out.
As I clearly said the results can be intermittent.
With non Speedtouches it tends to be a 10:10:30 split out of 50 Buddies
10 you can get all the time.
10 now and then Buddies and
    30 Never successful.
The Original Version 4 Telnet command would make this 100% successful to non Speedtouch devices
In Version 5 it becomes about 15:10:25 which only marginally better.
Later versions of the firmware do not even seem to reach these figures.
Speedtouch to Speedtouch connections are better but still not 100%
I would guess you live some where where Speedtouch's are popular and have many Speedtouch to Speedtouch connections that fair slightly better than average.
Last time I had contact with iBoise on this the Firmware was at version 7 and he was in the process of evaluating it for any changes.
There has been no announcement. In this case I don't think No News is Good News.
    I hope this helps.

  • The Origin of Random iChat video failu

I hope this topic gets a lot of response and reply from as many people as we can get involved. If you are like me you have been using iChat more of less happily for some months and then suddenly all **** breaks loose and you cannot initiate chats with one or another of your usual partners when neither of you have changed anything. PERIOD. Maybe it comes and goes, maybe you "fix" it with a seemingly random change. I would love to hear from someone and everyone about what can truly cause these problems. I have two brand new macs, an iMac about 5 months old and a 2 month powerbook. There are days that the powerbook will work on a video chat while the iMac fails every time (trust me we tried a LOT of times). In this case they are BOTH sitting behind the same cable modem, using the same wireless router and have been identically configured (trust me I checked, I looked in all the places etc etc). So, in my mind that eliminates the usual carbon copy post most people make telling everyone to check their router, firewall, NAT, uPnP, port forwarding etc etc etc.
My question to everyone is, what can POSSIBLY work in this way, ie which component is iChat having issues with.
    OR
Is it more likely a network issue EXTERNAL to my house and my chat partners home, i.e. bandwidth, routers etc etc... I don't think it could be speed. During a repeated failure I and my chat partner both went to speedcheck.com and both had well in excess of 500 kbps up and down, more like 1Mbps but I cannot recall the number so I dont want to exagerate here. . I am leaning this way just a bit because it works, then stops, then works, then fails with a different individual, then all is good etc etc you get the idea.
Basically what can get you failures that act this way. I am STUMPED. Is it apple code and an iChat bug? Is it just complicated (poor excuse), or is something really broken somewhere that somehow works most of the time until it decides not to work and then suddenly heals itself (you can see why I feel this is a bunk excuse).
    Anyhow... chime in

Yes, I think weʼre a growing lot of people who experience the severe limitations of iChat AV while other IM-clients have no problems and Skype is getting through everywhere. Textchatting is the only thing which works, but well...
Anyway, so far I have found out that one of the main reasons for these kind of problems, is that iChat is being a very "law abiding" citizen. It obeys rules and follow protocols while no one else seem to do so and that leaves a lot of us with problems.
There are ISPs who are blocking certain ports iChat needs to establish AV-chats and they do this mainly because they sell similar products like VoIP-telephony. The problem then, if you use a laptop and are travelling, it all depends on the network you connect to. Then it of course depends on the network your buddy is connected to.
To give an example; I used the landlordʼs internet the last two places I lived and I could not initiate a AV conversation nor accept one. I am still living in one of the places but decided to get my own internet and asked specifically that the ISP didnʼt block such ports as needed by iChat and I found the one for me - and it works again! But that will of course change if I take to the road with my iBook...
So, Apple, please make iChat a more forgiving and flexible application! If others can do so - MSN, Yahoo Messenger, Skype - it canʼt be that hard. And iChat is good when it works, maybe even the best. But my mother canʼt see her children and not hear them as we all intended her to do. Others cannot stay in touch with spouses and friends and colleagues when they are away.
Well, I hope my two øre can contribute to understand what the problem is. And to move Apple to do something about it.

  • Mom does not see my iChat video, but I see her, and my wife can see mine

When I iChat with Mom, I can see her, but she cannot see my iChat video. All she sees is herself as if she is still in iChat preview mode. Audio works fine. It is like a 1-way video chat with a 2-way audio chat, only we did not request this mode.
This was working for years (from when Mac OS X Panther first offered iChat video chats). Mom only seeing herself is a fairly new situation, but I can not pin down when it started, or what might have triggered it.
My wife can connect with my Mom, and again, my Mom's display stays in preview mode, but my wife can see my Mom, same as I see, only my wife is using her own MacBook Pro.
When I'm at Mom's using my MacBook, I can iChat with my wife. She can see me and I can see her. My wife and I can also successfully iChat video chat when she is away on business trips using the hotel's WiFi. I do not think it is my MacBook, nor my wife's MacBook Pro.
And also while at Mom's with my laptop right next to Mom's iMac G4 using a Bonjour local connection, I see what Mom is sending, but she stays in preview mode only seeing herself.
So I think I've eliminated the internet as a whole, and I've eliminated my MacBook as being the cause.
I really think it is Mom's iMac G4.
I've tried trashing all the iChat related .plist files, but I could have missed something.
Mom's Connection Doctor says it is getting stuff from me at between 13 and 15 frames/second, but all that is shown is her own iSight image.
    Some configuration details:
o Mom's 1.25GHz G4 PowerPC iMac is Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) all the latest updates.
o Mom uses the original firewire iSight.
o While I think I've eliminated the router, it is an 802.11n Airport Extreme (single transmitter in 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz mode, channel 1).
o Verizon DSL connection that has worked just fine in the past, beside same situation occurs when I'm sitting next to Mom using a Bonjour connection.
o Mom is 300 miles away, so I can not just drop in. However, I do have VNC access to Mom's system over an ssh tunnel.
    o Firewall is Off
o My 2GHz intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook is Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) all the latest updates (w/build-in iSight camera).
o My wife has an intel 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) all the latest updates (w/build-in iSight camera).
o My router is also an 802.11n Airport Extreme (single transmitter in 802.11n 5GHz only mode), with an older flying saucer Airport Extreme 802.11g in bridge mode to support older Macs and iPod Touchs.
o My broadband is also a Verizon DSL connection.
    o Firewall is Off.
Events that have happened recently. I'm not saying they are the cause, but generally things that did work do not stop working for no reason at all.
    o I've applied Apple's Software Updates.
o I've experimented with TeamViewer.com as an alternative to VNC for remote control (this did not involve video, but it was something new to the mix). NOTE: I DO NOT keep TeamViewer running. I find my VNC via OSXvnc to be satisfactory.
o My nephew moved back in with his Mom (my sister) and his Dad, which is where my Mom happens to live. However, my nephew has his own 12" G4 PowerBook, so he does not need to mess with Mom's. But then again, years ago, I found my Mom's previous Bondi Blue iMac had its web server enabed after a visit from my nephew. Of course now he is a college gradate and much more responsible. Oh yea my nephew was a College Quarterback for a Top Ten College, and I'm a bookworm type. I am not going to accuse my nephew of doing something to his grandmother's iMac unless I have absolute proof
o At one time I had the Chax plug-in installed on Mom's iMac G4. I used Chax to uninstall itself.
I'm stumped. I've tried all the problem isolation things I could think of, as well as the tried and true "Delete the .plist" trick (assuming I found the right .plist(s)).
Has anyone actually lived through this, solve it for someone else, other.

I would do the Latest Combo Installer for the OS level she is at.
That is going to have to wait until after Thanksgiving.
While I'm confident that applying/re-applying the latest Combo Update will not cause any problems, if anything goes wrong (and I know Murphy personally), I will not be able to drive the 300 miles to Mom's house until the weekend following the Thanksgiving weekend.
If I'm going to try doing something like this remotely, I'm not going to do it unless I can get in the car and be a Mom's house the next morning to clean up any mess I create.
So I will put your idea in my "To Do" list (I'll even create a Google Calendar event), to try this 4-Dec-2009.
Thank you for the idea. If I have not found a solution before the 4th, I will install the Combo update.
But I do have a question. Why would Mom's iChat display the video preview window showing what her iSight camera sees, if she was unable to display the remote video stream, just because there was a ColorSpace issue. Hay, I write software for a living, so I know that the left hand does not need to know what the right hand is doing, not the big toe, the elbow, an ear, etc... Software is full of paradoxes. But I figured I would just ask.
And I'm still going to give the Combo update a try on 4-Dec-2009.
But in the mean time. Other suggestions would be appreciated.
Does anyone have a laundry list of .plist files I should try deleting? I did try deleting some obvious ones, but maybe I missed something important, or maybe there is one that does not say iChat, but is just as important.
You never know, if I get enough ideas (tons of ideas), and they all still fail, and I'm frustrated beyond belief, maybe I'll break down and get Mom a nice 27" iMac for Christmas! But if I do that, I'm getting one for me first

  • IChat Video Not Working - Becoming Desparate!

    Hi,
    I have iChat 5.0.1 running on OS X 10.6.2
I have no problem getting onto iChat but I am unable to connect with video. If I initiate the video chat, it seems like it just times out. However, if I receive the invite, I get the following error message (see below).
Of particular note, I am able to connect when I bypass my wireless router (Linksys WRT54GL) and connect directly to the internet. I have tried doing everything (setup a static IP, turned DMZ on, turned off firewall on laptop and router, unchecked 'Block Anonymous Internet Requests', setup port range forward for ports 16393 to 16402, enabled UPnP). Also I am able to video chat with appleu3test01, appleu3test02, and appleu3test03. If anybody could help I would appreciate it tremendously! Thanks in advance.
    Josh

    Hi,
Error & (Remote IP Invalid) tends to come Up when your iChat senses that the other end has two connection to the Internet. (Such as the Buddy using Wifi AND Ethernet to the same router).
It can be seen on your end as it were if there is a Airport Base Station of some sort at your end that does not have Port Mapping Protocol enabled.
Apple's Port Mapping Protocol does, broadly speaking, is the same as UPnP on other devices, in effectively allowing the apps to state which ports to open and allowing multiple computers to use the same ports.
However on devices that have Port Forwarding and UPnP as different options to Open ports you do not get Error 7 as a issue at your end and almost certainly points to the Buddy.
There is a Problem in Leopard when in System Preferences > Sharing when Internet Sharing is On.
For some reason it creates "loop" where ichat can "See" the Internet twice.
On Intels this can be combined with running Parallels to run Windows (It also creates two VPNs in System Preferences > Network).
The Biggest issue to successful iChat Video Chats is NAT.
    NAT is Network Address Translation.
The more devices such and routing modems and routers you go through on your LAN the more likely NAT becomes an issue.
Presumably you are not using two connections to the Internet ? (not even a Wifi Able phone using Internet Sharing).
Presumably you are either using UPnP to open the ports or have used Port Forwarding to set the ports for iChat in the device you have ?
    ||iChat Ports||TCP||UDP||
    |AIM|5190|5190|
    |A/V|none|5678, 16393-16402|
    |Bonjour|5298|5297, 5298, 5353|
    |Jabber|5220,5222, 5223|none|
Note this is the iChat 4 and 5 Range
Add port 5060 UDP for iChat 2 and 3 and extend the group of 10 to 16384-16403 (20 ports)
iChat 4 and 5 also uses an undeclared Random port to do the Screen Sharing part and works if you can and do use UPnP (Or Port Mapping Protocol) to open ports in your routing device.

  • IChat video refresh rate

Hi. I am currently deployed to Iraq and am trying to use iChat to webcam with my wife and son back in the US. The audio portion seems to work okay, but the video is grainy and I can actually watch as the frame refreshes, little portions of the image refresh in sequence like a game of Space Invaders. My cable internet connection at home in the US is fast enough, but I know the issue lies here in Iraq with my connection speed. Which isn't bad, I can surf the internet and view streaming videos, download from iTunes, etc., in a reasonable time, just not as fast. I could compare this connection speed to a slow-moderate DSL speed.
Are there any setting within iChat or Quicktime or the system that I can adjust, or that my wife can adjust on her MacBook so that I can see and talk to my family while I am deployed?
    Thanks for any help.

Make sure the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming is set to 1.5 Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting
This will require a restart of iChat if you have to change it.
Then in iChat > Preferences > Video section there is a Bandwidth Limit drop down.
Ideally this should be set on NONE.
However you could try 500kbps or possibly 200kbps to see if it helps (I don't expect it to myself)
Before doing the second part use the Connection Doctor in the iChat Video menu and see what the local speed says you are sending.
If it is below 100kbps don't bother with the Bandwidth setting.

  • IChat Video Output

I am new to iChat, but am a fairly experienced Mac user. My question has to do with routing the video feed from a Video Chat to an external screen.
The basic plan is to broadcast a Video Chat on to a couple larger screens. The main issue I can't figure out is whether or not iChat is able to output the video feed via firewire or possibly even usb. I have checked through the iChat prefrences but can't seem to find anything about an output.
Any ideas or help would be aweseom!!!
    MacBook Pro 15in   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
It does depend how you want to go about this.
    Simplest.
Connect second screen (or Video capable OHP device) to the Mac's second Screen output.
Go to System Preferences > Displays
    Set it up to Mirror
Anything now on the Desktop will be displayed on the 'second' screen
iChat can not output the Video chat over Firewire or USB.
As to whether a Mac Video card on a computer with only one screen (be it integral or not) can drive two screens through a splitter I do not know.
A firewire link to another computer and Apple Remote Control or similar may add the option of running a larger screen from there (by displaying the first's desktop)
iMovie can output over Firewire at the same time you play a video on screen (it allows you to record to a camera or external VCR or such). However I know of no easy way to export the ichat Video chat to iMovie. (it might be AppleScriptable)
GarageBand can also record Video Chats. I have not looked into it's live export features. I would guess this may be Memory or processor prohibitive if it can be done.

  • IChat video conference corporate firewall help please!

    Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get an iChat video conference going, and I keep getting the pesky Error -8 problem. Here's the info i have:
    - My computer is an intel iMac. The other computer is an intel MacBook Pro, both have all software updates installed and built-in iSight cameras.
    - I am behind a corporate firewall. The other computer is not, but is on a very speedy internet connection.
    - Both mac firewalls are completely off.
    - I had corporate IT disable the firewall on the IP address of this computer (not even just the proper ports, but entirely disable it), and it's still giving me connection errors.
Anybody got any idea what the heck I can do to get these computers to play nice?
    Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi loudguitars,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
I apologise for any delay in getting to you.
iChat requires that ports are open in a modem or any interveening router. This is in addition to any Firewall the device may have.
These same ports need opening in any router or modem.
In addition to this the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab speed setting neds to match your download speed or a max of 1.5Mb/T1/Intranet/LAN if you are faster.
This will sometimes return error 8 although error 22 is more likely.
Error 8 effectively tells you that the connection can not be made because the ports are not open.
This in itself can be because of NAT problems.
IF you have a Router and a separate moem that both use NAT (Port Forwarding, Port Triggering or DMZ) in combo at your end or yor Buddy does there will be problems. The Log tells you little as to which problem it actually is.
If your ISP offers a VoIP service it may block port 5060 until you pay for their service. (Many ISPs believe only Internet phone services use this protocol).
In further addition if you and your Buddy have not Used NAT more than once at your respective ens it can be that if you are both still using a method that involves NAT that the two devices still don't "Play Nicely" due to the fact there are about 6 different ways of doing NAT and you may have two device that just don't get on.
If you have UPnP then use that.
Note: If the ISP NATs the service to you (normally with NON static, DHCP issued IP addresses) then this will count as One NAT at your end.
Apple did change iChat to version 3.1.5 with the 10.4.7 update. It was supposed to help in this area but I would say they moved in the wrong direction.
If you have a modem that has QUality of Service (QoS) or Denial of Service Attack protection and the settings for this are something you can alter then consider increasing that size of the amount of data that can get through as this can impinge of iChat due to the amount of data in a Video conference.
