IChat Video Output

I am new to iChat, but am a fairly experienced Mac user. My question has to do with routing the video feed from a Video Chat to an external screen.
The basic plan is to broadcast a Video Chat on to a couple larger screens. The main issue I can't figure out is whether or not iChat is able to output the video feed via firewire or possibly even usb. I have checked through the iChat prefrences but can't seem to find anything about an output.
Any ideas or help would be aweseom!!!
MacBook Pro 15in   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions
It does depend how you want to go about this.
Simplest.
Connect second screen (or Video capable OHP device) to the Mac's second Screen output.
Go to System Preferences > Displays
Set it up to Mirror
Anything now on the Desktop will be displayed on the 'second' screen
iChat can not output the Video chat over Firewire or USB.
As to whether a Mac Video card on a computer with only one screen (be it integral or not) can drive two screens through a splitter I do not know.
A firewire link to another computer and Apple Remote Control or similar may add the option of running a larger screen from there (by displaying the first's desktop)
iMovie can output over Firewire at the same time you play a video on screen (it allows you to record to a camera or external VCR or such). However I know of no easy way to export the ichat Video chat to iMovie. (it might be AppleScriptable)
GarageBand can also record Video Chats. I have not looked into it's live export features. I would guess this may be Memory or processor prohibitive if it can be done.

  • IChat video only in black and white?

When I use iChat, the video output is only in black and white. Does anyone know how I can get it to return to full color?

    Hi,
Click on your own Video icon so you have a Preview of your Video
GO to the Video Menu and Select Video Effects.
In there whichever "Page" it is On select the middle one.
iChat will remember any Effect or, on Intels, any Backdrop you set if it is still active on ending A Video chat.

  • IChat video quality inherantly suffers when over wireless EVDO aircard?

I am just guessing. Is this true? Or just in our case? Our being myself and my girlfriend, who is the one with a cam. I am new to iChat but I am not receiving that 'full screen, perfect quality' image that I thought iChat was supposed to have. You see, my girlfriend has a Macbook with its own built-in camera, so I am sure that camera is up to iChat specifications. But, her internet connection is through Sprint's EVDO USB modem. For the techs here, she is using the pretty new Sierra 595U, and she gets EVDO speed where she is.
Are there any iChat options she could tweak that would give her a higher bandwith output to me? SHe is not too technically inclined to discover this herself. Thanks!

My experience with using Sprint EVDO Revision A is that, while up and down tested speeds may seem more than adequate, the quality of iChat video connections and Slingbox slinging isn't as good as with similar tested connection speeds generated via DSL or cable.
I suspect this is due to greater latency and other factors associated with EVDO, including wild fluctuations in connection speeds. I assume your friend is making EVDO Rev A connections and not EVDO Rev 0 connections, which are inadequate for decent video connections.

  • IChat Video works without any manual port configuration

I'm posting this as a question and a true "discussion" with regards to iChat "video chat" operation with 2 users, both behind their own NAT router. I have seen several cases where iChat (ver3 and ver4) work just fine without any manual intervention. Of course, there are many other cases in these discussions where it seems a lot of complication and little positive result are part of the equation. Isn't iChat designed to work behind NAT routers ? Doesn't it use the SNATMAP server to get external (ie; public) IP and port number mappings ? If both users can login to the AIM server and initiate a Chat request, and contact the SNATMAP server, the next key requirement is to simply establish a point-to-point SIP session to the public IP/port of each endpoint.
    It seems the first thing to check is that this is happening correctly. In other words, the iChat debug log for userA should show something similar to;
    2008-01-29 18:59:21.739 iChat[2603] IPAndPortList: (
    {ip = "x.y.z.w"; port = 63217; },
    {ip = "a.b.c.d"; port = 16402; }
...where a.b.c.d represents the internal/private IP of a user (userB on Leopard iChat4 for example with 16402 representing all of the SIP, A/V, and A/V control ports) behind a NAT and x.y.z.w represents the external/public IP of userB. At least I think Leopard uses 16402 for the SIP. This shows that userA has the mapping for the SIP signaling port to send the SIP:invite to userB (ie; 63217).
    There is also something like;
185912.819694 Sending SNATMAP heartbeat to 11FAF895:5678
185912.912199 SNATMAP heartbeat resulted in IP change (from: 0 to: mm.nn.kk.pp)
185912.912251 SNATMAP heartbeat resulted in port change (from: 0 to: 64999)
..where mm.nn.kk.pp represent the HEX values for the userA public IP address and the 64999 (in this example only) represents the SIP signaling port for userA
    185921.738995 =========== OpenPorts!
    185921.832238 Public mapping: m.n.k.p:64998
    185921.923213 Public mapping: m.n.k.p:64991
    185922.014215 Public mapping: m.n.k.p:65018
    185922.104986 Public mapping: m.n.k.p:65098
...where m.n.k.p represents the public IP of userA (Tiger iChat3 in this case), and the 64xxx and 65xxx umbers represent the ports opened for A/V and A/V control. In other words, these are the mappings for the "typical" 16384, 16385, 16386, 16387 ports.
As long as both users have connectivity to the SNATMAP server, these "mappings" should proceed without problems, right ??
If both endpoints/users get these mappings, which appear to happen auto-magically between iChat and the SNATMAP server at "snatmap.mac.com:5678", iChat should move to the next phase which is to simply establish the point-to-point SIP call. Up to this point, I don't see why any port-mapping or for that matter, anything else needs to be done ?
Of course, AFTER this point, one does need to make sure no local computer "application" firewall is blocking 5190, 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 (Tiger) or 5190, 16384(or 16393?)-16402 (Leopard) .
If all is well to this point, and iChat actually sends a valid SIP:invite to the remote public SIP IP/port, with a valid SDP section, it's up to whether the endpoints can agree on the session parameters (ie; video codec, bitrate, frame-rate, etc..etc...)
Of course, there are many other things that could happen outside of iChat, like bad (or even good) installed software causing some weird problems, or running some application like virtualization or Internet Sharing that may have some "interop" issue...and maybe even a Service provider simply blocking the ports that the NAT has used (unlikely since they are probably different for every user and determined by each users NAT router)...but if you look at the iChat errorLogLevel7 debug output (preferably on both ends at the time of the call), you should be able to determine if iChat is sending a valid Invite...which is the prmary key in all of this.
Lastly, I have read about "symmetric" NAT routers which might actually pose a real problem even when using the SNATMAP server. This is because a symmetric NAT router will only allow traffic from the destination port that a source port was opened to...which in iChat's case is usualy the SNATMAP server. So it may not be possible to "open ports" via te SNATMAP server, but then get incoming SIP/video traffic from userB. In this case, then UPnP or NAT-PMP, or port-forwarding/triggering may help.
    Just some thoughts for discussion.

    Your totally right,
and from al the discussions here it seems that not every body knows that, and might be looking for the wrong answers. I wonder why Apple doesnot tell us how it is meant to work, and how to troubleshoot connections problems!
Ichat uses the SIP protocol and should work without any firewall/NAT configurations, for an explanation see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SessionInitiationProtocol
I have seen it work out of the box for several installations (single iMac, OS X 10.5, behind one ADSL router). In one situation i had to switch of the SIP helper application in the router
My own home network has 2 macs however, and sometimes it works and sometimes not.
    1) I found out that for local videochats i have to use the bonjour accounts, is that correct ? It should work with .MAC accounts too?
    2) for external communications i found out it is best to to stick to one Mac. When I switch from one to the other, using the same account (after logging out first), it often doesnot work, although it should. Any idea how to troubleshoot this problem? (now I rember I have to check this SIP helper application first
    3) when i setup a video chat to my mam who uses autoaccept, i am not able to take over the screen. Without autoaccept it works fine. So it looks like autoaccept won't allow you to share the screen.

  • How connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

how connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

If it is a thunderbolt version of the apple 27" display, you don't.  The TB displays can only work with a TB source.
I also think you are out of luck with the mini-displayport versions of the apple 27" as well.   This would imply converting an analog VGA output  to a digital input of the 27".  I suspect that there is not enough data supplied by VGA for that to work and I do not believe any adapters exist for this.

  • How can I do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder which does not have firewire out/input? it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite RCA output?

I need to do live streaming with a Mac Book Pro 2011, using a new model of Sony HD camcorder (http://store.sony.co...ber=HDRAX2000/H) ..this camcorder model does not have firewire out/input ..it comes only with a component video output, USB, HDMI and composite A/V video output..
I wonder how can I plug this camcorder to the firewire port of my laptop? Browsing on internet I found that Grass Valley Company produces this converter http://www.amazon.co...=A17MC6HOH9AVE6 ..but I am not sure -not even after checking the amazon reviews- if this device will send the video signal through firewire to my laptop, in order to live streaming properly? ..anyone in this forum could help me please?
    Thanx

I can't broadcast with the built in iSight webcam... how would I zoom in or zoom out? or how would I pan? I've seem people doing it walking with their laptops but that's not an option for me... there's nothing wrong with my USB ports but that's neither an option to stream video because as far as I know through USB you can't connect video in apple operating systems ..you can for sure plug any video cam or photo camera through usb but as a drive to transfer data not as a live video camera...  is by firewire an old interface developed by apple that you can connect all sorts of cameras to apple computers... unfortunately my new sony HDR-AX2000 camcorder doesn't have firewire output...

  • Vga or dvi to video output to NTSC TV viewing

GEAR: I have a G4 dual 1.25 (silver double doors) with an ADC and DVI output in the back.
OBJECTIVE: I need to go from that to an NTSC TV so I can see what my edits look like.
NOT SURE: I have seen the Apple adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/7200505/wo/0K4TK pkMz7f922WszZYxFQMUy31/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.2.3) but it says it is for the MAC mini and the G5 only... does that mean it won't work for me?
OPTION B: Is getting a video card with an RCA or S-video output a better idea? If so which one? I am using both the ADC and DVI ports for two monitors, but would nuke one if necessary because I have to get this TV viewing capability up and running.
OPTION C for CANOPUS: I have also thought about the Canopus ADVC 100 or 300 so I can capture video from sources other than my DV Sony DSR-30. Right now, I have to record everything (everything that isn't DV) to DV on the DSR-30 before turning around to send it via firewire for capturing in FCP. Would the Caopus ADVC 100 or 300 also solve the TV viewing problem as well?
    THANKS: in advance

Firewire to a DV/analog converter to your NTSC monitor. The only way for DV.
the DV/Analog converter can be either a dedicated converter (eg Canopus), a DV VTR deck (eg Sony DSR-11) or a camcorder.
the other options are not what you need.
    cherios,

  • TV (video) output from new nano looks very good!

Just a comment for those who may be wondering how the video quality on the new iPod nano looks when output to a TV. I have one of the old iPod AV docks with the s-video port and the new nano seems to work fine with that combination (using a standard s-video cable between the dock and the TV). Thus far I'm really impressed with the video quality, I can't see a single problem, the color is good, the quality and sharpness is as good as I've seen from any iTunes Store content, and as far as I can tell the frame rate is fine (no stuttering, skipped frames, or problems with audio sync). I'm amazed that such high quality video can come from such a small device. If it continues to look this good (after viewing more content and after more testing) then I think Apple may have "hit one out of the park." This thing could turn out to be the most popular iPod yet (if you have any interested in video and still want a small device).

I just found out that the video out (TV) on the new nano supports video playlists so you can create playlists for back-to-back display on the TV. Not even the AppleTV will do that (even though the latter has been a highly requested feature for the AppleTV since day one). In fact, if you can do without the on-TV menus you may find that the nano is a better video output device than is the AppleTV (that is, the menus system on the nano doesn't appear on the TV output).
Also, I just competed a few hours of video playback to my big-screen TV from the nano and I'm still impressed. No video problems at all, looks very good considering the quality limitation from the content that is currently on the iTunes Store (limited to standard definition, no HD movies, HD TV, or HD music videos as yet).

  • Video output failure

    I have a 2008 black MacBook, a Mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter and a Mini-DVI-to-"Video" adapter (AKA a Mini-DVI-to-RCA-and-S-Video adapter). The -to-VGA adapter /was/ working fine.
After I got the -to-video adapter I was having some problems making it work. A few places said I had to set it to 50Hz (which makes no sense as NTSC is 60Hz, but anyway), but that option wasn't available to me. I poked around, and apparently made the video out go completely insane. Now, when I plug in either adapter (regardless of whether anything is plugged in to them), the screen goes blue for a moment as if it's detecting a new display, but then it just goes back to normal with no new display detected. Running "detect displays" manually makes no difference, and neither does having something plugged in on the other end or not.
At this point, I can't use video output for any purpose, which is sort of annoying ...

  • My new (2 weeks old) Macbook Pro, wont send video output signal to beamer... What can I do?  I have the adapter to vga but it does not work...

Hi, I have a new MacBook Pro and I dont get video output to a beamer although I have the regular
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and it works fine with my older MacBook...
Thanks a lot for your tips...

That should work. When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In SystemPreferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you also want audio you'll need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable

  • MacBook Pro to TV, Video Output Too Dark

    Hi,
    I have an 2010 model 15" MacBook Pro i5.
I got this video converter for Christmas:
    http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-VGA2TV-Computer-Presentation-Converter/dp/B000X3 FAJU/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&qid=1295210644&sr=8-4
Using this in conjunction with an Apple Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and a standard RCA video cable, I am able to connect my MacBook to my TV so I can stream video from sites like Hulu.
My TV is a Sanyo flat screen CRT that's, probably, 6-7 years old (exact model probably isn't important).
I have no issues with the quality of the video output I'm getting (i.e. resolution, color). The issue I'm having is that the video is too dark. The video looks great on my MacBook screen, but the TV display is too dark. I have tried playing with the settings on the TV and on the converter (through which I can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and sharpness) and I can't, for the life of me, get the output to my TV brightened up to an acceptable level.
I have tried to use the display calibration tool in the Mac's display preferences and that didn't seem to help (I'll admit that I don't think I'm doing it correctly).
Can anyone suggest some steps that I might try in order to improve my video output?
    Thanks.

No Answer, but related problem...please see my original post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2773439&stqc=true

  • S-video output B&W

    Hi,
From time to time I like to connect my PowerBook to TV thorugh S-video (using adapter S-Video to scart) to watch movies with friends etc.
Though, it has been some time (over half a yar) when I last watched a movie on TV that way. Since I know for sure that I have been able to connect my pb to tv via s-video with no problems I can't understand whats wrong now.
Here's the thing. When I connected my PB to a TV now, it shows the picture in black&white on the TV. Anyone know how to get back the colour image? I have the same cable set that I used before to connect to tv (latter is the same one also) without any problems - full colour. So, I think the problem is software-related (maybe os x update).
Can anyone recommend what to do to get the colour back?
    cheers,
    r. pello
P.S. PB's lcd screen works fine. So, problem only with s-video output colour.
    PowerBook G4 (1.67 GHz, 15")   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iMac (Summer 2000, 120GB HDD)

Have you checked the resolution/TV type in the Displays preference pane once the TV is connected? If your PB is detecting your TV as PAL rather than NTSC (or vice versa), that could certainly cause a loss of colour like you describe.

    Hi
Can you answer these questions please?

  • IMac g5, no video output

I just replaced the logic board and power supply on my G5 imac, both of which were bad.  Now, when I power on, all three LEDs on the logic board come on, t there's no video output.  The video had been working fine before the logic board and power supply failed.
THe tech note says to try resetting the PRAM.  We have a wireless (usb) keyboard, and holding down option-apple-p-r doesn't seem to do anything.  Is there another way to reset the pram?
Any other suggestions would be welcomed.  Replacing

    THanks Moke.
OK, I bought a wired keyboard and tried to reset the pram.  I think it worked -- it rebooted the computer and the chime came on again.  But there's still no video output.  Not sure if that means I should replace the screen or the video inverter or both or if it could be something else altogether.
    Any ideas?

  • IChat video/audio fails to work

iChat video/audio fails to work 90% of the time. The error message says the other party failed to respond, or some other, similar, bogus "communication error" message.
Invitation to video or audio chat fails 100% of the time with certain buddies of mine, and anywhere from 50% to 90% of the time with others, regardless of whether they invite me or I invite them. Changing ISPs, Macs, locations, or static/dynamic IP settings has made no difference.
This problem surfaced with Tiger in the summer of 2007, and progressively became worse, especially since Leopard, to the point where iChat video/audio fails 100% of the time, unless the other user happens to be in the same [home] network.
All of a sudden the problem went away since the upgrade to 10.5.6, and I was able to again use iChat video to communicate with friends I have not been able to "see" in a year and a half! However, the problem started again today, with the same bogus "communication error" message every time a video connection attempt is made.
Screen Sharing also fails to work, 100% of the time, regardless of how it is invoked, through iChat or not, unless, again, it is attempted between 2 macs in the same home network.
In the meantime, Skype video works fine all the time.

    Hi,
Thomson-Alcatel by default do what is called Binding of SIP to port 5060
This means ANY SIP data is forced to that port. iChat 4 no longer uses this port for SIP. It caused problems in iChat 2 and 3 which could be resolved when the firmware was Version 4 or earlier.
    How do I know ?
Personal Experience from a Speedtouch 510v4 (running version 4.2.5 firmware)
Hence the web page I linked you to.
Built up from comments on the iChat 3 forum and the iChat 2 forum since 2004
Search Results for iChat 3 (it will only go back to about Nov 14th 2005 when the software Apple Uses to run the forums changed - some active threads did cross over this date so occasional ones are older)
    Smaller results from iChat 2
The work by iBoise in this forum and the ADSLGuide's Apple Forum
Known issues for the BT HOME HUB in Britain as it is a Thomson-Alcatel inside.
Because the fix on Page 4a in the orignal link I gave, worked until Version 5 firmware came out.
As I clearly said the results can be intermittent.
With non Speedtouches it tends to be a 10:10:30 split out of 50 Buddies
10 you can get all the time.
10 now and then Buddies and
    30 Never successful.
The Original Version 4 Telnet command would make this 100% successful to non Speedtouch devices
In Version 5 it becomes about 15:10:25 which only marginally better.
Later versions of the firmware do not even seem to reach these figures.
Speedtouch to Speedtouch connections are better but still not 100%
I would guess you live some where where Speedtouch's are popular and have many Speedtouch to Speedtouch connections that fair slightly better than average.
Last time I had contact with iBoise on this the Firmware was at version 7 and he was in the process of evaluating it for any changes.
There has been no announcement. In this case I don't think No News is Good News.
    I hope this helps.
