IChat videoconferencing inhibited by AirPort Express

Hi all,
I've been unable to videoconference or connect via audio on iChat using my AirPort Express... It's becoming more and more problematic as I've seen relevant posts on this subject- but none that I could understand well enough to make work for me. With that said, let me offer up the details of my situation and hope that someone out there can tell me which settings to adjust:
I'm using a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.8. I am using my AirPort express to transmit the connection coming from my Motorola cable modem. There are currently 2 laptops using the network.
Also, I have turned my MacBook Pro's firewall off and have been able to videoconference (etc) using iChat when connected directly to the modem with an ethernet cable. Additionally, Skype and other programs work without problems wirelessly.
Hopefully, this is enough information for someone to help me out- and please be as elementary possible when describing a possible solution since I have a limited understanding of technology... Thanks!

Hi,
It is in your Home Folder/Library/Preferences.
Most likely Port Mapping Protocol needs Enabling in the Base Station.
(Internet Pane > NAT Tab)
If your Modem routes (combined Device don't have the Airport Base Station Routing as well (Share an IP on the Internet pane).
Again if the Modem routes it will need to allow the ports iChat uses.
Opening these will depend on what methods you have of opening the ports.

  • IMac iChat AV to PC via same Airport Express

    Hello everyone:
I am trying to iChat from my iMac Intel Core Duo (running 10.4.8) to an IBM laptop using AIM's video messenger on the same Airport Express network. I have not been able to connect the two - can Airport handle an iChat on the same network? I have run through the threads here and have changed the Quicktime, DHCP, Distribute IP address and Firewall settings. Below is the error message it sends to Apple. I also have been able to connect my iMac via iChat to the Apple dummy servers.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi emfaulkner,
Have you allowed the ports iChat uses in the Modem ?
Same for the AIM application ?
Using an Airport device will NAT to both computers if it is default mode.
If the modem has to route and is doing a NAT based method then iChat will not like it.
What have you actually got set up now ?
You mention you have changed everything but I could say the same things about my clothes and it would tell you nothing about what I am wearing.
    Which Modem ?
What have you done to set that Up ?
What has been done on the PC ?
Has AIM be tuned to the Mic and Camera ?
Has the Firewall on XP had the application allowed as an exception ?

  • Cannot Ichat with Airport Express

    Hi all,
Having installed Leopard on our Imac G5 we could no longer do ichat, we also had a new router a Speedtouch ST536 v6. We solved the problem with the help of the helpline at speedtouch, they got me to set up a PPPoE account and that enabled us to do ichat with family in the UK. What we really want is a wireless connection so we then installed an airport card and installed airport express. We can happily connect to the internet and email but again we cannot video ichat (we can text). I have spoken to apple and to speedtouch neither will accept responsibility for our problem. If the modem is the problem then can someone just tell me or does anyone, I don't fully understand what a PPPoE connection is and why this works but Airport Express does. I am desperate to be wireless and use ichat, HOW CAN THIS BE ACHEIVED. Any help gratefully receibed, I am so frustrated with the whole thing!!!!

If it's not already, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) should be configured as a "bridge."
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "bridge," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort > Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    o Network Name: <leave the default>
    o Radio Mode: 802.11b/g compatible
    o Channel: Automatic
    Internet > Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

  • Connecting a webcam using airport Express.

I have a Logitech webcam that I use with ichat. The webcam is working fine when connected directly to the MacBook via usb port. I would like relocating the webcam and use Airport Express to connect it wireless. Is it possible?

    hi
the only option is to get a wireless webcam for Mac
    you can do search on
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=&q=macwirelesswebcam&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_en-GBGB393GB393&ie=UTF-8
there are couple around but the image quality is not as good as you get from a usb webcam but hey it still good if you are doing surveillance purpose

  • Can anyone recommend an ethernet modem for AirPort Express?

Well I think I want an ethernet modem as I don't know the differences between those and routers or whatever. I just want to access my broadband ADSL Demon account wirelessly with my AirPort Express. I'm currently 'using' an XBridgeDSL bought from the Apple store, but it's proving unreliable (I constantly have to reset it by turning the power on and off). The only other one Apple sell which seems suitable is the D-Link but that apparently only works if one computer is using the connection. Any ideas?

The only true Ethernet Modem that passes the IP address to the Express is the X-Modem but unfortunately it is as yet still not available due to manufacturing delays. However you can use an ADSL Router by switching off the distribute IP addresses in the Airport Express. The only down side to that is that you may have to configure port forwarding rules in the router if you want to do iChat AV conferencing etc.

  • More error -8 issues - Linksys BEFSR41 to Airport Express

Hey there, I hope you guys can help b/c I am having a heck of a time with this. I'm having Error-8 issues with my ichat AV 3.1 despite numerous changes. Here's the setup.
Motorola cable modem-->Linksys BEFSR41 wired router-->Airport Express and Vonage VOIP conected to router.
Imac Intel 2 GHZ 20" and MBP CD 2.16GHZ both running Tiger 10.4.10
Router setup: DHCP enabled (Obtain IP automatically, all port forwarding ports opened as per Ralph's numerous posts. Disabled DMZ, Disabled UPnP b/c Airport Express does not support (Even though the router CAN use UPnP). MTU enabled 1492
Comcast Cable: I called them and they do not give out DNS's for setting up static IP addresses.
    Router IP: 192.168.1.1
    DHCP starting IP: 192.168.1.100
    Range: 192.168.1.100 - .149
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Airport Express setup:
    Internet tab: Using DHCP
    IP address: 192.168.1.102
DNS Server: 68.87.85.98, and (in grey next to it) 68.87.69.146
    WPA2 Personal Security
Network tab: "Distribute IP addresses" DISABLED
Port mapping, Access control, and WDS tabs all left blank.
    Imac Network Prefs:
    Airport connected to internet
    IP Adddress: 168.192.1.101 Using DHCP
    Mac Firewall OFF
Quicktime Prefs: Set to 1.5 MBPS T1/ Internet LAN
iChat Prefs: AIM port set to 443 b/c of Vonage. Bandwidth set to NONE.
    MBP Network prefs:
    Airport connected to internet
    IP Adddress: 168.192.1.100 Using DHCP
    Mac Firewall OFF
Quicktime Prefs: Set to 1.5 MBPS T1/ Internet LAN
iChat Prefs: AIM port set to 443 b/c of Vonage. Bandwidth set to NONE.
Main issues.... error -8 when trying to video or audio chat. Tested with appleu3test03= NO GO with Intel iMac but MBP works! Tried vid chat with brother and NEITHER WORK.
I cannot figure out what is going on but I think it is the router. Problems started when I switched to Linksys from netgear. Could it be that I need to just pony up and get an Airport Extreme so that I can utilize UPnP? Or am I missing something.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Pete
iMac Intel and MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
I would renumber the devices radiating out from the router (192.168.1.1)
    Airport 192.168.1.100
    Computer one 192.168.1.101
    Computer two 192.168.1.102
It's not a big thing but I prefer it in case the power goes off or things needs rebooting. And it points to the order of things
The Airport doing NO Distributing Addresses should allow UPnP to work. It's just a dumb Wireless Access Point now.
Otherwise if you are doing Port Forwarding it will be to only one Computer and only Text chatting will work on both due to the 443 port being below 1024(NAT)
If the Airport is not allowing UPnP then I would go for Port Triggering if your Linksys does it.
Some BEFS41 versions do. I have linked yo to the lowest version listed on the Port Forward site's Triggering pages.
Don't worry too much about the PC app they say you need.
Fill in the Trigger port at the top and without hitting enter scroll down to see how that effects the table.
Then set it up like this
This pic shows Port 5190 and the AV ports
You will need to add the Bonjour Ports (5297, 5298 and 5353) and Jabber ones (5220, 5222, 5223) as single lines like the port 5190
On My Linksys you did not have to specify Protocols. Nor do you on the link above.
As you have gone Static (router to Airport) you could try allowing the Airport to do Distributing Addresses as the Subnet problem will have been dealt with and the NAT issue will be more linear.
The Vonage device will have conflict on port 5060 (In fact 5060-5063) with iChat if In-Line between the computers and the Modem. Your set up suggests that this is not the case and it should not be an issue.
If by Brother you mean the other computer this will need the Bonjour Ports in both directions (5297, 5298 and 5353) to be able to work.
Strangely this still needs the port 5060 and does contact the SNATMAP server according to my Little Snitch hence the reason for UPnP or Port Triggering for your LAN.

  • Airport Express Hangups

Ok, I have a strange problem involving my G4 Powerbook, Airport Express and my printer (Cannon MP770 – A Japanese printer similar to this one). I think I may have a port problem. Someone please tell me….
Last year I had no problem printing with my wireless setup. I would tell it to print, the file would send and it would work no problem. THEN, in September, I moved and things haven’t been the same since. Now when I use my wireless setup to try to print things, the file will begin to send, then halfway through (sometimes more or less than halfway, some times 90% done), the printing que stops sending the info, it just hangs up and the printer waits and waits and never finishes printing. Sometimes I have to unplug the printer to get it to respond when this happens. Needless to say this wastes a lot of paper. It doesn’t seem to be a computer/printer compatibility issue because when I get tired of it all, I just walk to the other side of the room, plug my printer directly into my USB port and there is no problem at all. The program doesn't seem to matter either, if I print from iTunes (CD jackets), iPhoto, Preview or anything at all it seems to be the same, always hanging up and wasting more trees.
Recently, I created a Jabber account and my printer preferences gave me the option of a “Bonjour” printer. When this happened, the wireless printing hang-ups didn't seem to happen. But then, for some reason my Jabber account password stopped working and I cant log into iChat’s Jabber (maybe I should have done something else after I registered my name) and I now longer have that option…. This is what made me think that this was a port problem…
    Variables:
I’m on the latest version of Tiger.
When I moved, I had the same ADSL modem and router as I did last year when it was working, so I was wondering if this was a Tiger update problem.
Now my apartment is using fiber optic internet and I have a modem/router setup made by the Japanese telephone company called NTT. Not sure how much help that is…
So, I'm sure I will need to give everyone more information. I'm gonna post this question in several forums cause I’m not sure where the final answer will come from.
Do I need to adjust Airport Express? Open some ports? Adjust Airmac?
    I'm at a loss…
Thanks in advance for the suggestions…
    Erich

i was having the hangup problem since i moved last september. since that time, when i added my printer to my airmac express network, it always said "apple base station" under "connection" in the "print browser". recently though, i logged into ichat and i activated my bonjour account by clicking the "Use Bonjour Instant Messaging" box. Since then, i re-added the printer using the "Printer Browser" and it now lists "Bonjour" as the connection. The location is listed as "Base Station 611be5" but i do NOT remember it saying Bonjour under the connection before.
i am guessing that when i activated bonjour in my iChat preferences it triggered problem free printing.....or it might have something to do with creating that Jabber account. somehoe it seems to have opened some ports that dont hang up or something... does your "print browser" list "bonjour as your connection?
    good luck.

  • Can't initiate video conference in iChatAV (using airport express)

I have a variation of a problem with starting video conference in iChat via airport express - did read previous posts to the subject but did not find a solution yet.
The problem is: I can't initiate the video conference with my new intel core duo iMac - but I can have one, when the user on the other side initiates it.
I assume this has to do with port forwarding on airport express, since I also have an older iMac G4 which until now was connected to the internet via Siemens ADSL modem C010-I(ethernet) and it worked just fine.
    My firewall is off.
I tried to forward ports 4099, 5190 and 5193 (as suggested by www.portforward.com) but that didn't seem to solve the issue. Any other ideas, please?

    Hi Reed,
If the modem routes then there is a chance it is doing DHCP as default if you have not changed it.
You can check by connection direct to the modem with your computer and then doing this:
Go to System Preferences > Network.
Select Built in Ethernet in the second drop down.
    Select the TCP/IP tab
If the IP listed below the Using DHCP drop down appears the same as when you go here then the modem is in Bridge mode. If it appears to be in one of these groups:
    192.168.xxx.xxx
    10.xxx.xxx.xxx
or 172.16.xxx.xxx through 172.32.xxx.xxx then the modem is routing.
The Airport does DHCP by default as well.
You do not want two DHCP servers.
This can be turned off in Airport Admin Utility found in Applications/Utilities
Log in to the Airport in the samll window and then go to the Network tab
Deselect Distributing Addresses if the modem is routing.

  • Airport Express Stopped Connecting to Internet, but Computer Says It Is

    Hi,
I usually can find answers on these forums, through FAQs and troubleshooting, but this one's got me stumped. I've got an Airport Express Base Station. It worked great and then one day - it stopped working. Literally, I was online until about 12:30am, went to bed, and then at 10:00am the next morning all was lost. In the airport status in the menu bar, both my laptop (running 10.4.11) and my husband's (running 10.5.x - not sure which)show the base station is connected and working. In Internet Connect, it says the base station is working. But I cannot connect through Firefox, Safari or iChat. I know its not the cable modem because right now I'm directly connected through the ethernet line (and obviously it works since I'm on this discussion board). I've rebooted, my machine, the Airport Express, the cable modem about 20 times, in all different sequences, with the same results. I tried troubleshooting through Network System Preferences and still, a no-go. The funny thing is, if I plug in the printer and the ethernet line to the Airport Express, I can't connect to the internet but can print just fine. I've also tried to reboot the base station to Factory Settings and it doesn't seem to be doing that (plug it in while putting a paperclip in the reset button). Is it broken? Did it fry inside? Anyone have any suggestions? Help!

Well, to anyone else that may have had this problem, I was able to reset the base station to its factory settings. Turns out I wasn't holding the reset button down long enough (duh). Went through Airport Setup Assistant and everything's working fine now. Phew!

  • AirPort Express 802.11n WiFi ???

I just purchased the iPad2 in the US as well as the wireless modem...AirPort Express.
Now back in Australia I a do not know what to do to set up the wireless modem.
I have a pc (not a Mac ) & modem(not wireless in my home office).................
So does the wireless modem just replace it or what.
The AirPortExpress does come with a CD but I don't know if it is explanatory or part of the process for set up.
I read on the net somewheere that I need to "insert a card"?????
I want to have both the iPad2 7 my pc operational at the same time.
    Thanks for any simple advice.
I am hesitant to try to set it up on my own in case I mess it up bigtime.
Another thing is the Airport Express the same as a wireless modem???

    Hi,
Ethernet cable do have relatively big connectors on them
They are similar to telephone ones that are also used with DSL modems.
The pic below shows the two types used here in the UK
The larger one tends to fit the wall socket and the smaller one comes on newer phones and other capable equipment.
In some cases the cable will have connector of each type at opposite ends as the device will tend to have the smaller socket (two of my earlier Macs do and came with cabled with both types of connector)
Some Modems have just one Ethernet port such as this one (It also has  Phone Port and a USB one)
Some have multiple Ethernet ports such as this one (4 ports plus Phone Port)
As you see by the Linksys pic and the black device in the last pic that,  in some cases, the "Phone port" has  different connector to the larger one in the second, telephone connector picture, at the device end.  (that as you say looks very similar to Ethernet ports and connectors but is in fact different.)
If you have a Modem that is more like the Linksys model where it has one Ethernet cable and one USB port  plus the connector to the Phone line then you will have a problem.
    Notes
    Modems
These can be Cable or ADSL (DSL for Short)
They can be plain Modems and pass on the Public IP number to a router or a computer.
They may have only one Ethernet port and not route
They may have a USB port as well and work as a USB modem asn well as an Ethernet one and have some routing abilities
There is at least one ADSL modem I know of that has only one Ethernet port but does route  (it needs a Hub rather than router to expand it's network)
Some modems like the last  picture have the ability to connect 4 devices by cable.
These would route and using Hubs (not routers) could potentially handle 255 other devices being connected.
There are some modems that are just USB.
    Hubs or Switches
Would tend to have 5 ports (Ethernet) as a Minimum.  I Upline to Modem or router  and 4 downline to computers and other devices.
    Routers
Tend to start with at least 4 Ethernet Port one of which is the Upline connection.
As a routing modem and router would generally have different IP address the router could keep some computers in a different Subnet (The router would be one of the modem 255 devices bit could handle 255 or it's own)
    Networks
For small home networks it is probably best to avoid creating Subnets unless you have to.
Ideally the modem should pass off all routing actions to the router.
The Router should be capable of handling Ethernet and WiFi connection if that is possible.
The Airport Express is more of a network Extender (into Wifi) than it is a fully fledged router. (it does have the AirTunes ability and the USB Printer options)
With an Apple Base Station it is possible to put it into what is called Bridge Mode where it does literally extend the network without routing (making it what is called a WiFi Access Point)
The Modem would need to route.
If this is your situation then you would probably need a switch/Hub to get the PC co connect via Ethernet as well as having the Airport Base Station to do WiFi.
If we  knew your ISP and the equipment/modem you have (down to Make, Model and version) then we could be a little more precise in your next move.
    (pics would also help)

  • Airport Express Freezes

During the past few days my Airport Express seems to be freezing on me. I will be on iChat or browsing around on Safari and all of a sudden pages aren't loading and I'm not receiving my IMs. So I have to turn Airport Off, and then back on again to get the internet to work again. All the while, I'm at full bar status as connectivity strength and I'm always sitting about 4-5 feet way from my Wireless modem.
Any ideas how to fix this?
PS. I tried running the Hardware Test and the result for Airport was good.

What do those utilities do exactly and are they free? And why would I all of a sudden need them if my Airport was working fine all along before...just wondering?
Also, I did try hardwiring the internet to my PowerMac with the Ethernet cable but then the internet ran slower (it took longer for pages to load/refresh). I did not get any interuptions though.
I just found out my AppleCare expired in November, so I'm trying to do anything I can myself to fix it before I have to take it into the Genius Bar...

  • Airport Express extends 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz or just one at a time?

I recently switched my dual band Time Capsule to use different names for the 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz networks.
Will the Airport Express extend both or just one at a time, if so, which one will it extend?
I have two Airport Express modules, bought a long time apart, is there any difference in functionality and how do I tell them apart if this is the case?
All are running the most recent firmware version.

Welcome to the discussion area, Mike!
Will the Airport Express extend both or just one at a time, if so, which one will it extend?
The AirPort Express is a single band device, so it can extend either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band, +but not both at the same time+. Since you have different names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz band by default. Using AirPort Utility, the setup application for the AirPorts, it is possible to configure the AirPort Express to extend either band.
If you are perhaps thinking of extending the 5 GHz band, this can be a bit tricky because 5 GHZ signals do not travel effectively over distance or penetrate obstructions as well as 2.4 GHz signals. You almost have to have a line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and the AirPort Express to be able to extend the 5 GHz band.
I have two Airport Express modules, bought a long time apart, is there any difference in functionality and how do I tell them apart if this is the case?
Look on the side of the AirPort Express for the model number in the small print. You'll need Model No A 1264 to be able to "extend". If you have the older Model No A 1084, that version will not be able to "extend" a wireless network, but you could use it to "join" the wireless network and stream AirTunes to the device.
All are running the most recent firmware version.
That would be 7.5.2. If you have the older version of the AirPort Express, the latest firmware version for that device would be 6.3.

  • Wireless modem and Airport Express.. one at a time

Recently my internet provider upgraded my old plug in modem to a newer wireless model. Now it seems that the current setting allow communication with only one or the other at the same time. If I want to be online with the wireless modem and send my iTunes music via Airport Express to my sound system, no dice. I have to either click on the modem up in the Airport choices to be online and listen to iTunes through the computer speakers, or go offline to listen to music through the sound system and Airport Express.
I'm sure I'm just missing something in preferences or settings somewhere.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

    No ideas?
