Old: iChat and MSN

Hello guys!
Well, this is an old one, but it may be good for us MSN users around the world. With Lion, Apple says that:
"Service plug-ins
Service plug-ins from third-party developers let you add new chat services to iChat. And plug-ins run in a separate process to help ensure that they won’t damage your system."
So my question is, are there any of these plugins already developed (that's what the developer previews are for, right?) and ready to use in Lion? I've searched with no success, and I'd really love to use iChat with MSN (please don't suggest alternatives such as Addium and stuff, I hate those).

Hi,
Growl is installed in Leopard and Show Leopard if you Install Chax ( an iChat Add On that does allow an All Contacts list (up to you to create Service based "Groups)
However the current version of Chax does not work in Lion.
Growl can be obtained other ways and they may have already written a Lion Version (Intel Only)
It has taken from iChat 3 when Jabber (And therefore Google) was Added until Lion and iChat 6 to get Yahoo.
We may be waiting until iChat 9

IChat between MSN, Yahoo, and .mac

Hi, I just got my macbook, and I would like to know how do I add friends from MSN or Yahoo messager in my iChat, I would like to know if it is possible.

Ethernet Connected Good, But iChat And MSN Messenger Won't Get Connected !

Hi,
I'm now connecting through a Local Area Network Via Ethernet Cable, The Connection is good, and Safari had no problem to get into the internet, but the iChat and MSN Messenger won't get connected !
I use 2 account in iChat Which they are Mobile Me Account And GMail Account.
also I tried adium it still won't get connected.
this is an hotel network.

thanks for replying me, yes i did authenticate my MacBook in hotel's network.
everything is fine, iTunes store work correctly, Safari work correctly, except for the IM apps aren't working.
when i switch to Windows VISTA everything work fine include Live Messenger, Skype....etc.

Ichat vs msn messenger

i am chatting to people on msn, with my ichat program. however they cannot see my picture, even though it is set to display a certain picture. as well when i send certain emoticons, they show up different to the person using msn. how do i set my picture for viewing with people using msn?

I used Psi as it was mentioned somewhere like the http://www.jabber.org.au/ichat or http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/ links. It seemed sensible to be able to follow the instructions closely.
After I had opened an account with the server that I chose from this list I selected the transports I wanted to use and Autorised them.
Then I just entered the account name into the iChat Preferences > Accounts.
From there I added MSN and Jabber Buddies and when I contacted them it said waiting for Authorisation and when they did that I had Buddy icons.
It seems to be automatic or at least with iChat over Jabber buddies.
Gil Taylor from this list is much more up on this sort of thing. IT may pay to to contact him for more info. Also try SillyDog as he has used this more than I.

IChat and msn

Is apple ever going to come out with a version of iChat(and mail) that is compatible with hotmail and msn messenger?

I am not a product manager in Apple nor in MS, so I can't tell them which protocols to implement nevertheless they wont listen to me (alone). Honestly I don't even mind whether they should implement it in iChat or in another software, but the fact are that:
1) Most web camera's (90% or 99%) are not supporting Mac.
2) Skype has video support for windows but not for Mac.
3) MSN on Mac has no video support.
4) And even Apple, don't take care of us by giving us something that does work cross platform.
So at the end of the day whether this is XMPP/Jabber or any other protocol, Mac users are getting nothing useful to use for proper video chats.
BTW according to latest market researches MSN is leading with over 60% worldwide market share, 70-90% in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and neck to neck with AOL in the US.

world use Windows.
It's probably closer to 90% (~3% Mac, ~5% Linux,
leaving about 2% other).
Why not give the 0.00001% of us
loyal to Mac a proper way to connect to our
families
and friends, who use MSN for video chats???
I suspect it's because Apple is a US company. In the
US AIM rules, in Europe it's MSN. In Asia i've heard
that ICQ is still popular (but ICQ and AIM use the
same protocol now anyway).
Frankly i don't want Apple to add MSN capabilities to
iChat, and i'd rather they depreciate the AIM
capabilities in favour of more work on XMPP/Jabber.
If you want interconnectivity i suggest you email
Microsoft (,AOL and Yahoo) and ask them why they
aren't supporting the IETF standard for IM, which is
XMPP.

IChat to MSN

I have a hotmail account but iChat doesn't support it. Is there a way to setup a hotmail account in iChat?If not is there a way to talk to msn users through ichat with a mac.com, jabber or aim account? Please help because none of my friends have anything but msn.

The All forces thing requires that you have an Jabber account at a Jabber server that runs the required Transport.
Check the three links in this page to see the third link to a List of Jabber Servers and the Services they run. Greyed out ones are only available if you have an Account with that Server. Coloured ones are available from other Jabber servers such as the GoogleTalk one.

Switching from Windows - iChat and MSN?

I've been a windows user for over 10 years but I'm considering the switch over to apple.
I'm researching a few things and hoped you could help with a quick question.
I use MSN/Windows messenger to chat to all my friends and wondered if this would still be possible to do with the iChat on the mac.

We have been mac users for years, but all of our family are PC users.
We have the IChat AV 3 and of course they use a pc version of the camera.
Would your recent suggestion for a "messenger" be the best solution for us to communicate with them?

Ichat with msn account

I have heard that ichat can be used with my msn account. Is this true? And if it is, what do I have to make it work.

At the moment no. If yu want to use the isight with msn use amsn.sourceforge.net
Bear in mind though that amsn doesn't support audio. For a full featured isight usage without going through ichat you need the skype video preview (http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/videopreview.html). But it's not msn!

MSN/hotmail and ichat videoconferencing

i'm new - forgive, i ahve read lots of the threads here and understand that i can set up msn messenger through the ichat, but this will still only allow me im exchange and not proper videoconferencing? have i understood correctly? is it true that the only way i can use videoconferencing with ichat is via aim or mac? and if so, when will ichat and msn be workable together for videoconferencing?

No, MSN does not work through iChat. However, there are ways to use "substitute" MSN clients (aMSN, I believe, is one) to chat with Windows MSN users. I don't think this allows video, however; I could be wrong.

iChat is only compatible with AIM 5.9 for Windows, or with Trillian (though the paid Pro version is necessary for video).

That's a question for MS, rather than for Apple. :S It is my understanding that MS did not agree to make cross-platform videoconferencing possible, while AOL did. Sorry.

MSN Messenger on iChat

Hello all.
Just got my first Mac and I'm still a little lost.
On windows I always used MSN Messenger. All my friends use it.
I already downloaded it for Mac, but it is very limited in comparison. The biggest problem is that it does not support video.
I was wondering if there's a way to talk to MSN Messenger users using iChat.
If it isn't possible, maybe there's another software that will do it.

Hotmail/MSN Account on iChat??

I've been using Adium for my hotmail/msn email account because I didn't like the program Microsoft supplied (Microsoft Messenger), but then I switched to aMSN because that let you have a personal message and view other people's personal message. So I like Adium and wish that it had MSN personal message support, and I dont like aMSN's grapical design.

Can I get my MSN Messenger on iChat?

Hi,
I am a new switcher to Mac and I love it.
I was wondering if there was anyway I could add my MSN Messenger account to iChat as all my friends use that service. I don't know anyone who uses iChat!
