Ichat video on mac with AIM on PC

I'm using ichat to use my webcam but every time i try to start a web cam conversation with someone who is using the PC version of AIM it doesn't work from my ichat. I'm wondering if there is a fix for this?

I'm having a similar problem. My friend has a webcam and AIM version 5.9, but when she tries to vid chat me it says my end is not compatable with video chat. I have iChat 3.1.5 (the latest version I'm pretty sure). Any ideas?

  • Three-way video conference MAC with AIM

Are you able to do a three-way video conference with 2 users with AIM accounts with one who has MAC accounts?
The person with the MAC account shows up not stacked to indicate multi-video conference.
    Just Wondering

    Hi DB in NB,
    It depends on...
Are they all using iChat 3
Do they have an Internet connection in excess of 384kbps both up and down ?
(there are some variants if the download is quicker that will allow you to have 256K up)
Do they have a Mac over a G4/1Ghz single processor
Is the one to be the Host a G4/1Gz Dual or greater ?
If they all fill this criteria and one does not show stacked icons then it needs some maintenance.
They should make sure the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab is set to 1.5Mbps
They should run the Cron scripts if they are not sure

  • IChat video & audio chat with AIM user not working

    Hi all,
I have a mobileme account. A friend has got a new Macbook with 10.5.5 and signed up for an AIM account. We've tried to do video chat (over the internet) with iChat 4 and cannot establish a session in either direction. It gets to the "Starting video chat..." part and then fails, telling us "did not recevie a response from ..."
Audio chat doesn't work for us either.
Video & audio chat works fine locally via Bonjour for us. It's just over the internet (through a NAT router if that matters) that multimedia chat does not function.
    Any ideas?

Yes, I have set the streaming speed to 500 on both mine and her end to no avail. I've also tried port 443, and we also tried using a jabber server (with google talk accounts). I didn't expect the jabber thing to work, as it's free and video/audio/screen sharing use non-trivial bandwidth.
I have not been able to do video, audio, or screen sharing with her at all. But I know these features work, as I have used them on my local wireless network via bonjour.
    Only bonjour...
Do both of us have to be paying customers of MobileMe to get video chat over the internet? It seems like only one should suffice...

I've tried changing my Port number - FAIL
I tried restarting and deleting account - FAIL
Tried creating a new account - FAIL, says there's an error
Tried going through Go > Finder > Library > Preferences to delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist - FAIL, couldn't find in the folder either
Tried going through keychains and permissions - FAIL
I've had the same account for over 13 years (maybe that's why, ha!) and I did nothing to change any settings. Please help! Work depends on it!

    Hi,
If it is an AIM name (i.e. Registered at AIM) then there seems to be  a rush of Suspended Accounts recently.
Some have found that touring abroad seems to be the latest reason.
You then need to go to the Suspended Account Help Page and use the TOS General Email link.
If you have an @Mac.com name that is of course a Valid AIM Screen Name as well as an Apple ID  means that the password has to be changed at Apple.
However the AIM server cannot tell that this has been done.
One person reported recently that the person they contacted via the TOSGeneral email link did not seem to know about the agreement with Apple that AIM has and that they had to change the "Flagging" on the account at their end.
Although a "Hacking" of an AIM account is not unheard of it is rare.
The TOS General link is still the best route I know of on that score.

  • My ichat is not working with AIM

I bought my macbook in march and have never been able to get my aim to work. It logs in but none of my contacts are ever shown as anything but offline and grayed out. I did check into my aim from my AOL email and it's the same way on there. I have searched and searched online for any answers as to why this is and can't find anything that works. I've tried switching the port to 443 instead of 5190, my privacy level is allow everyone, I've logged in/out and nothing is working. I don't know if this affects anything but my aim/aol account is also my apple id because I don't have a moblieme account?
    Any suggestions would be amazing!
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
You can get an AIM valid name without having an AOL email account and it would generally be just a Screen Name with no @AOL.com suffix.
That is not to say that you cannot enable AIM with your AOL email account.
Going back some years these email names could come form Netscape, CompuServe and various others that AOL bought up.
Generally though whichever Email type you had you had to Enable Instant Messaging on the account to use it with AIM.
    Have you done this ?
The port change in iChat 5 requires that you press the Enter key to "set" the port change.
Also are you using a Mac User Admin Account on your Mac or a Managed one with Parental Controls turned On ?
generally we need to know if you have ever used the same iChat info in any Mac User Account that has had or has Parental Controls turned ON.

  • IChat video conferencing problems with D-Link WBR-1310

    Howdy,
I am having a few problems with iChat video conferencing. I use the D-Link WBR-1310 wireless router and a MacBook. My girlfriend has a MacBook Pro at her school which she connects to via ethernet. I connect to my router via wireless. The routher is connected to a DSL modem. iChat video conferencing tends to work sometimes but very rarely. I have DMZ on the router turned on as i read somewhere on these forums that it was recommended. I also have the Apple firewall turned off so my laptop is pretty much naked as far as security is concerned. Three other computers use the network One desktop PC connected directly into the router and two Apple iBooks which are connected via the wireless. The problem is that i keep getting error message -8. Can anyone please help?
    Thanks in Advance

I'd start by verifying you have the most recent firmware installed on your router.
Next, start off by trying to test to a user that has no known issues: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html (Bottom of the page)
That will help pinpoint where the connection issue lies.
Once you can succefully connected, then you should set up a static ip address on your mac and port forward the necessary ports in your router. If you router supports UPnP, I'd try enabling the first.
    I hope this helps!

  • No video on mac with hardware accelaration enabled

hi there, i just posted this thread yesterday in the flash player category, but i think it might be more correct if its posted here. we are creating a live stream  with a digital rapids encoder, and getting no video on macs if the  hardware accelaration is enabled. we have also on demand videos which  are encoded over a main concept codec without this bug.
so  now my question. is it possible to disable the hardware acceleration  from within flash or does anybody have similar experiences?

Hi, I can only supply some information of the options the end user would have on Hardware Acceleration. From what I have read is that even though Adobe Flash Player has included the Mac to be able to use this, Apple may have only allowed it to function on certain Mac and iMac editions. So the end user can turn the H.A. off if it is causing issues with Videos etc. Also with the Flash Player version 10.1.82.76 the H.A. is turned ON by default, hence the option of turning it off. Now if a Mac user wants it on, or even those using other operating systems, it is also recommended to update the video and graphic drivers to the latest versions.
From your end as to what you do I have no idea since this is the Flash Player forum and just speaking for myself, I have no experience with what you do.
Perhaps the Flash Forum would be helpful or one of the Adobe Forums for the particular Adobe Program you use.
    Thanks,

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to solve this problem?

  • IChat video quality better with .Mac subscriber than with AIM?

The quality of my video chats with one brother who also has a .Mac account is noticeably better than my chats with another brother, who uses iChat with an AIM account. I'm in the US, they are both in UK. All of us have almost identical iMacs. The one with the AIM account supposedly has a faster Internet connection. My question: is the video quality of iChat better if both users have .Mac accounts than if one has an AIM account?

The Screen names make no difference.
It is about a combination of Proccessor, Video card in iChat 4, internet Connection and settings and the amount of Bandwidth you get out of that connection.
As Defcom (UK) has said start with those basic Settings.
In iChat 3 and 2 the Quicktime setting when on Automatic is read as a 0 (zero) and this effectively Caps iChat.
In iChat 4 the Automatic setting is seen as 384k which is the MINIMUM for a 4 way chat.
As far as an Internet Connection goes this should be at Least 100k in both Up and Downloads.
Due to some data stream management to cut down on Peer-to-Peer file Sharing it pays to limit iChat in the Video Section Bandwidth Limit section to slip under the Radar as it were. There are two main ISP doing this Comcast and Road Runner in the States.
Verizon offer a FioS fibre service that is not that stable in speeds and jumps all over the place which is then too fast for iChat to keep up and that should use the cap in iChat Preferences as well.

  • IChat AV 3.1.6 (Mac) with AIM 5.9 (PC) AV Chat external router port setting

    Hello,
I'm using iChat 3.1.6 on my Mac and want to videoconference (with audio) to PC users having installed AIM 5.9.
We can't get a videocon started probably due to firewall settings. I opened up my Mac firewalll ports, yet the external router has to be handled as well, as far as I've understood.
My external router is a FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7050 (UI), Firmware-Version 14.04.15. Does anybody know the exact procedure to open the necessary ports on this device? The user interface is somewhat clumsy, and I'm not the most experienced user. Your detailed instructions are much appreciated (c:

iMac Intel Core Duo 20" 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Dave, Ralph,
thanks to both of you for your helpful answers - I have tried port forwarding on my AVM Fritz!Box, and opening the indicated ports for TCP and for UDP works - except for port 5060 (UDP), where I get an error message "FEHLER: Eintrag kollidiert mit interner Regel." - the router won't accept the port number entry since it violates an internal rule.
I have tried to get support both from my ISP (1&1) and from AVM, the Fritz!Box manufacturer 3 days ago. AVM hasn't answered yet, I just got a ticket number from them so it seems they are working on it. 1&1, my ISP, claim they don't block any ports with their VoIP service, especially not port 5060.
Admittedly, being only one step away from a working solution, I'm somewhat clueless now.
Any more suggestions? It seems to be a specific AVM Fritz!Box problem (unless 1&1 admit otherwise)?
    Thanx
    Wolfgang

  • Can't video I Chat with AIM

After many hours of frustration and reading numerous posts I've just about given up. All I want to do is to be able to talk and see with my daughter using IChat. When I bought my ISight camera I was told it would be effortless getting set up. LIES!!!!!!!!
This is what I have: Dual 2GHZ G5, OS 10.4.8, IChat 3.1.5, ISight, Comcast Cable Braodband, Firewall is disabled.
My daughter has a new PC and I believe she is using Windows XP. She has been able to video talk with her brother using Yahoo. I tried Yahoo and was able to get video but no audio. I then had her get an AIM 5.9 account and we tried again tonight. Same thing, video but no audio. Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi Fir Na Tine,
Specifically the Tuning can be found here Message 570 onwards are the most important bits.
Access to these Preferences/Properties is now through the menu items of AIM rather than the icon described (it was written for AIM 5.5)
They do need to set AIM as an Exception for the XP Firewall. IF they are at service Pack 2 this is done like this Earlier version of XP have to have the Firewall disabled.
Of course they may also need to enable the ports AIM uses in their modem (1024-5000 + 5190 to log on) Or use UPnP. If using UPnP in their modem they need to Enable this as an Exception as well in the firewall.
    At the Mac End.
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab.
Set the drop down speed to match your download speed. If you exceed 1.5Meg then use 1.5Mbps as a Max setting.
(This presumes your Upload speed is over 100kbps).

  • IChat AV in Tiger with AIM

I know this has been discussed before, I've searched and read everything that exists on the subject on the Internet and I'm still having problems.
I'm in New Zealand and I have an iMac G5 running Tiger (10.4.2). My mum has just got broadband in the UK and has AIM with a camera running on her XP Home PC and we cannot get any video chats going at all. We've tried everything posted everywhere on the Internet and still have 'not responding' problems.
My sister in the UK has an eMac running Panther and she can video chat with me (on Tiger) and my mum (on XP) without any problems. My mother-in-law in the UK also has a Panther eMac on the same ISP as my mum and we can video chat no problem. Because of this we can't blame the ISPs, Windows XP, or the Macs, it can only be Tiger iChat.
None of us have any routers, only directly connected broadband modems. My modem does do NAT because I have a 10.x.x.x address, my mums doesn't as she has a public internet IP address. Even with all firewalls off we still cannot have a video chat.
So, in summary, here's what works and what doesn't.
My Tiger iMac to Panther eMac - WORKS
My Tiger iMac to Apple test iChats - WORKS
Panther eMac to my mums XP - WORKS
My Tiger to my mums XP - DOES NOT WORK
If people from Apple do read these posts, why not have an option in Tigers iChat to return to the Panther way of connecting??? (or just fix it).
If the problem is to do with NATs/routers/port forwarding then Apple are making a big mistake here because my computer-illiterate mum doesn't even know what her modem is so how's she going to change settings? and I'm 12000 miles away without a video connection. I really really really don't want to have to get a PC to be able to video chat with an XP machine, and I'm reluctant to get a Mac for my mum while there's issues with Tiger.
Can anyone who's maybe had the same setup as me and got it working point me in the right direction. I really don't want to have to reload Panther (nor should I have to Apple).
Anyone else using xtra broadband in NZ to chat to NTL broadband in the UK?
    Thanks

    Hi Neil,
This page Port Forwarding for the Dlink DSL-302G Router about your device does not seem to list an alternative way of opening the ports - such port triggeriing or UPnP.
This is the normal first step if both ends are doing NAT and there seems to be a problem.
This is what I know on the subject.
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy
IF you get the top of the page you will have to scroll to the Certain Buddy point.
I am in the UK and have no problems contacting people on other ISPs here.
Do you know where the 10.1.1.xxx address is being issued from as that link above suggests a different IP range if it is doing the DHCP.
IS it coming from another device or is ait a Static IP address that has been set up ?
Do you know what modem it is NTL have supplied your mother ?

  • IChat can't connect with AIM on Vista

I'm trying to conduct a video chat. I'm using iChat 3.1.9 (v446) and my sister is using AIM 5.8 on her brand new Dell laptop running Vista. We both have Linksys Routers which have all the recommended ports opened PLUS we both tried turning our firewalls completely off.
When she invites me, it tries to connect but ends up saying that I "did not respond". When I invite her, it sits in a perpetual state of "waiting for XX to connect". All sessions end with "error 8".
Help! It can't be this hard??

AS it is Vista I presume that is AIM 6.8

  • IChat screen sharing problem with AIM

    Hi,
I have two laptops - one is a MacBook and the other is a PowerBook. Both are running Leopard. At first, when I had tried using the screen sharing feature of iChat, it had worked flawlessly on both the Bonjour network as well as the AIM network.
Now, for some reason, I cannot get screen sharing to work using the AIM network. I am able to conduct text chats, audio chats and video chats, but no screen sharing over AIM. Screen sharing over the Bonjour network continues to work without a problem.
    Any advice?

For some reason ichat does not work when internet sharing is on.
Therefore that might be the problem with your screen sharing since you seem to not be able to get it to work (audio is part of the feature and if you have recently relocated you might not realize that internet sharing is on).

Also try deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restarting iChat.
This file is found in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and has to be manually navigated to as Spotlight will not look in this folder.
